Out with Consequences: A Journey out of Jehovah's Witnesses

Rate this book

In her memoir Out with Consequences, Debbie L. McDaniel, a disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witness, details a childhood of sexual abuse suffered at the hands of an elder whom the church refuses to punish.

As a child McDaniel learned how deep cultures of shame, denial, and hypocrisy can be when she is made to suffer a years-long cycle of sexual abuse at the hands of a church elder. When simultaneously speaking out and admitting her homosexuality gets her disfellowshipped, McDaniel is shunned by not only the congregation, but also her family—all while her abuser remains in good standing with the church.

The church warns her and other victims to keep quiet. And going to the authorities does little to help; although her abuser is arrested for his crimes, he is just as quickly released. Despite it all, she survives the fallout to tell her story.

In a time when churches' stances on sexual abuse and homosexuality are constantly making headlines, Out with Consequences offers a must-read perspective. Written with the strength of voice of someone who has seen it all, McDaniel's story is sure to teach other survivors that if she can survive, they can too.

(Much of what I say below is picking up on the flaws that Debbie’s story demonstrates with the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses. I felt that it was important to clearly bring these issues to the fore since Debbie’s story shows the consequences that they have on the victims. As for my thoughts specifically on the book, I think that this is a very poignant, very necessary, outpouring of personal experiences of growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness. Debbie is clearly not a writer by trade, but I think that that makes her story all the more meaningful. Regular people sharing their horror stories. Not remaining silent. Rebelling against the shame that they were made to feel. Shining a light on their abusers and on the organization that has actively protected them. You can tell that she has been writing this story in her own mind for a very long time, making a clear and compelling narrative of her journey. I do think that it may be difficult for readers who aren’t very familiar with Jehovah’s Witnesses to understand some of the lingo that she uses, but this did not weaken her story in the least. I will warn you that she does graphically describe the abuse she experienced, so I would be cautious if that is a trigger for you. Still, I would encourage anyone to support Debbie’s efforts to shine a light on the evils of this organization by picking up a copy of her book.)

As none of you will know, I was once a Jehovah’s Witness. As some of you will know, this is a cult group. "But," you say, "I know some witnesses and they’re super nice people." I do not contest the fact that many individual believers are incredibly kind. However, this does not change the fact that the group itself prohibits life saving blood transfusions, discourages members from seeking psychiatric help, frowns upon higher education, and encourages members to shun those who either decide that they simply don’t believe anymore or who have unrepentantly committed a grave "sin" (even if that person is a close member of your family). It goes beyond belief that these aren’t even the worst of the organization’s practices. Many people don’t know that it also has had a history of maintaining practices that allow child abuse to flourish within it. This is what Debbie’s story uncovers. The raw, unbearable pain of growing up in "God’s one true organization" and being sexually abused by one of the men appointed to "protect and shepherd the flock." What’s more, her story puts on clear display all the flawed policies that the organization has refused to change though they have been made aware that they have permitted child abuse to become a rampant problem. They do not encourage families to go to the police when it comes to the attention of the men in charge nor do they report the crime themselves. They do not accept the accusation of a single victim as being valid because they require at least two witnesses in order to be considered legitimate. If a single child were to go to the Elders (the men in charge at a single congregation) they would not be believed and the accused would have no action made against them. Even if there are enough witnesses for the accusation to be considered legitimate, they have the disgusting practice of making the victims accuse their abuser to their face and the abuser is allowed to respond to the claims of the child. They consider the abuse of a child to be first and foremost a sin rather than a crime. In general, they discourage believers from taking legal action against each other which extends to cases such as these. Even if an abuser is disfellowshipped, they are not barred from continuing to attend meetings even if the other members are not supposed to talk to them. What’s more, if they prove to be "repentant" they can again rejoin the congregation and continue in the door to door work as a threat to the public as well as the congregation. The Elders are told to keep this individual away from children at this stage, but the congregation as a whole is not notified. This is the same when a pedophile moves to a new congregation. And on top of all of this, in the wake of an increasing amount of court cases against the organization, the organization still refuses to change its policies and even refuses to hand over the list of thousands of names of pedophiles that it has kept track of over the years. A great resource for learning more about this organization and the great harm that it has done is the John Cedars YouTube channel. This is an issue that needs to be raised to the attention of the general public.

