Pleiades Academies #1

To Defy Angels

Rate this book
Like most things in his life, it started at a funeral.
Like most things in her life, it started with a chase.

Echo doesn't remember much of her past, but she has embraced her new life with Mama Gamma, the woman who took her in, and little Sy, the other young orphan whose secret they are all guarding.
It is a death sentence to bear the mark of the curse, and Sy’s features do nothing to hide it.
Surviving in The Hollow is becoming harder each day, but Echo has a plan. There's one market day every few weeks when the city gates open.
She has nothing to sell but she can steal enough to buy her small family a crossing to the Continent.

When market day comes, it coincides with a funeral. Another orphan girl from Pleiades, the academy of the seven orders, is dead.

Echo thinks the funeral proceedings are the distraction her plan needs, except that everything goes wrong. Very horribly wrong.
She ends up in the last place someone like her should be in. The academy where her kind have been dying one by one, and she believes she knows who is doing it. The Doubler, the next Kardinal. The vicious boy who already wears the mark of the Imperial Vylone.

She doesn't know why he is killing the girls, but she is certain that she is next. Except she is not going to let it happen. She will get him before he has the chance to kill her as well.

ARC Review | To Defy Angels
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 | 🌶️ 1
First of all—before I even get into the story—I need to give this author her flowers 💐.
N. Sonia Nkera, your writing is poetic, intentional, and mature. The kind of writing where I know I can’t casually skim between folding laundry or answering “Mom?” for the fifteenth time. I have to mentally prepare to lock in when I read your work—and I mean that in the best way possible.
Now, the only reason this didn’t get a full five stars from me is because the ending felt just a little rushed. Just a hair. And honestly? That says more about how invested I was than anything else—I wanted to sit in that ending longer.
This story gave me dark, final‑movie Harry Potter vibes, but elevated with rich African influences, deep religious undertones, and magical elements that felt both ancient and dangerous. The atmosphere was heavy in the best way—moody, intense, and layered. The kind of book where you feel the weight of what’s happening instead of just reading about it.
The character development was so well done. Watching everyone evolve, fracture, and strengthen across the story kept me fully immersed. And that ending??? Whew. I genuinely felt like I was part of the curse too—stressed, tense, and holding my breath.
This book pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn’t let go. Even as an exhausted mom with a million things on my plate, I made time for this story—and it was worth every moment.
If you’re ready to lock in, feel something, and be transported?
This one’s for you.

I was excited to start this book after reading the premise/description because it sounded so promising. I’ll start with what I liked about this:
- the world building and castes were interesting, especially what I saw of the Kulta people. I was interested in their rituals, their spells, all of it.
- Pet was my favourite character, enigma that she was. The glimpses into her mind were the best parts of TDA.
- The mystery of the curse was intriguing. Piecing it together through the events of the day it began, the consequences and how it affected the land and the girls was fun to read.
- the reveals in the last 25-30% of the book were well done.

However, the above was not enough. My biggest gripe is the fact there was too little magic. This was much more of a mystery than a fantasy and were it not for the existence of the curse and mentions here and there of Kulta witchcraft, I would be hesitant to describe this as a fantasy at all. I had expected the effect of the curse on the girls to be much more fantastical so what I got instead felt underwhelming. My reading experience was also impacted by the events of the book not feeling cohesive enough. It felt like some events that happen didn’t quite occur naturally but had to come into place to move the plot along e.g how Echo came to be in the Academy. Echo herself was a challenging MC to view this world through: I couldn’t get a good grasp of her emotions and during her time at the Academy, she didn’t seem to have much agency and reacted as the plot needed.

Still, this was a fast, engrossing read and I finished it in a matter of hours. All thanks to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review ♥️

Advanced Reader: I loved this book so much I finished it in less than a day! The characters and their belief systems are well thought out and compelling to read about. I usually see a plot twist coming but these caught me fully by surprise and added so much depth to the story! I can’t wait for book 2 already

this is giving rich dark academia!

the politics & religion is so interesting, and i didn’t see a single plot twist coming, even when i thought i knew what direction it was heading it.

there was so much build up and things would get revealed at the perfect moments.

i am truly enamored with this story & i cannot wait to see where Echo & the Doubler go from here.

this was dark, mysterious, & full of emotions. 🙌🏽🖤

To Defy Angels surprised me in a way I will not forget. I signed up to be an arc reader with the premise of dark academia, a blend of religious fervour and politics, and given the name, it involved angels.

