3,75⭐️ OKAY I’M SHOCKED. The way this started so slow but omg i had no idea it was a love triangle!!
The world is so so beautiful, it truly feels like a dream, this is unlike anything i have ever read. So unique!!!
I also get Cora because what do you mean you have two men hot for you, then you might as well have them both.
I have no idea which team i am on, Chase feels safe okay but adric i don’t know he intrigues me.

I was absolutely drawn into this book immediately. The dark academia vibes were immaculate!
I loved meeting Cora, Tia, Chase, Griff, and the whole gang. The premise of this book with dreamwalkers, witches, and kings from other realms was perfect.
On the other hand, I did have a tough time getting through this book. Although it’s not marketed as YA, Cora’s inner dialogue and response to, well, everything, was extremely immature. I also could not, for the life of me, get invested in these characters.
Unfortunately, I will not be continuing on with this series.

REALM OF DREAMS AND SHADOWS is the first instalment in J. Kenner’s new adult DREAMBOUND paranormal/ fantasy series focusing on nineteen year old, ST. AUGUSTINE college freshman Cora Lyte, a young woman whose lifelike dreams and nightmares will eventually end her life.

Told from first person perspective (Cora) and third person (Chase) REALM OF DREAMS AND SHADOWS follows college student Cora Lyte in her first few weeks of freshman year. The world building is complex and detailed, as eons of history is revealed as to the five realms; the how and why of the connection to our story line heroine, and her protector Chase. Cora, new to the world of magic and mayhem, is often too curious, and a little TSTL, but our heroine needs answers, and the answers are few and far between. Every night her nightmares pull her deeper, until she is no longer able to discern between the realms, between reality and her nightmares.
The relationship between Chase and Cora is predicated upon hundreds of years of history, dreams and nightmares but there is a love triangle developing, and in this, I am struggling to accept what is happening and why-the usual manipulation, secrets and lies is paramount to destroy any chance at a happily ever after, and our heroine is easily manipulated and gullible. The $ex scenes are passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The Hunter aka Gage ‘Chase’ Chasen ; Cora’s Roommate Tia, a witch whose powers have been bound; the school’s Dean, Cora’s Uncle Finn’; Adric, the Nightmare King, and bookstore owner Griffin, a practitioner of the occult, another hunter/ protector Whistler.

The premise for this was great, but it lost me when she finds out the guy she's boinking and she's angsty about it for two seconds and then she's all "but I love him!"

I feel like she has more resentment and anger towards her uncle who sent her to boarding school than her literal .
There are so, so, so many things in this book that gave me the ick:

Additionally, the chemistry between her and Adric felt entirely contrived and I simply cannot understand why the author would choose to do that. You know how parents always have a favorite kid (even if they swear they don't)? Yeah, I feel like Chase is the author's favorite love interest and it makes absolutely zero sense to me.
Also, can we talk about how Chase and Adric are the same? Both manipulating her to varying degrees of success because they both think they're right? I can't stand Chase's self righteousness when he's exactly the same as Adric, except arguably worse. Much worse.
Then, he's on his literal deathbed and they have sex? Like this man is actively dying, but sure, it's boink time. Nothing screams "sexy" to me like a man whose flesh is rotting off his body from a magical infection, but what do I know?
I think I would have actually like Cora if she owned a vibrator and didn't let her horny brain make all her decisions for her. Because what do you mean there's a secret society that claims they know everything and you think one of them might be your dad but you just...ignore them? What do you mean there's all these occult books that sound like they'd have some answers and you never even open them?
Let's not even mention the ridiculousness of a secret society full of middle aged folks hosting the most sought after frat parties? Like, they're not even a frat. Make it make sense.
Anyway, this book had a promising premise, but I simply cannot forgive how easily Cora got over . Like, that deserves at least a full book of New Moon level angst at a MINIMUM before forgiveness.

Inception meets romantasy.
In this epic fantasy, 19 year old Cora starts her college freshmen journey in picturesque in St. Augustine, Florida where the veil is thin. But mystical occurrences force her into completely different journey, where she uncovers the truth about her family’s generational illness, what exists outside of the human realm, and who the men she’s falling for really are. In this first book of the Dreambound series, the more answers she gets, the more questions that arise, leading back to the dawn of time and creation itself. If you’re fascinated by dreams, or loved the love triangle in TVD (and specifically the season where Elena goes to college), this is a great choice for you.

