She’s trained her whole life to kill monsters like him and the dragon he rides. Now, he may be the only one who can save her…

Humans are treated like cattle by the Godforged, the terrible creatures created by the gods to wage a never-ending war with each other. Fiona’s spent her life learning to wield magic stolen from the divine, to protect her people from the violence. Now she’s given the chance to become the thing she’s sworn to kill.

The God of Darkness’s champion is dead, and he’s holding a series of trials to decide who will be his next, open to anyone, including humans. If Fiona wins, she’d control his army… and how it treats innocent humans. And none of them know of the powers she wields…

These trials are filled with the strongest and most ruthless of the Godforged. But if they discover the secrets she hides, it will doom all her people.

In this world of magic and violence, there’s one person who truly understands secrets. Azric Cyrus, Death’s champion and first dragon rider, is the most brutal of all the Godforged. And the most beautiful. With wings of bone, shadows, and seduction as his deadliest weapons, even the gods listen when he speaks. Even more reason for Fiona to be wary when he takes an interest in her.

Destiny is not a fixed thing, and as its strings are pulled from behind the shadows, these two broken souls must learn to trust each other. Their lives are the least that hang in the balance.

Perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, Crowns of Nyaxia, and The Games Gods Play, Shadow Trials is the first in a long, epic romantasy series that will follow multiple couples. It does not end an HEA, but the series will.

This book had me sucked in from the start! It’s everything you want in a fantasy and more!

A badass heroin fighting for her place in the male dominated world of the priesthood she was raised in. She has to fight tooth and nail to carve out her own path.

A morally grey MMC who will do absolutely anything to save the world, even if that means loosing himself.

Dragons, bonds, enemies to lovers, secrets, impossible trials, and found family all wrapped up and this fantasy world!

The world of Nyth will draw you in and keep you on the edge of your seat! It will have you laughing, cheering, and it will break your heart.

I cannot begin to express how much I loved this book. 10/10 a must read!

🌶️half spice

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and given honestly.

Would you like a book that keeps you up all night, that has a plot so plotting all other plots pale compared to it, how about so much action you think you're in a MMORPG and currently raiding at 1am, how about horror and trauma to boot, strong main character and lore for days. Well, look no further because this book has all that in abundance. And for the low, low price of your sadness and tears, knowing once you reach the end, you have to wait for the next book, it can all be yours.

I just got slammed in the face with a plot so rich and detailed that I feel like I slipped into the book's world myself. I have read so many books, and honestly, sometimes it's hard to see a plot in books. Sometimes I am underwhelmed by them, well, not this book, this book slammed down the plot and was like, “Are you ready to lose yourself? Are you ready for more story than you can shake a stick at... well, here I am.” I was not disappointed. I was consumed by the world laid before my feet and the characters, the build-up and history; it was just amazing.

I would say almost from the get-go, the book was dark and gritty and gives you a great introduction to our female lead, Fiona. She is totally a badass. I love that she is smart and strong; I love myself a good female lead, and I felt like I got that in spades with Fiona. I loved getting to know her and her story; I found it really easy to put myself in her shoes and just go with the story. There was friendly banter, epic character interactions, and a well-written build-up to something spectacular, and it was so easy to read. I think the only time I really paused was when I was taking in information on things I didn't know about yet, otherwise, I ate it all up.

Oh, this is action-packed to the brim. My cup runneth over, and I revelled in it. I was totally spoiled, in fact, and so pleased. The whole story was dripping with dark grittiness, there were shocks and an unapologetic way about it that had me reading long into the wee hours of the morning. I found myself totally consumed by a need to know what happened next and how it would all end, and not wanting it to end all at once. I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation, waiting for each big revelation yet dreading what it would bring. While I was grinning at the action, there were also dark themes and gore...and sometimes I was sobbing my little heart out in the dead of night. This book, at times, really had my emotions on the run around, and a few times I thought my heart was being pulled out of my own chest. It was phenomenally written, and done so well that honestly, there was hardly anything I struggled with or did not like. The only thing that threw me off now and then were the many names, which I sometimes had to pause and check my notes for. Otherwise, the book was perfect for me!!

*This is an ARC Review, but all thoughts and opinions are my own*

Shadow Trials pulled me in with a really intriguing premise—a human priestess navigating divine trials using tattoos and potions to earn the title of a god’s champion. That alone gives it a slightly more intellectual, strategic feel than a lot of romantasy, which I enjoyed. That said, the first half was slightly difficult to settle into. The rules of the world and the structure of the trials felt unclear at times, but I found myself wondering if that confusion was intentional. Since Fiona herself is sheltered and learning everything in real time, the reader is also thrown into that same disorientation alongside her.

Spice Level: 🌶️
This is definitely a slow-burn romance. I’d rate the spice level at about a 1/5—very light, with the focus being more on the emotional rather than the physical connection. The relationship between Fiona and Azric is clearly being developed with intention, and it feels like groundwork is being laid for something deeper (and likely spicier) in future books.

