Dukes' Club #3

Wish Upon A Duke

Rate this book
A Widow Who Knows What She Wants:

Lady Imogen Cavendish loves making merry. After surviving years of marriage to an old man, having seized her freedom seems the only intelligent thing to have done. Even so, years of dancing her way through parties has lost its’ luster and all she wants now is to spend most of the year on the small estate she’s purchased in Scotland. There’s just one thing. Her neighbor is an infuriating, superior, and exceptionally handsome duke!

An Arrogant Duke Who Knows It All:

Duncan Hamish Fergus, Tenth Duke of Blackburn, does everything right. Duty might as well be his middle name. After his father very nearly ruined his mother and sister’s life, Duncan is determined to never let the family name be tarnished again. Sacrificing his own pleasure seems a small price to pay until he meets the mad capped English woman, Lady Cavendish. In all his years on the path of righteous, no woman has ever tempted him to stray into sin, but no woman has ever been as mischievous or voluptuous as his saucy sassenach neighbor.

Can Imogen teach the oh so proper duke how to have a little fun or will two hearts be broken by propriety?

I LOVED THIS BOOK! Romantic, sexy and funny, it was totally enchanting from start to finish.

How I imagine Duncan
description

Once…years ago, he’d been like them. Making jokes. Smoking, drinking, making merry, as they put it. But he’d let that go. Unlike them, he took being a duke very seriously.

Duncan had watched his womanising, drunken, gambler father almost ruin the family and its good name with his profligate ways. He fears that any slight slip from a life of sobriety could send him down the same slippery path as his father and it terrifies him. Refusing to be fodder for the village gossips, Duncan is the epitome of everything that is proper until the fateful day he meets his lively Sassenach neighbour, Lady Imogen Cavendish.

How I imagine Imogen
description

…she’d learned that pleasure could easily be had without love. The years since her marriage had proved it time and again, and she’d enjoyed every moment without a second though.

Ever since her elderly husband’s death, Imogen has enjoyed her freedom and lived boldly without any regrets. Her sense of fun, kind nature and winning smile brighten everyone around her. But she has begun to grow discontent with her carefree life and longs for the sort of love that her friends share with their husbands. Life takes an unexpected turn when she meets her handsome neighbour, the ever so proper Duke of Blackburn. Imogen is sure the man obviously needs some fun in his life.

I imagined the initial meeting between the “grumpy” Duncan and the effervescent Imogen would be memorable. In fact, it is one the most memorable hero/heroine first meetings I’ve read in a very long time. Here’s a taster of this wickedly delightful scene.

“I adore it,” she continued, clearly unaware of his state of torture. “I don’t know why more men don’t wear them. They seem to be far more practical for a man’s. . . um. . . Well, they’re more practical.”
At that, he could no longer suppress his groan. He was discussing the freedom of a man’s cock in a kilt with a Sassenach noblewoman. Surely, he’d conked his head on a rock when he’d fallen. Yes. That had to be it
.

As a couple, Duncan and Imogen are irresistable and their romance is such a perfect blend of great chemistry, simmering sexual tension, sparkling dialogue and highly sensual love scenes. Imogen’s sense of fun positively spills off the pages and it’s easy to understand why Duncan falls under her spell and eventually sees what a wonderful woman she truly is.

Imogen wasn’t perfect. She was in many ways the opposite of it…And yet, somehow, that very thing made her the most perfect woman he’d ever met.

Duncan has never enjoyed Christmas. It had always been marred by his father’s drunkenness and then by his mother’s illness. So I loved the scene on Christmas Eve when, for the first time, he knew true joy. There is a poignant moment when Imogen puts a candle in the window and a small knitted baby shoe on the tree and it was so heart-breaking to hear the story of her loss. It made me love her even more because, despite her personal loss, she could still bring happiness to those around her.

As with the previous two books, there are some colourful secondary characters to “assist” our hero and heroine on their journey to a Happy Ever After.

~~~ the Duke of Aston who I love to bits:
“Oh, Aston is quite the character. The man is mad as a loon, a retired pirate if you must know but he’s quite good fun.”
~~~ the powerful and seductive Duke of Roth

~~~ The very pregnant Cordelia and Kathryn who threaten to pop at any moment and their respective doting husbands, the Duke of Hunt and the Duke of Darkwell.
~~~ Duncan’s impulsive sister, Lady Rosamund, who frequently subjects him to “the eye”:

It was the ability to look at one with such disbelief it verged on disgust. If it had taken physical form, it would have been a slap upside the head.

