Hometown Halftime by Jocelyn Jacobs
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)
I am absolutely, 1000% in love with Kinsey and Riley's age-gap, rugby coach × assistant coach romance. This is my first book by Jocelyn Jacobs and, honestly, I'm kind of mad her name isn't being shouted from the rooftops of sports romance. Her writing is a perfect blend of humorous dialogue and inner monologue, heartfelt emotional beats that had me tearing up and swooning, and enough heat to burn down a house.
I totally fell for Kinsey. Not only is she one of the best FMCs I've read this year, but she is up there on my best-ever list. She has such a multifaceted personality: part badass rugby coach, part feminine softie, and part ferocious kitten. She is an amazing coach who cares about teaching the girls so much more than just the rules of the game. She doesn't shy away from liking "girly" things or being soft with Riley and her BFFs. She's tough enough to handle most things on her own, but the people in her life love her so much they don't want her to have to. I melted every time she showed vulnerability with Riley, and I appreciate the care that was put into her journey with her chronic illness. Basically, I'm obsessed with Kinsey.
And Riley? He may only be 22, but he is a full-grown MAN. He has put his college football career on pause to pick up the adult responsibilities his loser father walked out on at home, not because he is expected to, but because that's the kind of man he is. He is a natural caregiver and nurturer, which means I was in full swoon every time he stepped onto the rugby pitch because, holy pajamas, he is an excellent coach. His pride in the team felt so special, especially when most guys his age wouldn't have taken the role seriously.
But what I love most about Riley is that he immediately clocks Kinsey as a force of nature, and even though she scares him a little, he admires it. He falls for her because she's strong and independent, not in spite of it, and that had me instantly head over heels for him.
I really love Kinsey and Riley together. The chemistry is palpable from their first meeting, and the natural banter that develops between them hooks me almost instantly. They play so well off each other. While the physical aspect of their relationship is a slow burn, the emotional development isn't. Riley becomes someone Kinsey can be vulnerable with without ever making her feel less capable, and she gives him someone who sees and appreciates the man he already is. They had me laughing and swooning in equal measure, and by the end, I was in tears.
This is the third book in the Hearts on the Sidelines series, but you can read it as a standalone. Though now that I know Jocelyn Jacobs is this good, I wish I had read the books in order. I know for a fact that I will be going back to read the others.
Thank you to the author and Luna Literary Management for providing an ARC.

Spice - 🌶️🌶️
Trope - age gap (she's older), black cat FMC × golden retriever MMC, sports romance, arthritis representation, roommates situation, forced proximity, head rugby coach × assistant coach, he reads, secret tattoo, workplace, small town, HEA
Thank you, Jocelyn, for providing me with the ARC. I really enjoyed Kinsey and Riley's story.
This was a sweet, spicy and beautiful story about two mature adults who understood each other.
Riley was so mature, calm, emotionally intelligent and understanding. The love and affection he showed his family and friends made me love him even more.
Kinsey was such a strong, black cat FMC. Her journey through chronic illness was both interesting and heartbreaking.
I loved that the chemistry between them was electric from the start, but it took time to develop into something more. I absolutely adored how these two prioritised communication, especially about their future and life together.
The family and friends moments were my favourite. Riley's sibling shenanigans were so much fun to read.
I love sports romances that explore the sports aspect to the fullest, and Jocelyn nailed it.
The spice was so well done; it never felt forced or too much.
I really enjoyed this story; however, I believe it could have benefited from a bit more development in a few aspects.
I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Absolutely loved Kinsey and Riley’s story!!! These two are so good together and Riley’s such a green flag. The perfect book boyfriend (Kinsey thinks that too!!!).
Loved the care and dedication put into Kinsey chronic illness story!
There’s not much spice but it’s really well written (Jocelyn is very good at it).
Now I need book 4…. 👀!

