Society for Supper

Rate this book
“There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy”
—Alfred Henry Lewis

It is that prevailing premise, which has spawned this story.
A drought swept over much of the planet and food supplies were hit hard. The riots which started breaking out and the violence which ensued were only the start, as chaos began tearing away at the very fabric of society.
Ben Donnelly, a former S.W.A.T. officer with the Boston police force, is in the fight of his life and will do anything to protect his family from the storm of inhumanity.

This story follows the Donnellys in their fight to survive in a dystopian aftermath.
The life they knew was ripped away; they learn, all too quickly, how we are all part of a precariously balanced community, and when the balance is lost--society is devoured by the chaos of desperation.

SOCIETY for SUPPER is a suspense, thriller, dystopian adventure novel, which is 65,000 words in length.

Buckle-up for this adventure and come follow Ben Donnelly and his family as they try to survive this new hell.

This is a fun action adventure set in the near future when the world has a terrible food shortage and as a result society is falling apart. Ben and his family initially are able to barricade their home and fight off criminals looking to steal food. However, they decide to set off on a journey to find greater security at a camp protected by soldiers. The main part of the story is about their journey and the people they encounter, some good but mostly violent and after their food supplies.
The action is non stop and the background of a crumbling society provides an interesting commentary on mankind and the desperate lengths people will go to in order to try and survive.
This is a real page turner and I look forward to reading more by this author.

Ben Donnelly, an ex-cop, must save his family from famine and a society gone mad. There had been some indications of an impending threat in the United States that Ben had noticed. He stocked up on food and supplies for his family. But he didn't predict how desperate and deadly people become when they are starving to death. His wife, two daughters, Melissa and Dylan, and the older daughter's fiancee, Matt, are able to protect themselves with guns. They fight off gangs of people who attack their house until it's fire-bombed. They have to flee by car.
They pick up people along the way. Some are good and some bad. One turns out to be a murderer. They face road blocks and witness cannibalism. The government facility they want to get into turns them away. They later hear that the government camps are death camps. The government is rumored to be behind the looting and fires. They don't know where to turn.
In the sewers of Chicago, they find help with the Almighties, one of the rival gangs running the city. They face many near-death experiences.
The author is able to convey the desperation of the Donnelly family as they fight their way through the country. They help the lost along their way. They keep their humanity while many do not. They are survivors.

This book was amazing. It was very well done and it kept me wanting more. The topic and plot were unique and kept me guessing. There were plenty of ups and downs. I definitely would recommend this book. The author TyCobbsTeeth has an intriguing writing style. I was drawn right into the story and felt as if I was a part of the Donnelly family.

What would you do if the end of the world arrives?

Do you like dystopian novels such as The Road, The Walking Dead, Y:The Last Man? If so, you are in luck because this is the book you were looking for.

First, I would like to congratulate the author because the way he writes. His writing is very direct, intense and professional. Second, the story is as great as Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, for real.

In Society for Supper the world is dying because a severe and worldwide drought. As you can imagine then, food is scarce and people will do everything – trust me when I say “everything” – to survive.

The book tells you the story of Ben Donnelly and his family, a normal family that will have to work together and support each other so that they can survive the inhospitable place that has become America. I liked very much the characters that Ben and his family met during this running adventure…not all of them are how you believe they are at first sight…and I said enough…

The chapters that I liked the most were the ones related to the woods…some parts gave me goose bumps. A totally must have and hoping the author to continue the story with a second part.

A heart pounding adventure full of action, suspense, and chilling human behavior. I literally had goosebumps.

Society for Supper describes our near future where a drought has caused major food shortages throughout the world. When the ‘implausible’ happens and it spreads to North America most are left panicked and unprepared. A good majority of people adopt a brutal kill or be killed mentality that deeply affects the daring Donnelly family. They are eventually forced from their home by looters who progressively become more violent, beginning a dangerous journey for safety.

The writing style is both professional and natural, allowing the story to seamlessly flow. The imagery is vivid, effortless, and descriptive, immersing the audience in a chilling, intense world. I would classify this as a true horror story because unlike vampires and ghouls this is a very possible, terrifying concept.

I would highly recommend to anyone looking for excitement and adventure with a sprinkling of terror. I will definitely read more from this author.

Awesome read! This wasn't your typical dystopian 'lone female/male surviving against all odds' book. This following a man and his family as they struggle for their lives in an America which has fallen into chaos.

TyCoobsTeeth has created a story with great flow which carries an authentic feel - not always easy in this genre.

The only quibble I had was that sometimes the emotion of the family didn't match with what I expected. For instance, they seemed to practical and grounded after killing, and were occasionally joking and laughing in the next sentence.

