Just before writer and actor Darren Hynes left home for the first time, his father chopped off the tip of his big toe with a lawnmower. The confusion Hynes felt when he came home to find the house empty and the lawnmower running was nothing compared to what he would struggle with for the next year.
Hynes had been performing in plays since his early elementary days in Labrador City so, when he graduated from high school, an acting career felt like a natural fit. But since he lived in a town where mining was the leading career choice, Hynes found it difficult to talk about his dream, making it even harder to take the necessary steps to realize his ambition — until he met Mr. Ryan at a summer theatre festival.
The rest of the year was a winding road that takes Hynes from the University of Toronto to a job in a grocery store, and ultimately back to theatre school — the place where he’d been heading all along. My Own Path is the story of a young man struggling to find his way — and the difference it made when he found someone to hold the flashlight.

Darren was born in Fogo Island, Newfoundland, but grew up in Labrador City. For fifteen years Darren was a professional actor, having worked in many of the regional theatres in Canada as well as in film/television. In 2006 he was a student at The Humber School for Writers in Toronto. Creative Book Publishing (Killick Press) published his first novel, Flight, in 2010. His first Young Adult novel, Creeps, will be published this summer by Penguin Canada (Razorbill).
Presently, Darren is enrolled in the MFA Creative Writing program at The University of Guelph. He lives in Toronto and is working on his third novel.
Having just finished reading Creeps, I felt I wanted to read more from this author. This is a very personal and intimate narrative of his journey to the author he is today. He lets us into his thoughts with a passion and emotion that so many of us would be afraid to admit. I am anxiously looking forward to his next projects. I see a bright future for Darren Hynes.
