I LOVED THIS BOOK.
I knew going in that it was a sapphic second chance romance but with necromancy, so I was immediately sold by the premise alone, but then the book was SO FUN.
Mourning Star’s writing is genuinely hilarious, and had me cackling like a deranged witch. Their characters are incredible. I want to wrap Xandria in lots of blankets and convince her to have a really long nap, and I want to do the same for Artemis.
Also I love how all of the women in this story are gay as hell, and also violent. They’re all my favourites.
There were so many cool plot twists and I was unravelling them literally seconds before they were revealed, and I loved them all. I had so much fun trying to figure out what was going on ahead of time.
I wanted a fun sapphic book about necromancy, and this book exceeded my already high expectations.

What begins in a wizards tower between a necromancer and her fae captive becomes a quest to discover the rot at the heart of the continent.
Putting the characters at the forefront of the story makes the world come alive as they do what must be done to ensure they can live sapphically.
Every time the stakes rose, another piece of character rose with it.
Masterfully paced and written to be accessible despite the breadth and scope of the events described.
I am SO PUMPED for the next book in the series!

I loved this book so very much! It had such a cool world, a creative magic system, a plot that never lets up (in the best way possible), and a surplus of badass female characters, all of whom I fell in love with almost instantly. I am obsessed with the macabre necromancy tones of the novel, and that was largely due to Mourning Star's descriptions. Their writing of the more gory parts and how that played out in fight sequences was so incredibly cool. Their writing was also utterly hilarious, at times heartbreaking, and so very swoon-worthy. Xandria and Artemis' love story was one for the ages and had me so invested, as I rooted for them and their happily ever after. I loved how soft they were around each other, how loyal they were to their found family of rebels, and how unhinged they could be when anyone in that family was threatened. Something else that was so gripping about this novel was the way it played with time and space. There is a rich history that the characters must discover in order to stop the plague, and the involvement of Gods and Demigods introduced an otherworldly element that elevated the magic system in place, and was so cool to explore throughout the book. Mourning Star has written a brilliant novel that I recommend to all, and I absolutely can't wait to read the next one in the series whenever it comes out!

WOW! Okay, so this was fantastic. a bit longer than my usual reads, but i’m glad i saw this through to the end! xan and artemis are so adorable and their dynamic had me giggling and kicking my feet the whole time.
sometimes POV shifts can throw me out of the story, but i felt like the characters and their individual voices were unique enough to tell apart with ease.
while some parts felt a bit confusing and at times a little hard to follow, it does make sense within the story. even when i was confused, i was still captivated. especially as a mood reader who loves fantasy, but struggles with high fantasy world building, this was great and definitely left me excited for book 2!!!!!

Praise is needed for Necromantic! Such a fresh and sapphic take on love, obsession, and devotion! Think Frankenstein but switch him out for the beautiful version of the female love in your life and instead of a mad scientist you have the ability to perform necromancy. There is some spice and that is always nice but this book had me laughing at some of the jabs of humor between the characters. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I jumped into this book and I am so glad that I did! I look forward to adding this author to my auto buy list because I really loved the uniqueness of their writing and I’m always on the hunt for something different! 5 stars all around for this one!

Mourning Star made me enjoy reading first person again, and I'm really glad for it. I absolutely loved how the characters thoughts were written and I must admit, Xandria's voice spoke close to home.
I can't recommend enough. The romance is really enjoyable and the fighting scenes were good too.
I can't say much without telling any spoilers, but over all, I can't wait for necromantic 2 or the other books from Mourning Star.
Oh, and the angst destroyed me a bit, but that's because Xandria's thoughts ressonated with me a little too much.
Anyway, a very solid read, If I could give 6/5 stars, I would.
And I won't lie, I'm probably gonna read it again once the paperback arrives.

This book had me from the jump and it never slowed down. It was passionate, it was funny, and above all else the characters were so fun to read. Character dynamics fuel a good romance story and this one has a chaotically full tank. Xandria was a riot, Artemis was amazing, and Kat was relatable as hell. I don't have enough room to gush about all the side characters, sorry Frankie and all the others. The twists and turns were so fun to get hit by along the way. If you want to read about lesbians so in love they defy the laws of reality, this is the book for you, 10/10

Sapphic Romantasy done right!!
I loved every part of this story. The FMCs are amazing (and gorgeous), the relationship development is phenomenal, the plot keeps you wanting more. 10/10 will recommend to everyone I can!! I am so excited to see how the series progresses.

