Venom Curse #1

The Venom in Her Veins

Rate this book
When the first kingdom of Selvarra fell, the ripple that followed reshaped fate itself—awakening something darker.
Despite not knowing her origin, Verena has always been a dreamer, determined to reunite the fractured realms before the world tears itself apart. But fate has other designs. Branded with the mark of The Viper, the ancient curse destined to unravel everything it touches, Verena must face the truth: she was born to destroy the very kingdoms she longs to save. The corruption consuming her veins is growing seductive, becoming impossible to resist. And with every passing breath, she is becoming the nightmare the world already whispers her to be.
Yet deep within the darkness, something else stirs—something older, unbreakable, and defiant of even fate.

Across the realms, Ronan D’Vyre, heir to the dragon kingdom of Ryuu, carries the weight of a crown forged in fire and chains. The dark kingdom has crumbled, and the plague devouring what remains threatens to consume them all. Freedom is the only thing Ronan has ever craved, and he will sacrifice anything to claim it—until his path collides with Verena’s.

To protect his kingdom, he must kill her.
To save her world , she must trust him.

EPIC. 5⭐️ is NOT ENOUGH for this incredible book. Jessica, even if you turn this into a 7-book series, I would inhale every single one without hesitation.

I’m momentarily wrecked. I need time to process everything. Finishing this book might actually require a small holiday. Full review to come.

Jessica truly has a way with words. This was written so well, and the dialogues are unlike any other. They feel like lines you’d want to hear straight from a movie

I took my time with this book.. really savored it. First, because her writing is just so beautiful. Second, because every line holds little pieces you don’t want to miss.. pieces that build up to the events you know are coming. And yet, even taking it slow, it feels like there are still so many secrets I haven’t fully deciphered. That just makes me want to read it all over again. Somehow, I have a feeling the second read will be even sweeter.

I love it when a book takes its time to introduce the magic system and build its world at the right pace. It develops a strong foundation that lets the story sink deeper into your mind. That’s exactly how it was delivered in this book. This world is so vivid that it imprints itself deep in your mind and refuses to let go even after the last page.

Halfway through, the characters are already so well developed that I feel deeply connected to and invested in, each of the significant ones. There are also so many side characters I’ve come to love, each carrying a distinct personality. Some mysterious, some hilarious, some stubborn, some full of secrets.. and some will make your blood boil.

And VERENA. I’ve found a new favorite FMC — she’s like a blend of Diana and Celaena, carrying all their female rage. The MMC is just as captivating. You really have to meet RONAN, the smoking-hot Dragon Prince.

And those lines.. especially after that major turn. I’ve never highlighted this many lines in a book before. I’m dying to post them all here.. holding back is honestly crushing my soul.💔 They’re just too beautiful, too swoon-worthy not toshare with the world. And all those quotes that make your mind throw a standing ovation.. they all deserve to be framed and hung on the walls. But I don’t want to spoil anything. I want you all to experience it for yourselves and feel your hearts melt the way mine did reading those lines. So please, my lovely romantasy book besties, pick up this book and see for yourselves.

Thank you to the author for this ARC.

I was able to beta read this wonderful story. And OMG! It was the perfect dark fantasy romance. I loved Verena, our FMC, I loved how naturally strong she was and it was a nice change to see an FMC who was already trained and able to kick ass. I loved our broody dragon shifter MMC, Ronan, he was literal perfection. And the banter between these two was *chefs kiss*. The pacing of the story was very well done—I constantly wanted to know more and what was gonna happen. This book is going to make you GO THROUGH it in all the emotions and it’s so so worth it. The depth of this story is insane and a book that you could reread multiple times and still find more Easter eggs. You will experience the highest highs and lowest lows so bring tissues. And the ending? 💔 book 1 isn’t out yet and I’m already needing book 2!
We got: slow burn, enemies to lovers, feminine rage, who did this to you, dragon shifters, witches, political intrigue, spice, other mythical creatures/monsters, found family, & secrets/betrayals.
All my dark fantasy peeps you’re gonna want to pick this up, you won’t be disappointed!

