I went into this expecting a cute fake dating romance, but what I found was a story filled with anxiety, healing, and the vulnerability of letting yourself be seen.

Willa is the kind of character that stays with you. After years of being bullied throughout childhood and adolescence, she carries her anxiety and depression into adulthood, leaving her stuck in a life that no longer makes her happy. In her late twenties, she’s trapped in a job she hates and too afraid to chase the dreams she gave up on, until one impulsive lie changes everything. When her childhood best friend invites her to his wedding, she panics and says she’ll be bringing her boyfriend… except she doesn't have a boyfriend.

Enter Theodore Schmidt. Her former high school enemy and the last person she expected to find comfort in.

Theo offering to be her fake boyfriend should have been a complete disaster, but instead it became such a heartfelt slow-burn romance. What starts as enemies-to-lovers slowly turns into something tender and genuine. Theo isn’t the villain Willa (or we) believed him to be. Beneath all the tension and history is someone who truly sees her, even in her hardest moments. The way he constantly put her wellbeing first... love it!!

What stood out most to me was how realistically the book handled mental health. Willa’s anxiety wasn’t magically fixed by love. It was messy and isolating at times. Who can't relate to her overthinking, her fears, and the feeling of being left behind while everyone else seems to move forward so easily? The author handled those emotions with so much care.

And Theo… he was the perfect reminder that you are never “too much” to be loved.

Their relationship wasn’t about saving each other, but about growing together. Watching Willa slowly face her fears and realize there’s no age limit on chasing your dreams was one of my favorite parts of the story.

The fake dating tension? YES
The slow burn? Worth it.
The emotional depth? Here for it.

Thank you Ariana Aldine for entrusting me with this ARC - I'm excited to see what is next!

eng:

Willa, a girl who has suffered from anxiety and depression since childhood, had a rough time in school and during adolescence (she was bullied). Now, in her late twenties, she's working a job she dislikes, even though her dream job is something else entirely, but she doesn't dare pursue it. Everything changes when her best friend sends her his wedding invitation, and she says she has a boyfriend and will go with him (problem #1!!!).

Willa has a favorite restaurant in town, and to her surprise, the owner is her old enemy from school, who proposes they go to the wedding together (problem #2!!!).

Theo, who liked Willa since he went to school with her, didn't know how to get her attention and behaved a bit badly towards her. He needs this opportunity to show her he's changed, and if he's lucky, spending time together might just make Willa fall in love with him.

• I liked that it deals with important issues (anxiety, depression...) since these are rarely seen in books, nor do they usually show how these issues affect the characters.

----------------

esp:

I’m so grateful to have received an ARC of Sweet, Bitter Life because this story honestly surprised me in the best way.

At first, I thought I was just getting into a fun fake-dating trope (which I already love), but it turned into something so much deeper. The story follows a girl who agrees to be in a fake relationship with the guy she once thought hurt her—all because their mutual friend is getting married and she’s expected to bring a boyfriend. What she didn’t expect? That the same guy who once hurt her would grow into someone completely different as an adult.

I really appreciated how their dynamic developed. It wasn’t an instant “he’s suddenly perfect” situation. The author took time to show his growth, his maturity, and the way he slowly proved himself through actions. The small details—him noticing her efforts, remembering little things about her, and genuinely seeing her—made the romance feel soft and real. Their fake relationship slowly turning into something genuine felt natural and earned.

What stood out to me the most, though, was how the author handled mental health. It wasn’t romanticized or brushed aside. The struggles felt honest and vulnerable. I loved how the story emphasized the importance of having someone who listens—someone who doesn’t try to fix you immediately but chooses to stay, understand, and support you. It was a beautiful reminder that love isn’t just grand gestures; sometimes it’s about being present when life feels heavy.

For a debut novel, this was such a strong and heartfelt story. It didn’t just focus on romance—it explored growth, healing, forgiveness, and the reality that life can be both sweet and bitter at the same time. And maybe that’s what made it even more meaningful.

Overall, I truly enjoyed this read. It gave me butterflies, made me reflect, and left me feeling hopeful. I can’t wait to see what the author writes next.

ARC Review

Now in her late 20s, Willa, who had a tough time (bullied) during childhood to adolescence, still suffers from anxiety and depression. The need to face persistent fear caused her to become stagnant in her career and in life. Until her bestfriend from childhood calls her to say he's getting married. Panicked, she tells him she's going with her "non-existent" boyfriend. Then she unexpectedly met Theo, her archnemesis from highschool, who is also friends with her bestfriend and proposes to become her "boyfriend" during the wedding.