"I might be young, but don't confuse that with being a boy. I'm a man who knows exactly what he wants"
What a great, sweet book! I LOVE Riley, and I also LOVE Riley with Kinsey. If there was ever a couple I was rooting for to make it, Riley and Kinsey are it. I adore stories where the FMC is older than the MMC, and Hometown Halftime is a great one. Given that Riley is only 22 some attention is paid to the gap with Kinsey, but he's been written so well that he doesn't come across as very young at all. And as the quote above shows - just wait until you read the whole story - he wants Kinsey. And Kinsey wants him!
Kinsey works in a bar and is hired as a rugby coach for the new local high school team. The book doesn't take this lightly - we get proper descriptions of the trainings and games, which I really enjoyed. This isn't a case of a book in which the FMC needs a career, Jocelyn Jacobs knows what she's writing about and it shows.
Riley is taking a break from football to help his family. He's following classes remotely. He's mature, smart, patient and understanding. We don't see much of Riley's football career (including how he manages to stay fit and focused on football while away from university?) or time at university when he does return, so while his character is clear, we don't see much of his life outside of his developing relationship with Kinsey, coaching the rugby team, his two best friends and the time he spends with his family. That's not to say that you don't know what he gets up to when he's not with Kinsey, it's just that you don't really get those details. I missed them a bit but also enjoyed the story enough without them.
One things we do get, in spades, is yearning. I loved it! The story is written so well from both MCs POVs (although I might secretly have looked forward to reading Riley a smidge more than Kinsey) that I was actively hoping they'd get together, and when they did, that they'd stay together. Riley falls first but it's a close race... and watching him watch and want Kinsey is, well, hot! Speaking of hot, the spice is good in this book - and well done. There's a proper build-up to it over time, which I adored.
The book deals with early-onset arthritis in a sensitive and detailed way. It also deals a little with parental divorce as an adult, which I feel was done nicely. It also shows the difficulties that two people with different lives (and in different stages of life) can run into. I was so happy when Riley didn't give up his plans and yet he and Kinsey found a way to be together! All in all I recommend this book to all who like sweet love stories set in a sports world with MCs who know how to communicate.

Well damn. Riley Weston may only be twenty-two, but that man is a full-grown MAN, and I absolutely loved him.
I really enjoyed the reverse age gap in Hometown Halftime. Riley carries himself with a maturity that makes it easy to forget how young he is. He’s attentive without being overbearing, a natural caregiver, and has that golden-retriever energy I adore while also being the steady presence his family needs. And Riley asking Kinsey to “make him a man”? The combination of playful and sinful worked VERY well for me. Throw in the slutty black glasses and backwards hat, and Kinsey really never stood a chance.
But Kinsey? I’m obsessed with her. She’s easily one of my favorite FMCs I’ve read this year. She’s a badass rugby coach who is strong, independent, sarcastic, feminine, soft, and vulnerable all at once. I especially appreciated the care given to her arthritis and the way her chronic illness is part of her life without becoming her entire identity.
I also loved how much actual rugby we get! Kinsey genuinely cares about her players and about teaching these girls more than just the game, and Riley stepping in beside her as assistant coach made me love him even more. His pride in those girls was so freaking sweet.
Kinsey and Riley just WORK together. The chemistry and banter are there immediately, but there’s also so much yearning as their relationship develops. Riley falls first, Kinsey isn't far behind, and I loved watching them become a safe place for each other. He admires her strength rather than being intimidated by it, and she sees and appreciates the man he already is instead of reducing him to his age.
I also appreciated that Riley never had to give up his football dreams for their relationship to work. Their age difference means they're genuinely in different stages of life, and figuring out how to choose each other without sacrificing their individual futures made their relationship feel that much more satisfying.
I loved Kinsey, I loved Riley, and I especially loved them together. This was such a fun, sweet, sexy sports romance, and the yearning between these two made it even better.