I sometimes struggle to read fantasy books as an avid romance reader, however I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book to read.

This book had me SAT, through my kids being sick, I needed to know how it was going to play out and where the characters would go, and become. The author put so much incredible vocabulary in this book, that you could genuinely make a
movie in your mind, and see what the characters were seeing.

I loved the FMC, a strong and stable character. I loved the MMC, a true book boyfriend 🤤 (need I say more). I loved the plot twists. I loved the character development. I LOVED the romance 😈.

I can't wait to see where this series goes.

I finished the book and… the book finished me. Thank you to J.E. Caroline for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of her debut novel.

In short, this was a unique story, with a very strong FMC and a broody dragon shifter as well as a FANTASTIC world and twisting plot.

In more detail…

As in some fantasy books I‘ve read recently I was quite lost at the beginning. There are a lot of characters in different places within Selvarra. I was trying to figure out what all the different threads were within the plot.

BUT when the threads started coming together a MAGICAL world with so many opportunities opened up. It felt like it had been built with love and a lot of thought.

I really liked the FMC because Verena is not intimidated by anyone, not even by a broody dragon shifter. Her character ARC was not a straight one which made it so much more interesting. I‘m already looking forward to her development in the next book. And I just loved Ford - a fun side character.

At the end we need to talk about the ENDING aka the last 100 pages. Well, they just blew my mind - the feelings, the emotional damage, the twisting plot. I loved it!

This book had my jaw on the floor. I cannot believe this is from a debut author. I screamed, I cried, I kicked my feet, I was emotionally damaged and I am BEYOND obsessed. It gave me everything I want in a romantasy; high stakes, world building, a blood bond (LITERALLY MY FAVORITE), a "who did this to you" moment, chapters that gave me ACOTAR Chapter 54 vibes, a side character that rivals Carrion Swift and Ridoc, a TRUE enemies to lovers (they are destined to kill eachother ok!) and a romance worth SWOONING and kicking your feet over. Verena and Ronan are fierce, she is a STABBY FMC and he is a dragon shifter destined to kill her. Their meet cute where she tries to kill him? Ok I am HOOKED. The world building was so intricate, and RYUU is the equivelent of the Night Court. I am DYING for book 2. The spice? IMMACULATE. I was FANNING myself. Read this book IMMEDIATELY, don't walk, run. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. This is going to live rent free in my head forever.

I have too many annotated quotes.... BUT some favorite quotes:
If you refer to her as an object again, I will show you exactly what ruin looks like.

My eyes widened. "Did you just ... mark me?"

His kiss was fire and smoke, and gods I wanted to burn in it.

"I don't have to claim you to know you're mine," he whispered. "But know, I have always been yours in return."

So, she had chosen violence. Noted.

Gods, there's my ruin.

"We're going to a place that has never failed me. Not once. Not even when destiny demanded I kneel." Oh good, a soul-healing secret haven.

"You don't even know what you do to me," he whispered. "I'd burn kingdoms for this. For you. Do you understand?"

"We'll always find our way back to each other. Even in the dark. Even when all that's left is everything we couldn't remember."

"The best thing I could ever be," I said, voice shaking, "is your mate."

No notes, I’d give this all the stars if I could 💫

First off, I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of The Venom in Her Veins last minute so thank you to the author for including me!

This is her debut novel and honestly it reads like a seasoned writer. Her writing is captivating and immediately draws you in the story. The world building is immaculate, the characters are complex, and the secrets that unfold are jaw dropping.

The FMC Verena definitely gives me Dianna from the Book of Azrael vibes with feminine rage and being a badass. Think Dianna pre Kaden betrayal and the post Kaden betrayal cause we get both versions of Verena in this book.
Our MMC Ronan is broody and dark and has layers that get peeled back in the best way.
Their connection gnaws at you and all you want to do is root for them the have their HEA. THE YEARNINGGG OMG

The story is so complex that it’s hard not to get sucked into, I literally didn’t stop reading for almost a day straight cause I just HAD to know what happened next. The last 15% of the story blew my mind, and I expected there to be plot twists but I literally expected NONE of the ones that were revealed and now I’m left reeling for the next book. Also, may have wanted to chuck my kindle multiple times 😅

Honestly this is perfect for people who loved A Book of Azrael. AND I have a feeling this could be the next best romantasy god-tier series going forward.