I didn’t personally love Cora's character - though her personality/voice is clear and consistent. She comes across and immature and reactive, and her internal monologue is very repetitive in the first half of the book, resulting in a pace that feels slow even though the actual plot pace is steady.
On that note - although age gaps between human teens & hundred year old beings are common in romantasy - her personality really highlights the significant age difference between her and the other love interests. It’s hard to get past that these two ancient men have loved her since she was a minor.
Once Cora begins to enter other realms, the focus turns from her internal monologue toward the world and the plot, so things pick up and it becomes captivating. Although I'm giving this a 3, the emotional impact of the thrilling plot and the romantic tension is more like a 4. The magic system is fascinating and unique, and the Nightmare Realm is a wonderfully odd combination of dark and serene.
This reads as one story told over multiple books (rather than a separate, concrete resolution in book one), and the cliffhanger is CRAZY, leaving you desperate for the next one. Thank you Oliver-Heber Books and J. Kenner for the free advanced copy!

I’m a dark romance reader, but I’m still pretty new to the romantasy genre, so I don’t have much to compare it to yet. Overall, I really enjoyed *Realm of Dreams and Shadows* by an author I hadn’t read before. The plot is compelling and fascinating, and I really liked the mix of romance and fantasy, the setting, the vivid imagery, the “Dark Academia” atmosphere, the magical lore, the mystery, and the love triangle. The pace was a bit slow at first but picked up significantly as the book progressed. The story is definitely gritty, suspenseful, action-packed, and full of magic, twists, and spice.
Cora left me feeling a bit torn: on the one hand, I could relate to her; on the other hand, I found her too naive, immature and impulsive, and she lacked emotional depth. I also don't want to choose between Chase and Adric just yet. I found both of them intriguing, but I have a soft spot for morally gray heroes.
Unfortunately, I found that they too lacked emotional depth, and at times the interactions between the three main characters felt a tad unnatural and rushed.
Since the book ends on a cliffhanger and I really liked the way the suspense built up, I'm still very interested to see what will happen in the sequel.

This book is the first in a new series trope for J Kenner. Those that have enjoyed her Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom young adult series will definitely like this more mature adult version. The FMC, Cora Lyte, is starting college at America's most haunted university, where her uncle is also the dean. I love her roommate, Tia, who is a witch unable to practice magic. Cora suffers from livid nightmares where monsters and shadows try to kill her, but she fortunately has a hero who swoops in on his dragon to save her each time. During one of her dream sequences, she also meets and is attracted to a dark villain who needs to claim her as his wife to break the spell that has bound him to the Nightmare Realm. Cora doesn't fully understand what's happening, but she's trying to piece fragments together based on a torn letter she found in the trash that her mother wrote but never gave her before she died suddenly. She's shocked when the nightmare monsters come to life and attack when she's awake, and she realizes her "dream hero" is the real-life guy, Chase, she's been attracted to on campus.
The author lays the groundwork as Cora starts to learn and understand that she's not an average college student who suffers from nightmares, but instead, her choices may determine whether the human world survives a potential apocolyptic takeover.

3.75 Stars:
Firstly, I would like to state that love the overall premise of this book. Dreams and their tie to our reality is always something I will love reading about and seeing all the different ways someone can use those ideas.
The book has "chosen one", hidden powers, different realms, love triangle brought on by prophecy?, a bit of a secret society and a real girl bestie with magic (albeit) suppressed.
The characters feel real. I like how when presented with something terrifying they aren't automatically like "oh, I can take that", but at the same time the allure of power when given is there. Cora is conflicted. She doesn't give in right away, but knows and understands that she absolutely wants to not feel powerless anymore which is uplifting.
I do have to say that I wanted to smack her for all the back and forth. As well as Chase for not telling her more when he should have, but it's also (again) real- his reaction.
And the tension between Cora and both men was great. She was definitely stronger than I would've been. I do wonder if their relationship will turn into something more- both of them and her- if it's possible without breaking the realm.
I am curious to see where this will go, especially after the reveal at the end of the last chapter and the epilogue.

