Rules of Desire

Rate this book
He fulfils desires, though his own are forbidden.

Gene

By day, I am a psychology professor. By night, I am known at my club as the Desire Genie, fulfilling people’s deepest fantasies. The two worlds were never meant to collide, until I saw her in my lecture theatre.

The girl I never forgot. The vulnerable, terrified girl caught in the wreckage of a bad scene years ago, by an irresponsible Dom who didn't deserve her trust.

Except she has changed, grown up, and is discovering her own power. She has sought me out to help her overcome her trauma, to heal and reclaim her submission.

But it's forbidden. Impossible. A power imbalance. And the last thing I want is a scandal when I already have enough secrets. No matter how her innocent amber eyes tempt my dominant side.

But Taylor is persistent, and beneath my masks, I am just a man. But genies grant wishes; they don’t live out their own, and Taylor might be one wish too far.

This is an M/F professor/student romance set in a UK university and a BDSM kink club. Contains explicit scenes and a guaranteed HEA.

Before I even get into it - no amount of words will be enough. I just want to gush about this book over and over again. I absolutely adored it!

I am notoriously slvtty for a good BDSM short, and the Seasons of Desire series has been a favorite of mine. When I found out Gene was getting his very own book, I ran at the chance to read it!

And this. book. did. NOT. disappoint. First, I am also a HUGE psychology nerd. And even if it wasn't quite enough to get us a degree, Rules of Desire dove into the psychology of BDSM enough to have me reaching for some academic texts - seriously, I chose the wrong major. It tackled several very tough topics (TAYLOR YOU ARE PERFECT), and had me absolutely reeling on more than one occasion. It was an incredible read that I'll truly be thinking about for days to come. I'm so glad we got to see Gene get his own beautifully full story, and while I'm not sure I (or anyone?) can handle Simon's, I really can't wait for it!!

So glad to finally read Genes book and find out more about him! I enjoyed seeing all the other characters come back in to it in one way or another and I can’t wait to find out more about Simon and Elle and their story.

Taylor — Her trauma cuts deep. You feel it right alongside her. The panic. The hurt. The betrayal. The disappointment. But you also feel the damage it leaves behind. The lack of confidence. The way she constantly questions herself.

At times, her internal monologue is genuinely heartbreaking. She’s so hard on herself. Ever since Gene saved her, she’s thought about him. She wants him. She needs his help. Yet that deep-rooted fear of not being good enough lingers in the back of her mind every single day.

The trauma inflicted by her mother is still there too, like a little devil perched on her shoulder, whispering cruel things into her ear. Watching her battle those thoughts was emotional and, at times, painfully relatable.

Gene — When it comes to Taylor, he’s wound tight. He wants her with every fibre of his being. He tries to keep her at arm’s length, but let’s be honest, that doesn’t last very long.

What he does know is that he could never let anyone else have her.

He wants to help her heal from her trauma. He was there when it happened. He was the one who saved her the first time. As the story progresses, he comes to realise just how much he wants her. She isn’t just someone he desires — she’s his. More than anyone he’s ever wanted before.

Gene has never been one for long-term relationships, but with Taylor, everything changes. For the first time, he wants forever.

And when they finally come together? Absolutely scorching. 🔥

Of course, it doesn’t come without complications. An obsessive staff member, the challenges of a power imbalance, and deeply buried insecurities all collide to create some truly disastrous twists along the way.

When Taylor finds herself dancing far too close to death and Gene refuses to leave her side — staying as close as circumstances allow — something begins to heal between them. The fractures start to mend.

It’s beautiful. It’s raw. It’s emotional. It’s found family rallying together when it matters most.

And that ending? A thoroughly deserved HEA.

My Thoughts

This book left me feeling sad, gutted, and completely invested in Taylor’s inner turmoil. Her struggles felt real, and the themes explored throughout the story touch on issues many people face every day.

There were moments that encouraged a lot of self-reflection on my part, which always makes a story hit harder.

But alongside the heartbreak comes hope. Watching Taylor grow, heal, and ultimately find happiness made the journey worth every emotional moment.

This one. Hit. Hard.

I Am Obsessed With Desire Genie!