🌎 World & Story
Once the second half kicks in, everything starts to click. The worldbuilding becomes clearer, the stakes sharpen, and the looming “greater evil” begins to take shape in a compelling way. I especially enjoyed the darker undertones—the cruelty of the gods toward their champions and the humans of the world adds a layer of tension and moral complexity that elevates the story beyond a typical fantasy competition arc. Most of the trials focus on strategy, which I found a welcome departure from most romantasy books. By the end, the pacing really picks up, and the cliffhanger absolutely delivers. It left me eager for the next installment.

📚Character Development
Character work is one of the strongest elements here. Fiona’s background is explored in depth, particularly her harsh upbringing, and it informs her resilience and decision-making throughout the trials. Watching her grow from sheltered priestess to someone beginning to grasp the broader, darker truths of her world was satisfying. The emotional weight tied to both her past and the present cruelty of the gods adds a lot of depth.

Azric, as the male lead, is intriguing but not my favorite MMC. His physical description—orange eyes and long crimson nails—felt slightly off-putting to me personally, which made it harder to fully warm up to him. Still, his role as a fellow champion and eventual love interest works well within the story.

✨ Final Thoughts
Overall, Shadow Trials stands out as a more thoughtful, layered take on romantasy. While the beginning may feel a bit opaque, the payoff in the latter half makes it worth sticking with. Between the rich character development, morally complex worldbuilding, and a strong cliffhanger ending, this is a promising start to a series—especially for readers who enjoy a slower, more intellectual build alongside their romance.

Advanced Reader Copy Review

I just finished this book yesterday, and honestly, it’s one of the best books I’ve read in 2026 so far. It’s a 5 star book for me. The world-building completely blew me away, the gods especially had me hooked. I think my favorites have to be Veris and Taldor (I’m obsessed 😭). I love how they’re small but have these huge mouths on them, the way they speak, so blunt and absolute makes them feel incredibly unique and memorable.

The author’s writing style is another huge standout. It’s immersive, engaging, and constantly keeps you wanting more. From the very beginning, the story just launches. You’re immediately grounded in who the main character is, how the world works, and what’s at stake. It’s very “bam, bam, bam let’s go,” and I loved that fast-paced momentum. I was hooked from the first page and genuinely didn’t want to put the book down.

I also really loved both the MMC and FMC, but I especially appreciated how much focus we got on the FMC (Fiona) in this book. Her perspective felt strong, intentional, and central to the story in a way that made everything more impactful.

Chapters 55 and 56 absolutely stood out to me. They were some of the most emotional moments in the book. After hearing so much about this particular character, finally getting that deeper insight especially in chapter 56 was honestly heartbreaking. It really highlights the emotional weight of what these champions go through. The writing in those chapters was beautiful and deeply moving.

During the trial, we also lost a character I had grown really attached to and that moment hit hard. It’s funny because part of me knew not to get attached, like there were subtle hints that something drastic might happen to him… but I couldn’t help it. He was written in such a layered, compelling way that you naturally connect with him. When it finally happened, it broke my heart. But at the same time, I understood why it had to be him. He almost felt like the “perfect” character in hiding, and losing him made everything feel more real.

Another thing I really appreciated was how the true villains are still kept very vague. We get just enough description to be intrigued, but not nearly enough to fully understand them yet—and that mystery is so exciting. It builds anticipation perfectly for what’s coming next.

This is easily one of the most immersive magical worlds I’ve experienced in a while. I’m a little sad that all the books aren’t out yet, but at the same time, I love being able to sit with each one and speculate. Like… after everything that happened in the trial, it ended like that?! Mind blown.

And I cannot wait to get more of Azric’s POV in the next book. I’m SO excited.

Overall, this book delivered on every level for me: world-building, characters, pacing, and emotional depth. I’ll definitely be thinking about it for a long time.

Shadow Trials is my first read by author Evelyn Hart. I found her on Threads and she hooked me with her posts about this book. Since I have been reading more and more fantasy oriented stories lately, it was an easy choice to take a chance on this new to me author. I can honestly say I am curious about the events that will take part in book 2 of this series already.

Fiona Thorne, the human FMC, is a strong character from the get go. She was raised among a group of men who trained her. With that training came special skills that are kept hidden from others. The land she lives in isn’t kind to humans. This is due to the fact that the gods and goddesses have waged war for 80 years, but their champions carry out the fighting instead of them taking part. Humans are used as fodder for their armies and looked upon as weak and disposable, for the most part.

Azric Cyrus is the MMC and he is truly something else. He is the strongest of the champions and impossible to beat. He is feared by all. He wants to end the war games and train for the real war that is coming to Nyth. Unfortunately, that path requires a lot of background work.

The book starts off with Fiona going full throttle and it pulled me in. As the story progressed, I did struggle at times with keeping everything straight with the god and goddesses, the Godforged, and who had command of what powers. But most fantasy oriented storylines seem to imbue the first book with the full gamut of world building, and I knew I could make my way through it. When the trials started, and Fiona was learning more about the competitors, herself, and Azric the story picked up quickly for me.

