Aren Tiernal knows that safety is an illusion, that his cruel and powerful brother will never forgive his betrayal. Still, returning to Tyrea to challenge Severn for the throne would be suicide. It’s not until Severn himself comes to collect what’s owed to him that Aren decides to risk everything in an attempt to bring down the most powerful Sorcerer Tyrea has ever known. The mission seems doomed to fail, but it’s Aren’s only chance to save himself, his country, and the woman who thawed his heart.

Rowan Greenwood has troubles of her own. Though she should be a great Sorceress, years of being closed off from her magic have left her unable to control her incredible power. When a pair of ominous letters arrive from her home country, Rowan has to choose between her new life and a chance at saving her family—and just maybe changing an entire country’s beliefs about the evils of magic.

Torn apart by separate quests, Rowan and Aren will have to discover untapped strengths and confront their darkest fears in order to overthrow a ruler determined to destroy them both.

First of all, Torn ends with a cliffhanger. I think it’s definitely worth reading if you liked book 1, but I would have been a lot happier if I had known about the non-ending and waited until book 3 came out and then gotten them both. Perhaps that advice will help you. :)

In any case, I have some good things to say about this book, particularly about the plot. I was (pleasantly) surprised more than once, which is a good thing in a genre that does tend to be fairly predictable. Sparkes avoids the obvious choices (Aren trying to kill Severin and become king himself, in particular) and finds ideas that seem genuinely true to her characters. I also really like the way that she depicts internal conflicts. I can see how some readers might find it frustrating, especially when the characters (mostly Aren) struggle with moral questions that might seem immediately clear to most people; but I believe Aren as one specific individual experiencing the doubts and challenges that he does, and I respect the process he goes through attempting to figure out what he believes, influenced by the various people in his life, but not simply or blindly accepting their moral positions and acting in accordance with them despite his own instincts or thoughts.

Rowan, on the other hand… she’s fighting an uphill battle with me because pretty much everything that happens in the book hinges on her being a complete imbecile. Remember how she comes from a country of magic-haters, and even her own parents were like “Magic bad! Bind it or get out!” and her fiancé was being trained to be a magic hunter – i.e. a dude who kills people who have magic? Well, Rowan the Brain Trust gets a letter from jackass ex-fiancee saying “Come back to town and talk to me… I wanna make up” (heart, smiley face, winky face, xoxo). And despite the fact that she has really important stuff to do (like learning to use her thus far unreliable powers to stop evil Severin from taking over the world and killing her and Aren), she thinks “Yeah, maybe I oughta go into the most dangerous place in the world for me and talk to this chump about feelings.” Shocking results ensue! (Or, you know… not.) And then things get worse because given one opportunity to escape, she takes it… and basically hands herself over to another ex-‘friend’ who promptly hands her back over to the magic hunters. False hope of escape is a trope that I hate in any suspense-style story to begin with, but I doubly hate it when it relies on character stupidity or gullibility.

Things do get a lot more interesting with Rowan at the halfway point, though. What happens with her in magic prison is unexpected and interesting, and introduces a new character who is a satisfyingly complex and nuanced addition to the book. I opt not to spoil.

Fans of Kel and Cassia will be pleased to discover that they feature prominently in this book, and their party (Aren, Kel, Cass) picks up a fourth who is another strong addition to the series. In terms of introducing new main characters in the middle of a trilogy, Sparkes is way ahead of the pack. While such characters often come across as immediately expendable or annoyingly drawing focus from the characters in whom you were invested, these new characters both fit meaningfully into the narrative and earn their share of the word count as vivid and fascinating people.

I’m genuinely looking forward to book 3, even though I’m pretty cranky about the fact that it is book 3 instead of being more of book 2, as it ought to be.

FABULOUS!!! I'm blown away!!!