From the moment i saw the blurb and its tropes, i knew i'm gonna enjoy this. Fake dating, slow burn and enemies to friends to lovers are just right up my alley and this really delivered. Although this is a romcom, it also touches sensitive topics like anxiety, depression and even bullying or cheating. Willa, as a character, truly hits home. She represents how a mind with anxiety really works. Although not diagnosed, i still feel anxious every now and then and i relate so much to her. The author really took time to portray it well through Willa and even in Theo, the perfect representation of "I see you, you are not alone." What i love the most here is the growth of both main characters. How Willa overcame all obstacles facing her way while also dealing with her mental illness. How Theo, who always finds the time to show Willa he's changed and it really showed in the end. I also love that the fmc is a movie buff and she got what she truly wanted in the end.

This novel tells us that there's no expiration date to success and you are never too old to start something new. If you're too scared, do it scared anyway.

Thank you so much to Ariana for giving me this opportunity to read this as an ARC. This was such a fun and easy read. It gave me butterflies, it made me reflect. Amazing debut novel. Looking forward to read your next release!

How do you trust love when life has already taught you to expect disappointment?

Sweet, Bitter Life was exactly that, sweet in the quiet moments, bitter in the ones that hurt the most, and honest all throughout.

I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this story before, and getting to read it again as an ARC made the experience even more special. Watching it grow into what it is now made me appreciate it even more.

Willa and Theo were definitely the heart of this book. Their story had that kind of emotional tension that feels soft but heavy at the same time. Willa carries so much anxiety, grief, and self-doubt, and I really appreciated how raw and realistic that felt. It never felt exaggerated, just honest. Her thoughts, her hesitation, and the way she kept herself guarded felt so believable.

And Theo… he was the kind of character who shows love quietly but consistently. You can feel how much he cared for Willa long before she allowed herself to fully see it. He was patient, supportive, and that silent yearning made everything hit harder. Their dynamic carried that perfect mix of history, tension, and emotional slow burn that made me want to keep turning pages.

I also loved the tropes here. Fake dating, enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, and forced proximity all worked so well together. The romance was slow and steady, but it never felt dragged out. It felt earned.

What stood out most, though, was Willa’s growth. Watching her slowly choose herself, face the things that scared her, and allow herself to want more from life was probably my favorite part of the book. It reminded me that growth rarely looks big and dramatic—sometimes it’s just choosing not to stay stuck.

This was such a warm and memorable read for me. It gave me that soft, reflective feeling after finishing—the kind where you just sit there for a while thinking about the characters.

Thanks to the author for trusting me with this story. I’m really grateful I got to experience it first as a beta reader and now as an ARC reader.

Thank you to the author for the eARC of this book!!✨️

Sweet Bitter Life is the perfect title for this novel. It follows Willa, a woman in her late 20s trying to reshape her life. Life has been hard on her but, throughout the story, she decides to follow her dreams and find the sweet parts among the bitter ones. Through this journey, she reconnects with her high school nemesis, Theo, who's not nearly as bad as she remembers. Theo and Willa are both invited to a wedding and neither wants to go alone so they struck a fake dating deal (of course). However, this is not your typical fake dating rom com. While there are funny and swoony moments, the novel go focuses on sad realities of lives and Willa's mental health journey with anxiety, grief, and the scars of bullying. Willa and Theo slowly learn to lean on and confide in each other about their past and create space in their lives for one another. My favorite part was how real their relationship and their struggles felt.

Personally I enjoy lighter, more banter filled romances (even if I'll say there were some really swoony scenes between them) but I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy softer romances that feel almost slice of life at times. Theo is perfect for fans of Ali Hazelwood's men, totally obsessed from the start in a quiet but unmovable way. Willa was a difficult character for me to follow, sometimes hard for me to relate too but one thing we had in common is feeling like your 30s are closing on you and you're nowhere near where you expected to be by this point. I loved seeing her overcome the pressures that come with this. It might not have been my perfect romance but I can see how a lot of people will appreciate the steady presence and love Theo shows Willa throughout the book, the anxiety representation, and the discussions on loss and grief that I believe the author took great care in depicting.

Sweet, bitter life - Ariana Aldine 🩷

4,5/5

First of all, a huge thank you to the author for the ARC 🫶

I really loved the book’s universe, and especially the characters!!

I thought that when I opened the book I would find a cute fake dating romance, but I was genuinely surprised to discover a romance with a very psychological aspect (which I adore)!!