Fiona, Azric, and the other champions all dealt with painful “training” during their earlier years, although at different levels. Details are on the page and it isn’t for the faint of heart, so prepare yourself to the best of your ability. It was interesting to get to see how the champions felt about the war they’ve been waging for 80 years. To say they were forged is an understatement.

I wouldn’t say this story has romance in it, although there is a connection between Fiona and Azric. In regard to spice, I would say 0.5 and that is being generous. I feel confident saying their connection was built in this book, with the emphasis on a more intellectual and emotional connection, rather than physical. I don’t think a physical relationship would have made sense in this book, but I could see it evolving that way in book 2.

I enjoyed this book, more than many of the extremely hyped romantasy stories I have recently read. I look forward to continuing this series, an I plan to read this author’s Shadowed Debts series to learn the stories behind some of the characters who appear in this book.

Wow! That was a ride. I am not sure I wanted to ever end. When is the second book coming again?

This book is a dark, tension-filled fantasy that leans into survival, power, and the emotional toll of being pushed to your limits.

We follow Fiona Thorne, who is forced into a brutal series of trials in order to become a champion of Nyxthos, where strength alone is not enough to survive. Each challenge strips away another layer of certainty, forcing her to rely on instinct, strategy, and, at times, the very people she is not sure she can trust.

Fiona is a compelling lead. She is resilient and sharp, but not unbreakable. What I appreciated most was how her internal struggle is just as important as the external trials. You can feel the pressure weighing on her decisions, and it makes her growth feel real.

Azric Cyrus adds a completely different energy to the story. He is controlled, enigmatic, and difficult to read, which makes every scene he is in feel charged. There is always the sense that he knows more than he lets on, and that unpredictability makes him both intriguing and frustrating in the best way.

The chemistry between Fiona and Azric is one of the strongest aspects of the book. It is very much a slow burn, built on tension, suspicion, and reluctant reliance. They are not instantly drawn together in a soft or obvious way. Instead, their connection develops through shared danger and moments where they are forced to trust each other despite every reason not to. There is a push and pull dynamic that keeps you hooked, with just enough emotional vulnerability slipping through to hint at something deeper.

The pacing starts off measured but quickly intensifies as the trials progress. The stakes feel real, and while a few twists are familiar, the atmosphere and character dynamics keep things engaging. The sense of unease never really fades, which works perfectly for this kind of story.

Tropes include:

● Deadly trials
● Morally grey characters
● Enemies to reluctant allies to something more...
● Slow burn chemistry
● Trust and betrayal
● Survival game dynamics
● Hidden agendas
● Power struggles

Overall, this was a gripping and atmospheric read that balances action with character-driven tension. Fiona and Azric’s dynamic adds just the right amount of emotional depth to the story, making it hard to put down. It is definitely one that lingers after you finish.

I absolutely devoured this first installment of the Heartless Gods. Evelyn Hart immediately throws you into this complicated and intriguing world. Nyth is ruled by Gods and has seen a generation of endless battles fought by their Champions, and Godforged. Humankind is considered no more than cattle, and expendibable to all those stronger than them. The story follows a human, Fiona, who enters the trials to become the next Champion for The God of Darkness and Secrets.

Honestly, the world and heirarchy of Godforged, Champions, and Gods is so intricate that for the first half of the book I was so confused. Trying to keep track of all the characters, their powers and station had my head whirling at times. However, this confusion only made the book more interesting, and had me wanting to consume more. The main storyline is broken with brief Interludes that provide glimpes from other POVS. Do NOT take them to be trivial, they hold immense amount of purpose!

I will be the monster, so you don't have to.

The spice level is 1/5. The slow-burn romance is extremely well written. The emotional and physical attraction is developed intentionally over time. It was nice to read an adult fantasy book that wasn't heavy on the smut, and instead have a romance that blooms organically.

The magic system was extensive and fascinating. There are dragons, Gods, their Champions who are imbued with their godhood ability, Godforged armies with an array of abilities from lightning weilding to killing you with a single touch, and Priests who use a combination of Infusions(elixers) and Marks(tattoos that provide specific abilities when activated). Let's just say that the fighting scenes did not dissapoint!

Overall, I thought this book was phenominal. This dark fantasy had a perfect balance of action, tension, and character growth. I was glued to this book from start to finish. Special thank you to the amazing Author for the advanced reader copy. This was an unforgettable experience! Looking forward to the next installment.

SPOILERS

I will forever love an author who isn't afraid to make a book more realistic. Especially with a book that is a dark fantasy with kill-or-be-killed trials. Your heart will be ripped from your chest - It's only a matter of when. Not every character is going to make it out alive. Pick your favorites well, because not all will be Returning in the next book.

You're still my friend. You always will be.

I finished this and just kind of sat there for a second like… yeah, I’m not ready to leave this world yet.

