Two federal agents must crack the secrets hidden deep in the bayou…
Undercover agent Zach Winter vows to expose the truth behind his best friend's death and protect the pregnant widow left behind. But his de facto partner, Maddy Tierney, isn't the average federal-agent-turned-bodyguard—she's too beautiful, too capable and too damn tempting. It isn't until he rescues her from a kidnapping attempt that their relationship goes from uneasy to explosive. With the criminals closing in and time running out, Zach knows he'd put his own life on the line in order to protect a vulnerable widow. And to ensure the safety of the woman he can't imagine saying goodbye to.

Good book, and a little different than most undercover agent books that I've read. Zach has returned to his hometown for the first time since he was fifteen, in order to attend his best friend's funeral. When he arrives he discovers that not everything is as straightforward as he thought. The woman who the town thinks is a friend of the widow Sandy, is actually an undercover DHS agent, there to protect Sandy. Tristan wasn't just an oil rig worker, he was also an undercover DHS agent and there are questions about his death - not the least of which is where is his body. No one else knows that the coffin is empty.
The initial meeting between Zach and Maddy was very interesting. Each of them recognized that there was something different about the other, and initially didn't trust them. Once they realized they were on the same team things became a bit easier. Maddy had been sent there for a reason and was determined to protect Sandy and find out the truth of what was happening. Zach is there for purely personal reasons, but becomes intent on finding the truth. I found it very interesting that both are novice agents, not the superagents that usually appear in these books. Both are a little insecure about their own abilities, but find that together they are great. They also are intensely attracted to each other and have to fight it because of the distraction that happens because of it.
The suspense is quite good as they try to unravel the clues they found. It was also interesting to see how each of them treated the information they got, especially their individual encounters with Boudreau. Things got really intense at the end with the final confrontation with the bad guy. I also enjoyed the realism of the showdown and the effects that Maddy's capture had on her ability to help. There are still questions that need to be answered about Tristan's death. I have some suspicions about that and I'm looking forward to the next book to see if I'm right.
Free book on Goodreads. This book was easy to read but sometimes the story bugged me. The little things, Maddy was making eggs, then 2 paragraphs later Sandy is sitting with eggs in front of her and they are getting cold. When did they make it to a plate?! Like I said, little things. The cell phone issue in the house, I swear Zach made a phone call at the picnic table then the next day said he could only get service in the nursery. I didn't like the progression at the end. I didn't really feel the connection that Maddy and Zach had, not to the extent they were describing in the book. I'm not sure if this book just needed more words for me or what. (It only has 217 pages) I am not sure I followed and understood the crime playing out in the end either. Again, maybe more words, or at least more concise wording. I am curious about Sandy's husband, Tristan, is he still alive? I kind of liked the list of characters in the beginning but I think it distracted me.
Under Suspicion book1 in the Bayou Bonne Chance Series by: Mallory Kane is a very good read. And trying to understand what really happened to your best friend and what is happening now that threatens the life of your best friends wife and her baby and the girl you are fulling in love with.
Zach and Maddy's story is a fast paced, thrill ride. Full of twists and surprises. Amazing characters and a wonderful storyline. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!!!
I really enjoyed the plot of this story, and the suspense. The cast of characters were really good.
Zach returns to his hometown for the first time since he was just a teen, to attend his best friends funeral. He quickly finds out not everything is as it seems. He suspects that his best friend's death was not a accident. Zach also finds out his best friend's wife is pregnant. She has a friend living with her, and helping her out. To his surprise Sandy is not just a friend. I loved it when Zach, and Sandy found out at the same time that they were both agents, and knew how to shoot, and protect. I loved the chemistry and spark between Sandy, and Zach. The book moved fast, so there was wasn't a lot of time for romance. It is true under stressful situations intense feelings and love can blossom. That was the case with this couple.
The story was interesting as Sandy, and Zach worked together to unravel the case. I enjoyed the build up to the end. The ending was very intense. It was written in great detail, and didn't just end. I hate those books that lead you up to a point, then boom, what it was leading you up to ends in one short chapter. That was not the case at all. Loved this book from cover to cover.
"This is a great start to what looks to be an exciting series with an intriguing backdrop. The humidity in the Louisiana bayou might be high, but the heat between the leads is scorching" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).
Dnf. These two just kept doing such stupid things, like chasing off an intruder and instead of checking to see what the intruder did in the house, they immediately have the best sex of their lives after knowing each other for about a day. I couldn’t continue
