Painter, Brooke Belle, is running from her past and hoping that a few weeks in a quaint country cabin will bring her artistic muse back from the brink. But when she lands smack dab in the middle of Asheland Mobile Park, she’s sure there’s been a mistake. Not only has her mentor rented her a dilapidated mobile home in the middle of nowhere, but the trailer park is filled with big, burly, growly, flirty, sexy-as-hell lumberjacks. And one in particular is making her think that maybe she’s landed right where she needs to be.
Tagan James has a lot on his shoulders. As second in a woodcutting crew of bear shifters, he’s got all he can handle keeping his people from tearing each other apart on the job site. But when the beautiful, and terribly human, Brooke Belle lands on his doorstep, all honest and vulnerable and pulling at his animal’s protective instincts, he has to decide whether to boot her out of his park to protect his heart, or take a risk and save her muse.
Every bear shifter knows finding a mate can destroy a dominant like him. But as Brooke shows Tagan just how strong she can be, he’s second guessing everything—including his vow to never fall for a woman.

So, I'm looking at my categories to shelve this and I noticed I had a shelf called "bear shifter smut". Nice! Very convenient. And, if you would have told me that I had this shelf, I would maybe have called you a damn filthy liar. Just because I'm a jerk, not because I thought you were lying.
If you are thinking to yourself: "you know, I just want to read a book series about a bunch of lumberjacks who live in a trailer park and turn into bears and find their true loves." But, you are also thinking, "But, I really don't have a lot of time, so this true love needs to happen really fast. Like, within a day of meeting. I've got a lot of shit to do. Those Christmas presents ain't buying themselves!"
Fuck you, Santa! You let me down again... just like the year I asked for my daddy to come home and love us again.
Anyway, painful childhood aside, if you have ever thought these things, this is the book for you. Series really, because I've read three before I even started this first review. They are pretty damn short.
Since this is supposed to be a review, I guess I'll tell you about this book. The girl is named Brooke, and she's an artist with emotional pain from trauma. (Artists with angst? Naahh, that's not a thing.) She has a mentor, which, okay, that seems weird because it reminds me of Seinfeld and that wasn't my favorite episode. Well, except for Round-tine. The mentor gets her to take a retreat-vacation and sends her to a trailer park in the woods. Trailer park? Worst. Mentor. Ever.
I retract my earlier statement. This dog is killing it as a mentor.
At the trailer park she meets Tagan and is instantly in love with him. He's being all moody. *sigh* I hate moody men. It's like, "sheesh, there is only room for one neurotic moody crazy person in a relationship, dude, and I've got us more than covered."
Anyway, they have smutty sex and angsty love and blah blah blah... It was okay. I really liked all of the guys in the trailer park. And, that is probably the only time I will ever utter those words in my life. So, I wanted to keep reading their insta-love stories. I'll keep you updated.
This was better than I expected though not by a lot. It's a romance novella, and that should have been my first clue that it wasn't going to be a good fit. I'm not a huge fan of novellas in the first place, and particularly not for romance. You just don't have enough space to develop an adequate romance in so short a work. And yes, I know that's personal taste.
Fortunately, also in personal taste, you have the yummiest alpha that ever strode confidently through the forest, master of all he surveyed. I mean, Tagan is all that and a bag of chips. No, better, bacon. Mmmmm bacon. Anyway, he's yummy as bacon with that whole strong, protective vibe that makes you want to curl in and just wallow. Further, he's all about the empowerment, baby, and that just ratchets it up to eleven.
Brooke, on the other hand, is kind of a limp noodle. Yeah, trauma, blah, blah, blah. Not that I want to denigrate a survivor, but it really is just silly to be wearing a bandage over a months-healed wound. Someone that damaged, that long, really should be seeing a competent mental health professional, not following the shaky advice of some "mentor" who bundles her off into a trailer park in the middle of the woods. Even with seven virile, protective men around, that seems like just bad advice. Also, half Brooke's actions I'm screaming in my head "bad idea! You hardly know this guy!" I mean, yeah, it's romance and he's the lead so you know it's going to be all cuddly and nice, but I just can't squelch that voice going "you do not go into the woods at night with a guy you met mere hours ago no matter how special his special spot may be."