What I got was a rebellious petty thief who did not know the world of pain she was about to unleash on her country’s chosen one. Echo, our FMC, lives in the poorest part of the country. She scratches out a living for her adopted sister and her adoptive aunt by selling ‘pamphlets’ and doing a side hustle as a uhmmm relocate-er of goods, even as she works in the bar beneath her home. As you can tell, she is busy and doing all she can to keep things afloat. Echo is also hiding a grave secret, which I will not share because it is a crucial part of the plot.

However, I will say something egregious happened throughout her country, and she and her adopted sister were affected by it. This makes life much more dangerous, as those who were affected are immediately taken into a school. The thing is, at this very religious school, those affected girls keep dying. Insane right? How will you be segregated into a school where people like you are just dying! Echo tries to avoid it, but she was caught.

As you can tell, there are many, many interesting links in this plot. And this is only from Echo’s point of view.

Then there is the other main point of view, our MMC’s. He is a man of many names, and too many secrets as well. He is wired differently, and one of the most enjoyable and intriguing aspects of this story was seeing his secrets laid bare! You get one impression of him, and then that changes, and then it all swings into drama, and up until the very end, you still think you understand and then at the last line of the book, you come to the realisation that this author was planning to swindle your brain just like Echo does with her ‘customers’.

Hot damn, this was a good book! Mostly because of the way the author let little things slip that initially seem unimportant, only for you to realise it was intentional and vital to the entire plot. I was caught hook, line, and sinker! There was no putting it down. It was let the Kindle hit me in the face as I fell asleep, and waking up as it hit me, to read a few more pages until it fell again, kind of good!

To Defy Angels delivers on its promises of mixing religion and politics, as well as the dark academia side. Although we spent little time in the classroom, which I really did not mind. The events around the classrooms were the real draw. This book is written beautifully. It is captivating. And it has me craving book 2 in a way that makes my brain itch. I hope as many people as possible find this book and enjoy it the way I did.

{ADVANCED READER REVIEW}

This was my first time reading anything by N. Sonia
Nkera, & I can honestly say it will not be my last.

To Defy Angels completely pulled me in from the very beginning & held my attention all the way through.

One of the things I loved most about this book was the sense of mystery woven throughout the story.
The way the past is revealed through flashbacks felt natural & added depth without ever slowing the pacing.

Those glimpses into earlier events made everything feel more layered & meaningful, especially as the plot began to unfold and connections started clicking into place.

The touches of magic scattered throughout were subtle but incredibly effective.
Rather than overwhelming the story, they added intrigue & atmosphere, making every moment feel just a little more charged. I found myself constantly wanting to know more about how everything worked & what it all meant for the characters.

I was especially fascinated by the Kulta people.
Their history, culture, & use of magic felt rich and immersive, & the strong African mysticism elements brought something fresh & unique to the story.
Every time the Kulta were mentioned, I felt instantly drawn in.
It added a layer of depth that really set this book apart for me.

The plot twists were another highlight.

Just when I thought I had things figured out, something would shift & completely pull the rug out from under me.
It kept me fully engaged & eager to keep turning pages.

In terms of characters, Pet was incredibly compelling, & I really enjoyed watching her journey unfold.
The relationship between her & Echo developed in such a natural & satisfying way.
It never felt rushed & their dynamic kept pulling me in.

I also absolutely loved Sys’s sweet but rebellious nature & Echo’s determination & fighting spirit - both added so much energy & tension to the story.

& That ending…😮‍💨 I neeeeed book 2!

Overall, this was an amazing read - captivating, unique, and full of heart.
I’m already looking forward to seeing where the story goes next & cannot wait for book two!

To Defy Angels is a YA dark acadamia novel that steps out of its genre and into a complex world of curses, colonization, and religious wars.

Echo can't remember her life before the curse hit, marking girls across the island with pale white spots on their skin or hair. She is one of the marked, and her very survival depends on hiding this fact.