Thank you Jocelyn Jacobs for the early copy.
Kinsey and Riley's story was so beautiful to follow. Riley is going through a difficult moment in his life, with his dad having left and his mom needing help with his younger siblings. He needs a job while he's temporarily back in his hometown, so he accepts the position of assistant coach in the newly instated girls rugby team. The coach is Kinsey, and sparks fly right when they meet. Getting involved with each other would be really complicated, especially because whatever relationship they forge has an end date.
I loved how the age gap between them wasn't really an issue for them. Sure, Kinsey worried about it, but not enough to fight the chemistry they had. Riley was very mature for a 22-year-old and a natural caretaker, which clashed directly with Kinsey's need to rely only on herself, and I really enjoyed seeing her walls come down. The way their relationship blossomed was really well done, with them interacting first as coworkers, then as friends, and finally as lovers. Riley's virginity is front and center but not in an awkward way, there's no pressure or roasting by his friends, and when he tells Kinsey, she treats it as the delicate information it is instead of being weird about it. Riley's vulnerability in that scene was one of my favorite moments.
I only wish we'd found out more about Kinsey's past and that we'd seen more of Riley's family. But the whole Cedar Falls gang hanging out together made up for it.
Another sweet, wholesome, spicy book by Jacobs, one that I recommend with my whole heart if you love small town, sports romance.

Early Access ARC Review
I’m writing this review literally seconds after finishing the book. I’m a crying mess trying to hold myself together!!! What a beautiful book it was perfect!!!
Kinsey my lovely Kitten, the woman you are!! Accepting the Rugby coach position, showing those girls that they deserve to play giving them the confidence they needed. The strength you showed by going to the doctors by accepting the help because clearly something was not right, you are soooo brave and strong!!!
Riley my sweetheart with slutty glasses, talk about being the most selfless man ever!! Being assistant coach, pushing right along with Kinsey to get these girls out there and accomplishing their dream to play Rugby. To falling in love with your perfect girl!!!
I’m so emotional with this book it has absolutely everything!!! The writing was perfect, the way they fall in love so naturally it wasn’t forced it was absolutely perfect!!! Also I don’t want to spoil it much but Riley being a virgin him confessing it to Kinsey and the conversation they had about it, I truly appreciated it because we are so used to it always being the girl who isn’t experienced and to see the other side to it was magical. Also I truly appreciated that the writing was sooo natural and realistic.
Easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

-Coach FMC x Assistant Coach MMC
-Rugby Romance
-Forced Proximity
-Spicy Lessons
-Reverse Age Gap
Riley moved back home to try to help his mother out and help care for his younger siblings. Kinsley is navigating her life is struggling with whether or not she should be the new head coach of the woman’s rugby team. They have no idea that deciding to coach together is going to change everything. I absolutely loved the friendship that was build in this book. But most of all I absolutely ate up the Banter !
Riley is on track to become a professional football player when everything starts to shift. His dad walks out on his family. Riley is now left to pick up the pieces and help his mom. Riley is such an amazing, talented man who is full of so much love. He is a natural caretaker and he would never allow a loved one to suffer even if it’s at the stake of his own future.
Kinsley is fierce, loyal, and stubborn. She is extremely independent and refuses to lean on anyone. She loves her friend group so much and has such an amazing support system. But she will not accept help, she is always “fine”. But maybe life is getting rough and maybe she isn’t so fine. Kinsley slowly starts to realize that yes she can do everything on her own but maybe she doesn’t want to anymore.

I could not put this book down! Kinsey and Riley were perfect together.
Riley is back home to help his mom with his younger siblings after his dad walked out on his family and ends up the assistant coach to the new rugby team at the high school where he (re) meets Kinsley, the local bartender. The chemistry's there from the beginning, but Kinsey ignores it mostly because she's seven years older than him. Just when she's about to give in to a date, her apartment floods and she finds herself his roommate. Things develop from there naturally, and Kinsey is more than happy to help him explore more when he admits to being a virgin. But there's a time limit to their relationship as he's set to go back to school come the new year.
Kinsey and Riley get their happy ending in this standalone book in a series.
I wasn't sure going into this book if I'd like it as I generally don't care for reverse aga-gap romances but these two were fantastic together! I loved how independent Kinsey came across but how willing she was to let Riley care for her but also made sure that Riley felt appreciated for what he was doing. The new team they were coaching seemed like so much fun, and the girls had such a great attitude through it all. I do have to wonder who they got to coach after both of them left, as I couldn't see the girls giving up after how much fun they were having.
I received an advance review copy from The Smuthood Promo, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Kinsey and Riley’s story was one of the sweetest ever! Straight tears at the end with how happy it made me!
Riley Weston comes back to his hometown, Cedar Falls, to help his family during a difficult time. He puts his dreams of playing football on hold for just a few months, but also needs to make some money while he’s home. An assistant coaching position for the Cedar Falls High girls Rugby team falls in his lap. It was perfect timing and he’ll be alongside Kinsey Malone, the towns bartender, and now, head coach.
Kinsey is a feisty little one, but really warms up to Riley and his handsome self pretty fast. She also really enjoys coaching these high school girls, especially with him by her side.
Kinsey has problems throughout the book with her sciatic/hips area, and pain that radiates down her legs. She ends up being diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, and the way Riley supports and cares for her is the sweeeeeeetest! This man is literally perfect and I can’t wait for everyone to read their love story.
Does Riley stick to his dreams? And can Kinsey and Riley make their relationship work?

