when you return to certain books, you expect to find the same book waiting for you. the cover is the same, the sentences are still where they were, the ending hasn’t changed; so why didn’t i want to put down something i couldn’t love five years ago?
i think this time the sentences lingered a little longer in other people’s voices, paused, breathed.
i thought about this several times while listening to that old arkası yarın recording in the trt archive. it felt as though time itself had seeped into the voices. there’s a stillness in the tones of müşfik kenter, nedret güvenç and metin serezli that we don’t often come across today; the words don’t hurry past, and sometimes a silence outlives the sentence itself.
then i realize that eylül belongs to a world like this. a world where what matters isn’t so much that feelings are spoken aloud, but how they’re hidden, how they’re carried, how long they can be kept inside; a world where giving voice to everything that passes through the heart hasn’t yet become a virtue.
when i picked up the book again, i came across the note i’d left five years ago:
"at least we were happy, at least we truly loved and were loved as much as one could ever wish to be loved in a lifetime.."
then i’d written,
"i suppose there’s nothing quite as terrible as hopelessness and disappointment."
i looked at the person i was then for a moment.
why had i seen only the disappointment?
maybe five years ago i was too quick to understand suat. necip too.
when we look at someone who lived in the past, i think we tend to imagine the doors of our own time standing open before them as well. it’s so easy to ask, "why didn’t she say it?", "why didn’t she leave?", "why didn’t she live differently?" as though a person’s life had always belonged to them to the same degree in every age. especially a woman’s. and it isn’t only laws or families that keep a person in place. sometimes you can’t even imagine stepping outside the world you were taught to accept.
then i found myself moving back and forth between being angry with suat and feeling sorry for her. i still am.
because isn’t it too easy to explain everything away with the period as well? at some point, the sentences we build to protect ourselves begin to take over: "this is the right thing to do.", "it was never possible anyway.", "this is what’s best for everyone."
how many times does a person have to repeat the same sentence before they finally believe it? and when does it stop being sacrifice, when does it become a small act of neglect committed against one’s own life?
i don’t know.
i think one reason i love eylül now is that not knowing the answers no longer bothers me as much as it once did.
quite the opposite.
i don’t even know whether necip and suat’s love was really as great as it seems.
what if they’d actually lived it? what if we dropped them into an ordinary tuesday; breakfast, money, illness, boredom, seeing the same habit in the same person for the hundredth time.. would they still have loved each other like this? or do some loves remain perfect partly because life never got the chance to touch them?
we’re terribly unfair to the things that never happened; we either call them failures or masterpieces. and yet who can know what an unlived life would have looked like?
then i get stuck on the title.
eylül.
neither quite summer nor winter. you can still dress lightly, but the coolness of the evening feels different. the sun is still there, but it no longer warms you. like realizing something is over while it hasn’t quite ended yet.
this is where it caught me this time. the most terrible thing that happens to suat and necip doesn’t seem to be what happens to them at the end; it happens much earlier, while they’re still talking, still sitting beside each other, while nothing has yet been completely lost, and yet they can already sense that something will never return.
that’s the interval where grief hurts most.
before the loss.
and now i’m reading again the sentence i underlined five years ago: "at least we truly loved and were loved as much as one could ever wish to be loved in a lifetime.." this time, more than "we were happy," i find myself caught on "at least."
such a small, helpless expression.
when does a person begin saying at least while counting what remains of their life?
back then, i thought this sentence was the summary of the novel. now it feels more like the final consolation a person offers themselves. if they couldn’t live the life they wanted, at least they loved. if they couldn’t stay beside the person they loved, at least they were loved. if there’s no future left in their hands, at least let them rescue a few minutes from the past.
and for some reason, i find that sadder now than i did before.
loving a book years later isn’t only about changing your mind about it. sometimes, years later, you sit down beside a sentence your former self didn’t understand and finally hear what it was trying to say.
i think i heard eylül differently this time.
in the voices of müşfik kenter, nedret güvenç and metin serezli, which felt so utterly real; in the way they paused over a sentence, listened to one another, left silence between the words.
or maybe i simply understand september differently now.