Rules of Desire is book 1 in the Desire Genie series. This can be read as a standalone book; it has its own storyline and HEA but we have met Gene before and he has always been an intriguing and sexy character so I suggest also reading the book Seasons of Desire which is a collection of short stories involving Gene, his matchmaking and some very explicit desires!

I also recommend jumping into some of CC’s other amazing series that crossover, and in my opinion makes Rules of Desire even more entertaining.

Start with;
1. Steel Vengeance- Steel Ventures book 1- this sets off an explosive introduction to many of the characters in this world.
2. Sweet Treats- I got this novella by signing up for CC’s newsletter.
3. Steel Protection- Steel Ventures book 2.
4. Steel Christmas- Steel Ventures book 3.
5. Craving Revenge- Prequel novella for the Obsessed Mafia Men series.
6. Hiding Desire- Obsessed Mafia Men book 1.
7. Seasons of Desire- A spicy collection of holiday based short stories including some characters we have met in the Steel and Mafia Men books and the resident Desire Genie!
8. Caging Innocence is book 2 in the Obsessed Mafia Men series.
9. Shattered Hope is a short novella that I also received as a CC newsletter subscriber and it should not be missed, but FYI it will have spoilers so definitely read it after Caging Innocence!
10. Then, move on to Capturing Obsession.
11. Lastly, jump right into Rules of Desire!

I have read and loved every single one of the above books. They are consuming, dark, emotional and spicy and filled with well written morally grey men and feisty strong women. I have been hooked from the start!

Rules of Desire has every bit of everything I always expect from a CC Gedling book and more because once you meet Gene you will fall and possibly get a spanking! This book has some pretty intense themes, yet written with a complex character history and immense care. Do check the content warning, CC holds nothing back. There were old characters from the books I mentioned above and new characters that I cannot wait to get to know more about. Some of them have really grabbed my attention and I cannot wait for more!

Lastly, do not miss the bonus material. There is a link at the end of the e-book for access. Yummy! Sooo good!

Oh Gene, you poor guy. You saw it coming and still got hit by a train named Taylor.

Taylor, sweetie, you have GOT to stop taking everything to heart! Awesome self advocacy until you really needed it. I love a woman who knows what she needs to heal and won’t stop until she has it, but BABES….we need to talk about some moderation!

I normally don’t really like age gap books because one party is barely an adult. That is NOT the case here. Taylor is absolutely adult enough to handle the age difference. It helps that Gene is aware of the power imbalance (way more important than the age gap) and tries to offset that. The two have met before, after a disaster of a scene almost a decade prior. Taylor has re-entered the area and is looking to heal from that night.

I was surprised that the spice level, while high, wasn’t ridiculous. The primary set is a kink club, after all. But honestly, it was very tastefully handled and well employed. The psychology was spot on, making this easily one of my favorite dark romance books to date! So often, the BDSM community is misrepresented to scare people. It was nice to see this addressed “on stage” and the differences pointed out.

Gene being so self-aware was probably the funniest part for me, though I’m not sure that was the intention. I just love to see powerful people squirm when they can see the train wreck coming and know they can’t avoid it. Some run head-long into it, others try to avoid it the best they can. But not Gene….no….Gene had to keep the same steady pace, denying the outcome as he watched it close in on him. Silly man.

Yes, there is plot outside the scenes. The story holds together well, the side characters are well designed and full people. The jealousy and internal joking comes across as authentic and real. I can easily imagine running into them on the street and having a conversation.

I definitely recommend this if you are looking for a quick read that hits all the spots: spice, romance (even if reluctant), character development as a major plot point, and the HEA we all hope for.

There are hard-to-read moments of self doubt, talk of self harm, accidental overdose, negative natural reactions, and (of course) plenty of sex acts.

I love a good BDSM club romance, and Gene and Taylor were so much fun to get to know. Both were wonderfully imperfect in the most perfect ways.

Gene, known as the “Pleasure Genie," owns a BDSM club and is a professor in the psychology department. He never thought he’d find himself teaching again after retiring years ago, but he made a commitment and was determined to honor it. On his very first day back, he spots a face from his past, a woman he never truly forgot.