This book drops you into a brutal, high-stakes fantasy where survival isn’t just physical—it’s mental, emotional, and strategic in ways that keep you constantly on edge. The trials at the center of the story are unforgiving, and there’s this constant feeling that one wrong move could cost everything.

Fiona Thorne really carried this story for me. She’s capable and quick-thinking, but what stood out most is that she feels everything. The pressure, the doubt, the fear—it all shows, and it makes her decisions feel heavier and more real. Watching her adapt and harden (without losing herself completely) was one of the most compelling parts of the book.

Azric Cyrus is… a problem. In the best way. He’s calm, calculated, and almost impossible to read, which makes every interaction with him feel loaded. You’re never quite sure where he stands, and that uncertainty adds such a strong layer of tension to the story.

And their dynamic? So well done. It’s not instant, it’s not easy, and it’s definitely not soft. It builds slowly through shared danger, forced proximity, and moments where trust feels more like a risk than a comfort. There’s a constant push and pull between them that keeps things interesting, and when those small cracks of vulnerability show up, they hit.

The pacing really finds its stride as the story goes on. What starts off controlled quickly turns intense as the stakes rise and the trials become more dangerous. Even when I thought I could predict where something might go, the atmosphere and character choices kept me fully locked in.

If you like stories with:
• dangerous, high-pressure trials
• morally grey characters you can’t fully trust
• slow burn, tension-heavy relationships
• shifting alliances and hidden motives
• and that constant “something is about to go wrong” feeling

…this will absolutely work for you.

Overall, this was dark, gripping, and full of tension in the best way. It’s one of those reads where the character dynamics stick with you just as much as the plot—and I’m already waiting (impatiently) for what comes next.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

Must Read Masterclass in World-Building and Slow-Burn Tension

“Is that a destiny?...Or is it a possibility?”

Where do I begin? I didn’t just read this book, I was completely consumed by it from the very first chapter. The writing is so vivid and colorful that the world feels tangible...like you are part of it and experiencing everything around you. The characters make you feel real connections and raw emotions...you either fall in love with them or loathe them for the villains they are. The plot is also so incredibly rich and full of delicious crumbs to follow every step of the way. I loved everything about this book!!! ❤️ While this is a plot-forward introduction focused on world building, the pacing is absolutely flawless. It is a story of trials, duty, and fate...everything I am drawn to in a romantasy. I was especially fascinated by the unique magic system...the marks and infusions were super intriguing and something I have personally never seen before.

Though this first installment has low to no spice, the yearning and tension are agonizing in the best way possible...knuckle biting with this slowest of burns that makes me believe that the eventual payoff will be legendary. I also enjoyed the woven interludes that give you that 'peek behind the curtain' providing crucial insight giving the story that much more texture. This is an incredible start to a journey of destiny, and I so here for it!!! Can't wait to see where this story goes next!!!

I was introduced to Evelyn Hart's writing recently and already know that she is one of those authors that I will read anything she writes from here on out. ✨️ While this is connected to her debut Shadowed Debts series (which you should absolutely also read for the full experience), Shadow Trials can be read as a standalone. It does have darker themes and scenes so please be sure to check your trigger warnings. ⚠️

Writing: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: N/A - 🫑
Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

4.5⭐️ Epic Fantasy / Slow Burn Romantasy

I just finished this ARC this morning and I am still sitting here trying to process everything! The world and its magic system are so different than anything I have read to date and it makes reading Shadow Trials feel very fresh and different, and I really enjoyed the authors writing style.

Finding out that the war that has been raging in Nyth for the last 80 years has just been training for the larger threat to come was a shock, only to then realize that the Gods don’t seem to have any desire to work together toward a common goal of that larger threat was very frustrating! However, I think understanding the larger implications of why the Gods created the Champions and the other Godsforged helped Fiona start changing her opinions on both. The relationship she built with Darian, that trust and friendship, helped her then be able to the build a friendship with Jaren, Elara, and Isola. Similarly, by realizing what Rhaskar had done to her parents and the reasoning behind it, allowed her open herself to the possibility that Azric could be more than the evil she had been thought he was and open herself heart to him.

Chapters 55 through Interlude 12 absolutely broke my heart! This section of the book was an emotional stand out for me, because we are not only getting background on Fiona’s past but also on the relationship between Azric and Echo not only before her death but right up to that point.

The way the last two chapters ended have me absolutely chomping at the bit for the next book! I really enjoyed the change to Azric’s POV in the last few chapters and hope the next book includes more of his perspective as well as Fiona’s.

Overall this is such a standout book, the romance is slow building but the yearning I think will be worth the wait. I will be thinking about Nyth, Fiona, and Azric for a long time.

I was so excited to read this book after seeing the author’s updates and how amazing the books sounded, but, unfortunately, it’s a DNF at 50% for me.

