The burning of Two Rivers was supposed to end the age of witches. With the covens scattered and the Cull expected to wipe out the last desperate traces of the Old Religion, the Cradle could begin to heal from the scars left by Magic’s wicked claws.

If you are a fan of dark fantasy with witches being actively hunted, a magic system with real stakes and a painful price to each spell, a looming danger of a mysterious, powerful, dark entity, and beautiful, descriptive language—this is a book for you!
The complicated relationships between POV characters—Taylor, a traumatized witch searching for her lost brother, and Eden, a witch hunter trying to break free from the shadow of her legendary witch-hunter father—perfectly illustrates how hard it is to go against the beliefs we are taught as children. I loved watching how both of them slowly began to work together to overcome the brewing evil and how their friendship started to form. But my favorite character was Taylor’s familiar—Wormwood. He is simply my spirit animal, with how sassy and sarcastic he is. I demand his plushie to hug at night!
This book was a breath of fresh air for me. I struggle to finish books nowadays because all the stories seem familiar. It’s like I’ve read a rendition of them somewhere before, and the characters are so cliché a lot of times. The Midnight King was unique in that sense. I loved the insertion of secret documents, rendered like you’re actually reading a letter with stamps and everything. I loved the plot twists and the crumbs leading me to guess them and feel smart for a change (lol). The characters and their backstories lead to complicated interactions between them. I LIVE FOR THAT SHT. Give me complex characters that bud heads over their beliefs until the plot makes them stop, and I’m running. Give me a badass heroine who actually makes sense and is of color, and I’m dropping everything I’m doing and speeding to the bookstore. Give me Wormwood, and… that’s it. He is mine now, and I’m not sharing.

THIS WAS SO GOOD!!! The MC's were amazing, (Eden's my fav) the villains were amazing. 5/5 starts, would def read again and would absolutely recommend!!!