After being bullied at school, Willa lives with anxiety and depression, not to mention that she has a job she completely hates. But when her best friend invites her to his wedding, Willa sees it as a sign that it’s time to live life on her own terms!!
When Theo suggests she play the role of his fake girlfriend at the wedding, she decides to accept despite the hatred she feels for him 👀

Having gone through a rough period of anxiety in high school, I related to Willa so much and ugh, it was hard, and this book just showed me how much anxiety can ruin our lives and stop us from taking risks… I loved her vulnerability and sensitivity 🤧🤧❤️‍🩹

As for Theodore Schmidt, from the start I knew he wasn’t the villain we thought he was. He’s such a green flag, even when she hated him with all her heart, he was there, putting her well-being first 🥹🥹

This book is also about questioning our own lives: at what age is it too late to stop chasing our dreams? Sweet Bitter Life proves that there’s no age limit, and our dreams are worth living no matter how old we are 🫶

I might have liked the wedding to happen a bit sooner in the story, but otherwise I really enjoyed my read 🤧🤧🤧

Vulnerably raw and heartwarming.

I’m a sucker for tropes like fake dating and enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, so when I read the blurb, I knew I was going to love this.

The slow-burn romance really built up nicely—slowly but surely. I really felt for Willa and her doubts about Theo, but I’m so glad with how their relationship progressed. Theo is such a sweetheart. He’s so supportive of Willa, and the fact that he’s been a silent admirer for years is the icing on the cake. This absolute yearner has definitely made it into my top 10 book boyfriends.

This debut novel isn’t all that sweet—it also tackles trauma, grief, anxiety, and depression. Willa’s thoughts and emotions are portrayed so well that I couldn’t help but feel emotional while reading her passages. I especially felt connected to her because of her chronic overthinking. I tend to overthink and second-guess things too, so I can only imagine what Willa goes through experiencing it so often.

Lastly, I find it really inspiring how Willa’s perspective changed. I’m so happy that she took a risk and chased her dream. She had a lot of worries and almost bailed on the idea, but she eventually pushed through. It made me feel hopeful and believe that things will work out in the end.

Thank you so much to the author for my copy!

ARC REVIEW!

This book was EVERYTHING!

The story is about Willa who had a lot of childhood trauma and how she navigates it in adulthood. There’s also Theo (❤️) who was also part of her past and is now back in her life.

I really loved how Willa’s vulnerability grew throughout the story and how she advocates for herself and her mental health journey in her adulthood. It was nice to see how she recognized her struggles but was still working on them with every new obstacle that came at her.

Theo, my new fav book boyfriend: I was questioning his motive a lot in the beginning but omg he is a sweetie. His second chance comeback was one of patience and learning. He let Willa take her time and didn’t push her limits.

The last 15% of the book was exactly what I hoped for and I’m happy to see Willa get her happy!

The book was so easy to read and flowed really nicely! I could’ve definitely finished this book in one sitting but the beach and pools got in the way lol

Thank you to Ariana for letting me read this as an ARC 💖 I’m truly impressed by how fun this book was and how easy it was to read. And as a debut novel? Crazy! I can’t wait to read your next release!

This one was so sweet and so much fun!! Thank you Ariana for allowing me to arc read your baby! 🥹🥰

These characters felt so real and relatable. The story was such a wonderful display of real and raw things that many people deal with while also easily including such a slow, healing, heartfelt romance.

I went on such a rollercoaster with Willa and Theo and loved their journey. While I don’t suffer from anxiety/depression to the severity Willa does, I found myself understanding a lot of what she was going through and relating to many thoughts she had as she was going into her 30s.

Seeing Willa grow throughout book was the sweetest thing and I just wanted to jump in and hug her and hype her up!! I felt so proud of her in so many moments.

And Theo?? Well it was so obvious how much he cared for Willa for so long. He had me in all my feels as we saw everything he did throughout the years slowly be revealed. He protected her in so many ways that she wasn’t aware of.

I enjoyed this book so much and it left me feeling all warm and fuzzy by the end.

💕🧑‍🍳 ARC Review of Sweet, Bitter Life by Ariana Aldine 🧑‍🍳💕

This book was such a sweet read. I really enjoyed the emotional depth woven into the story, especially the mental health representation and the thoughtful way childhood bullying was handled. I loved how the book showed that the impact of those experiences can stay with someone for years, shaping the way they see themselves and the world around them 🫂

The romance was such a satisfying slow burn 🔥 I adored the way he slowly and steadily showed her that he was there for her, without pushing or forcing anything. Their relationship developed so naturally, and it made every little moment between them feel meaningful 💕

Fake dating is one of my favorite tropes, so this book was already a win for me from the start 😏 But what made me love it even more was watching her grow into herself throughout the story - learning to take chances on herself, follow her dreams, and stop asking permission to live the life she truly wanted 🫶

This book is for you if you like:
💍 Fake dating
🔥 Slow burn
🏡 Forced proximity
🧠 Mental health rep
💞 Enemies to friends to lovers

Thank you so much to @arianaaldinewrites for the ARC copy of Sweet, Bitter Life 🫶

I was fortunate enough to be a beta reader for Ariana & I am so happy that I was because I absolutely loved this book. This is a beautifully written story about a woman named Willa who has had some trauma in the past, so she doesn't trust easily. She's also a bit reserved. But when someone from her past, Theo, comes back into her life & asks for help, things begin to change & she starts to question everything.