The book has "chosen one", hidden powers, different realms, love triangle brought on by prophecy?, a bit of a secret society and a real girl bestie with magic (albeit) suppressed.
The characters feel real. I like how when presented with something terrifying they aren't automatically like "oh, I can take that", but at the same time the allure of power when given is there. Cora is conflicted. She doesn't give in right away, but knows and understands that she absolutely wants to not feel powerless anymore which is uplifting.
I do have to say that I wanted to smack her for all the back and forth. As well as Chase for not telling her more when he should have, but it's also (again) real- his reaction.
And the tension between Cora and both men was great. She was definitely stronger than I would've been. I do wonder if their relationship will turn into something more- both of them and her- if it's possible without breaking the realm.
I am curious to see where this will go, especially after the reveal at the end of the last chapter and the epilogue.
Overall, I enjoyed it. Want to read more.

In my opinion, it falls in the YA category, or maybe just Cora does.
Could be the way she reacted to certain events, some of her inner dialogues, and/or the way she processes things. I am not sure. I don't really like her. Though that could change as the series progresses and she grows.
Fantasy romance always has a bit of an age gap when you are talking humans in relationships with fantastical beings. However, the age gap really shows here
I did enjoy the world-building and the “assortment” of characters
Not sure who I am rooting for as of the end of this installment
The villains have a deliciousness to them :)

I really loved the story and the characters, and there was so much about this book that kept me emotionally invested. The dynamics of Tia and Cora, they have a friendship I think we’ve all dreamed of! Someone who stands by you no matter what, a soulmate in a sense. Cora was a little bit young for what I had expected, I’d seen this reviewed as a more mature character’d book and it didn’t really seem that way, saying that there’s no miscommunication trope so at least she’s mature enough there.
The storyline was fascinating, I’ve always been intrigued by the way dreams and nightmares may impact our current life and this book showed me exactly what could happen if it was all real.
That said, the pacing felt a little slow for me at times, and I occasionally found myself struggling to stay fully focused. I think this was partly due to the amount of build up. I can absolutely appreciate why it was included, and I know other readers will probably love that level of detail — it just slowed the flow a little for me personally.

In particular, the relationship with the uncle didn't feel entirely natural to me, and some of his language seemed out of character. I also struggled with how quickly the main character's new friend accepted and became completely invested in her dreams. Although this is a fantasy novel, that part of the story takes place in the real world, and I found the reaction a little hard to believe.

Unfortunately, while the concept was compelling, the execution didn’t quite deliver for me. I found myself wanting more depth in both the world-building and character development. Some plot points felt underexplored, making it difficult to fully connect with the characters or become emotionally invested in their journey. The pacing also felt uneven at times, which kept pulling me out of the story.
That said, I can absolutely appreciate the creativity behind the premise. There were flashes of a unique and imaginative world that showed a lot of potential, and I think readers who enjoy darker romantasy with atmospheric settings may still find elements to enjoy.

In this story, the author has developed different realms, and Cora is at the center of the chaos. Nightmares have plagued her family for generations, and when her mother is killed in one of her nightmares, it’s Cora’s turn to carry out this horrifying legacy. At the heart of the dreams is a Hunter and the Nightmare King, and the King wants Cora to be his bride so he can tear down the barriers between realms and control them all (there are 5 total), but the Hunter continually saves her in her dreams and when she meets Chase in real life, she knows that he’s the Hunter in her dreams. During this time, Cora goes to St. Augustine for college and meets Tia, the type of friend she’s never had before.
This book is very intricately detailed and as it went on, some questions were answered, but more popped up. And the whopper of a cliffhanger at the end was a doozy and since this is a new release, I don’t know when the 2nd book will be released. All-in-all, this book is a good beginning (and confusing at times) and it will be great to find the answers in the next book.

This was a nice read overall. I feel it should be marked as New Adult but I don't remember seeing that mentioned anywhere.
I feel like Cora is very much naive about the things that are going on, and also how people treat her. She's supposed to be this very powerful person, but she sometimes asks the stupidest things or is oblivious to things that are right in front of her. Her frontal cortex isn't developed enough yet to handle her interactions with Adric.
I do love the friendship she has with Tia. I would love to see how much more entwined with everything she becomes in the future. i didnt much like how childish the FMC was, it takes alot for me to DNF a book i have 992 read and 11 DNFS listed on good reads but i just couldnt with this one. i gave up after i read this ill pop the quote in... i dont know it just creeped me out you can make your own mind up...

A Realm of Dream and Shadows is book one in the Dreambound Series by J Kenner. In A Realm of Dream and Shadows you will find a mysterious, scary, adventure with a dreamy hunter & a King of Nightmares who both have an active role in our FMCs terrible vivid nightmares.
First of all I had fun with this read, the world is creative & the story kept me interested while I was reading it. I personally didn’t connect well with some of the characters, overall I would rate this a 3.5.
I think book one has set us up for more answers & adventure in book two. I look forward to seeing where J Kenner takes the series.