Well, what can I say about Necromantic: True Love Never Dies?
Honestly, a lot. I started this as my “book before bedtime” and it quickly became my “why am I still up at 4am” read.
Mourning Star’s prose is engaging, witty, and I am voraciously ready for every other books they’re going to write.
The story flows beautifully and while I can agree that there was room for more character development, the world and plot carried me through every waking moment. I gasped. I laughed. I absolutely had so much fun reading this story.
Yall should really pick this up!

I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review.
The title was what first attracted me to this book plus this was a book from the pov of the necromancer. I have read quite a few books where the m/c is a necromancer including at least one with a female necromancer but this is the first book I have read with a female lesbian necromancer.
The style of the book will be recognized by all fantasy fiction lovers with the gathering of the group and the world building but this is a refreshing new take on the genre, the heroes are FF couples, not quite human and flawed, almost anti-heroes. While the heroes are gray the villains are deepest black - no nuances here and we can enjoy the girls chopping them up
The book is well paced - the tempo building to a good ending that sets the stage for the volumes to follow. For such a dark themed novel the tone is surprisingly light and the romances feel natural. Love the main characters and hopefully we will see the characters of Anathema and Isabel developed in upcoming books as they have great potential. As another reviewer has commented the feel is D&D but that is not the whole story as the author has a unique style that I look forward to reading more of as we follow the adventures of Xandria, Artemis and their little group

I loved this spooky high fantasy novel! If you’re a fan of necromancy, the undead, and dismantling an oppressive monarchy then this is the book for you. At the heart of this story is a beautiful sapphic romance. Xandria spends years learning necromancy to bring her love back to life (kind of puts U-haul lesbians to shame tbh, the bar is now much higher). Additionally, Necromantic is packed with hysterical witty banter and tons of action. The main characters are all strong and badass women who had me rooting for them from the start. I’m looking forward to the next in the series!

These characters are wonderful. Each have a very distinct personality that is essential to the function of both the story as well as within their found family. And don’t even get me started on the undying (literally) love between Xan and Artemis! These two have me in a chokehold and I will be holding my breath until the series is finished!
There are deep themes present in this story as it explores misogyny, political injustice, and mental health to name just a few. All of which serve to prove why reading is and should always be political. Throw in some stellar humor and it makes for a phenomenal 600 pages!

As a dark fantasy lover, this one was a solid 5 read for me! The author’s style of prose was wonderful and quick paced which made this a quick read for me. There was yearning (my favorite) and I loved the humor mixed into the darkness. Overall a great read! Highly recommend!

Book Review: Necromantic by Mourning Star
Necromantic is one of those books that doesn’t just tell a story it lingers. It seeps into your thoughts long after you’ve put it down, not because of shocking twists or spectacle, but because of the atmosphere it builds and the emotions it quietly provokes.
What struck me most was the tone. There’s a heavy, almost suffocating mood that runs through the entire book, and it feels intentional. It creates a kind of intimacy with the darker themes, pulling you into a space that feels both unsettling and strangely compelling. I found myself sitting with that feeling even when I wasn’t reading, which is always a sign a book has done something right.
Emotionally, it left me conflicted in a good way. There were moments where I felt deeply connected, almost raw, and others where I felt slightly distanced, like I was observing rather than fully immersed. That push and pull made the experience interesting, though at times I wished for just a bit more depth in certain emotional beats to really anchor those moments.
The writing itself has a distinct voice. It leans into a poetic, almost lyrical style in places, which adds to the haunting quality of the story. However, there were points where that style felt a little overindulgent, making it harder to stay grounded in what was happening. A bit more balance between atmosphere and clarity would have strengthened the overall impact.
In terms of characters, there’s an intriguing foundation, but I found myself wanting more. More nuance, more vulnerability, more moments where they felt fully realised rather than symbolic. The emotional core is there it just needed to be pushed further to truly hit.
To reach a full five stars for me, I think the book would have benefited from tightening some of its prose and deepening its character development. The ideas are strong, the mood is powerful, but refining those elements would have made the experience more immersive and emotionally resonant.
Overall, Necromantic is a dark, atmospheric read that won’t be for everyone, but for those who enjoy stories that explore the heavier, more introspective side of emotion, it offers something memorable. It’s not perfect, but it’s undeniably evocative and sometimes, that’s what stays with you the longest.

