Things are not all they seem down on Deadfall Lane. Anger causes a man to commit a heinous deed; the sycamore tree is dying. But an evil is coming that could be the start of something much worse.

Deadfall Lane, by K.G. Arndell, is a short sharp read that is easily devoured in one sitting. Its pace is perfect with a writing style that will drag you in from the first sentence and hold you tight until its conclusion. It tells of Pete Denning, and what he’ll do to keep his son.

This story has a mysterious beginning, a gory middle, and an end that hints at a sinister future. What Deadfall Lane lacks in pure terror, it makes up for with a creepy sense of foreboding. If your preference is a short and tragic, yet menacing read, then Deadfall Lane pushes all the right buttons.

In a rage, Pete Denning commits an unspeakable act while in a desperate attempt to keep that which he loves --his son. But eliminating his problem doesn't solve anything. It only breeds and nurtures his worst nightmare.

I've read Deadfall Lane twice and yes, it is that good. It is a very short story that took me only about twenty minutes to read.

Israel Finn weaves a chilling and gripping tale that left me thinking about it long after I finished reading it. This story has it all: love, hate, rejection, betrayal, murder and a deep, heavy creep factor to hold it all together.

Finn is an excellent author and I've read a few of his other stories, such as No Such Thing as Monsters and Stones. All are beautifully written and I recommend any one of Finn's stories. If you have a few spare moments and want to fill them with something great to read, grab one.

Description:
Pete is pushed over the edge and commits a heinous crime with unforeseen consequences for him and his family. A hundred year old tree is now dying, leaning, and pointing accusing branches at his haunted soul.

In Short:
A dark, chilling, gruesome, and tragic short story. If you love gory horror, don't mind adult content, and are looking for a really quick read check this book out.

Pros:
This book is really well written, edited, and descriptive yet concise. The story is definitely easy to imagine and a very haunting tale. It is complicated and made me feel conflicting emotions. The story is very creepy and even though Pete, the star of the book has committed some awful sins I feared for his safety and sanity while portents of revenge began to cast a dark shadow in his direction. I was on the edge of my seat enjoying the thrilling suspense and was sad to see it end. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and would definitely read more books by Israel Finn.

Cons:
At about 10 pages this story was just too short. Although the ending was chilling it came too quickly after the climax and as a result left me feeling like I wasn't getting to know what happens next. The main character gets left in limbo. I would have liked to see him either meet his fate or escape the darkness in the end. I know part of the fear is in the not knowing. However, with how short and quick the conclusion was, that didn't work for me. There was also some adult content that I feel limited the audience pool. There was an imagined-rape scene that didn't add anything to the story but makes it a no-go and potential trigger for some readers.

Parent's Guide and Trigger Warnings:
This book contains themes of violence, gore, murder and rape.

Have you ever been in a relationship where you knew down deep in your gut the other person was cheating? You ignore it because you don’t want to believe it as the knowledge festers creating a rigid ball of harsh emotions digging into your insides. Then one night the ugliness of what the person has done spills from their lips and it’s the damnedest thing for you’re expecting a touch of remorse for their betray but get done.
This is what happens to Pete when his wife, Deb, tells his she’s leaving him to be with Greg Noffsinger and taking their son, Chris, with her. In this type of situation, a person has seconds to react—Pete’s reactions were of anger as he grabs a shovel. Needless to say, he kills his wife and buries her by a huge tree in their back yard. What he wasn’t counting on was what happened afterward.
Great short story, well written. A realistic dramatically, gripping story of a man who faces the possibility of losing what’s most important in his life. Within a heartbeat, his decision turns his life into a nightmare.

What would you do? Pete Denning does what I suppose a lot of people would like to, but maybe using the sycamore tree in the back yard to hide his crime wasn't such a good idea. I like this author and the short stories are interesting and hauntingly hard to stop thinking about.