So I guess when I said no notes, I meant A LOT of notes and I’m not sorry about that 😏

1.5 stars! My friend was an arc reader for this book and told me I couldn't post this until release day. so here we go. I do not understand why there are mostly 4 and 5 stars.

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did, which makes writing this a bit frustrating. There are definitely some good ideas here, but they get buried under uneven execution and a lack of focus.

One of the biggest issues is the pacing. The story drags in places where it should move quickly, then rushes through moments that feel like they deserved more attention. It creates this stop-and-go rhythm that made it hard to stay fully engaged. the beginning was where I struggled the most and wanted to DNF multiple times. I found myself losing interest during long stretches that didn’t seem to add much to the overall plot.

The characters also feel underdeveloped. While a few of them have interesting traits or backstories, they aren’t explored deeply enough to feel real. Their decisions sometimes come across as forced or convenient, rather than natural outcomes of their personalities. Because of that, it’s difficult to feel invested in what happens to them.

That said, the book isn’t without merit. There are moments where the writing shines—particularly in certain descriptions and a few key scenes that actually land emotionally. The core concept of the story is also intriguing, and with tighter editing and more consistent character development, it could have been much stronger.

Overall, this isn’t a terrible book, but it’s also not one I’d go out of my way to recommend. It feels like a draft that needed more refinement before being published. If you’re really interested in the premise, it might still be worth a read, but just don’t go in expecting something polished.

Thank you to the author for the ARC.

The Venom in Her Veins has a compelling premise and a story that really finds its footing as it progresses. While the first portion of the book required some patience, I became much more invested in the second half and was eager to see how the twists, character dynamics, and larger conflict would unfold.

The male main character is introduced with a fairly dark goal, which immediately sets up tension between him and the female main character. Their dynamic evolves throughout the story, and that tension became one of the elements that kept me reading.

Where I struggled most was with the worldbuilding. Early on, there were several moments where lore, history, or magical elements were mentioned without enough explanation for me to fully grasp how they worked within the world. Each character is connected to a different kingdom and through that a type of magic, but much of that background is referenced in ways that felt like the reader was expected to already understand the context.

Because of this, I spent a good portion of the first half trying to piece together how certain elements fit together, including the connection between Verena and the viper, and how the broader magical dynamics between kingdoms function. Some pieces became clearer later in the story, but I still felt like there were gaps by the end.

That said, the plot itself has a lot of potential. There are strong twists, compelling character tensions, and a larger conflict that clearly has room to grow. The story left me curious about what happens next and how the world will continue to unfold in future books.

Since this was an ARC, I also want to note that there were some grammatical and sentence structure issues that occasionally disrupted the reading flow. These may very well be addressed before the final release, but in this version they were noticeable enough that I sometimes had to mentally restructure sentences to follow the meaning.

Overall, the story has a lot of promise. With some clearer grounding in the worldbuilding earlier in the book and a polished final edit, this could easily become a strong installment in the genre.

Rating: 3.5 stars as an ARC.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

First, thank you so much to the author for the ARC copy of The Venom in Her Veins. It was such a privilege to step into this world early. What an incredible ride.

From the very first chapters, I was completely pulled in. Verena is the kind of heroine I absolutely love. She is powerful, conflicted, and walking the razor’s edge between destiny and destruction. The tension of her curse, the corruption in her veins, and the constant question of whether she will save the world or destroy it made every chapter impossible to put down.

And Ronan. I adored him. The heir to a dragon kingdom forced into impossible choices, carrying the weight of a broken realm. His dynamic with Verena was layered, emotional, and so compelling. Their paths collide knowing he may have to kill her to save his kingdom. The angst was absolutely perfect.