I read this book along with Tami Dickerson's book years ago. Both books are really short as if they expected their audience to have a short attention span. I bought at least 3 copies of each book and gave them away as free gifts.

I'm unhappy that Debbie was "disfellowshipped" more than once and also that she received hate mail from Jehovah's Witnesses after she got "disfellowshipped". They weren't supposed to communicate with her after she got "disfellowshipped".

She was a sex crime victim by a wicked wolf in sheep's costume who served as an elder in her congregation. The judicial committee of 3 male elders told her that they couldn't accept her testimony alone and that she needed another witness to verify her serious claim against this old wicked man. The Bible says white hair is a crown of beauty but only when it is accompanied with righteousness.

I used to have long black hair. Sometimes I would style it in a hair bun or pony tail but strangely enough not a horse tail, ass tail, zebra tail, donkey tail, mule tail, or whatever. I have never bought a hair wig which is not the same as an ear wig. As far as I know, the only definition of ear wig is an insect that for some strange reason enjoys crawling inside human ears and maybe other types of ears. What is the difference between human hair toupe [toupee] dog hair toupee, cat hair toupe, polyester hair toupe, nylon hair toupee, acrylic hair toupe, male hair toupe, female hair toupee, boy hair toupe, pubic hair toupee, hair insertions, hair implants, hair extensions, hair braids, magic toupe, hallucin[ogenic] or hallucionary or whatever toupee such as illusion[ary] toupe or whatever or just say any type of devious, deceptive, or false hair untruth because somebody just reminded me that the word 'lie' and 'lye' can mean lying down as in laying down as upon a dirt floor, dirty vinyl floor, carpet, mattress, tile, marble tile, mattress, futon, metal bed frame, sofa sleeper couch, back seat bench of a minivan, and whatever.

Wolves, goats, disobedient sheep, and obedient sheep can be any gender, age, and color combination. What about cats, dogs, house flies (the English word 'flies' means more than one fly), cockroaches (roach is an abbreviation or nickname or shorthand for the singular English word 'cockroach'), cobwebs, rocks, chapstick, lip gloss and so forth.

The whole congregation must be involved with reprovings and disfellowshipping decisions. All reproofs must be public not private. The word "excommunication" doesn't exist for Jehovah's Witnesses but it does exist for English speaking Roman Catholics and LDS Mormon Catholics. The word "excommunication" is the equivalent or synonym for the Jehovah's Witness vocabulary word "disfellowshipped" or whatever. The LDS Mormon Catholic vocabulary word "disfellowshipped " is the synonym for the Jehovah's Witness Bible word "reprove" "or "rebuke" or "mark" or whatever.

The abbreviation or acronym LDS means Latter Day Saint. Saint means 'holy one'. Some LDS Mormons prefer the (KJ or KJV) King James Version of the Bible also known as (aka) The Authorized Version (AV) by King James of Great Britain or The United Kingdom or whatever over any Book of Mormon. There are many different editions or versions of The Book of Mormon. There is a squeaky clean version and other versions or editions that get more and more evil the higher up a member gets promoted into the sex cult devotee of not only Mormon but also Moroni and let us not forget about Moronite and Molina and Mammon (Money lover) and whatever.

I don't consider the author a true lesbian according to Satan's dictionary definition but I do consider her a lesbian according to Jehovah's dictionary definition because he says that a real lesbian cares for all females with genuine neighborly love without any Eros or Romantic incest rape energy. She has a daughter by her "ex-husband". Towards the end of the book she explained how she met her "spouse/wife", woman.

This book is too concise for me because she gives a brief explanation that she met her husband during her first disfellowshipping and that he was a Roman Catholic at the time. She witnessed to him and he became one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I don't know if he got water baptized before her first "reinstatement" or not.

She swore up and down that she heard the second judicial committee tell her, "We've decided to disfellowship you a second time." After her first "divorce" she decided to "marry" her female hair stylist, Crystal, which I'm sure is a pseudonym or made up stage name. Even if their "marriage" was allowed by the United States of America does not mean that the God of the Bible approved of it. It was never a valid marriage in his eyes. I heard about a sailor or Captain named Pepper Hamilton. He married many women but only his first wife was his real wife. All his other women sincerely believed they were his only wife with pure honesty of heart but Pepper knew better. Belief is not always the same thing as knowledge. Knowledge isn't always the same thing as wisdom since wisdom means obedience to God's law. Jesus Christ said that in the beginning God created Adam and Eve. That isn't the only reason the Pharisees hated him.