So problems. A lot of that is probably due to having to move that romance along but-fast if you're going to get to the smoochies soon enough in that very short space. Which brings me back to not being such a fan of novellas.
Qualms aside, I liked Tagan and I'm glad he turned out as good as he is. I don't think I'll sign up for the rest in the series, though I'm tempted. I suspect they're all novellas and I just don't have the patience for that format.
A note about Steamy: This is the upper side of my mid range. There's two explicit sex scenes and that's a lot for so cramped a story. Also, they happen like "say, you're cute, let's have sex". Which, again, novella...
I didn't look at the number of pages when I decided to read this, so I was surprised at the fast pace of the story. It was a cute one, short and to the point. Maybe a bit too short, I wanted more explanations and details when it came to the new world, but still, it was nice. Nothing special, just a cute Sunday morning read. Enjoy! :)
Really, I didn't want to read a single book of this series. The title, the cover were a bit too much. Not until I saw one of my friend reading it, then another one and another one that I thought maybe I'm missing something here. So here I am done with the first. I really really like it why : - I just spent a few hours reading this one, was it a novella? Not for me. Short indeed but I don't know if it's because of the writing, the plot or because it's a thin book. For me, it's a thin book, a story easy to read, to follow, a great storyline! - The plot and pages : since it's not a thick book, expectation would be like a quick read but it wasn't a novella. This book got a plot and characters with layers. - My expectation : not much really, I thought it was like those alpha books with or without the mystical side, love at 1st sight, MINE. Okay there is a love at first sight but it wasn't that rush considering the circumstances. It was more like you found someone you are really comfortable with, someone that make you feel really at ease, peaceful, warm and secure. And I was totally wrong with the love at 1st sight because not the 1st she met. - Scorching hot? Not really, for adult yes but it was good for me, I read a book with adults but it wasn't 100% or even 40% smutty read. - the crew : just love them with how caring they were and the touch. Lumberjack ahaha made me though of White snow! - what I like: it was Brooke story and about her at the end. (her nickname too)
My other expectations : I love the 1st hoping that I will continue to enjoy the next ones.
Brooke and Tagan's story is the first in this bear shifter series. This was my first book where the shifters werent filled with the typical feline shifteres such as lion or wolf. When we start out the book Joyce sets out the whole setting with lots of descriptions of the place. You can really picture what you are reading. When we meet Brooke she is trying to find herself again after a negative incident. When her friend sends her to the place where she meets Tagan. There is some background between her friend and Tagan that you will learn while reading this book. The two hit it off right away but you can tell by those around them that something isnt 'normal'. This is not the typical shifter book and we get to see what it is like for someone who is not a shifter become one. By the descriptions provided, a painful experience.
This story starts with a woman going through a rough time in her life was sent to a "resort" by a friend to get her mojo back. Well, this resort turned out to be a trailer park surrounded by a group of big, strong but also sweet lumberjack werebears. This made our heroine the trailer park princess. The story was quite predictable but made for a cute shifter read. I really liked the personalities of the werebears and will read more of to see how things play out. The ending left much to be desired but at least it wasn't a cliffhanger.
Mhm. Maybe novella's just aren't for me because everything was so rushed. Within the span of two days Brooke goes from being scared of the lumberjacks, to falling in love with one, to realising bear shifters exist, to being turned into one herself. Her sudden acceptance of all of this is absurd and had me rolling my eyes. The ending ruined the book for me, creating a fake problem that gets resolved a few sentences later with no character development in between. But hey, it's a quick HEA for anyone that's bored.
I’m traveling a lot and need something fun and not too heavy to read. - I think I like this take on shifters. - I adored all the male shifters. - She is the kind of woman that made me avoid f/m romance for fifteen years. I wanted her to grow a pair. She was just short of ditzy. I don’t like ditzy unless they’re funny. This chick was not funny. Her trauma was hard for me to swallow as something so mind altering. - I am curious where this writer is going to go with this world.
I read the Wolves of Winter's Edge series by Joyce and decided I'd work my way through her original works. This book (novella length book, really) was okay. The story starts off strong. A human stumbles upon a trailer park of werebears by the intervention of her muse.