The first book in this series "Bound" was my favorite book of 2014 and also one of my favorite books of all time. I was so very excited to get the sequel "Torn" but couldn't help feeling a tiny bit concerned it wouldn't be as good as the first especially as sequels can sometimes feel like unnecessary filler just to propel the story forward to the final book of the trilogy. Happily "Torn" was just incredible. It surpassed all my expectations. I feel so hesitant to try to review it as I just LOVED it so much and it is hard to express without spoilers just how good it is. Do not start this book unless you have a lot of free time as it will drive you crazy to have to put it down. If I could have I would have read it in one sitting. First of all I love this authors writing, she writes beautifully. The characters she writes I have grown so attached to as they are all so wonderfully diverse and complex. They grow a lot in this sequel but they do not stray so far from their original personality or do things out of character that you feel like they've become devices just to move the plot forward. They are all just so well written that I've grown attached to them and invested in their stories. New characters are introduced in this sequel. My favorite of them is Florizel who is a flying horse. It doesn't get better than that! Nox is a great addition also, she really grew on me as the story went on and I liked the addition of her back story so we get an idea who she is. This author has created a really neat world for them that is expanded on in this book. The magic system is unique and it is especially fun as each character has their own set of magical capabilities which they access differently. This was such a truly great sequel. It tugged at my heartstrings, made me hold my breath and I wanted to enjoy every word while at the same time I wanted to speed read ahead. It is my favorite book of 2015 so far. If you haven't read this series and you like a great story with wonderful strong characters don't miss these books! If you are a lover of fantasy books this is a must read. I don't know how I will survive until the last book is released. I have never read a book twice but I'm going to listen to these books on audio to hold me over. These books are just that good!!!!

**I was lucky enough to receive a advanced copy of this book provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review**Thank you!

As the second book in the trilogy, I thought the author did a good job adding significantly more depth to Aren. Rowan continued on slow and steady, but I didn't feel made much progress in this book.

Overall a satisfactory continuation.

Oh my goodness, Kate Sparkes is such a hidden gem. Although I have one quibble - some overly convenient plotlines - I'm giving five stars because her work deserves so much more recognition. This is true fantasy with the most exquisite character arcs I've seen in a long time.

Aren's confusion over using his morally ambiguous powers whilst reconciling a desire to both be a better person and win the war that is brewing is quite something to behold. So, too, are Rowan's efforts to accept a power that she fears and move away from moral absolutism. The love story between the two is genuinely so sweet and touching. They accept each other for who they truly are - good, bad, and in between - and it's a beautiful thing.

And Nox! I'm so excited by the addition of this new voice. I'd 100% read a prequel based on her earlier life - especially if it showed us more of the Dragonlands. Because, dragons, obviously. But also because Nox seems damn cool.

I adore this series. Please give it a try!

After devouring Bound, the first book in this trilogy, last summer, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Torn. This was definitely a worthy followup - no sophomore slump here, folks.

Although some readers may disagree with me, I was happy to see Rowan and Aren spend some time apart in this book. Both had some things to figure out and work through and became stronger in the end. It was nice to see Rowan mature and develop and come into her own. Aren struggled with the decision of which path to choose in his life and learned some unexpected news that may change his course entirely.

Some new characters were introduced in this second book and I have to admit I had conflicting feelings regarding Nox. One moment she was behaving like a spoiled brat, then others, she was a nurturing, caring person. Florizel was a delight - how can you not like a flying horse? He's not a new, but Kel was definitely a welcome returning character - such a great sense of humor and loyal friend.

I liked the way magic was portrayed as it related to sorcerers and sorceresses. They didn't have an infinite quantity of magic, making them vulnerable at times, and were gifted in certain areas more than others, giving the plot more complexity and depth.

The final book in this trilogy will determine the outcome of the power struggle, where some characters' loyalties lie, and the repercussions of paths chosen by some characters and the decisions they made in this book. I can't wait.

I received a digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When discussing this series, most readers talk about character development. How great the characters are built and how skilled the author is at depicting their growth. And I totally agree with that.

More than that, what I like about these books, is that the phycology behind each character is on point. While this is a YA fantasy series, the writting is not plagued by the usual suspects of the gendre: stupid or impulsive characters, unrealistic plot, uncharacteristic reactions or actions, drama, angst, instalove or eye rolling scenes crafted only for furtherig the plot.

Each character is alive and "real". Their past perfectly explain their present. They are imperfect ordinary people dealing with extraordinary situations. And they do not necessarily become extraordinary because of it, which I liked.

Aren has always been searching for approval and acceptance, which is why he was his brother's " lap dog" and why when his compass became Rowan, his attitude and believes underwent a huge change to accommodate her moral principals. Rowan is struggling to overcome the lessons and belives instilled in her since childhood and accept herself as a magical creature. Nox had to survive in an inhospitable environment, full of hardship and lacking in love so she is hard and selfish. They are all like rough stones being polished by the forced rolling downhill that is their journey.