Satan was willing to marry me with a fake wedding certificate. He planned to pimp me out like a prostitute. The same thing happened to Sheila Brumet. Thankfully she realized that Jesus Christ never recognized her pimp as a real husband and she joyfully returned to the home of her parents.

Debbie, the author, had a severe court child custody battle with the father of her only child. The book I read doesn't explain why her daughter in the beginning agreed with her father that all homosexuality is a sin according to Romans chapter One and also First Corinthians chapter Six. Perhaps later her daughter thought, "I hate my dad's super strictness with me and he often provokes me to wrath and furthermore he often exasperates me, aggravates me, irritates me, gets on my nerves, and often he goes out of his way to morally outrage me by his love with hypocrisy and even though dad is older than me I really can quote the Bible just as well as dad can!!! The Bible clearly says that homosexuality is not the unforgivable sin but that lying about it can be! Furthermore, mom has been honest about the whole thing!"

The unforgivable sin is wiped away as a clean blank slate as Romans 6:23 states. That's why those who commit the unforgivable sin hate being resurrected in the smelting pot aka (also known as) the lake of fire, sulfur, and brimstone side (the largest lake is smaller than the smallest ocean in the entire universe) or the fires of Gehenna (not all fire is the same color); that means it is a closed universe inside a closed unisphere since spheres can exist inside spheres and so forth just like a certain Russian doll that has a smaller doll inside a smaller doll and so forth since Zechariah wrote that all creation is half a bowl of water in God's right hand which includes all finite immortals and in chapter 14 he describes multiple pots and multiple bowls. Is Yehovah talking about earthly Jerusalem or heavenly New Jerusalem or both? Your guess is as good as mine. Matthew 23:37, 38, 39.

There were a number of Bible scriptures that popped into my head as I was reading this book and I'll provide the citations at the end of this review.

For now, I just want to remind people that pedophiles and all types of predators exist in all belief systems and it's wrong to behave as if it's impossible for an elder or regular pioneer to be a wicked one and imposter, a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Sex predators existed in ancient Israel. The Hebrew Bible said that the rape victim is the same as a murder victim.

Pedophiles and predators are worse nowadays. They exist among Jehovah's Witnesses, Roman Catholics, Protestants such as Lutherans, LDS Mormons, Israeli Jews, Muslim (Islamic people), Buddhists, Hindus, agnostics, atheists, and so forth.

Hey, I'm even sure there are a few pedophile and predator vegans and activists here and there. No group is sacrosanct.

Jesus Christ said it's inevitable that causes for stumbling would arrive. Nevertheless, woe to those causes.

His words about Sodom prove that homosexuality is not the unforgivable sin but lying about it can be.

I read about a 9 year old girl who was guilty of sexually molesting children younger than her. It is also possible that a legally minor child can be stronger than their legal adult victim. Moses spoke words about the young girls of Moab that indicate young girls could be guilty of wickedness also. It depends on which English Bible you look at.

In the USA a minor child is under 18 years old but in South Korea a minor child is under 24 or 25 years old.

I believe that a one day old newborn baby can be more violent, dangerous, and powerful than the Nephilim were. However, the holy spirit is greater than all creation. If you have faith the size of a mustard seed then you can move mountains, any type of mountain symbolic or whatever.

The tribe of Benjamin was almost wiped out because of the sex crime committed against a Levite's concubine. Even though the men of Gibeah were sons of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as well as having the law as written down by Moses they were guilty of gang raping a fellow Israelite woman. These men knew the name of Jehovah but didn't obey him.

The Levite loved himself more than he loved her. He was very forgiving of her adultery against him. He didn't demand that she be stoned to death. He spoke consolingly to her so that she agreed to return to his house from her father's home. Her dad also was very understanding about her adultery and refused to get her stoned to death for adultery against his son-in-law. After the Benjamite men of Gibeah got done abusing her all night long she crawled to the front door. She knew he would take care of her and do his best to heal her wounds. As it turns out she died before he opened the door in the morning. The other tribes agreed that the men of Gibeah should face punishment.