Taylor walks into Gene’s class with a mission. She is determined to enlist his help in reclaiming her submission. Years prior, she survived a traumatic experience when her Dom at the time ignored her non-verbal cues to stop a scene. Gene was there that night, and he literally cut her down, saving her. Though Taylor isn't sure if he will even remember her, she is pleasantly surprised to see recognition cross his face on that first day of class.

Taylor's character is incredibly relatable, especially with her body image struggles and her desire to heal from past trauma. I loved how honest she was with herself, and how she eventually found the courage to trust someone else with her truth. It is incredibly scary to open up about your insecurities,  fearing having them validated is a risk most people wouldn't take.

Gene is so in tune with Taylor. His patience and genuine desire to see her respect and love herself had me falling for him right alongside her. His ability to be a steady pillar she needs to overcome her fears and doubts is so sweet. While these are qualities everyone looks for in a good Dom, Gene is most definitely a "unicorn" amongst Doms.

Overall, I loved the author's exploration of the forbidden student/professor trope, using the Dom/sub relationship to highlight the fine lines within their power dynamic. The portrayal of Gene and his instinct to always put Taylor’s needs first completely made me forget the forbidden element in their relationship. It was obvious from the start that he would never use the power imbalance against her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

C C Gedling’s Rules of Desire is a compelling and immersive read that balances emotional depth, relationship complexity, and drama exceptionally well. What stood out most to me was how authentically the book portrays the BDSM lifestyle. Rather than relying on stereotypes or sensationalism, Gedling presents the dynamic with nuance, respect, and realism, offering an insightful look into the trust, communication, and boundaries that form the foundation of these relationships.

The characters felt believable and well-developed, and their interactions carried genuine emotional weight. The exploration of power exchange and desire was handled thoughtfully, making the story feel both intimate and grounded.

Alongside this authenticity, the book delivers plenty of drama to keep the pages turning. The emotional tension, personal conflicts, and evolving relationships added excitement without overshadowing the core themes. The balance between relationship exploration and dramatic storytelling kept me engaged from beginning to end.

Overall, Rules of Desire is an engaging, well-written novel that offers both an honest insight into BDSM and a gripping story filled with passion and emotional intensity. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to readers looking for romance with depth, authenticity, and intrigue.

After reading Seasons of Desire a few years ago, I was FUCKING ESTATIC to FINALLY be able to dive into THE Desire Genie’s book as I was TOO KEEN on getting his happily ever after S.T.A.T!

When a past scene with an ASSHOLE ex-dominant goes wrong, Taylor finds herself going to find the Desire Genie (that she only had a BRIEF INTERACTION with EIGHT YEARS AGO mind you) and is determined and hopeful for him to offer his assistance. However, when she goes to ask him, he turns out to be her new professor, and she has to find another way to sway him into helping her. Of course, with Gene having a good heart and having his past connection with her, he offers to help and from there it’s all things KINKY! Over the course of helping Taylor, we DEFINITELY saw some SPICINESS between the two of them! I COULD NOT GET OVER HOW ADORABLE GENE WAS! HE WAS TOO CUTE!

A lot, and I mean A LOT OF SHIT happened throughout this book that at times seemed unnecessary, believing that the plot would have been fine without it. Unfortunately certain characters and situations were a miss for me, among other things, with THE standout character for me being Mr. Lizard! Overall, I am happy that Gene got his HEA, but I feel like I definitely hyped myself up too much for what it actually turned out to be.

When have I never loved a C.C. Gelding book? The answer is never. My start to her universe was Seasons of Desire so getting to see Gene and Taylor get their happily ever after was so satisfying. I can’t explain to you how much I loved this couple. They were so perfect together and I just know they are endgame especially after thinking of each other for eight years before this book. Taylor has gone through a lot in her life and deserves the world which Gene helps give to her.

I definitely suggest reading the TWs for this book because it deals with very heavy topic even outside the BDSM and sex parts like mental illness, eating disorders, and familial abuse which can be very triggering. C.C. Gelding handled it with so much care and compassion which shined a light on these topics in a very beneficial way. I cannot recommend this book enough and am so excited for Simon and Elle’s book. I have been waiting for this series for years and the time has finally come.

I had the privilege of reading this as an ARC and this is my honest review.