This book started really strong and I was immediately pulled into this incredible world the author created, the magic system was fascinating, especially that of the Priests', and must be one of the most unique I’ve ever read, I really enjoyed it. Fiona was a truly badass FMC, the kind I love in romantasy books, she was really strong and willing to fight for her place in the world and never gave up. I also enjoyed the other characters, they were all great and, from what I read, were starting to form an amazing found family.

Now the reasons why I decided to DNF. I don’t think this author’s writing style is for me, while it started strong there was so much info dump and it continued until the 50% at which I stopped, I like an intricate world building but there was too much information at once and then every time we learned something new or there was a new name mentioned we got many paragraphs explaining exactly who it is and their story or the events, what why when happened that gave us so much information every time I felt like it took me out of the moment and the story. Also, and this might me my mistake, I thought I could read it without reading this author’s previous series (I don’t know if I even knew it was a sequel series when I signed up for the ARC) but I felt like there was a lot of information I was missing and was supposed to know and I felt lost at times.

Overall, I think it’s a very interesting story with amazing characters and if you enjoy books with great world building, fascinating magic, deadly trials and slow burn romance I think it’s definitely worth giving it a try, unfortunately it wasn’t for me but I might give it a second chance in the future.

I thought I’d finish reading this book in app. 2/3 based on its length, but NO, I ate this book up in a day. Yes.. a day!

Thank you Evelyn Hart for an ARC of this book, thank you for the coloured map, the cover is stunning, the glossary which helped a ton and for writing a great Romantasy!

3.75/5 stars!

“They say there was peace, that humans lived without fear of anything other than the cruelness hidden in the hearts of men.”

“it is to give them life when death is all around them”.

To describe the FMC, she’s basically a Priestess who is “a small girl in a world full of men with a father who’s always been cold and distant”. She’s badass and says stuff like “my inexperience is a weakness and I refuse to allow any weakness to survive”.

Firstly, what I loved about this book:

- writing style overall had quite a fast pace and from the first chapter, were straight in on some action;

- the magic system is very unique (Marks and Infusions) which is new to me;

Secondly, what I didn’t like as much (these are based solely on my own opinions and are purely personal preferences):

- the pacing was slow at times, by that I mean that some chapters dragged out and felt repetitive in parts;

- there’s were A LOT of names/places/Gods and so on to remember so it was getting really difficult for me to enjoy the story in places, as it did confuse me more than any other Romantasy I’ve read (and some of those have been hard to get into too!) this was quite a big one for and what (for me) was the biggest let down as I felt the author needed to explain/expand or justify what some of the roles of the different Houses were for example, or what each infusion did and so on.

First, thank you for sending me an ARC!This is the first book I’ve read from this author. But the TikTok drew me in and it seemed right up my alley. Dragons? Shadow daddy? Yes please. I really loved meeting all these characters and the world they lived in. I didn’t realize that there was a “prequel” series before hand, but I will definitely be going to read those ASAP.

Things I like:
- Magic system- both how humans use it and how champions/godforged do; very unique
- Character development and growth seemed very well paced interesting
- Speaking of characters- love love love the FMC (Fiona), she brought so much and felt so central to everything without being a character that every other character just automatically fell in love with/became friends with; not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I felt it made her personal growth so much more interesting to read.
- Writing style- flows very well
- Character guide- very helpful and loved that the names weren’t hard to pronounce, no weird letters that looked one way but were meant to be read a different way (iykyk)

Things i didn’t like as much:
- While I loved the inclusion of a character guide, there are many names and places that I had to go back to the map and god guide to remember who was who; not annoying per say but at times just got to me
- The slow burn was slow but since this is only book one, I expect things to pick up in the next book

All in all, this was a 5 ⭐️ for me. It gave me everything I love to read in a romantasy and books in general. The writing, the plot, the characters, the everything all 5 ⭐️s. I cannot wait for the next book.

Shadow Trials by Evelyn Hart is different from anything I’ve read in dark fantasy.

What immediately stood out was the writing style. Each chapter is layered with cryptic quotes and fragments of dialogue that act like little Easter eggs, hinting at deeper truths within the story. Add in the interludes that reveal pieces of backstory, and you start to realize this world is hiding far more than it shows on the surface.

And the magic system? Unique, complex, and slowly unfolding in a way that keeps you curious. It’s one of those systems where the more you learn, the more questions you have. I must admit I enjoyed watching it all come together.

I will say that the pace is slow to start but so worth it if you stick with it.

The FMC starts off a bit naïve, but her drive to prove herself to her father makes her bold, determined…
AND sometimes dangerously reckless.

Watching her realize that her world isn’t what she believed was both heartbreaking and compelling, and her growth throughout the story kept me invested.