When the Dukes’ Club get together you can be assured of some great banter and, as Duncan finds out to his cost, never trust your so-called friends’ advice regarding matters of the heart - especially when they are all three sheets to the wind!

The Epilogue provides a joyous end to Imogen and Duncan’s story and a hint of who’s book might be next.

Engaging writing, lively characterisation and great dialogue make this a thoroughly entertaining romance. Highly recommended.

Continuing in my cynical, cranky-pants mode, I am grudgingly giving this three stars.

The sweet, whimsical and now carefree widowed h has settled in the Highlands much to the dismay of in-lust but grumpy Highland Duke neighbor. He's an ex-lusty womanizing rake that settled down to gloom and doom respectability due to his father's disgusting carousing, womanizing and so forth ways. Didn't help that the father broke the H's mother's heart and died raving of the French disease.

The h has two couples and one extra male friend visiting from England, the demonic dominator off all things Scottish. All Sassenach's and the men are all Dukes, of course. The couple are also so winningly, whimsically and nauseatingly in love.

Finally, the Duke (the cranky Scottish one) succumbs to our plump, curvy heroine, and she puts the light back in his life. Too bad he yanks it out from her when he makes it clear that with her rep as a Merry Widow, she's not good enough for him. Spine and self-respect intact, she leaves for England after leaving him a note. It's one thing to have a light-hearted affair you know will probably end, but having it spelled out that she's good enough to have an affair with but not marry is too much for her.

He takes the sword out of his ... backend, and leaves for London to woo and win her back.

The book was cute and sweet, and if you are in the mood for a hunky big Scot who knows his way around the femme form (and who doesn't) as well as a winsome and sassy heroine then this is a good one. Some of the banter and antics of her friends was just a little too forced and twee for me, but, see above, I am in a cynical and cranky mood.

And just because...

And finally, these cuties...

Wish Upon a Duke by Eva Devon
The Duke's Club Series Book Three
Duncan Hamish Fergus, Tenth Duke of Blackburn is a bore. Not that he'd say so. He just wants to toe the line so that his dukedom is pure. After all the damage his father had done...he had to be responsible. And that meant choosing a perfect duchess. A flawless in character duchess.

Lady Imogen Cavendish loved life. She lived it to the fullest with her fun parties and other activities. After all, a widow had a certain amount of freedom. Her stodgy neighbor needed to learn to relax...and she was the perfect woman to help him do so.

Duncan isn't fond of Englishmen...or women. His new neighbor isn't only English, but a wild woman who throws wild parties and who knows what else goes on in her hunting cabin. Great story in this series and it pulls in characters from the previous books to add to it.

Originally published at Rookie Romance.

So far, The Dukes' Club series from Eva Devon has been filled with fun and heady romance, and Wish Upon a Duke stays true to this. It was a delightful romp of a romance between two characters that couldn't be more different on paper but make such a wonderful couple.

Duncan watched his father almost ruin the family with his drunken debauchery so he is determined to be a very proper Duke. He has absolutely no intention of providing fodder for the gossips and wants to ensure that the family name is protected. Duncan suppresses much of his personality and tries to shape himself into the sort of stern and respectable man that he thinks he must be. It's really quite sad as we see just how much he's shutting himself off from any enjoyment of life. Of course, all of this means that one day he'll choose a demure and equally proper wife to be his Duchess. Someone with an unblemished reputation who understands the gravity of her position....someone very unlike Lady Imogen Cavendish.

Imogen leads a carefree life of freedom and fun. Her elderly husband died and left her with power over her own life, which she yields as she pleases. I loved Imogen's sense of fun and bright positivity. She's a complete ray of sunshine and brings happiness to others as well. Even though she's living her life as she likes, she does also yearn to find the kind of true and fulfilling love she sees her friends have.

Imogen and Duncan have a wonderful connection immediately, even if Duncan does try his hardest to ignore it and push her away. The two seem like chalk and cheese, but Duncan needs Imogen to bring light and fun into his life. It was also fun to see Duncan realise how much he had misjudged Imogen before meeting her and then to watch him try and atone for his misjudgment.

Despite the personal obstacles they need to overcome to be happy together, Imogen and Duncan are a very sweet couple and Duncan makes a perfect addition to the Dukes' club! This book also hints as to what we might expect next in the series from the irrepressible Duke of Aston, which I'll very much be looking forward to reading!

*I received a review copy from the author, for my honest opinion. Thank you!

