Fight for your afterlife. The Emperor of the Eight-Legged Dragons thinks he’s got Grady Hake on a leash. From his new role as the gang’s top hitman, Hake plays the loyal servant, training his Cursed Death Spirit and plotting a path to put the Emperor in the dirt. Trouble is, Hake might not survive long enough to take the Emperor on. The angel who killed Hake the first time around warned him that choosing the path of avenging monster would start a war with every Reaper in the universe. But bent on protecting his friends and bringing justice at any cost, Hake didn’t listen.
Now an army of cosmic executioners is coming to collect Hake’s soul, and all his power as a Death Cultivator might not be enough to save him.
I am being forced against my will by Goodreads to have a capital E at the beginning of my name, even though the correct spelling is "eden." So there's that.
But also . . .
I am invincible. I am a mutant. I have 3 hearts and was born with no eyes. I had eyes implanted later. I didn't have hands, either, just stumps. When my eyes were implanted they asked if I would like hands as well and I said, "Yes, I'll take those," and pointed with my stump. But sometimes I'm a hellbender peeking out from under a rock. When it rains, I live in a music box.
But I'm also a tattoo addict, coffee junkie, drummer, and aspiring skateboarder. Jesus actually is my homeboy.
Title: A fantastic return after a long wait Content Ratings: Language – PG13; Violence – PG13; Other – PG13
Why, you might ask, would you mention the long wait in the title of a review that will most likely be seen by readers who didn't experience that long wait (between book 3 and book 4 releases)? I'm glad you asked - because it highlights just how good this author is. See, I read book 3 right about 5 years ago and loved it (just like the previous books in the series). I was really looking forward to the next book. ...and looking ...and waiting ...and, finally, somewhat giving up hope and moving on. I was very pleased to find out just a few weeks ago that this was not only a thing but it had a release date! I was in the middle of other books, so I didn't go back and reread the first 3 books. Instead, I decided to see if I could piece it together from a recap or whatever happened in book 4. And this brings us to my point. There was no recap. There was never a point in the story where I thought "oh, she just put that in to remind us what happened". Nothing so obvious, and yet I was never lost and had just enough information trickling in to bring back the needed memories from the other books - just masterful writing. Unsurprising, since that's actually what I've come to expect from eden. (That and killing off characters, although she does toy with changing her ways in this book - see if you can spot how when you read it). All that said, I enjoyed the book from start to finish, and I'm excited for book 5, which I think is the series finale. Oh, and just in case you're worried about another 5 year wait, I'm told there won't be one. The book is written and is going through the process - just waiting for a release date, probably this summer. Bring it on!
I just love Grady Hake and his abilities as a death cultivator, however not everyone seems to admire this trait in him. The angel that had killed him had warned him that the path of revenge was dangerous, however Hake was now pretending to serve the Emperor of the eight-legged dragons, and he, Kest and Warcry left Shinotochi-Ryu to travel to Selk, the underwater planet, home to Kest his selken girlfriend. It was the year of elections and Kest was going to contest these, with Warcry choosen as her champion, to fight the other chosen champions in the arena. Many an attempt was made on his life to take him out of the games. Takeshi, the komodo Emperor, had tasked Hake to take out his rivals namely the technols, however Hake was following his own agenda, betraying the Emperor, and this endangered all their lives. He was working to clean out the CPA, killing the corrupted ones who'd been bought, using his judgement powers to weed these out, and leaving havoc behind. A ghost appeared to him warning that things were gooing to get difficult and boy did they do so! .Dying to read book 5 as the ending is worrying to say the least for poor Grady.
Really enjoyed book 4. The humour, heart, action, and rich immersive worldbuilding keep me coming back for more. I love the blend of sci-fi, western, and cultivation elements. I especially love how deeply the main characters care about each other, it really comes across in their thoughts and actions. Loved every moment and can’t wait for book 5.