The Doubler is a young man who remembers a time before the curse — and he remembers Echo. Convinced she has something to do with it, he makes Echo his next target. Cursed, in a way, with violent blackouts, he is intent on getting more information from Echo about the root of the curse, and his role in it.

When these characters' paths cross, both have questions they want answered — and both want the other dead. What follows is a desperate search for answers and a chaotic story of survival, religious control, and the extents people will go to for power.

While the setting is an academy, this story doesn't feel like acadamia necessarily — there is no focus on the classes or many of the other students; it is fully a fantasy story about two desperate characters who happen to be at the same school. The time period also, is not important to the story but the vibes are. There are cars, electric lights, but a permeating sense that most people don't have access to this technology. The school's ancient buildings add to the timeless setting of the story.

Featuring a colorful cast of characters, the book's worldbuilding and hierarchies sometimes got confusing but I was fascinated to learn about the different households and religions.

There is a lot left unanswered, and this book is definitely setting up for book 2. I fully expect that book 2 will dive further into the lore and the past, as well as the connections between our characters and what that means for the future.

I recommend this book if you like apocalyptic stories, religious symbolism, and political fantasy.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you N. Sonia Nkera for the eARC.

ARC Review

Honestly this is the second time I have read a book by this author. Despite the different genres she writes I am mostly interested in this particular one, African Mythology kind of writing.

I was really excited for this one and it did not disappoint. A lot of confusing statements but it all makes sense at the end. I can't wait to read the next book.

Now let's talk about the plot, I think a number moments in the book made me laugh despite the implied seriousness of the book. The plot was unpredictable shrouded with a lot of mystery and suspicions but I liked it. A lot of plot twists to keep you on your toes. It has a drop of horror in it at least to me. And the cult-like vibe was a plus.

About the characters, I wouldn't say I have a favourite but I could say Pet was my favourite, despite her being quite suspicious I really liked her for showing up for Echo every single time. I think she is kind of neurodivergent but I don't know I loved her.

With Echo and The Doubler, their relationship was interesting, always at each other's neck despite them being really similar. They don't realize it but they are pretty similar maybe has to do with their hidden identities that is later revealed.

Sy and Mamma Gamma was really the found family Echo needed. I am sad about some particular deaths. (Ps: I am trying to keel this spoiler free as possible).

The concept of religion and politics being two side sof the same coin is so true, notice how easily they used religion to colonize countries.

They is still much to the plot that I can't wait to discover.

Warning: Do not trust anybody. I was suspicious of everybody, so didn't get attached to the wrong characters.

This was a solid 4.5 stars for me. I really enjoyed and if you are into dark academia. This one is definitely for you.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I give it 4,25 ⭐
In To Defy Angels we follow Echo, a girl who doesn't remember her past. She is a girl with the mark of a curse and that is a death sentence. Girls with the mark are send to Pleiades, the Academy of the Seven Orders. And eventually all the girls with the mark end up dead. The Doubler is the boy destined to be the next Kardinal and he captures Echo. He recognizes her and is determined to kill her, before she gets the chance to kill him.
What an intruiging read! The story gave us a murder mystery but also slowly revealing more about Echo's past. There are bits of information given throughout the book and it kept me thoroughly engaged. Every little snippet kept me craving more to unravel the mystery. A giant puzzle to piece together.
I really liked Echo as our main character. She is very protective of her adoptive sister who is also marked and more visibly marked than she is. So she'll do everything to keep her safe. She also has some flaws, after the third time she tries to kill The Doubler I thought: girl, maybe you need to plan it first cause this ain't working!
The Doubler was interesting from the start. He has some serious dark and disturbing thoughts and we slowly learn more about him. But in the end I still have so many questions left, which I hope will be answered in the next book.
There are some revelations in the last 20% of the book I definitely did not see coming. And I think I spent the last few chapters wide eyed and gasping. I enjoyed putting this puzzle together and there are a lot of missing pieces still I hope to find in the next book, because I will certainly read it!

💕 This story had an interesting premise. The different cultural and societal groups all within the confines of a well isolated island.

Echo comes from The Hollow, which seems to be an area of poverty and derelict. She and Sy are cursed and she is desperate to get off the island. Our first mystery - what is this curse?