And can Kinsey and Riley make their relationship work?

love it. I got an arc. This is Kinsey, and Riley's story. They are soooo cute together! This is an reverse age gap, youth rugby coach x assistant rugby coach romance. Despite Riley's age he's definetely more mature then other 22 year olds. That probably has to do with him basically help raise his siblings even before his dad left. They meet when Riley, and Kinsey become coaches of the local girls high school rugby team. I love how they work together to be such good role models for the girls. Riley's only there temporarily to help out his family. He is able to help her out when her apartment floods, but that is the start of there relationship clearly. They fall hard, it is clear but its hard when the time comes for them both to move on. One thing I really liked was the Arthritis rep. It was really sweet to see how much Riley cared about this. I also love that the plan on not having kids. Riley has a lotttt of green flags cannot go wrong with that. Kinsey is a tough shell to crack, but once you get under her skin she's such a great character. There is def some spice, but not a ton but its perfect. Its perfect theres an HEA ofc. I loved it. Read it in 2 days.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. ARCs are the best way to find new others. Hometown Halftime captured my attention and then my heart. Kinsey works at a bar in her hometown and, as a former rugby player, is harassed by her friend’s husband until she agrees to coach the brand new girls rugby team at the high school. Riley is a promising quarterback who is back in town his senior year of college due to a family emergency and is encouraged by his high school coach to take the assistant coach position for rugby team. What ensues starts with a lot of accidental dick fondling that had be laughing out loud and rolls right into mutual attraction neither can resist. This is a reverse age gap, accidentally living together book with a virgin MMC. What starts as a pact to deflower him with a solid end date quickly evolves into something more. Also, gotta love a man not afraid of emotions and Riley delivers. He also has slutty little glasses, so add all that together and this is a must read.

This one was super cute. I’ve loved this whole series. This one was no different.
Riley and Kinsey were so fun. I loved how they met and the banter that they had from the very beginning.
Kinsey is the spitfire in town. She’s got a unique personality and used to play rugby herself. When she’s recruited to coach the girls high school team she’s nervous but excited.
Riley is home helping with some family things. Doing school online and trying to stay on top of everything. He’s the assist coach to earn some money and give back to his community as well.
These two have so much fun while they are together. As coaches then as friends than as more. I loved getting to watch this relationship blossom. I also loved the arthritis rep. You can tell time and effort was put in to make this a real rep not just something thrown into the story. It wasn’t front and center but it had its place and I loved that.

Ok I’m a declared #1 fan of Kinsey and Riley!
I don’t read each gap stories when she’s the oldest in the relationship so often, with that being said, I feel to say here it works out perfectly for them, like they really make sense together… their personalities, wishes, the life plan just click together and of course it takes a little of adjusting here and there because yes life is hard ( and I love the book doesn’t try to ignore that and make it just magically work out).
That being said I love the representation in this book in many senses, like with a high school girls team of a not so common sport in romance books and also Kinseys health and your life can change so much in a blink of an eye.
And to finish my rambling, the family representation it’s real and heartwarming, and I’m talking both the friends that showed up in Kinsey’s life with no question about it and Riley’s fierce loyalty and love for his siblings that he leave everything behind to be present for them.