The only reason I gave only 4 stars to this book is because it has a slow beginning. Kate Spankes is at her best when writing a road trip.

I am so incredibly impressed with this book. the first book (for me) did not capture my attention and didn't really have an alluring plot. everything just felt really disconnected. The sequel, Torn, is completely different. I literally could not put it down!! At first I was hesitant about Rowan and Aren going separate ways, but I shouldn't have been. In fact, I think the book was better because of it. Rowan really grew into her own and Aren makes some progress on figuring out what type of man he wants to be. Really, you don't miss the romance at all. Torn is filled...like bursting with action that will keep you on your seat. Oh, and the betrayals (yes plural)!!!!That was just a shocker. Family reunions also happen, which are sweet...ish.

Old characters like Kel and his sister join the permanent adventure, as well as new characters like Nox (she's a fiesty one.) The only criticism I have to give is that things really did get a little too wordy sometimes. I wish the book had just gotten to the point. there isn't a need to be overly descriptive.

If you were on edge about the first book, definitely give Torn a try. Sparkes' writing is so much more fleshed out, the voices are strong, and the plot is attention-holding!

Torn is such a delightful, enchanting and still intriguing sequel! I loved it!!!! On this book, Rowan and Aren have a different path to follow, but still didn't make their love get weaker. On the contrary, because of the time, both spent together, they change their personalities, their way to act and their way to see the world, people around them. With that they become stronger to fight for what is the best. As expected, Rowan put herself in such a stupid danger, and because of that Aren, Kel, Cassia and Nox (a new surprising strong character) see themselves in a dangerous adventure to rescue her! But it's promising and full of action and new discoveries! That was a great reading and i can't wait for the next!

A little slower than the first book

I enjoyed this book but I think it could have gone a bit faster. It was interesting. I didn't like the Nox character at first but she grew on me by the end. I will likely read the final book in the trilogy in the next few weeks.

Another great adventure

I have fell in love with the Bound trilogy. It's been fun and scary traveling along side Aren and Rowen. It's been an interesting ride. The next book will be another and final adventure I'm excited to take with them. I'm excited to see how they win the crown back and bring the earth back to harmony. I'm very hooked to the story line and can't seem to put the books down. I wish the last 2 books had a whisper sync book so I could continue with the story while I need to get stuff done. Hopefully they'll add those audio books soon. Anyway, I really have enjoyed this trilogy.

Fascinating must read!

Absolutely loving this series. Although in it the good guys aren't always quite heroic in their actions, the intentions behind them are. Sometimes they act without thinking and opening up opportunity for more betrayal. This time while separated. Both will need to learn who they are and accept who that is, although each for very different reasons, if they hope to survive.
Once again, Ms. Sparkes has woven an intriguing tale of magic, friendship, loyalty, family, betrayal, danger, hope, and love-impossible as it should be.

This is a review of the 3 books as a whole. Copied from the 1st book review :
A friend of mine told me to read this series. I hadn't read in a while, so I started this, and was hooked. What I like is that it is full of surprises. I love the characters, and the way she brings us in to the story, no useless or missing information. I personally, enjoyed Torn more than the others, that book I was able to get right in the book and see it as I read it, I don't know why the others didn't do it for me too. But All 3 books were fun to read. It has a little bit of everything that I like, mer-people, flying horses, magic, humor and little bit of love, but not where it bored the reader. There were fights and war, and creativity throughout all the pages. I would recommend this series to anyone!

I enjoyed the first book in this series, Bound and enjoyed Torn just as much.

Following Aren's character arc in this book was interesting. I enjoyed Nox's character as well: prickly and sometimes brutally honest but also kind and strong-willed. All of the characters and their relationships with one another are well-developed.

Another aspect of the book I enjoy is Kate Sparke's vivid description of her world and its different kingdoms. It makes me feel even more immersed in the story.

Can't wait to read the third!

This one was not as good as the first book. It took well into 100 pages for me to get into this one. A new character is introduce in the first person version (Nox) and it makes sense why at the end. Still a good read, just took me a while to like this.

Definitely some good work from Ms. Sparkes once again. I like the pace of the story and the different plot twists. I felt the ending was a bit abrupt though. Nox's attitude really grates on my nerves though lol. I haven't warmed up to her as yet at all. Also urgently requesting an audio book for the rest of the series!