The Kulta clans inhabit the far end of the island. From what I grasp, it is a group of ancient mystics, with knowledge of herbs, rituals, and potential magic. This is a group that I would have loved to delve more into-their history and belief system - maybe see some magic.

Finally, the bulk of the story takes place in the Noble City that controls the island. A group of converts and believers whose lives centre around the 7 angels. The Pleiades Academy is akin to a school run by Catholic priests and nuns more focused on cleansing the soul than anything else.

Within that is a 20 year old man known as The Doubler. Thrust into a role he wants nothing to do with - the anointed Kardinal, his birthright. But he’s blacking out and killing cursed girls within the academy. But all he really wants is to seek revenge on Echo - a girl he’s been waiting 7 years to find. Another mystery - what is causing him to black out and kill?

I feel like this story is setting up for something but even by the end of the book we don’t have much information. There are mentions of mysterious and even supernatural elements. Curses, magic, dark shadows, moths. But none of it is clear. The book gives you just enough to keep reading book 1, but I’m not sure if there’s enough to pick up book 2.

There were many questions and not enough of them were answered to satisfy me.

Thoughts:
If you're into:
✅Dark Academia
✅ Multi-POVs
✅ FMC who can't remember her past
✅ African Mysticism x Catholicism.
Then I think this book is for you 🤭

✨ Characters:
I was surprised when I realised this had multiple POVs, confused at first sure, but it did work out in the end since I loved seeing other perspectives from the characters. I especially loved Pet, the others didn't stand out as much to me but I would literally die for that sweet girl. The FMC had a valid reason for wanting to kill honestly, her sister, her friend, the one who took care of her... I wouldn't be surprised if she had a villain arc, like go get it girl. The MMC, I still have a grudge on him but I love when he calls Echo, Noise ToT. I don't like nicknames that much on some books, they make it sound cheesy, but this made me laugh honestly.
💖 Pacing:
I would say it was fairly fast paced, a bunch of things happening one after the other, some breathing space but then BOOM you're thrown back into the water which is fun ✨.
🍪 Ending:
The ending was IT, literally IT I have no other words to describe the last few chapters. The plot twists, the maps, the world building was wonderful. I wanted to learn more about the curse and the magic in that world and hopefully it will be explained more in the next books, can't wait!

What an excellent, evocative, and thoughtfully written book by Nkera. Dark academia meets religious and political intrigue in this first book of the series.

The FMC, Echo, is unapologetic in the best way. She's not morally grey or good. She works to serve those she loves and cares for as a primary. Regardless of whether that makes her do bad things or hurt others. She is strong and doesn't let anyone take her down or bend her will.

The MMC, though, is far more convoluted. He thinks evil thoughts about Echo. He acts or pretends to be evil to others. But inside, his mind is torn apart with the wrongness he sees in himself. You can't help but like him, even if he does act against our FMC.

The side characters are also extremely well characterised and thought out. Every person has their place in the story and for our main characters. Pet was my absolute favourite ever. Her personality was perfect against Echo's angst and serious determination. Pet allowed for softness and charm, perhaps even a bit of whimsy!

This is definitely a book about building up the plot and setting the scene. You are left with questions and the insatiable need for more. I can't wait to see where book 2 will take us!

The start was slow and honestly a bit faulty. But what you really need to know is that every word matters. Do Not skip the chapter headers. Typically I don’t like stories that don’t give you enough information to at least attempt to figure things out, but it’s important to keep in mind that none of the narrators know what’s going on and are so singularly focused on their own problems/concerns that if you only pay attention to what they are paying attention to than you might get very lost. This is YA fantasy so the pacing is on the slower side and I feel like the FMCs capabilities diminished over the course of the book which isn’t typical and I’m left wondering if it was intentional or not. Since there is a lot of parallels between her and the MMC I’m leaning towards yes but it could have been clearer.

Overall this is a really interesting story and I’m happy that it sparked my hunger for more fantasy stories. The world building is solid but there is less backstory than I prefer. However I do like that the cliffhanger was more of a to be continued it set the anticipation without leaving you with a book hangover. After finishing this I’m really excited to go back to the author’s other story that I have on pause.

It promised mysticism and religious conviction - and let me tell you it really delivered on that! My itch for sects, clans and ritual magic has been scratched, but I must get more!