This is a review from an advanced copy from the author and Luna Literary Management

Wow, there is a lot to unpack from this book.
You have the forbidden romance between Gene, the professor and Taylor his student, then you have the spicy element with the BDSM and sex club and finally, you have the relationship between Dom and sub.

This book mostly focuses on Taylor and the relationship she had with her mother, tha trauma of a dom/sub scene that went horribly wrong and how that has effected her mental health. (Make sure you check the content warnings)

Taylor's seeks out Gene as she thinks he can help her move past her trauma. Due to his position as her professor he is reluctant, but eventually agrees.

I enjoyed this book, but at times it was sad to read. There are some spicy scenes between Taylor and Gene but the focus is more on the Dom/sub relationship and helping Taylor heal. There was a good dynamic between Taylor and Gene and I liked the way their relationship developed.

There are a number of side stories that build the storyline and lead on to book 2.

Rules of Desire by CC Gedling dives headfirst into the forbidden tension between control, healing, and temptation, wrapping it all inside a high-heat professor/student, age-gap romance. At the center of the novel is the MMC Gene, a psychology professor who lives a double life as the enigmatic “Desire Genie,” and the FMC Taylor a former student who is no longer the frightened girl he once knew. One of the things I felt made this novel strong was its atmosphere. The contrast between academic restraint and the indulgent, rule-bending world of the kink club gives the story a strong dual identity. Scenes inside the club are written with confidence and sensory detail, emphasizing dominance, trust, and negotiated desire. Overall, Rules of Desire is a provocative, high-heat romance that blends taboo attraction with psychological undertones about control, healing, and identity.

I received an ARC copy from Luna Literacy. Thank you so much for giving me a chance to read and voluntarily review this novel!

This is definitely a time where 1/2 or even 1/4 stars are needed!!!

There were so many facets about this book that I enjoyed and appreciated. It really was like a 4.5 maybe even 4.75.

The two things that knocked it down just that smidge for me is there are connected characters/books before this one and my FOMO felt like I was missing an inside joke. Now not to say I was confused, but I think the found family with Simon and at The Club would have resonated a tad more if I read the prequels (if you will). I also understood, but struggled with Taylor and her inner dialogue, but also how she was treated. Not something that the author did poorly it just hurts my heart to read fatphobia and kink shaming. Really read the triggers here because there were some difficult situations and my empath heart hurt.

I felt the kink was handled well and realistically for an establish Club, I enjoyed the age gap forbidden, yummy professor yes(!), Willow and Eve - badass! I loved them and oddly even liked O’Sullivan and I’m sure his story would be interesting.

I would definitely read Simon’s story to see what shenanigans he gets up to.

I always hope for a bit more club D/s dynamic since I find it super fascinating to push those boundaries.

Also super HUGE props for the pro-counselling mental health message here. I felt like Eugene kept his wits about him and used his knowledge to help Taylor.

Thank you to C.C. and the Luna Literary team for sharing this Club and couple with me in advance!

Rules of Desire is my first time reading CC Gedling, and I didn't realize that characters within this plot are from previous books/series' so I can attest that it absolutely can be read as a standalone!

Rules of Desire is a slow burn romance, bursting with emotion - seriously, there was so much more depth than I expected from a book with a BDSM focus. And I truly enjoyed this journey! Some elements are reminiscent of Masked Sins (in that he's a professor specializing in BDSM), as well as a similar vibe to His Rules to Break. - so if you loved those, you'll enjoy this one too!

Lastly, the only thing I feel important to note before reading this book is that Yes, the FMC is plus size, but this is absolutely a story of serious body issues and low self-esteem, so prepare yourself for a woman fighting to love herself.

Thank you for gifting me an advanced reader copy. Review reflective of my personal opinions

Taylor and Gene's romance really had me in my feels at times. Taylor has been through so much, and Gene is trying his best to keep his feelings in check when it comes to Taylor. Their story started years ago, but now that they are back in each other's lives, the pull is stronger than ever.

Professor x student
Dom x sub
Age gap
F0rbidden romance

Taylor has been through a lot with a previous Dom and has been trying to get back to feeling comfortable, but she never has, except with one Dom. That Dom being Gene, the one who saved her all those years ago.