(I was "reinstated" for the third time November 4, 2022. I heard about one brother who had been "disfellowshipped" five times. Somebody told me that the world record for false disfellowshippings is seven times.)

Daniel 11:35 - And some of those having insight will be made to stumble, in order to do a refining work because of them and to do a cleansing and a whitening until the time of the end; because it is yet for the time appointed.

Matthew 18:6, 7 - But whoever stumbles (causes to sin) one of these little ones who have faith in me, it would be better for them to have hung around their neck a millstone that is turned by a she-ass and to be sunk in the open sea. Woe to the world because of the stumbling blocks! Of course, it is inevitable that stumbling blocks will arrive, but woe to the ones through whom the stumbling blocks come!

2 Timothy 3:13 - Wicked ones and impostors will advance from bad to worse, misleading and being misled by each other.

Matthew 7:15 - Be on the watch for the false prophets who come to you in sheep’s covering, but inside they are ravenous wolves.

Acts 20:29 - I know that after my going away oppressive wolves will enter in among YOU and will not treat the flock with tenderness

Genesis 8:21 - And Jehovah began to smell a pleasing aroma. So Jehovah said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground on man’s account, for the inclination of the heart of humans is bad from their youth up; and never again will I strike down every living thing as I have done.

Genesis 19:4, 5 - Before they could lie down, the men of the city, the men of Sodʹom, surrounded the house, from boy to old man, all the people in one mob. And they kept calling out to Lot and saying to him: “Where are the gods who came in to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intercourse with them.”

If some boys were bad enough back then in Bible times what about modern day children like the nine year old girl that sexually molested a four year old girl back in 1985?! It is now 2023. I can imagine that the situation is worse now.

(Psalm 58:3) The wicked ones have been perverts from the womb; They have wandered about from the belly onward; They are speaking lies from moment of birth.

Jesus said: “Look! days are arriving in which people will say, ‘Happy are the barren (infertile) women, and the wombs that did not give birth and the breasts that did not nurse!’”—Luke 23:29

(Matthew 10:15) Truly I say to you, it will be more endurable for the land of Sodʹom and Go·morʹrah on Judgment Day than for that city.

(Matthew 11:23) And you, Ca·perʹna·um, will you perhaps be exalted to heaven? Down to Hades you will drop down; because if the powerful works that took place in you had taken place in Sodʹom, it would have remained on earth until this very day.

(Matthew 11:24) But I say to you, it will be more endurable for the land of So'dom on Judgment Day than for you.

1 Corinthians 10 talks about the table of demons and the table of Jehovah. It's not just modern food ingredients that are part of the table of demons. It is also animals that are unhappy because of rape, bestiality, or some other reason.

I read about a female duck that was gang raped by a bunch of male ducks. These males were possessed by Satan and his angels (angel means 'messenger'). Some people are guilty of raping animals. It's called "bestiality" in English. These animals may or may not be wild or pasture raised. All animals are clean. Remember Peter's trance vision of the rectangular linen sheet full of creepy and crawly four footed things and that he had six other Jewish anointed Christian males with him who witnessed and heard with their own eyes and ears that the holy spirit and the gift of speaking in tongues was poured out on many pure Gentiles (people of the nations who were not direct descendants of Abraham at all and completely different skin colors but who had a genuine love of strangers which is another way of saying that they enjoyed getting to meet and greet and make new friends which is the opposite of me. I am not a true social butterfly at all. Cornelius and his close relatives and friends loved to learn about different cultures and whatever and they are all of them perfect compared to me.

Any animal that is raped becomes a beast. It is called bestiality or beastility. All beasts must be destroyed.

Revelations said that certain angels shouldn't destroy the vegetation of the earth until a certain event happens. Jesus cursed at least two fig trees. Why? Because they both lied to him. Both Hananim and the Christ or the Messiah hate Monsanto and other businesses that imitate them.

Revelation 7:2, 3 - And I saw another angel ascending from the sunrise, having a seal of the living God; and he called with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying: “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until after we have sealed the slaves of our God in their foreheads.

Revelation 9:4 - They were told not to harm the vegetation of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

The book I read contained strong raw language. Return Service Requested and/or Required.