The worldbuilding was incredible. Elemental power, dragons, witches, ancient curses. Every realm felt distinct and alive. It gave me the sweeping epic feel of Fourth Wing mixed with the depth and intensity of Throne of Glass, while still feeling completely original. The fantasy elements were rich without being overwhelming, and the stakes just kept climbing.

The plot twists, the tension, the emotional beats. Everything landed. I was hooked the entire time.

I cannot wait for book two. This series has so much potential and I am fully invested.

If you love:
• morally gray characters
• dragon kingdoms
• elemental magic
• high stakes fantasy romance
• destiny versus choice tension

You need this book.

Absolutely a 5 star read for me.

I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to be a beta reader for this incredible book!

I am not used to reading fantasy books with such intricate world building. I definitely tend to read more "beginner friendly" fantasy. So it was a bit tough to read at times. BUT this book was phenomenal.

The characters, the world, the magic system, the story, the romance. It was all so well written and so beautiful and tragic and everything in between. It was unlike anything I have read before.

Verena and Ronan are two forces to be reckoned with. They are TRUE enemies to lovers.

I just finished and I already can't wait for book 2!

First of all, a huge thank you to Jessica for the ARC copy of The Venom in Her Veins 🖤

I really took my time with this one. As a fast reader, the fact that this chunky 750-page fantasy took me almost a week to finish says a lot 👀

The world-building is incredibly immersive and detailed, and it definitely takes up a large portion of the first half of the book. It took me a little while to fully settle into the story, but once I passed the halfway mark… I genuinely could not put it down.

The enemies-to-lovers? Chef’s kiss 🤌
The slow burn? So well executed.

This book is packed with secrets, prophecies, political tension, and twists that slowly start clicking into place. I know a lot of readers are going to scream over that cliffhanger ending, but honestly… if you pay close attention to the prophecies and breadcrumbs throughout the story, the clues are there 👀

And now I genuinely have NO idea where Jessica is going to take book two. But I will absolutely be seated for it.

Also, can we talk about Ford for a second???
Best side character award officially goes to him 😭 I love that man and I cannot WAIT to see where his character arc goes next.

✧ what to expect ✧

➳ enemies to lovers
➳ slow burn
➳ found family
➳ fae
➳ “who did this to you?” MMC
➳ feminine rage
➳ stubborn FMC
➳ banter & tension
➳ prophecies and secrets

Some quotes that completely destroyed me:

“He would tear apart every sky that dared to cover her, would unmake every throne, every realm, until the world was forced to its knees if that’s what it took to bring her back to him.”

“He didn’t remember selling his soul—but it would belong to her in every lifetime.”

“Why should a king rule,” I said, baring my fangs, “when divinity wears a woman’s face.”

“If you’re lost to the darkness, I’ll find you. Every time, in every life, my soulflame.”

Review of Advanced Reader copy book given by author.

⭐️ rating=3.5/5
🌶️rating=2(a couple of scenes with mild descriptions)
Characters=4/5
Plot/story line=3

I appreciate the author giving me the ability to read this book early and review.

Positives:
I loved the feminine rage in this book, that the MMC fell first, and I loved the plot twists and story line that developed in the 2nd half of the book. I love the Harry Potter story inspirations sprinkled throughout. I love Verena character. I loved some of the really great female empowering lines. I even tagged my favorites.

Negatives:
I didn’t understand most of what was going on and who I was learning about in the 1st half of the book so it made it really difficult to stay engaged in the story. I felt like I was already supposed to know who all the characters and history/story line of this world without getting much context or back story. I kept having to search the side characters names because I couldn’t remember when I was introduced or why they were relevant in the story. I felt like I was already supposed to know everyone’s abilities and connections but missed chapters where those were addressed early on. I don’t really understand the point of some characters, especially Elva. She felt like she had no personality or usefulness throughout the book but everyone just blindly felt like they had to always protect her. I was also really hoping for a why choose romance for this book but I felt like I was just teased with this possibility multiple times throughout the 2nd half of the book.