Gene is strict with his rules; one of them being no kissing. And I was at the edge of my seat waiting for them to finally break down the walls and kiss!

This book dealt with a lot of heavy topics that had me feeling so sad at times for these characters. I felt that the author did a great job dealing with those, along with the k!nk aspect of the book.

This book was so good! I didn't know anything about the other books in this series and honestly Im glad I started with Gene and Taylor. If you want a book that's a good cross between BDSM and romance this is the book for you. It doesn't lean too far in one direction.

Who doesn't like a good student and Professor book and this one was great. First there is Taylor who almost broke my heart with everything she has been through. I felt so much for her and all of her trauma. She's just trying to fit in and the outside world hasn't been nice to her. Then there is Gene who is obviously looking for his purpose in life and maybe he's found that in Taylor. He rejects her so many times, and in turn Taylor becomes more bold in her attempts to be with him. Of course we can't forget to mention Mr. Lizard..that's all I'm saying you'll have to read about him.

My favorite quote: "Beautiful things deserve to be seen."

I absolutely loved Seasons of Desire, the first books in the Desire Genie series. I was thrilled to hear that Gene was getting his own book. I was not disappointed.

I got just what I needed and hoped for. All the spice a girl could ask for and a wonderful story to go along with all that heat. So much happens in this book. You have the emotion of trauma and healing, the push and pull between Gene and Taylor. Some deep and sometimes dark themes are covered. Definitely check the TW’s before reading.

This book is well written and flows smoothly making it easy to read. The characters are incredible. They are realistic and very likable. Also, some past characters return and add so much to this book!! I highly recommend this to anybody who loves forbidden age gap spicy romance.

Okay, first OH MY GOD. I LOVED IT. You see I'm not that big of a fan of proper BDSM, I'm more into primal and cnc, but holyy freaking GOD. THE AUTHOR did justice to it, and wrote it so well. The representation, the dynamic, and omg just perfect.
THE SCENES. THE SCENES. THE SCENES. I felt it in my core iykwim.
The emotional depth of the characters. Taylor's trauma...God my heart ached for her and she was so strong and I'm so proud of her. Gene...I wanted to slap him a few times but it's okay, he made by the end <3
I was intrigued the entire book, there was not a single chapter which I wanted to skip or was bored, and finished it in a day.
Now, I won't lie, there were some things that I wish were covered but then again, the book leaned more towards realism than good dreamy fantasy.
Overall, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. I'M A SMUT LOVER AND THIS AUTHOR MADE ME A FAN OF HERSELF.

Dark, dangerous and a real journey of discovery for Taylor who wants to reclaim what was taken from her.

This is a professor student relationship with a fierce difference. Gene owns a BDSM club where he is a dominant, and one night sees his psychology student, Taylor there.

Something was taken from Taylor that marked her inside and out, hence thinking she could find what she needed as a sub at the club not knowing it was owned by her professor.

These two were explosive and Gene was singular in his tastes. He knew he could give what she was needing, but he shouldn't. More of a forbidden aspect to it.

A journey is on for both these characters but together and individually. As the reader i enjoyed the darkness and the naive discovery that Taylor takes on. They are so right for each other and that made this book so hot!

Highly recommended!

What a wild ride! I have read other novels by this author and really enjoyed them. This novel took me on such a wild ride it didn't disappoint. I was excited to jump into this novel and from the first chapter this novel pulled me in and held on tight. My heart hurt for Taylor and all she had been thru in the past. I loved Taylor and Gene together. I loved that Gene knew Taylor was different and made him want Taylor to be his despite that she was his student and the imbalance of power. I loved watching them both lower their defenses and walls and open their hearts up to each other. Once I started reading I could not put this novel down. So good! I can hardly wait to see what this author has coming next. Loved it!

RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN!

'he was essentially my own personal catnip. I was a needy bomb primed to explode.' - Taylor

Oh my!! The Desire Genie strikes again and CC Gedling knows how to build a fire and stoke the flames!! This book and in particular our FMC, Taylor, had emotions and feeling flowing when I read this story. This wasn't just a BDSM / Kink novel, this was a journey of self healing, self discovery and finding balance and love with someone you trust, who is worthy and can build you up to see how amazing you are. Gene and Taylor are exactly that and this relationship builds on these through creative and descriptive writing that immerses you into this story. A beautifully written contemporary spicy romance, with everything a reader could desire.

