Perfect Mind: Perfect Ride

Rate this book
Possessing the right mind-set and relevant mental skills has long been considered vital in achieving top performances in all sports. Yet, to so many riders, mental fitness still remains something of an afterthought. In Perfect Mind: Perfect Ride, the author demonstrates how to develop and achieve the right kind of attitude, motivation and mental skills to make the most of the rider's abilities whether it be riding as a recreation or competitive sport.

Horses are highly sensitive flight animals - they'll react first and ask questions, well, never! In essence, this means that every time riders get on their horse, they need to be fully committed, aware and in control of their body, their thoughts and their emotions, in order to communicate with their horse in precisely the right kind of manner.

The combination of research in the field of sport and performance psychology and real-life examples contained in this book will help readers identify with and understand different topics. Current scientific theories surrounding sport and performance are translated into practice, allowing readers to fully understand why they think, feel, and act the way that they do - and what they need to do to change it.

Hello,

I guess you might call me a bit of a chameleon: there's my "serious" researcher/sport psychologist side. With that I write articles, blogs and books relating to horse sports. Then, there's my (hopefully) creative side, which I use to write fantasy fiction for children! Apparently, I'm unable to write books that don't have horses in them, so my fantasy novel features magical seahorses. Lastly, I enjoy reading - and reading between the lines. The result is my blog.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I felt it was educational and informative about the sports psychology behind riding.
The book is informative in the most part, yet at times I felt the pace was a little quick and that some important aspects were skimmed past. I personally find this with many books though, as I generally prefer in depth books. However, I would have liked aspects such as visualisation covered in a bit more depth.
I would say this book is a very well-rounded introduction into sports psychology as a whole. It is written in simple language and would say that for someone who has not read much about this topic before, it would still be accessible. However, if you are interested in the details of sports psychology this book may not be the one for you.
It is important to note that this book does explain how to deal with things such as competition nerves, but has less about the why you actually get those nerves. Personally, I would have enjoyed parts about the ‘why’ and less about ‘how to deal’ with them.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to dip their toe into sports psychology. It is informative, and despite some of its let-downs, I did really enjoy it.

Got this for Christmas and just got around to reading it, I've only just started competing so when I read the first quote about competing and drawing comparisons to some of the top riders I was a bit dubious as to how useful this would be but there's a lot of interesting psychology that is very applicable to every level. Don't read it expecting a 'how to ride guide' though, as the title implies this is very much focused on the mental aspect to competing.