This is a story about leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs). It is a story of personal betrayal, rather than doctrinal realisation, as the author gives a raw account of what she felt and experienced, rather than an analysis of doctrine or biblical interpretations.

At the heart of the story are two practices which she particularly takes issue with.

Firstly there is an ineffective way of dealing with child abuse. The JWs require two witnesses to substantiate an allegation (as per their interpretation of the bible). Child abuse is generally secretive, so there are rarely witnesses. Thus, we hear that the author’s abuser also abused another child, Cissy. Cissy came forward and reported it, but she was ignored as she did not have a second witness (41%).

When the author saw the abuser picking up other young children in his car she told the children’s mother. She was then reprimanded by the JWs for sharing confidential information about the abuser’s status as an abuser (49%).

Secondly, the practice of shunning is highlighted in the book. Once again it is based on biblical passages which seem to say that a religious community can, and should, completely shun someone who fails (in significant ways) to be in good standing with that community. Mainstream Christianity does not interpret the relevant biblical passages in that way, but the JWs do, and it produces a very painful set of consequences for individuals when they fall out with their church. Families and friends will suddenly cut off all relationships with them, and completely ignore them for the rest of their lives. The JWs view shunning as a loving way of trying to bring rebels to their senses. Others see it as a form of vindictive torture. The author states that ‘shunning is a filthy way to teach someone a lesson’ (92%).

The book describes the pain of experiencing shunning and she makes it clear that the threat and consequences of shunning operate as a form of psychological manipulation, which forced her to keep re-engaging with her community despite its protection of her abuser.

We also hear the story of the son of the abuser (Tommy) who is shunned and then commits suicide (22%). It is implied that Tommy was also a victim of abuse. In fairness Tommy seems to have also had a range of relationship problems, so it is not clear to what extent shunning caused his suicide. But the timing of it suggests that it may well have been a contributory factor.

The book ends with the author’s reflection on Voltaire’s claim that: 'those who make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.’ The story ends in a very sad place. There is no hope for the author of reconciliation with her family, as the JWs insist that their actions are biblically warranted. And there is an implied little hope for the ongoing protection of children within JW communities, as long as the JWs continue to insist on their religious right to interpret biblical passages in ways which mean that they can ignore an allegation of child abuse.

Overall, this is a short and relatively fast paced story which will take just a couple of hours to read. The sexual abuse is described in a sensitive way, so its content is accessible to readers of any age. However, some readers may be concerned that the author writes in an ‘authenticity style’ which also includes swearing. More significantly, readers should be aware that while the story is one that deserves to be told, it is also one that may lead to feelings of anger and upset at some of the details of what transpired.

I used to own three copies of this book and they were each less than 150 pages. I wonder if her original draft was profanity free and 333 pages long.

I deduct one star because all three of my copies contained obscenities. I deduct another star because I thought my copies were too concise. I wanted to know more like how her ex-husband was Roman Catholic and became one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Why and how their only child ended up with the author and her wife after the divorce custody battle

If I'm ever removed I intend to buy a fourth edition of this book.

Deeply personal, brave and meaningful

Such an important book… the more transparency that exists, the harder it is for organizations/people to hide the atrocities. Speaking your truth is so difficult, but for the brave few that manage to do it, the least we can do is listen, empathize and try to support them in their courage.
I’m so proud to call you a friend. Please know that anything I can do to support/encourage/cheer you on, I’m here for it! Sincerely, S.Sneed

I bought 3 or 4 copies of this book. It contains very strong language but is also very short like Tami Dickerson's book. The copies I received were shorter than 150 pages long each. I don't remember which edition I used to own. Maybe I owned both or all three editions. I gave some away as gifts.

Rated R due to strong raw language. Wicked ones and imposters, misleading and being misled by one another... Wolves in sheep's clothing... Rising up from amongst you yourselves... It is unavoidable that causes for stumbling should come, nevertheless, woe to those through whom they come... Daniel prophesied that in the last days some would be stumbled and that because of people like us that a cleansing and refining would take place. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11... That is what some of you were, Romans 1. A spirit claimed I was given a corrupted version of her book and that her original book does not contain any strong raw language at all. Wolves can be either gender, young or old.