Then there’s the MMC who is equally driven, constantly challenging her, even while that tension between them builds. I must admit that to me he’s giving top tier shadow daddy energy. 🖤

SO, if you love:
✨ dark fantasy worlds with hidden layers
✨ driven, flawed characters
✨ tension-filled dynamics
✨ magic that slowly reveals its secrets

ARC Review

I was hooked from the first scene. I love it when the author knows how to pull you in and keep you wanting more and that is exactly what Evelyn Hart did. I read this entire book, and it’s a thick one, in a day. I could not put it down.
Fiona has been training her whole life for a position that they only give to men. She is strong and capable and a total bada$$, but nope, she’s a woman. When a chance of becoming something even greater comes along she jumps at it. She enters the Shadow Trials. Since she is human and all the other contestants are godforged or fae, she enters with Darian, whose sister is a Champion and needs one of them to win. She also encounters Azric Cyrus, the most brutal of the Champions, they become reluctant allies working toward a common goal. Enemies are all around and an even greater enemy is coming.
There were also interludes to give more background and backstory for the characters and insight into some other things. I enjoyed that very much. Most of the book is told by Fiona’s perspective, but the last few chapters switch to Azric, and I also thought that was a great way to end this book.
This book has everything my little heart loves. Magic, dragons, trials, found family, flawed main characters, hidden identity, he trains her, and a major slow burn that is still burning at the end of the book. I cannot wait for book 2!

Yeah… this one has officially claimed my top spot for the year so far. Shadow Trials completely pulled me in and refused to let go. It has that kind of grip where you sit down to read a few chapters and suddenly you’re way too deep to stop.
Fiona is exactly the kind of FMC I love, strong without being untouchable, determined, and carrying more weight than she lets on. Throw her into brutal trials tied to gods, power, and survival, and it’s nonstop tension from start to finish. There’s always something at stake, always something shifting, and it keeps you on edge in the best way.
And Azric… yeah, he understood the assignment. Dark, dangerous, and just enough mystery to make you question everything. The dynamic between them builds slowly, but it never feels dragged out. It’s controlled, intentional, and full of that underlying tension that makes every interaction hit harder than it should.
What really sealed it for me was how immersive it felt. The world, the magic, the dragons, the politics behind it all, it layers together in a way that makes you forget you’re reading. Even knowing this isn’t a complete HEA yet, I didn’t care. I was all in anyway.
This is one of those books that reminds you why you love romantasy in the first place. I’ll be thinking about this one for a while, and I already know I’m not done with this series.

This book didn’t just drag me into the arena… it pinned me there and whispered “survive me.”

If you love:
🖤 morally gray MMCs who feel like a bad decision you’d make twice
🔥 slow burn that hurts before it heats
⚔️ deadly trials + “touch her and die” energy
🌑 shadow magic that feels a little too intimate

…welcome to your new personality.

Fiona?? She’s not just surviving—she’s adapting, sharpening, unraveling in the most delicious way. Watching her stand toe-to-toe with something far more dangerous than monsters?? Addictive.

And AZRIC CYRUS…this man is a problem.

Cold hands, sharp edges, the kind of presence that presses too close and lingers too long. He doesn’t flirt—he studies, circles, claims space like it already belongs to him. Every moment between them feels like a breath held too long… like if one of them moves first, everything combusts.

And when the tension finally snaps??Yeah. You’re not recovering quickly.

The romance is a slow descent—less falling, more sliding willingly into ruin. Power, obsession, curiosity… it all tangles until you can’t tell what’s more dangerous: the trials or them.

💭 “She was meant to destroy monsters… but he’s the one teaching her how to crave the dark.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Read if you want tension so thick it feels like a touch… and a love story that bites

ARC Review: Shadow Trials by Evelyn Hart
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5 stars)
If you’re here for morally grey men, tension you could cut with a knife, and that addictive “I shouldn’t like him…but I do” energy — this one’s for you.
From the very first chapter, Shadow Trials pulls you into a dark, dangerous world where nothing is as it seems. The stakes are high, the twists keep coming, and the atmosphere? Thick with mystery and just the right amount of menace.
But let’s be honest…
we’re all here for HIM.
The shadow daddy vibes in this book are elite. Brooding, powerful, secretive — the kind of character who says very little but somehow says everything. Every interaction had me kicking my feet and questioning my life choices because WHY are the red flags so attractive? 🚩😩
The chemistry? Slow-burn perfection.
The tension? Absolutely criminal.
The emotional pull? Yeah… you’ll feel it.
Evelyn Hart has created characters that feel layered and real, especially the FMC who holds her own in a world that constantly tests her. Watching her navigate trust, danger, and temptation was such a strong part of the story.
Final thoughts:
Dark, addictive, and dangerously swoon-worthy. If you love a powerful, mysterious male lead with serious shadow energy… you need this on your TBR immediately.

Shadow Trials follows our FMC Fiona, an orphaned priestess who is thrown into a series of trials. In these trials, her survival isn’t guaranteed, and trust is a dangerous game.

The world-building and magic system were exactly what I had hoped for going into this book. Since this is the first installment, I expected a lot of the world-building, but it was done in a way that never lost me as a reader. The magic system felt really unique, with marks and infusions that instantly had me hooked. I also love books with trials and high stakes, and this one delivered. They added so much to the story and enhanced the world rather than slowing it down. The overall pacing was strong, but beginning was a bit slower for me. Once it picked up, I ended up finishing the book in one sitting.