The characters of the park are fun and extremely likable, but I feel like the story lost it's way towards the end. The pack held my interest though, so I'm stuck reading the next book to find out what happens next! Sometimes it's hard being a shifter book lover..
Rating Legend: 5 star-loved it 4 star-liked it 3 star-it was okay 2 star-didn't like it 1 star-hated it
I'm really enjoying these quick reads. This just like the others is a fast paced shifter romance with all the trimmings. There's definitely some angst, some humour and a good portion of loving. The main characters are likeable with great chemistry and lots of potential. There's a good mention of secondary characters so you already have an idea who's story is next and you have a feel of them personally. I cant complain it gave me exactly what I wanted from reading it. If you've read any of T.S Joyce's previous books and enjoyed then you'll love this one to.
This book started out really strong for me but lost a little steam at the end.
The build-up between Tagen and Brooke was really hot. Most of the other lumberjack werebears were great and I look forward to their stories. Connor was a jerk and I didn't like how that situation ended.
This was a super quick easy read for me that I really enjoyed and I plan on binge reading all of T.S. Joyce's books in the upcoming weeks.Lumberjack Werebear has some hot sex scenes and playful banter along with great characters making this a series to check out if you love shifter romances. I'm really excited for kellen and all the others guys' books 🐻
Brook lost her muse after being attacked. Meredith her mentor senator her on a little sabbatical unknown to Brooke that it would be to a trailer park filled with bear shifters.
Tagan A shifter helps Brook regain what she has lost and find a family also.
Wanted : the Missing Protective Alpha Males that abandoned our h :(
When I 1st finished this story I was all set to give this rather bland story 3 stars for its lackluster plot and underserved and mainly underdeveloped characters ..... Honestly I'm really sick and tired of being short changed on short stories, just because it's less word doesn't mean it has to have less depth... Whether it's 50 pages or 500 doesn't matter that a complete and interesting story, characters can be interesting and well rounded not shallow and vapid in a story with depth even if it's just a lil over 100 pages or more and at first that was all that got me,how the story felt like with Brooke's background and mugging the scene was set for an interesting story that never really arrived..... But after going to sleep and waking and thinking on it I began to see other reasons I walked away unhappy with this story, Where the Hell are all the True Alpha Bears?!?!?!? Alpha isn't just a lame title some self important asshole wears it's supposed to be strong men who don't take shit off of anybody and take care of their own. But when Brooke out sweet Artist still recovering from a violent mugging supposed mate of 2nd/beta Tagan and mascot/ Trailer park princess to the Ashe group of bears needs them all the most, fighting literally for her life, trying not to get killed and or raped etc. ,Where are they???? Crying telling her to run just sitting there on their butts coz their insane cruel "alpha" told them not to... WTH?!?! Soo Brooke scrambles for her life Tagan fights insane Connor and then Jeb, ( while the others who claimed to care ,who showed up by her bedside when she had nightmares afraid she was hurt) do nothing when she's fighting to stay alive... Tagan her mate ( even if she didn't ask him) ( what a whiney baby) see her get injured by Connor and then slapped around by Jed and doesn't rip either a new one because of lame ass rules ?!?!?! WTF?!?! This is your Mate damn it!!! Where's all the protectiveness Big strong alpha type males are known for ?!?!? Then instead of him or any of the COWARDLY others stepping up and taking their "alpha " down when he's gonna kill their so called "beloved" Brooke ,the ever cowardly Tagan bites her and changes her against her will.... What a JERK!!! If it had been to save her due to injuries or something I'd understand but to do it against her will because their all to wimpy to even try and protect her against the clearly cruel and insane alpha Jed ? It was a very cowardly act in my book and surely shouldn't have been forgiven easily ,if at all . And definitely not in the easy neat little way it was... Brooke leaves the next day with nary a trace of bitterness or true anger with all the men who should have protected her instead just cowardly hung their head and simpered and cried and yelled for her to run... Tagan even had the nerve to be hurt she left?!?! Their should have been raw moments of yelling and screaming of feeling abandoned by all the important facts they all kept her willingly ignorant of their but her in danger to begin with and then all their combined willing cowardice that almost killed her, instead she walks away almost not feeling worthy of him for not being able to forgive and forget soo easily.. WTF??? Right?!?!?! To me when it came to the guys I kept thinking of the idea who's worse the guy say raping a woman in the street? Or the person or persons who walk by and or watch and do nothing ? Connor and Jed are evil in my book but the guys just sat and did nothing and Tagan is not a hero for me coz he certainly DID NOT do enough!! He was right Brooke was the strong one she went off dealt with her new probs. and new life and then sent for him coz since she hadn't before Tagan as usual was too weak to fight for his mate ... Brooke deserved soo much better :( Btw after Brooke leaves Tagan the weak willed becomes alpha, change in leadership was important after all that BS but not before ? Brooke deserved a man who treated like she was worth fighting for and protecting,a human non-alpha could have treated better than Tagan... We all deserved better, Weird, at 1st I thought this just a bland little story but the more I think of it the more I dislike the weak willed men and Hate this story. Off to hit delete now...