Takeaways:
Overall it was a good book and I would plan to read the 2nd in the series because I want to see Verena in her “villain era”. And dragon boy has some serious groveling to do that I look forward to reading. I really hope this groveling absolutely includes in the bedroom 😏. And maybe I’ll get lucky and get my why choose romance after all 🤞

I got this as an ARC and WOW-

I went into Venom in Her Veins not knowing what to expect—and honestly? It took me a minute to settle in. The beginning had me a little unsure, like where is this going and how is it all going to come together? But stick with it, because that slower build is doing serious work.

Once it clicks… it CLICKS.

The story takes off at full speed and does not let up. The tension? Unreal. The yearning? Practically vibrating off the pages. I was fully locked in, flipping pages like my life depended on it, whispering “what is happening?!” every five seconds. It gets so intense, so twisty, so action-packed that my brain genuinely couldn’t keep up—in the best way.

And the FMC? Pure, unfiltered feminine rage. Powerful, emotional, and heavy in a way that makes every moment hit harder. You feel everything she feels.

The dynamic?? Top tier. If you love that sharp, biting, I-hate-you-but-I-can’t-ignore-you tension with a whole lot of longing layered in… yeah, this delivers. And the MMC? Let’s just say: shadow dragon energy and leave it at that.

By the end, I was just… staring at a wall. Processing. Spiraling. Needing answers immediately. That finale hit like a truck and now I’m over here impatiently waiting for book two like it’s a personal emergency.

Read this if you want:

✨ intense tension & yearning

✨ enemies-to-lovers vibes

✨ high-stakes chaos

✨ nonstop twists

✨ a story that will absolutely mess with your head

Because this one? It builds, it explodes, and it leaves you reeling.

This was an amazing debut and hands down 5 + ⭐️ read for me

The character development between the 2 main characters chefs kiss! Enemies to lovers chefs kiss! Banter loved it! World building done just right.

What a ride this book was! All the twists and turns this story took blew my mind. You’ll never see it coming!

Everyone needs to add this to your TBR immediately!

Thank you J. E. Caroline for choosing me to read and review an ARC of your amazing debut

wow what a debut, i absolutely loved this - the amount of kindle highlights are insane.

it gave me everything i want in a dark fantasy romance - captivating world, unique magic, high stakes, a stabby FMC, a broody MMC (extra points because he has wings😏), an incredible found family and TONS of feminine rage.

i absolutely loved our FMC Verena, shes stabby, fierce, quick-wittedc, fuelled with feminine rage - basically just a baddie. then you ronan… A MANNNN. ugh he is dark and broody and absolutely delicious - dragon shifter who wields shadows (just my type). THE TENSION?!? THE YEARNING?!? STOP IT! i was foaming at the mouth, the fact that Verena is trying to kill him for like 70% of the book had me on the edge of my seat.

the ending?!?! - the twists, secrets revealed had me gasping.

book one isn’t even out yet but i need book two.

thank you so much j.e caroline for the arc copy.

4.75 ⭐️ - thank you to the author JE Caroline for a last minute ARC 🫶🏼
I received the pre edit version ARC copy so that is my reasoning for 4.75 stars - otherwise its a 5 star read ! I am sure when i get my preordered version and reread it will be a solid 5 stars because there was a lot to clean up and tie together better i found in the pre edit so i cant hold that against the book! I will update review when i get the final copy !

The FMC is cursed and always knew she was a death bringer who doesnt know her curse is tied to someone else, the prince of wraith. Enemies to lovers trope was for sure tropeinggg - and it was a SLOW burn which i loveeeeee. Action between the two really didnt happen until the end so this was done very very well. But it wasnt just romantasy vibes- the plot was alive and well! And i was extremely shocked with the twists that unfolded in the story. There was action, woman rage, love, mystery, suspense TENSION. I struggled a bit with the world building but thats what first books in a series do. They warp you into the world and you have to piece everything together so this is totally normal to be a bit confused on the world but it does come together! Just pay attention ! it had so much i loveeee and enjoy with dark romantasy. The END was a major major cliffhanger where im like what the F!??? I will be spiraling until book 2 hits !

This series is going to for sure blow up !

Where is the 6 Star rating Goodreads?