A big thank you to the author, N. Sonia Nkera, for giving me an advance reader copy of this book, at no charge. This is my honest, voluntary review.

This story is told mostly in a dual POV, but some other POVs get sprinkled in between - and it added so much depth to the story this way.

This is a dark fantasy in a religious academic setting - African mysticism mixed with Catholicism. 7 years ago a plague struck the lands and girls throughout got cursed. Marked ones have since been rounded up and brought to the academy. To be cured… but most girls have met unfortunate and tragic ends.

However, our main female character Echo and her “adoptive” sister, have evaded the religious leaders and school ever since. Echo can hide her marks and manage to live a mostly normal life, hidden in plain sight. Until one day…

A lot happens in this story. It is action packed, it’s thought provoking and lifts many societal and religious issues and traumas.

I am very much looking forward to the next installment of this book series!

I was hooked from start to finish.

This was a great setup for the next book. The entire time I felt like I was learning a lot and nothing at all. I could not predict any of what to come.

By the time I got to the end, I was thinking that it must be a trilogy or more. I think there’s still so much to explore and we have only made a small crack in the character development.

I love when worlds feel real and that’s how I felt about Absolphus. I found myself wondering what if Echo never went to the Academy, but the thought of living in that world without trying to do something about it feels claustrophobic.

I feel like this first book is just a basket of Easter eggs; yes some of the mysteries were solved, especially regarding their pasts because I was dying to know, but so many others opened up.

The Mortius twins? I feel like there’s something going on there.

The end?

Overall, it was a perfect setup for the next book.

According to how the story unfolded, you can tell that the author is very intentional with what she reveals and what she conceals, and every single item has a purpose.

Thanks to the author for the arc. I look forward to the second book

Representation matters and it was refreshing to read a fantasy book with characters that look like me. Now I will admit this book will have your full attention. Steeped in African Mythology and Religious undertones there is a lot that you must piece together.

Almost like a murder mystery we embark on a journey with the FMC to discover the nefarious intentions. Echo is a girl who possess the mark of a curse and that is a death sentence to anyone caught with it. Girls that re cursed with the mark are sent to Pleiades, the Academy of the Seven Orders which has ultimately led to many of the girl's deaths. Echo is convinced that The Doubler; a boy who is next in line to be the next Kardinal is responsible for the murders and when she is captured by him, she knows that it is a matter time before he tries to kil her.

Echo is a fighter and refuses to go down without a fight. As the academy tries to indoctrinate her into their ways and beliefs, they find that there is more fight in Echo than they realized.

This story took many windings turns and just when you think you have everything figured out; you soon realize you are yet wrong again. Can't wait to see what happens next.

I found this story so incredibly interesting.
There was something enthralling about the fantasy that explored the myths and culture of the Kulta in this book.
I find religious dysphoria interesting to read about but coming from the viewpoint of Echo it added an additional layer to the story. Echo doesn’t really have strong feelings about anything other than keeping Sy alive.

Pet was such a fantastic addition to the story. I loved how she just was, and was ok with being herself. There was no reason needed for her to be who she was.

The layers of plot that went into the story were fun to explore and peel apart to reveal the motivations and betrayals that were happening underneath.

This is by no means a perfect story but the level of enjoyment far exceeded any critiques and I’m very excited to see what this author does in the future.

Thank you for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book. This is my honest reaction.

I cannot thank the author enough for the eARC of the first book in the Pleiades Academies series. Despite being a YA novel, it’s timely and topical enough for all ages, particularly due to the religious and political elements. The blend of African mysticism and Catholicism, while incredibly well done, may not be for all readers. I urge everyone to consider how much religion plays a role in this novel, especially when it comes to colonization and control.

The African folklore goes beyond spirituality to include a robust caste system. Though it takes time to understand, it helps frame the power struggle at the center of the novel and explain where the large cast of characters fit into the narrative. Speaking of characters, this book features multiple POVs which are confusing at times. Still, each character gets their own moment in the sun, with some side characters outshine the rest (and I hope we see more of them in book two).

I have read all of the authors fantasy books, so you can say I am a bit of an expert when it comes to her writing; if Mages of Ruin City was anything to go by, she has set us up for a ride for book two.