"I could be the careful gardener who made her bloom again."

I really enjoyed this story. Gene was a caring and devoted dom. He was exactly what Taylor needed. She is struggling with her body image and learning how to love herself. HE won my heart!!

"She looked like Aphrodite, and I felt like a beggar who had come to worship at her feet."

He showed her time and time again how beautiful she was and how to trust again. Never grew frustrated with her as she dealt with so many internal battles that caused her so much anxiety and fear. Gene constantly encourages Taylor and reminds her she is not alone.

"But what if I fail?"

Follows FMC Taylor seeking help from someone she had a brief interaction with years ago, Gene our MMC who is down to help her and the help is SPICY ❤️‍🔥 🌶️
oh not to mention he also is her new professor 😉

This book do the first of a series & can be read as a standalone but I wish I’d have read the series prior to this as some of the side characters are mentioned.

Being my first book I’ve read of CC Gedings, I really enjoyed it and this will not be the last because it is written beautifully with emotional weight to it.

Made me genuinely care for the characters. 🖤

Thank you for allowing me to ARC read this one!

Gene has finally found his person.

Taylor has only met Gene once. When she was in a horrific situation, he saved her. After many years of unsuccessful attempts to find herself again, she is convinced that only Gene can help her. And she is determined to win him over.

I’ve loved Gene ever since he first appeared in a novella. He was always so confident and strong. In his own forbidden love story, I got to know a different side of him, and I was fascinated! This book is a true explosion of emotions and had me hooked from the very first moment!

Read the TWs! Highly recommended!

Rules of Desire by CC Gedling is book one in the Desire Gene Series and is scheduled to be released on June 26th. This spicy read includes tropes such as age gap, BDSM club, impact play, longing x forbidden, professor x student, and shibari. I would highly recommend adding it to your TBR.

I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own and were not influenced by the author or publisher.

Fans of CC Gedling might have encountered The Desire Genie before if they have been lucky enough to catch one of the short stories he is featured in. Now he is finally staring in his own full length novel and it is everything I could have asked for and more. We have cameos from previous shorts, we have Steel Brothers, we have Obsessed Mafia Men, and best of all we have Gene falling madly in love with his plus sized pupil. You are not required to have read any of the previous work to understand what happens in this book, it can be done totally as a stand alone. But why would you?

As soon as I started reading I struggled to stop! Ive had glimpses of Gene the sexy professor in a few of CC's book and I was so excited to finally get his story! Compared to the super smutty seasons of desire, this felt more restrained, but in a way that was totally appropriate to the lead character himself, restrained, controlled, disciplined... until taylor and out the window goes his rules and he is exactly what she needed to overcome her trauma. Now im finished I can finally get some sleep and sit patiently for the next edition! Bring on Simon the sexy Santa and his bratty sub!!!

A forbidden romance that is filled with ups and downs and has you completely intrigued from start to finish. It's a high heat romance with the age gap trope and the tension is just so good. Gene and Taylor have a lot of great chemistry and their relationship is so interesting. The push and pull of their relationship is so good and it really has you wanting to see where it goes. This was a fun read and i definitely think if you're into these vibes you could have so much fun with it!

While this book was steamy, I totally had to shake my head at Taylor. Her issues in my opinion would be better resolved with a therapist and certainly not a BDSM club. While the first therapist may not have met her needs, there are so many others out there. She could have reclaimed her life much faster in my opinion. To me, a Dom can’t fix all her issues …even though Gene was a good guy overall. I guess I really don’t understood why someone would submit to another. People need to stand on their own two feet and think for themselves. Subspace is not the answer to problems.

Such an enjoyable read. Gene is definitely professor McDreamy 🤭. The journey Gene and Taylor take together is one of healing for them both. The live they have for each other in the end just gives the warm fuzzys even if Gene is meant to be a Dom 😉.

I really loved how this story linked into CC's other books with the return of some of my favorite grumpy, happy bad boys and one delicious mobster boss man 😉.

Can't wait for the next book