I just loved Willa & Theo together. The connection between them is adorable & full of banter. They perfectly balanced each other out. They brought something out in one another & helped each other in ways the other may not have realized until much later.

I can't wait to see what else Ariana has in store. & I can't wait to read more of her work.

“Someone once told me that life isn’t about avoiding fear, but about facing it”

A big thank you to Ariana for sending me her ARC. This book was a lovely slow burn where the characters, especially Willa showed raw emotions. Willa who struggles with crippling anxiety, depression and second guesses everything navigates her way through a new lease of life with the help of her childhood arch nemesis, who turns out not to be so bad.

This was a heartfelt story & displayed real daily struggles that people go through & also a new beginning, delving into bullying, heartbreak & first time relationships. A truly lovely read.

such a great debut from this author!

Sweet, Bitter Life was such an emotional comfort read with just the right amount of angst. I really loved the balance between tender romance and heavier emotional themes…it made the relationship feel authentic instead of overly perfect. The slow-burn connection between the main characters kept me invested, and their conversations had a natural chemistry that made the quieter moments stand out just as much as the bigger emotional scenes.

The writing style felt approachable and heartfelt, and the cozy café/coffee-shop atmosphere added a warm charm throughout the story. I especially appreciated how the book explored vulnerability, grief, and learning to trust again without losing the romantic feel readers want from the genre.

The pacing dragged slightly for me in the middle, which is the main reason this landed at 4 stars instead of 5, but overall it was a really satisfying, emotional romance with lovable characters and plenty of heartfelt moments. Perfect for readers who enjoy emotional contemporary romances with sweetness, tension, and healing journeys.

Bullied and suffering from anxiety and depression and stuck in her career and life until she needs a 'boyfriend' to attend her childhood best friends wedding

Fake dating, slow burn, enemies to lovers and a rom com... we get it all but it also deals well with harder hitting issues and the characters develop and grow well

This book was incredibly moving. Willa’s story broke my heart, as it tackles heavier themes like bullying, depression, and anxiety in a very respectful and understanding way by the author.Willa is a true inspiration. Even though life wasn't easy on her, she managed to overcome it all and achieve her dreams. She is the living proof that, even if we have a family environment full of love and affection, we can still fall victim to depression and anxiety.Theo has been an absolute sweetheart since they were kids. He always tried to do what was best for Willa and continues to do so. I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for the next one!

This is an ARC review, as sent by the author herself, and I wanted to take a moment to thank Ariana for sharing her work with me. This was the first ARC I ever received, it is your first book and we are both not native English speakers so it felt like serendipity and I definitely took that into consideration when writing this review.

Sweet, Bitter Life feels a lot like its title. It is both sweet and bitter, as reflected by its female main character. Willa is a complicated woman, to put it mildly. To the point where it got me a while to get into her headspace – and even now, there are some things about her that unnerve me, which is the reason this book is only a 3.5 star. However, she is real. Her struggles really did hit home in ways I did not expect. Her growing up was, indeed, a lot more filled with tragedies than mine, but otherwise? Bullying? Check. Not good at making friends? Check. Being on the edge of turning thirty and feeling like you're absolutely lost? Check and check. But watching as she did the work to do better and grow as a person? That was a lovely journey.

The best part of this book, however, is Theo. What a man, ladies, gentlemen and nonbinary folks. Surely, a man written by a woman, but what a man. He is incredible and his patience and willingness to do better was the best part of this book. We love seeing a man own up to his flaws and try to do better. Did I wish we had gotten more of him and his POV? Yes, but I was content with what I got.

This book is definitely a good coming of age story, even if those are usually about people becoming adults, but I feel like as I approach the big thirty? This is exactly what I needed. Thank you again, Ariana, for the opportunity to review your debut book and I cannot wait to see what else you put out in the world!

Sweet Bitter Life by Ariana Aldine is a soft, slow-burning story that becomes unexpectedly emotional. It follows Willa, a 30-year-old who feels stuck in life, with her anxiety and depression portrayed in a quiet, deeply relatable way. When her best friend’s wedding pushes her to a scenario she didn’t anticipate, she ends up fake-dating her high school nemesis, adding both tension and charm.
Blending romance with self-discovery, the story focuses on Willa’s journey toward healing and growth. It’s introspective, bittersweet, and perfect for anyone who’s ever felt lost, reminding us that change, and even love, can come from the most unexpected places.

Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book. Enjoyed it very much!
