Out on the edge of the Roman Empire, Maryam dreams of the world beyond her village, her solitude occasionally broken by a mysterious figure named Gabriel. But when Maryam’s father dies and leaves behind debts that his only child must pay in servitude, she is thrust into the heart of the treacherous royal court of King Herod the Great. Before long, a brutal act of jealousy and betrayal then leaves Maryam alone in a country simmering with unrest.

When she sets out to salvage her future, she is jarred by the discovery that she will soon become a mother. Maryam must decide to take her life into her own hands, and nothing — not a princess, not an empire, not even an angel — will stop her
from seeing her own will be done.

With luminous prose and page-turning storytelling, Marble gives voice to one of the most famous mothers, narrating an unforgettable and resounding story of feminine identity, strength, and choice.

This novel about Mary before the birth of Jesus is phenomenal. I was asked to blurb it, and I was truly and completely blown away. I wasn't expecting such a story! As I wrote in my blurb, Marble is the achingly beautiful story of Maryam, known later as the Virgin Mary, in the life she lived before she was the mother of Jesus. With poetic language and piercing imagery, Taylor Catalana vividly conjures king’s palaces, visions of angels, and life in Judea as the first century approaches. This riveting and provocative novel will challenge notions of a docile Mary, reimagining millennia-old stories from a fiery, feminist perspective.

This is novel is in the category of biblical retellings--in the vein of The Red Tent and The Liars' Gospel--for a wide audience. I knew only the biblical basics of the story of Mary, and yet this novel fleshes her out, bringing Maryam to life. The research behind Marble and the world building within it is extraordinary--I was truly immersed in Judea.

I'm absolutely proselytizing about this book (pun intended) and I can't recommend it enough. Would be fabulous for book clubs.

This book is a beautifully written feminist retelling of the Virgin Mary.

I’m not a very religious person, but I found this book totally fascinating. It’s focused on her life before she became a mother. Mary, or Maryam in this book, is such a deep character - her wants, desires, and fears are all so vivid. I also loved seeing how the time and the setting - right on the edge of the roman empire as the first century approaches during the reign of Herod the Great - shaped who Maryam is and how she perceives the world.

Overall, this book was a great historical fiction novel about a strong woman.

What an absolutely gorgeous book. This novel is historical fiction at its finest. I found myself wondering who in the story was “real”, what was “true”, and if any of that matters anyway. I was captivated from start to finish by the beautiful prose and quick pace— there is sincerely not a dull moment in this book. I’ll be thinking of this story, and of Maryam, for a long long time.

This is a must read for fans of the ancient world and strong, spunky women, whether or not you have biblical familiarity.

Taylor’s debut is a feat. Kudos.

With prose both earthy and elegant, Taylor Catalana describes Maryam's defiant struggle for independent thought and individual action. Marble, Catalana's stunning debut, gloriously reimagines the icon as a human, the symbol as a woman.

Taylor Catalana’s debut historical fiction account of a young Mary is poignant, lyrical and well worth a read by both religious and non religious readers.