THIS STORY WAS ACTUALLY NOT BAD, ALTHOUGH I AM BASING IT ON THE TROUPE OF A WILD WIDOW AND RIGID DUKE. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG WITH THIS COMBUSTIBLE COMBO?
Yet alas, because this series has a repetitive scent to it...the story was predictable in the sense that I couldn't really be bothered to devour it word for word.

While, I love the troupe...there simply wasn't any compelling magic between the characters that reels me in...not that this wasn't an enjoyable story if this is your first Devon Duke book.

OUR HERO is a serious Scotsman who doesn't want to follow in his father's debauchery footsteps, dying of a sinner's disease and leaving his mother to die with a broken heart. So, even if one day he has to marry, it will be a Scotswoman with good breeding and so boring, it's safe from scandal. Of course, life has other plans for him and it comes in the form of a Sassenach widow falling into his arms when he was about to storm over and demand his bonnie neighbour to keep her activities on the low. One thing leads to another, and the infuriating woman seduces him into her bed. The attraction and passion is mutual but, he denies his heart to fall for her. Much luck that will do for him when he can't even stop it.

OUR HEROINE is a scandalous widow who has experienced the lost of a child, and she dances happily from one rake to another. Never has she fallen for anyone, or has a man made her feel the way Duncan does. She takes a gamble to win his heart and like all Devon's stories go...it has the same pattern of encounter to passion to heartbreaking angst and then a happily ever after. I think of all Devon's heroines, I like Imogen best because of her wild nature...she's just so carefree and alive that you just love her for it.

OVERALL it was enjoyable, and I wished I had gotten my hands upon this one first to fully appreciate the entire story. Sadly...there was still something missing...perhaps a hint of originality? Or maybe the characters...while I enjoy the troupe...weren't fully drawn out enough.

Wish Upon a Duke is the third book in the Duke’s Club series. The story opens on the frost-covered lands in Scotland. Then the story ventures into London. A delightful Epilogue three years later is a delightful surprise. This is an enchanting historical romance.

The Duke’s Club had been formed years ago so that the few members would have someone of equal rank to commiserate with and not be puffed up with sunshine and flattery. As a Duke, people insist on fawning. And well, the only one who dares to treat a duke as an equal is another duke.

Once Upon a Duke: 4 stars: Duke of Darkwell; Ryder & Kathryn
Dreaming of the Duke: 2 stars: Duke of Hunt; Jack & Cordelia
Wish Upon a Duke: 4+ stars: Duke of Blackburn & Imogen

Lady Imogen Cavendish is a widow who has enjoyed her freedom and lived boldly with no regrets.

Duncan Hamish Fergus, the tenth Duke of Blackburn, loathes Sassenachs.

Duncan and Imogen’s chemistry is evident. They have sparkling dialogue and simmering sexual tension. Their intimate times are sensual.

I highly recommend this book.

This is the third novel in the Dukes of Christmas. I enjoyed this novel. The characters were great.

I liked Christopher and how he was in the shadow of his brother's relationship. When his brother gets engaged, Christopher becomes the focus of the women of the village. Christopher asks his brother's fiancee if there is a matchmaker in the village. She points him in the direction of Gloria Godwin. Christopher had met Gloria during the second lap of her sky tour and gets frustrated with her. As Gloria attempts to match Christopher, he slowly realizes that Gloria is the one he wants. Christopher wants a bride that will travel with him. Due to events in her past, Gloria is afraid of travel. Can Gloria overcome her past to embrace love with Christopher?

Duncan and Imogen

Wonderful and adventurous book from the very beginning to the end. Thus us a series is a great read,always better to go in order so you can see how the characters fall but not necessary. Duncan always brain proper having having high expectations if life due to his fathers cavalier attitude and almost ruining TBE family and dying from a disease he contacted with the wrong woman. But then he meets Imogen. There like two leas in a pod he just doesn't realize it until its almost two late,but they do get their HEA. Would highly recommend thus author and series. Happy reading!😊

Oh, it could have been 5 stars!!

All that needs to be done is for someone who is well versed in spelling and grammar to edit this book, and it would be a 5 star in my library of read books!
Too many times was the use of 'to' when it obviously should have been 'too'.
Extremely aggravating to have to read a sentence multiple times, in order to figure out what it was actually supposed to be.
If I hadn't liked the story so much I would have just abandoned it to the far corners of my library.

Imogen was a free spirited widow still looking for love and respect.

Duncan was a set-in-his ways Scottish Laird who had his own vision of what his bride should be, until he met Imogen.