Oh how I loved this one. Riley was the perfect book boyfriend and Kinsey was the grey kitten to his golden retriever.
Always love getting glimpses of past characters and of course the Facebook posts 🤣
I can tell that this book was sentimental for Jocelyn to write even without her note to readers before the book began. Kinsey in this story suffers from arthritis and we followed her on her journey and struggles to find a diagnosis. You can tell that her suffering and pain seemed so real that it must have been exactly how Jocelyn felt.
Jocelyn never fails to put me in my feels while reading her books. I got emotional during so many parts. Very excited to read about a certain coffee shop owner’s holiday romance book. I’m sure I will laugh and cry all over again.
Thank you so much for sending me this ARC, Jocelyn and I cannot wait to read what you have in store next.

Hometown Halftime by Jocelyn Jacobs
Hearts on the Sidelines book 3
This reverse age gap is my absolute favourite. Kinsley and Rylie were just so perfect together.
Riley moves back home to take care of his family after his father leaves. He puts off his final semester of school and that means he has to put off football as well. Needless to say he’s a bit out of sorts. When he gets an opportunity to help Kinsley coach a high school girls rugby team he’s a bit hesitant but he accepts it.
Kinsley is the definition of a black cat. Her journey with her health and diagnosis gutted me. But what a baddie she is!
Riley becomes her steady and calm. I just love them together and the chemistry is just electric from the beginning.
What a journey they go on to get their HEA🖤🥰

I smiled so hard thru this entire book (except the one part where I sobbed big tears) my cheeks hurt
Kinsley was such a fabulously strong bad ass fmc but dear sweet Riley absolutely stole my heart. The way that man loved everyone in his orbit was so heart warmingly beautiful
The chemistry between these two was 🥵 from the moment they met and their banter was such fun to read, the spice was well done and never distracted from the beautiful small town romance
Thank you Jocelyn and Luna Literary for the ARC opportunity 💕 I can't wait for book 4

Oh yes! This is the third installment of the series, and I am completely OBSESSED!
She has been invited to coach the high school girls' rugby team, while he goes back to his hometown to help his family. (I really wish we had more insight into his dad.)
I love the bond they've developed and how effectively they collaborate as coaches for the team. I also admire the way he looks after her.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series, especially the story of Lee and Tyler!
Thank you for this amazing opportunity to read the eARC, and I am happy to provide my honest review in return.

Kinsey and Riley are both hired to coach the new girls’ rugby team in town. They are attracted to each other from the start, despite Kinsey being a few years older than Riley. Aside from that, things are just easy and comfortable between each other. Once they kiss, though, it doesn’t take long for things to grow more serious. Spicy and sweet, but they eventually hit a crossroads because Riley was only ever going to be back in town for a few months to help his family. In their case, absence definitely does make the heart grow fonder. Loved it!!!

The perfect book for me to cosy up with, an easy contemporary romance that gave me all the feels.
It’s refreshing to see such a genuine storyline that covers the nuances of age-gaps and long-term health conditions. I never felt like the story was rushed or too slow either.
Also loved the rugby storyline, as someone who played rugby it was so nice to see girls rugby centre stage with details of the actual games!

Riley is young but he’s definitely not a boy. He is one amazing young man! He’s the ultimate book boyfriend who cares for you when you are unwell, a man who can cook well and someone who has a good heart…
This book brought me through a rollercoaster of emotions, as I swooned along with Kinsey, cried together with her, and felt how safe she was in Riley’s arms.

Ok Riley and Kinsey, I really enjoyed these two. Riley is a walking green flag and so genuine. The two together were great! If you enjoy an age gap where she’s older, workplace romance, small town, and nicknames you will enjoy this book!
How doesn’t love a nosey town meddler, Ms. Haddie had me chuckling per usual!
Thank you Jocelyn Jacobs for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was such a sweet book. Seeing the way these two came together and their friendship grow into love. Plus the way he supported her thru her diagnosis and helped her with her shots was so sweet.