Danger and death surrounded us, but seeing her again, having her so close, cut through all of it and strengthened my body and my spirit. Even if I died in that compound, at least I would be with her. But by the gods, I would fight to get us out.

What Bound lacked in action, Torn more than makes up for. This book is very busy putting us into the next major goal of the story and establishing elements that will come into play later. But despite this book having a lot more going on the than travel and interaction developments of Bound, Torn isn't lacking on worthwhile character development.

Throughout the novel, we see both Aren and Rowan address and struggle with conflicts. Rowan is still overcoming the prejudices and fears ingrained in her that stifle her magic and have clouded her judgement--like believing in a strict black/white type of mortality-- and she eventually makes a great leap in learning to accept things and make peace with them so she can protect herself and the people she loves without guilt or shame, while Aren goes through a long period of uncertainty and rediscovery with his own sense of identity and mortality, coming out at the end with a better sense of who he is, the good in him, the bad in him, and that he is okay with existing in a grey area where, while he's not a white knight in shining armor, that he isn't a monster either. The book very eloquently addresses these internal obstacles and it gives the characters a greater complexity and makes their relationship with one another even stronger. Aren and Rowan are one of my most beloved literary couples--I think they are almost neck and neck with Aleksey and Lila from The V Girl.

This book also introduces us to a third main character who gets a fair share of first-person POVs: Nox. She's also a potioner who makes her place in the group as both a healer and a fighter. There's a lot to like about Nox, but she can also get grating. Where Rowan is open and warm, Nox is prickly with defenses and she tends to be much more mean spirited and prone to spiteful anger, a foil to Rowan's inviting and forgiving personality despite them both being compassionate people. I think she makes for a good addition to the books, since a lot of Rowan and Aren's POV chapters reflect off of each other with their shared romantic attachments even when they're apart.

I'm also happy to report that, despite Aren and Rowan being separated for a large chunk of the book that we aren't denied sweet moments between them. Their thoughts always shift back to one another for a moment before resuming the tasks at hand and I like that the author didn't just forsake the romance once they were officially together--their relationship does have its bumps, but I'm really happy that, unlike in The Beauty of Darkness the author didn't throw in unnecessary misunderstandings or conflicts to negatively affect their feelings and create drama. The bumps in Rowan and Aren's relationship are more about circumstances keeping them apart, not them actually having doubts about their mutual affection. It's nice that they stay loyal and committed to each other, always eager to reunite and keep moving forward together.

As I said before, Kate Sparkes is a superb writer who easily immerses me in her fantasy world. The editing is still great and the story is remarkably constructed. It's every bit as enjoyable as Bound and only has grown and developed the story in a good way. While Nox isn't my favorite, I like that the author was able to add in another layer to the tale. There's very little I can tout as being negative about Torn, much like I didn't really have anything negative to say about Bound. And that isn't just my general love for the series blinding me--even in books I love a lot I usually have a few nitpicks, but this one just really works for me.

It's definitely worth it's $4.99 pricetag to me and I recommend it, especially if you read Bound and were a little put off by how much traveling was done in that one. This one starts to make the bridge into a really full on action and magic filled fantasy, so it's definitely a pretty thrilling read! Another five star winner for me.

This was almost as good as the first book. I can't say I honestly loved it like the first, but it held my interest enough that I will definitely be continuing the story. Our main characters have definitely been pulled apart in this second book. The inner conflicts of Rowan and Aren having to decide what is right or wrong is a struggle for them both and was needed, I think, in order for them to grow. They both have very interesting abilities and both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'm loving Rowan's new abilities with [spoiler alert].....water. If you have ever seen the animated series called "Avatar: the Last Airbender" then you know what happens when you can control water. It's a very powerful ability that can control even a person since we are all made up of water! I do miss Rowan's ability to heal, which I find to be way cooler and more interesting, but this new ability is just as interesting as the last. I can't wait to see what else the author will come up with!

I liked this book better than book 1, where I felt too much was focused on Aren and Rowan's relationship/the romance. This one felt like it had more adventure, and the separation allowed the two characters to grow on their own.

Aren goes on a journey to find his father, Ulric, to try to stop Severn, and Rowan goes to Darmid to see her family but runs into problems. Aren struggles more with who he is in this book as he tries to discover who he is without his position and power to define him. He questions whether the way he uses his magic is dark, as seen by the mer, his grandfather, and Brother Phelun of the Dragonfreed Brothers. He sort of comes to a realization/discovery of balance near the end of the book in terms of knowing who he is.