The two opposites are attracted to each other, but Duncan has a tough time giving up on his ideals. He believes he can have a brief relationship with Imogen and move on to his ideal bride. FOOLISH MAN.

Imogen has too much pride to sit around and wait for Duncan to come to his senses, but Duncan finally faces reality (thanks to his sister), and fights for Imogen.

I was really disappointed in the editing of this book. Wrong words spelled similarly were in this edition,up to the point of the sex of a baby born switching a few times and descent being used instead of decent which was meant. There were so many of these errors that it started to unwrap me from being there with the characters. It took me out of the magic flow and right into neutral judging reader.

Another five star hit! Erica Ridley never fails to please. Crisp dialogue, characters you quickly come to know and love, and a plot that is fun and makes sense. Christopher travels constantly and Gloria travels nowhere ever. Christopher loves facts and nice, constant rules. Gloria plays with imagination and firmly believes rules are to be broken. It’s a good thing Gloria is the matchmaker and not trying to be a match!

I love the cast of characters, it is truly like a comedy, , Seinfeld crazy antics and characters and the I love you, love you not, let’s come up with the most ridiculous ideas, after the dukes frank and nearly killed each other, to offer advice.
Thus, this has not been my favorite of the 3, it was a little slow but still bloody fun.

Spellchecked

I would have given another star had there not been so many egregious spelling faults. Apart from that it was a well plotted book with characters who develop satisfactorily as the action proceeds.

This was a cute one, since we met Imogen in book 1. I like that the other dukes make an appearance and also allude to stories ahead. Duncan is also a peach. There was a lot more story and less spice and I didn't know that I needed that break. Solid book.

Duncan Fergus, the Duke of Blackburn is, as usual in a bad mood as he goes to confront his neighbour. He has worked hard to be the most proper Duke possible. He will not do, as his father did and bring shame and pain to his family.
Lady Imogen Cavendish is a happy and very friendly young widow. She is independent and set on enjoying her life. Her closest friends have joined her in Scotland for a holiday.
Our two protagonists are not really as different as they think. Our hero has buried his true nature for years. Our heroine is just the one to bring him to life.
A lovely story with lots of laughs and mischief making. Some scorching sex scenes and a wonderful story. It is part if a series but easily read as a stand alone. If you haven't read the others this will tempt you to. I loved it.

What happens when the oh so very proper Duke of Blackburn meets his neighbor, the very merry Lady Imogene Cavendish? Well, the Scottish Highlands will never be the same! Here is Duncan who feels that he must always be proper in order not to bring any more shame into the family like his father did. Then there is Lady Imogene who was married to a much older man and never knew what it was like to have fun. She partied her way through London following his death but now prefers her small estate in the Highlands. Then Duncan comes calling because of missing estate game and suddenly, both of their worlds are upended! With a cast of zany secondary characters Imogene and Duncan discover that two complete opposites can find love as they work through their difficult pasts. Set against the Christmas holidays and in the Highlands and London, this story is full of laughter, love and surprises.

I was given this book by the author for an honest review and I tried to do that. You will definitely not be disappointed!

Eva Devon has done it again!!! Another great book in the Duke's Club Series. I love these characters and the way that they meet for the first time. They actually run into each other and Lady Imogen winds up on the ground with a magnificent Highlander wearing a Kilt on top of her. How delightful!!!

Duncan Hamish Fergus, the tenth Duke of Blackburn is a man who has brought his estate and his family's name back from the brink of ruin and wants to keep it that way. Lady Imogen is a merry widow who loves life and lives it to the fullest. They are instantly attracted to each other. Imogen wants him but Duncan will resist her Siren call if it kills him, and he thinks it probably will. These two are funny, sweet, kind, and made for each other. Imogen just has to convince him. I love the way Eva writes, her style is lyrical, sensual, humorous and she keeps you enthralled You have to read this series and this book...If you love Historical Romance you will love Eva Devon.

I LOVE A MERRY ..... ah, BOOK, right, BOOK.
And this one stars a merry widow, and a kilted kirk-going Scot. Plus a few of her friends leftover from previous books in the series.
The interactions of the characters made me laugh a lot, and made me cry a little. The merry widow's love of the life around her came through very clearly, as did the duke's love of the life around him. The challenge: the life she loves is wine, parties, and song. He, on the other hand, loves his country, and has determined that he MUST behave in totally proper fashion, as designated by the preacher.
The characters are wonderful, conflicted, and flawed. Each has scars, and each has fears, and, most importantly, each has protective walls.
The breaking of the walls, and maturation of the relationship, is what makes this book wonderful to read.