I read another review that said she is intentional with everything she reveals or withholds and I must agree, I didn't see any of it coming and I can't wait for book two.

And as usual, she wrote some of the most fascinating characters, Tidaetheus (I don't know if I remember the spelling). I started off thinking who is this devil child to he better be okay?
Pet: I need a separate review to talk about all the feelings she invoked.

I feel like I should come back with the rest after book two since this is obviously a duet, and I hope it will be soon.

This one takes a little brain energy BUT it’s so worth it! I’ve been really intentional about wanting to expand out the types of mythology in my books and so this was a perfect opportunity to do so. This story is full of African mythology and so you can decide how deep into everything you get; I do end up down wormholes quite a bit, checking out the origins for the different rituals and beliefs. The world building felt a little intense HOWEVER the more you get into these characters stories and things start to unravel, the more grateful you are to have a thorough understanding of the power dynamics and the way things are set up.

One of the best parts about this story for me was feeling like I was piecing together a puzzle a little at a time, each different perspective giving me more. And just when I think I have it all figured out and I have an idea of what the bigger picture is BAM no I don't! It kept me invested. This is one I would recommend!

To Defy Angels was such a captivating book!
This is my first foray into books with themes of African mysticism and it absolutely did not disappoint. The worldbuilding and lore was very rich and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the world and the different cultures in the book.

The characters were the best part for me. A lot of the characters we read about are so layered and complex, and finding out about their motivations and secrets was what kept me turning the pages.
I love Pet! I love the unhinged-ness Mortius Twins!

The pacing and the plot were top-notch. The story unravels slowly and keeps the reader guessing with the twists that when you reach the end it feels so rewarding.

Thank you to the author for a copy of this book.

Dark academia fantasy with magic, mystery, secret/forgotten identities, lost memories!
Inspired by African Mythicism & Catholicism with dark themes. Proceed with caution if you have religious trauma but otherwise highly recommend!

My goodness! I want to live in Sonia's head, because how did she think all of this up? How did she build such an exquisite world with complex characters, fabulous world-building, and a robust belief system with all the intrigue of religious tension?
This is the first book, and I was so sad when one of my favourite characters died! I thought we would see more of him, even have him interact with Sy at some point, but it is what it is.
That cliffhanger at the end was wicked, but I can't wait for the next book in this series!

This is my first ARC and my first time writing a review, so I am not good at it.
But this is one of the most atmospheric books I have ever read, and the author did a good job of making me feel what Echo was feeling.
I also love that she did not deviate from her idea of revenge just to push the plot along.
I was scared that the romance might spring out of nowhere but this is a real slow burn. The setup is there but we are not rushing into it.

I’m so glad I had the chance to read To Defy Angels as an ARC. One of the things I loved most about this book is its representation—seeing characters who look like me, without their features being softened or altered to feel more “palatable,” was incredibly refreshing and meaningful.

This story is full of twists and turns, with characters whose lives are deeply intertwined—whether through history, fate, or each other. It blends fantasy, magic, witchcraft, and culture in a way that feels rich and immersive.

The narrative begins with a single point of view, but gradually and subtly introduces others. This shift allows the reader to piece together the bigger picture and better understand the world and its complexities. The pacing starts as a slow burn, carefully building the world, its religious and cultural foundations, and the characters themselves. Then, it accelerates quickly, pulling us into a whirlwind of revenge, death, destruction, and powerful cultural practices.

Overall, it’s an engaging and compelling read—and that ending? I’m absolutely desperate for book two.

Holy cow, what an ending. The character development was well done but I still feel like I have so many more questions rather than answers. The different beliefs were well thought out. Once I started reading, it was so hard to put down. I cannot wait to see what book 2 has in store.

I enjoyed this book so much. I have wanted to read more fantasy and with different sub-genres and this did it for me. I love how it had a bit of thriller vibes thrown in also. I need to know more about Echo, Sy and The Doubler and what comes next.

If you like dark academia, African mysticism, and some magical fantasy in your books or want to try something new, check this one out.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. 4.5 stars!

Advanced reader here: I very much enjoyed this book from the plot, to the characters and the word building. I love how the author has constructed such an impressive world but only gives us small puzzle pieces. I will definitely be continuing the series.