I was lucky enough to be selected as an ARC reader for J.E. Caroline’s debut novel, The Venom In Her Veins. But is hard to believe this is her debut novel because this book is beyond 5 stars for me! Her words painted me directly into her world from Page 1! The writing was poetic and this book was unputdownable. When I was forced to put it down, because…adulting, I was thinking about the book and itching to pick it back up! It made me laugh, gasp, blush, cry and eventually it even broke me.

It has everything we love in a Romantacy and more: found family, enemies to lovers, a badass FMC, a swoony Dragon Shifter MMC, a truly original curse, Fae, dragons, an evil King and a Witch Queen, Angels, original magic and so so much more. Imagine if One Dark Window and ACOTAR had a baby, but with Dragons! It is such a truly unique story in a world of copy paste romantasy.

Our FMC, Verena, is so funny (which I was not anticipating) despite the curse that threatens to control her. Her internal monologue had me laughing out loud. She is strong, brave and loves her people hard. Her bravery and loyalty to her friends and family is top tier.
Our MMC, Ronan, is a cross between Xaden and Rhysand. Similar but different: “Smoke Daddy” as quoted by our very own J. E. Caroline herself, not to be confused with Shadow Daddy 😏 He is all swoony and mystery and definitely “touch her and die”.

And the Romance! The romance was everything.

I cannot speak highly enough about this book and I will be screaming its praises from the rooftops for the foreseeable future! And beyond ❤️

So do yourself all of the favors… go follow J.E. Caroline and pre-order TVIHV, releasing April 7, 2026

!! Advanced copy read !!

Firstly I would like to say thank you to J.E. Caroline for letting me be a part of this amazing arc community and letting me into this beautiful world you created early.

You guys I can’t express how quickly I devoured this book, it is just an attention grabber right from the start. Genuinely a 5/5 and wishing I could rate it higher. For me the mystery of questions asked at the beginning and waiting to see if you get an answer is a huge part of fantasy. And let me tell you this book has that ten fold. When one question is answered ten more appear. I do not have the words to properly express how much I recommend going and adding this to your list right now and buying this on April 7,2026!

One of my favorite parts is the growth in Verena. She has to learn and handle so much in this book but comes out even more magnificent in the end. She fights for what she believes in. Protects those around here. And constantly stands up for what is right. The feminine rage in this book is delicious in my opinion! She never backs down from a challenge and nine times out of ten looks for one herself! She has her struggles and fights through them time and time again.

My sweet Ronan, I would like to bottle you up and bring you into this reality. I lived for his povs, he is such an intricate character yet we don’t get nearly enough of his thoughts and reasons until later on. He kept me on my toes wondering what the actual heck he was doing *my mistake for doubting him*. He is a BEAUTIFUL male that has a constant flow of secrets up his sleeve (please read the book to find out what kind… it’s amazing). The commitment he has to those he loves is inspiring and again I’d like one of him myself! Did I mention beautiful? Like shadow, dragon shifter beautiful level guys!

Again I am so thankful for the opportunity to read this early and am so excited to see what happens in the next book! Please everyone go and mark your calendars because this is a MUST read for 2026!!
P. S. I cannot stress enough how IMPORTANT side characters are. Even if you don’t get why, trust me they are!

Firstly, I want to say THANK YOU to J. E. Caroline for allowing me the absolute privilege of being part of this incredible ARC community and the opportunity to immerse myself into this world.

I want to give this book ALL of the stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I cannot even express how captivating and all-encompassing this book is. From the very start, J. E. Caroline’s writing draws you into the expanse of world and character building, providing such beautifully depictive scenes you have no choice but to fall in love (or hate) with the characters and the world from the start.

This was true fantasy with so many layers and questions, you get one question answered and two more pop up in its place. The banter, the love, angst, loss, enimies to lovers, brooding, deep ties, magic, curse, legends… ugh I cannot get enough! Needless to say I am invested until the end with this one! I left this book crying, screaming, raging, happy, shocked… I hit every possible emotion with this book and cannot wait for the ride to continue! This book left me with my jaw on the floor and sooo many questions!