I do also think it was helpful that there was a glossary and guide to the Gods, with their name pronunciations, which helps a lot with fantasy books! I enjoyed being able to refer to that when needed, because as we know, some names are HARD!

Overall, I’d give this ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I’d recommend it to readers who enjoy dark fantasy, competition-style plots, and of course, dragons!

DISCLAIMER THIS IS BASED OFF OF AN ARC COPY PROVIDED BY THE AUTHOR
Characters: 1.5/1.5🌟
Plot: 2/2🌟
Writing Style: 1.5/1.5🌟
My Thoughts: If you are after a well-written, banter-friendly, and mostly-plot building book, you've come to the write place. Unlike most romantasy books nowadays, Shadow Trials focuses on mainly the plot building up and characters developing rather than the romance portion of the book. Evelyn creates the world around you and makes sure you grow to love the characters individually before you love the primary couple. With essential zero explicit scenes, it's very easy to fall in love with the world of Nyth and it's characters. However, be warned, this book will play at your heartstrings. The closer you get to the characters, the more you'll find yourself sitting at the edge of your seat to see what happens next. Personally, I am a Darian girl, and let's just say that is not a path for the faint of heart. In the end, this book was written with such vivid details and scenes to the point I felt like I was fully witnessing everything. Overall, I can't wait for the final copy to be released and to see what Evelyn does next!

ARC Review – Shadow Trials by Evelyn Hart.

Shadow Trials completely swept me away. This was one of those books I picked up and simply could not put down—I devoured it.
Evelyn Hart has a way of pulling you deep into the emotional core of her characters. I didn’t just read their journey—I felt it. The angst, the tension, the vulnerability—it all came through so vividly that it made every moment hit harder. There were scenes that made me laugh out loud, others that genuinely brought tears to my eyes, and moments that left me frustrated in the best possible way.
The pacing and energy of the story kept me fully engaged from beginning to end. Every chapter felt purposeful, building on the last and driving the plot forward in a way that made it impossible to stop “just one more chapter.”
The storytelling was immersive, emotional, and incredibly well executed.
This book is a powerful reminder of how impactful great writing can be. Shadow Trials isn’t just a story—it’s an experience.
I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something that will pull them in and not let go.

Thank you to Evelyn Hart and the publisher for allowing me to read this advanced copy.

No spoilers

Tip
I'd recommend keeping a quick name and pronunciation guide handy while reading—it really helped me keep the momentum going through the denser parts of the story.

The Shadow Trials is dark in that quiet, consuming way—the kind that settles in slowly and doesn’t let go.

There’s a constant thread of tension running through it. Not loud or overwhelming, but steady… like everything is balanced on the edge of something about to shift. The challenges feel intentional, layered with strategy, where every move matters and nothing comes easy.

I really loved how identity was woven into the story. It’s subtle, but it shapes everything—who they are, who they’re becoming, and what they’re willing to risk to get there.

And the chemistry… definitely a slow burn. It builds softly, almost carefully, but there’s an undercurrent you can feel the whole time. It never rushes, which makes it all the more compelling.

It’s one of those reads that pulls you in without you realizing it at first—dark, tense, and quietly addictive.

What did I just read? This book OMG I am totally invested in the world if NYTH, it has so many eliments that are important it' like when you read an epic story like lord of the rings but with Dragons and Gods and Fae and Humans , and other demons and creatures and undead types of magical beings with a bit of a begining of some love sprinkled in . But the mutiple timelines, the prophecies, the magic, and all its history with an 80 year long war. Gods have their champions and they are bound to them to do their bidding . Most of the Gods and godforged are imortal and if they fall in battle are brought back to life. We meet Fiona who is Human and is Competing in trials to become godforged. The odds are stacked against her . These magical imortals are her conpetition and the journey ahe goes through , the found family and the things she has forgoten get reveiled through the competion . She has some powers but can't use them all or she could become even more of a target . She had also caught the attention of The Prince of Bones and He is the most dangerous godforged in the ranks . I highly recomend this book! I need book 2 asap!! there more to come .. im here for it.

✨ARC review✨

This was an amazing book with epic world building! I loved every minute of this and was hooked all the way though. I was immediately invested in the characters and couldn’t stop reading. The plot was complex but not confusing and there were so many layers to the story. There were lots of trials which I loved and it had an interesting magic system.

There was plenty of slow burn tension which was really well paced and I love Fiona & Azric’s characters - I can’t wait to see more of them! I loved the side characters and the friendships that developed, as well as the relationship with the dragons! There were some really good plot twists and it was action packed all the way through the story.

I really enjoyed the interludes within the story as it gave us a greater understanding of the gods and of Azric’s character. This world was really well crafted and there were so many layers to it. I’m really looking forward to learning more!

If you love epic world building, brutal trials, dragons & slow burn tension this book is definitely for you!