The initial premise from the start got me. The tension and the drama as the necromancer Xandria has sacrificed so much to bring her true love back from the dead: Artemis.
The story is what I yearned for from Gideon the Ninth in a strong focus on the lovers.
NECROMANTIC: TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES examines a corrupt kingdom that makes villains of those who are trying their best to stay true to themselves. There's elements of Xandria's reluctance/feeling forced to play the part of a villain mixed in with Artemis's post-resurrection amnesiac state and coming into her own personage (when the person she was in her last life might still be someone to be discovered in her own reanimated form).
I will say there are moments I love that feel like playing a DND campaign (namely the OP Xandria facing off against an overconfident party of adventurers who did NOT have plot armor). I will say the pacing of the story is closer to high fantasy/discovering the adventure as if playing a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, so fans of fantasy-world-building alongside their romance should enjoy this work!
Also there's new, unique world building that Mourning Star has done that is told in bits and pieces taught to the characters or recorded in diegetic, in-book texts. Alongside a good amount of the brooding villain angst in such quotes as early on stated:
"I learned NECROMANCY for you, Artemis"
(bc who wouldn't want to bend the laws of life itself for your true love?) Alongside characters who are... "brought to life", let's say, within the work in later chapters.
The main focus of this story is definitely in the love/hate/and rediscovery of the characters with each other alongside subplots of kingdom corruption, vengeance, and a plague that mysteriously keeps the dead from rising.
Who gets to define the villain? And does the villain ever get the chance to redefine themselves outside of society's strictures and in rewritten history? What does the path to godhood look like in a world where death defies itself?
NECROMANTIC: TLND is a carefully planned lore universe with inclusive queer fantasy elements that stars Sapphic necromancy, irreverent revenants, and reimagined deities and magical creatures.

I don't even know where to start with this book! First and foremost I encourage everyone who reads this to send live reactions to Mourning Star because it made the experience 10000 times more fun. I have so many wonderful things to say about this book (I mean, I have 57 highlighted quotes and I NEVER highlight books) so lets dive into it.
Starting off with Xandria—I am obsessed with this woman. She is loyal to a fault, unwavering, and slightly crazy (rightfully so) in all of the best ways. I cannot wait to learn more about her as the series goes on and watch her powers evolve in upcoming installments.
The growth we see in Artemis is subtle, but as the story goes on she settles into a strong, level-headed, persona that fits her very well. She tempers Xan's high energy and calms the loud thoughts that plague our necromancer. Together the two perfectly balance on another and after that ending... well lets just say I am curious to see what fires our two FMCs will be putting out next.
The band of side characters Mourning Star has created are just as fun and lovable as our FMCs. They all bring something special and significant into the story, and their personalities blend to create a wonderful little found family that lends itself to demonstrating varying levels of love and support while also serving up comedy that lightens the story.
Mourning Star does a fantastic job stringing together beautiful descriptions throughout the story, breaking the fourth wall in such a skillful way that adds intrigue and humor, while leaving little clues and easter eggs along the way. Having talked to the author, I know that the MANY questions I asked while reading is only the tip of the iceberg in what is sure to be an in depth, well thought out, series and I personally can't wait for whats next!

Duel 1st Person POV. 5🌟 3🌶️. 505 pages
4 Spicy Scenes
Usually I balk at books over 400 pages but this book was a wild ride! There are necromancers, a whole ass magic system and the beginning was giving me very much 1980’s frankenhooker vibes, without the lawnmower accident, the red light district and the murder, well there’s a lot of murder 😂 Think Game of Thrones if it were sapphic and had badass women exacting feminine rage and righteousness!
Xandria is a necromancer who will stop at nothing to resurrect her long lost love, and when she succeeds her world turns to chaos. Artemis was executed by a mad king some time ago and after her resurrection hell breaks loose. Was it worth it? Can true love survive?
We’ve got bounties and battles galore, a necromancer who is an unreliable narrator for the majority of the book, a fae who is slightly insane and a resurrected woman who doesn’t remember her past. There’s demigods and old gods, a tyrannical king and an incurable plague. So much murder and adventure, and honestly this book was insanely good for a debut novel and it’ll have you wanting more and I cannot wait for book 2!

Usually I balk at books over 400 pages but this book was a wild ride! There are necromancers, a whole ass magic system and the beginning was giving me very much 1980’s frankenhooker vibes, without the lawnmower accident, the red light district and the murder, well there’s a lot of murder 😂 Think Game of Thrones if it were sapphic and had badass women exacting feminine rage and righteousness!
Xandria is a necromancer who will stop at nothing to resurrect her long lost love, and when she succeeds her world turns to chaos. Artemis was executed by a mad king some time ago and after her resurrection hell breaks loose. Was it worth it? Can true love survive?
We’ve got bounties and battles galore, a necromancer who is an unreliable narrator for the majority of the book, a fae who is slightly insane and a resurrected woman who doesn’t remember her past. There’s demigods and old gods, a tyrannical king and an incurable plague. So much murder and adventure, and honestly this book was insanely good for a debut novel and it’ll have you wanting more and I cannot wait for book 2!