April cannot come soon enough, I need you all to be on this rollercoaster with me now! I’m dying for book two!!!

*4.5 stars!!
So grateful for the opportunity to read an ARC of this! It was so good and I had such a fun time reading! I really liked the magic system and the curse that Verena has is such a unique one. I’ve never read anything like it. This book is dual-POV between the FMC (first person) and the MMC (third person). I loved both characters and the tension between the two was delicious. I’m obsessed with Ronan. I also loved all of the side characters we got. Elva is precious and I’m excited to learn about her journey next book. I’d love to get her POV. I did ship her with someone at the start, but that changed to someone else about halfway through the book and I’m really hoping they get together. There were quite a bit of fighting scenes where we got to see the Viper in action and it was so fascinating to read! Absolutely loved every second. There were times I was bit confused as to what’s going on, though I honestly wasn’t too bothered by this. I did expect a few twists but the ones I didn’t had me so shocked. And that ending?? I am very much not okay. My head was spinning, my heart was breaking, I was raging. This book isn’t even released yet and I need book 2 so badly! Highly recommend!!

If I could rate a book 6 starts I would!!

I struggle reading fantasy, but this book really pulled me in.

I honestly wasn’t expecting to get this invested, but The Venom in Her Veins surprised me in the best way. The worldbuilding never felt overwhelming, and the story stayed focused on the characters, which made it easy to stay engaged even when things got dark or intense.

What really made the book for me was the banter. The back-and-forth between Verena and Ronan was sharp, sarcastic, and full of tension. Their conversations felt natural and fun, and the chemistry built so smoothly that I found myself looking forward to every scene they shared. The slow burn actually worked because the dialogue carried so much of the connection.

Beyond the romance, there’s a lot of emotional weight here. Verena’s struggle with the curse felt personal, and the choices she has to make carry real consequences. I ended up way more attached to these characters than I expected, and I was genuinely sad when the book ended.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable fantasy romance that kept me hooked with great chemistry, emotional moments, and strong character dynamics. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book.

Okay this was actually insane 😭🖤

The enemies to lovers was done SO well because you can feel how much they don’t trust each other at first, but the tension slowly turns into something way deeper. Every interaction felt intense and emotional, and I was constantly like “NO don’t fall for him” (but obviously I wanted them to).

The twists?? I did NOT see them coming. I tried so hard to find little Easter eggs for hints along the way. Every time I thought I figured something out I was proved so wrong. It kept getting darker and more heartbreaking in the best way possible. 🐍💀 IYKYK

The beginning was a little slow, but in a good way!! It really helped build the world and made everything feel more intense later.

And the ending… I’m still mad about it. How can you just leave me on the edge like that!? I need to know where the characters end up. Book two, where you at!?

“He had called me a monster. Perhaps, I was. Or maybe, I was only what the world demanded of me.”

✨ Enemies to lovers
✨ Feminine rage
✨ Who did this to you
✨ Dragon shifter
✨ Slow burn

Verena, who is cursed with The Viper and honestly just trying to survive whatever disaster prophecy she’s been dropped into, is not having a good time, but is taking matters into her own hands, which I loved. The curse keeps everything high stakes but we really get to watch her grow more into herself.

“But fire left unchecked doesn’t warm. It burns. And it will burn you, and everyone you claim to love, if you do not learn control.”

Ronan is the dragon shifter prince MMC and yeah… he’s giving intense, morally grey, “I might ruin everything for you” energy. The enemies-to-lovers actually feels like enemies, which I appreciated a lot.

“She’s the most dangerously unhinged creature he’s ever met. And fates burn him, if he hadn’t been destined to destroy her, he might’ve already fallen.”

The found family bits worked really well and honestly stopped this from being complete chaos all the time (in a good way).

“She is venom, festering in this continent, in your kingdom. A sickness. And sicknesses must be cured. That is the only means to your freedom.”

Elva is out here trying to escape being politically packaged off into marriage, and I was genuinely way more invested in her arc than I expected to be.