I loved the world of Nyth and I can’t wait to read more as the series continues!

I don’t even know how to start this except to say…WOW. I don’t know if I have ever loved a fantasy romance book this much.

This is the first book I’ve read by Evelyn Hart and I received it as an ARC. But, now that I’ve finished it, I need to read more of her series as I await the next book in the Shadow Trials.

Shadow Trials is intense but in a good way, I had moments where I had to drag my eyes back up the page because I wanted to see what was going to happen to Fiona and Azric and I couldn’t read fast enough. Shadow Trials is definitely a slow-burn and is one the lower edge of the spice scale but I am still dying to know what is going to happen next and to see if Fiona and Azric give into their feelings and finally let them take control. I really enjoyed that it wasn’t an insta-love with intense spice right away, it helped me get lost into the story and the world and the trials and tribulations that Fiona had to face being a human dealing with Gods and Goddesses, dragons and other magic beings.

ARC Review below

First of all (like always) a huge shout-out and a thank you to Evelyn Hart for allowing me to ARC Review this book! It was truly an amazing experience!

This book has it all. Broody, tortured MMC, heroine FMC that can save herself, deceitful Gods, and life-or-death trials. The magic system is a combination of the basic elements but also unique with introduction of Godforged and champions. We've got humans with stolen and magic and fae but not like our typical fae.

Ngl, I really thought about DNFing it. There is a LOT of world building, like almost to much. I spent the first 200 pages confused and trying to figure out what was happening and who is who with what magic and how they got that magic. But once I got it all sorted in my mind I couldn't put it down! The second half of the book was definitely a 6 star read but the massive info dump in the first half was a lot. But as with all fantasy, it tends to happen and it led up to an amazing ending and cliffhanger (of course).

4.5 stars but since Goodreads doesn't allow for half stars I'll give it a 5.

Shadow Trials by Evelyn Hart
🌟🌟🌟🌟.25 Stars
Releases April 14th, 2026

First thing first, I wasn't sure how I felt about this book for about the first 100 pages. Sounds like a huge commitment, but I PROMISE it does pay off! The last five chapters had me holding back tears and if anyone knows me, they KNOW I love a book that is emotionally damaging.

Shadow Trials follows the story of Fiona, our strong and resilient FMC who was basically orphaned and then was brought up by her "dad" who is part of the Priest, and that's how she was trained. The catch is, women cannot become a Priest. Fiona pretty much says "hold my beer, I can and I WILL".

The writing was natural, but the pacing was inconsistent at times. However, it seemed intentional to the plot, so I'll let it slide!

The only thing that took away from this book (for me) was the amount of names/gods to keep track of.

All I know is that ending has me ready for the next book!

I received the ARC for this book. This review does not contain spoilers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The world building was amazing, and it was pretty easy to follow once you started getting the gist of things in the first few chapters.

I also really enjoyed all the characters. Each one had depth and it was easy to see and understand their personalities.

There were a number of shocking twists to the plot that I didn’t quite see coming, and I think that’s also a part of artful storytelling.

I truly can’t believe the book is over. I expected to swipe to the next chapter! Guess I’ll have to wait for the next one to know what happens with the main characters. I do enjoy the parallels drawn throughout the book, too. So keep an eye out for those if you haven’t read the book yet!

The author creates some truly despicable characters, too, that you’ll learn to hate and other characters (not so despicable) that you’ll adore.

Enjoyed it, would continue reading the series!

The way this book came together deserves an award. It is so cleverly written, I was absolutely in awe. Between the epigraphs that are written in the past, present, and future AND interludes full of clever details… this book is not for someone who just wants a gushy romantasy story. It requires attention and I believe that makes it a phenomenal ride.

Within you will find main characters who have emotional and physical damage but are striving towards similar outcomes, intrusively meddlesome Gods, intelligent dragons and unique trials. The romance is REAL which I found to be refreshing, full of passionate desire and deep, dark wounds.

Like a hella confusing cliffhanger that leaves you in literally ~unknown~ territory? Yep. You get that too.

Grab this book. You will not be disappointed, especially if you like long series. Thank you so much to Evelyn for letting me Beta/ARC read this incredible book for you!

“Azric, the Prince of Bones, doesn’t move any more than a statue would. My protector. The cruelest man in the world. The man who inspires nightmares even amongst the Godforged.”
I am writing this review because I received an ARC. I absolutely loved this book. It started a little slow, but once I got into it I could hardly put it down. This is a slow burn, dark romantasy. Fiona has always wanted to become a “priest” like her adopted father. The only problem is women are not allowed in the order. As an act of rebellion she enters the Shadow Trials. She is the most not human amongst Gods, champions and supernatural creatures. She has also been foretold as the person to save Nyth from another threat.
There is a lot of back and forth banter, heartbreak, touched and die vibes. I was absolutely wrecked at the end of this book. The magic system and world is different from other books. I cannot wait for the next one. Be forewarned, it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger.