I had a really good time with the mystery in this book, even if the romance didn't completely work for me.

The nightmare sequences were creepy, atmospheric, and did a great job of making me empathize with Cora and the curse that's haunted the women in her family for generations. I loved trying to figure out who could be trusted, and the story kept introducing new twists and revelations that kept me theorizing throughout.
Unfortunately, the romance was the weakest part for me. I understood one character's feelings and motivations, but I never felt like Cora's side of the relationship was developed enough. She often seemed to fall in love because someone was attractive and kind to her, rather than because of a deeper emotional connection. As a result, the romance felt more "high school" than the emotionally layered romantasy I usually enjoy.
Cora was also a frustrating protagonist at times. Some of her choices—especially toward the end—felt immature, and I found myself rolling my eyes more than once.
The second half also lost a bit of focus for me. While I was always interested in what was happening, I wasn't always sure what the characters' overall objective actually was. There were also a handful of typos and some awkward phrasing that occasionally pulled me out of the story.
That said, I never wanted to stop reading. The world, the dream magic, and the mystery surrounding the prophecy kept me invested, and the ending definitely left me wanting to know what happens next.
If you enjoy romantasy with dream magic, prophecies, hidden agendas, and plenty of twists, this is worth checking out. I'll be reading book two to see where the story goes.

REALM OF DREAMS AND SHADOWS is the first book in J Kenner’s new series THE DREAMBOUND SERIES. Cora Lyte is cursed to die in her dreams like the women in her bloodline, caught between Chase, a Hunter who has sworn to protect her, and Adric the Nightmare King who claims her as his bride. This is a spicy, open door, first person, triple POV, dark paranormal romance with tropes such as cursed heroine, dual love interests, impossible choices, Nightmare Realm, forbidden desire, prophecy, power, and world ending stakes. I enjoyed this story about a college freshman who is traveling to the Realm of Nightmares in her dreams and the only people she can talk to about it are her new roommate, who is a witch, and Chase, a “graduate student” who makes appearances in her dreams. She finds herself torn between Chase and Adric, who is the King of Nightmares. The book is interesting and different than other novels I have read, though I was frustrated with Cora at the end. Fair warning, the book ends in a cliffhanger. I recommend this novel for readers who enjoy dark paranormal romance with love triangles.

This book was not for me, but it had potential. The premise of a creepy dream realm paired with a family curse, was very intriguing. However, the characters lacked depth and Their connections felt rushed making it quite boring to read at times. I genuinely loved the vibe of St. Augustine. I loved the school, her found family, the MMCs, the twists, and the turns.
The ending... be ready to fall off a cliff! I was floored!

At first I wasn't sure what i was reading but after starting it, it liked it. Cora is a college student who happens to have sleeping issues due to the fact she has nightmares which are so real you think you are in them. Her female side of the family is cursed like that. As she realizes the man she sees in her dreams/nightmares are real, she starts asking questions. Of course it is more complicated than anything with the Nightmare King a huge factor in this too. Turms out Cora has a thing for the Hunter and Nightmare King. It ends on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see what happens next.

I'm starting with the ending, because that cliffhanger. WOW. It caught me completely off guard. I enjoyed the premise of the book, the different realms and the dreaming was very interesting. We have two MMCs, not sure yet if it's a love triangle or why choose. The MMCs were both ancient beings, their backstory was really creative.
I found the writing felt more YA than adult. Part of this was due to the FMC and her friend being very immature, especially with their speech. Although they were 19 years old college students, I didn't feel like it elevated the book. If it wasn't for the spicy scenes, this book would certainly fit in the YA category. With the FMC feeling quite immature, it made the relationships with the MMCs feel quite unbalanced. They are ancient beings, and aside from the the one MMC who had obvious motives, it was hard to see what they saw in a 19 year old girl.
Rated four stars because I did enjoy the story, I just wish the writing was more towards the adult side.

First time reading a fantasy story from this author. Very cool concept in such an intriguing setting that hooked me from the beginning. I usually don’t read younger main characters but it works in fantasy books and in this story.
I love when it is hard to figure out who is good and who is bad as it is with the two MMCs, Chase and Adric. I like Cora the FMC very much and she certainly has her hands full with them.
Love me a cliffhanger, so now we wait for book 2.