Rowan struggles also, but with her magic. After the events of book 1, she's no longer limited by the binding, but she is still held back by her own fears and other's expectations. Ulric is definitely a character I'm unsure about- he is cold and ruthless, but was also capable of kindness. Especially after reading the novella "At Any Cost," I can sort of empathize with him, but he's neither purely good nor bad. I was really frustrated with Rowan

There's still plenty of romance despite the two MC's separation- they think of each other often and I thought that was romantic. Also, the introduction of Nox's character and POV was unexpected I was really irritated with Nox and her attitude. I understood why she has to put up a tough front, but she was also unduly harsh at times, judging without understanding. She and Aren have similarities- they can both be stubborn, harsh, cold, rational, and I admire her skills, but I'm going to have to keep reading to see if I truly like her.

"I closed my eyes. Magic. For so many years I had dreamed about it, imagining it was something as beautiful as what I'd read about in old stories instead of the abomination my people told me it was."

I absolutely loved Bound, so I was extremely excited to start reading Torn. Kate Sparkes has such a creative mind. Her magical world is so detailed and her characters are amazing. We learn more and more about the characters as the book goes on. We are even introduced to a few new characters! Torn definitely does not disappoint!

Torn starts exactly where Bound left off. Rowan is safe in Belleisle, trying to learn how to control her magic. Aren leaves her there, in order to embark on his own journey. Aren needs to find his father in order to bring Severn's reign to an end. Rowan gets news of her family and allows herself to be led into a trap and captured by hunters. Aren, of course, changes his plans to go find Rowan. Let the adventure begin!

"I loved you before you had control of your magic. But there's something incredibly attractive about you as a true Sorceress."

I love Aren! He is changing for Rowan and you can really see it, in this book. This book is full of adventure, secrets, betrayal, love, friendship, and new bonds. Rowan and Aren can't trust anyone, not even family. There are a few surprises throughout this book as well! I can't believe how complex the story has become and how perfect it is tying together!

"Blood doesn't mean much. Most of my worst enemies are family members."

Many people find big thick books intimidating, but I love them! These books are huge and full of excitement. There is not one boring part! I was always on the edge of my seat, reading like it was the last book I'll ever read. Kate Sparkes had me so deeply involved with the story and the characters. It is going to be very hard for me to wait to see what happens. I need to get my hands on the third book. If you haven't read this series, you are definitely missing out on something really great. Greater than life.

I was happy that Torn didn't suffer from 'middle book syndrome'. It picks up a bit after where book 1 left off, making it easy to get back into the story. I love a good fictional relationship, so I was a little apprehensive about Rowan and Aren going on separate journeys. I'm happy they did, we really were able to see them grow individually as characters, never once having their bond questioned. I like that, it's realistic and comforting to know. I like the drama in the plot, not the relationship!
I was a little put off by Nox, especially when we began reading from her POV, but eventually once the flow began I was able to understand her more. She's definitely a flawed character in my opinion and my feelings toward her wavered constantly. Settling on the positive and curious side, I look forward to see where she will fit into all of this!
I'm happy I finally set time aside to read this, although started a few weeks ago, real life got in my way. But I flew through the last 75% happily and easily in one weekend.
Slight cliffhanger, but a wrapped up ending. I highly recommend this series, the classic element reminds me of the stories I read when I was younger, the ones that made me want to read more. Looking forward to the third book!

Okay, now I have no idea why it took me nearly a month to read this book. It wasn't difficult, or boring, or hard to follow. I guess I've fallen into a reading rut.

Torn picks right up where Bound left off, though the author introduces a new character, and continues the story of Aren and Rowan. Personally, I adore Aren's character arc, but I find Rowan's to be equally capitivating. Some of the events made me want to beat my head against the wall (I mean, now can characters be so STUPID sometimes?!) but the unexpected plot twists soothed the worst of my reader angst. There's near-constant action that fills every page, and incredibly realistic reactions from the characters regarding traumatic events and even their own battles of conscience.

If you enjoyed Bound, you'll definitely want to pick up this sequel to discover the fate of your favorite characters. I believe the book can be read on its own, but you might miss out on subtle references to past events. Also: the book ends in a pretty hefty cliffhanger, so make sure you have the next one handy!