The Writing: Mourning Star has a beautiful prose style. The world-building is vivid, and the author does a fantastic job of balancing the grim reality of necromancy with the emotional weight of a lost legacy.
The Plot: The story itself is great. The tension of being hunted by a "pissed off king" while navigating a dying kingdom kept the pages turning.

Necromantic: True Love Never Dies is exactly what it promises in the title—dark, emotional, and steeped in themes of love that refuses to stay buried. From the start, I was drawn into a world where grief, longing, and magic are tightly intertwined, and I honestly didn’t want to leave it.
What I loved most was how emotionally heavy this story feels without ever becoming overwhelming in a way that loses its heart. There’s a constant tension between loss and hope, and I found myself really connecting with the idea that love can persist even when everything else has changed. It’s haunting, but also strangely tender.
The romance itself felt deeply atmospheric. It isn’t light or simple—it carries weight, history, and consequence. I personally really enjoyed how the emotional connection felt like something that transcended the usual boundaries of life and death. It made every interaction feel meaningful, even when things were painful or uncertain.
The tone is consistently dark, but it’s balanced with moments of vulnerability that hit surprisingly hard. Those quieter scenes gave the story a lot of emotional depth for me, and they lingered just as much as the bigger, more dramatic moments.

I found Necromantic: True Love Never Dies to be an emotionally intense, fast-paced book. The characters are engaging, their relationships feel fleshed out, and I quickly found myself invested in how things would develop.
There are certainly some dark elements to this book (unsurprising, given that necromancy is literally in the title), but there is also a lot of humor in it. The overall tone is emotional, but it is not nearly as bleak as the plot might suggest. There were moments where I genuinely laughed out loud.
There’s some really lovely worldbuilding throughout this book. Much of it is presented organically through dialogue, but we also learn a good deal from the characters and what they discover themselves. I found that the amnesia elements in the story especially paired well with this.
There wasn’t a lot that I wished there was more of, but as much as I loved seeing her with Kat, it didn’t feel like Frankie really affected things much , especially given her proximity to the rest of the main cast. It would’ve been nice to see her interact more with characters besides Kat. It also would have been nice to learn more about the nature of eromantic bonds. Regardless, Necromantic: TLND is an entertaining and emotional book, and I am excited to see what comes next.

This was a really fun and refreshing necromancer story. This one felt genuinely different, I especially enjoyed the different gods and the magic system. The abilities were creative and kept things interesting the whole time.

Xandria is… insane. Not in a gimmicky way, but in that deeply compelling, morally grey, "I will burn the world down for you and I won’t apologize" kind of way. And the thing is, you believe her. She's not just powerful, she's desperate. And that desperation hurts.
And Artemis… oh my god. Watching her wake up with no memory, thrown into a world where she's been literally brought back from death, is both terrifying and heartbreaking. The tension between them is EVERYTHING. One remembers too much, the other remembers nothing. It's painful in the best way.
One second it's dark, bloody, and brutal, next second it's sarcastic, witty, and laugh out loud funny. The dialogues makes you feels alive, like you're watching these characters exist rather than just reading about them.
And the way Xandria looks at Artemis… even when Artemis doesn't know her? will broke something in you.
I finished this feeling like I'd been emotionally dragged through snow, blood, magic, and heartbreak and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
And I loved every single second of reading it.

I will preface this by saying I am NOT an epic fantasy girly. It's usually so dry and boring, I just can't get into it. HOW-EV-ER, this is a fun time. The central relationship develops at a solid pace, and the side characters are just lovely. (Kat fan club prez, checking in!)

A necromancer who, if you didn't know better, might be fueled by excessive caffeine and lust. At least she knows what she wants, or thinks she does.
Necromancer must haves:
1. Dead girlfriend's body
2. Ability to antagonize multiple guards and the king at the same time.
3. Willingness to experiment.
Necromantic is a fun debut from what's about to be a massive series. A wild ride of emotion and magical antics. A great read that I wasn't ready to have end.

Its a good start for a indie author, I found the writing style different as the chapters were written as if you actually were that person. I enjoyed the premise of the story and the idea the author had for their book. I really loved the character Kat.
I will say the story is abit chaotic along with timelines and information but I was able to keep up with it
Otherwise I really enjoy the book, it was a wild ride with with alot of twists and turns.

This is such a feel good story! One that you won't put down once you pick it up. The FMC's are great. There's a part that gets confusing on purpose and when you look back you get this oooh moment and it's wild. All the twists and turns keep you on your toes. And who doesn't like skeletons and raising the dead?

I loved the main character because man she was a firecracker and whity as all get out, but man I could just not keep with timeline and plot. I did not gel with the characters, so I made it about halfway through and regrettably had to DNF this book. I may go back finish it one day and update this review, but it was just a little bit chaotic of a storyline for me to follow right now.