There are so many prophecies and twists happening that at some point I just stopped trying to predict anything and went along for the ride.

“I wasn’t talking about the curse. You are the force, Verena. I see you. For everything you’re worth.”

And the ending?? What was that. I need answers immediately.

This whole story is messy in the best way possible. Dragons, enemies-to-lovers tension, prophecy nonsense, and emotional damage.

Chaos, vibes, and opinions are all my own ✨ please give credit if you share.

The Venom in Her Veins by J.E. Caroline was… wow. I’m honestly speechless. This book was pure perfection. If you love dragons, witches, fae, and magic, then you need this book on your TBR immediately. From the very first pages, the story hooks you and leaves you craving more, more, more. The world-building was incredible, and the emotional rollercoaster had me completely invested from start to finish.
Our FMC, Verena, was born an orphan and cursed to destroy. She is one of the strongest female leads I’ve read in a long time. I loved her inner turmoil, her resilience, and watching her grow throughout the story. She was powerful, complex, and impossible not to root for.
Then we have our MMC, Ronan… and wow, he is the ultimate shadow daddy. He has sworn to kill the Viper—aka Verena—and when I say enemies to lovers, I mean true enemies to lovers. These two genuinely want each other dead. Their banter was everything, and watching that hatred slowly transform into something deeper was absolute perfection.
This book was an emotional rollercoaster I never wanted to get off. And the last 4% of the book… no spoilers, but OMG. The ending completely ripped out my soul.
Now the real question is… when is book two coming?! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

WHAT DID I JUST READ

J.E. Caroline why did you do this to me? What am I supposed to do until book two comes out???

This is officially my new obsession. TVIHV is the best fantasy I have read in a while and I will be sharing any and everything related to this.

I don’t even know what to do with myself right now.

Some tropes since I’m struggling to form coherent thoughts:
True enemies to lovers
Badass FMC
Magic
Dragon shifters
Secretsssssss
Slow burn
Curses, oaths, bonds

I feel so incredibly lucky to have received an ARC for this book, and I can’t wait to watch it spread like wildfire once it’s out in the world!

advanced reader copy review —

book: the venom in her veins / j.e. caroline
rating: 4 🌟
spice: 2 🌶️ (towards the end)
do I recommend? yes!

I was SO into this concept and SO excited when I got this arc. A serpent cursed fmc??? ABSOLUTELY YES. It felt fresh and feral in the best way.

The vibes were there, the tension was tense, and I stayed invested the whole time. Both of the MCs give off that slight morally grey vibe and I was here for it.

BUT.. I do wish the world building had a little bit more depth. The first 20% lagged a bit because some pieces felt missing. Some things felt glossed over or not fully explained which made it a little hard to connect some dots plot wise. Things were mentioned without explanation like we should already know what was going on. It didn’t ruin the story, but it did pull me out here and there.

After that 20% mark though???? I SPED through this. I constantly needed to know what would happen next. Absolutely can’t wait for book two!

Thank you so much for providing me with your arc, this was a fabulous first novel! ✨

3.5 stars rounded up, the premise of the book was unique and the further into the book I got, the more captivating the story became. My only complaint is that I felt like the world building was a little messy and I was expected to know the whole back story, each character and how they were involved. I had the reader version and I do feel that if I had a hard copy it would have been easier for me if I had to flip a page back to reread something. I will definitely be reading the second in the series.

[4.5 ⭐️] ARC Review ✨ Thank you so much to the author for an early copy!

This book is the epitome of enemies-to-lovers, slow burn, angst, banter, feminine rage, will burn the world for her, etc. Literally everything you would want in a Romantasy! Dare I say the next fourth wing?? Move over Xaden ? (😬🫢😏)

As with most fantasy books, there is a lot of world building to get through & of course there are still burning questions that must be answered even after finishing the book but it definitely had me hooked & NEEDING the next book in the series ESPECIALLY after that cliffhanger! We love a female villain 😁😜

If you’re into fantasy, romance, magic, dragons PLEASE pick up this book so we can stare at the wall & be emotionally wrecked together! 🤍