I was banging around on Goodreads one night looking for a quick and fun shifter book when someone recommended T.S. Joyce. From the title of Lumberjack Werebear, I had the feeling this was going to be either really bad or really fun. I was pleased to find that this was a surprisingly good little book. It wasn’t all fun and games but had some action thrown in which made me a happy little camper.
An artist, Brooke is broken and lost after being attacked. When her mentor suggests a getaway to help find her mojo to paint again, she jumps on it. She was expecting a quaint little cabin. Her destination ended up being a trailer park from hell in the middle of nowhere, filled with a bunch of big burly lumberjacks.
Tagan is the second in command of his bear shifter crew, and the last thing he needs is a broken little human causing chaos. Alas, she calls to his bear and instead of chasing her off he just wants to fix her. At the same time, he has to contend with a double whammy. The most unstable and dangerous bear of the group is also utterly fixated on Brooke.
Even though Tagan wasn’t as alpha as I like my heroes and Brooke was a bit too timid for my taste, I enjoyed their story. It was an interesting introduction to the series, despite being left with a bunch of questions. Mainly, why Meredith thought it was a good idea to basically throw Brooke to a pack of bears, much less a pack with so many problems!
Tagen and Brooke were sweet together making for a great little read. At the time I read Lumberjack Werebear, it and the rest of the series were available on Kindle Unlimited. So I know when I find little snippets of time and am after a fast little shifter fix, I’ll be back for more of this series.
Oh my gosh. So, this was my first book ever by TS, though I already owned a few by her, just hadn’t gotten around to them yet. Let me tell you, that was a big mistake on my part! I LOVED this book and her writing so much, that I don’t feel I could properly explain how much I loved it. Words fail me.
This book does contain a bit of “insta-love”, which anyone who knows me knows I loathe…but this book pulls it off seamlessly! Normally, regardless of how much I like a book, the insta-love type of thing still makes me cringe. But in this book, that didn’t happen at all. The whole thing just works together as a whole, and didn’t once make my inner critic raise her head or snarl her lip in disgust lol. Great story, great characters.
Overall, I highly recommend!!! Now I have to go, book 2 is calling my name, resistance is futile!
I liked this one, found it to be an interesting take on shifters, but I do wish we could have gotten more of what was going on with the other shifters, they were only mentioned in passing. I also wished that we could have gotten more of the history of the group.
Brooke's story broke my heart, but I did like too see her so out of her comfort zone when she first arrived. Tagan was perfect for helping her find herself again and to be strong.
2022 review: Great read! Ooh I simply loved Tagan! Strong, compassionate, and the perfect mate for our heroine. I really hope the next book is for Kellen!
This was a sweet story with a lot of healing, individual evolution, an endearing cast of side characters, a little passion, and a whole lot of heart.
As much as I love it when a Change happens and the Changed fully accepts with wonder and a firm sense of reality, not underestimating all the challenges they'll face, this instance of Change was very different and, dare I say, better. The way Brooke felt at that moment and then what she realized needed to happen and finally to her full evolution...stunning.
There were quite a few cheesy moments but they were overshadowed by the need to come to grips with personal tragedy and not just overcome it, but to own it and all its facets. I truly enjoyed getting to know these characters and felt that Tagan and Brooke were fantastic together. They had both chemistry and feels. I do wish there were a bit more with getting to know Tagan since we get to know Brooke quite well. Other than that small issue, this was a great read and I'm very eager to dive into the rest of the series.