I didn't want to put this novel down. In fact, I looked up a couple of times, surprised to see I had read for so long. I look forward to seeing where Ben and the family end up in the next instalment to Society for Supper.

Favourite quote: Ben had heard the expression, "We are only nine meals from anarchy", but he had not given it much thought, until six months ago.

Being a lover of apocalypse type movies, this book immediately drew me in. This book was amazing! It was very well written and kept me hooked until the end. Along the way, I kept saying to myself, "this would make an amazing movie or TV series", a la The Walking Dead. The Donnelly family is a family that you can really relate to as they do all that they can to fight for their survival. And, along the way, they make some good choices and some not so good ones. This was an action packed novel that kept me turning the page to see what happens next. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the apocalyptic genre.

Excellent book, well written.
I'm a power-reader/skimmer and I normally read books quickly, but I literally could not put this one down.
This is a powerful story that could most definitely occur, which makes it terrifying and compelling.
The characters are very well developed and the scenes are depicted vividly. I was pulled into action right away and barely had time to catch my breath during small breaks in the excitement. The plot and subplot are revealed slowly and there are twists and turns along the way.
When I reached the end, I found myself wanting more!

I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys; action-adventure novels, suspense novels, thriller novels, dystopian novels and the like.

A global food shortage has hit North America, and with it comes the inevitable disintegration of society. Some people follow the orders of the authorities, not out of trust so much as a desire to take the ‘less worse option’. Others fall to marauding and pillaging – and there are also a few brave souls who instead decide to strike out for themselves...

Ben, a ‘prepper’, and his similarly resilient family to whom he has given some training in survival skills, would seem to have a better chance than most at the grim business of simply staying alive. But being off the grid as they are, and with only a worm’s-eye-view of world-changing events, they usually find themselves tossed around at the mercy of the storm.

The relentless banter of the characters does seem out of place at first, before you realise it for what it is - a coping device. Ben’s family have already lost the framework around which their daily routines are structured, and having seen so many people die, their morale is low and their outlook is bleak. All they have left is each other.

There’s no easy resolution, and this is no ‘cosy catastrophe’. But if you enjoy post-apocalyptic tales, and (like me) are fed up with zombies, I can easily recommend this.

Society for Supper introduces you to the Donnelly family. The shortage of supplies changes the world they once knew. Where there used to be security, there is now the struggle to survive.

With Society for Supper, TyCobbsTeeth has created a thrilling end time scenario. Society for Supper is a gripping read with believable characters - some likeable, some not. The reader gets some insight into human behaviour in times of crises; often unanticipated character traits come to light. TyCobbsTeeth lets us participate in the Donnelly family's fight for survival, keeping our senses on alert. The story is fast-paced, kept me in its grip - I just had to know that 'my' family was all right. I was drawn into the story, nearly too close for comfort. Society for Supper is a good read not only for end time thriller fans, if you are interested in human behaviour, respect nature and abhor throw-away mentality - this will provide you with food for thought.

This is a thrilling read; beware - you can't help getting involved.

First of all the title engaged my attention. That being said, Society for Supper reveals the inner strength of humanity and its endurance when its pushed beyond its limits. Also it weaknesses when its broken down to its bare animalistic nature.
We are civilized animals doing uncivilized things.

There is still civility beyond the chaos, sacrifice and courage but above all else the power of human nature and its willingness to grow and evolve through something so epic, gut wrenching and traumatic and yet still maintain even some modicum of humanity. It expresses the systematic breakdown of humanity and of society to the point of no return. Ben is not only fighting to rescue his family but, also fighting in the struggle to maintain his own humanity. The author breaks down the true character of an individual and also the true nature of a dismal community.

This adventure-thriller starts on the eastern seaboard of the United States in a small coastal community. A global food shortage has wreaked havoc on the world and its boney fingers have just started to grip the US. Life for Ben Donnelly and his family unravels quickly--and violently.

I liked how this book starts fast and keeps a quick pace; it's one of my favorite things about a good read. The author does a superb job of gradual character development and his ability to portray scenes allows your mind to fully experience the setting and environment. I was taken on a trip through a spectrum of feelings during the spectacular rollercoaster ride. I made connections with characters and would love to follow them in another adventure.

This book keeps you guessing; I did not know where things were going or what was around the next corner. The action ebbs and flows just enough to catch your breath and there are some plot twists.

I really enjoyed it and I recommend this book very highly.

A thrilling story that pulled me in right from the beginning! The rich atmospheric writing made me feel like I was travelling right along with the Donnelly family as they struggle to survive in the aftermath of this global issue. "We are only nine meals from anarchy.". Indeed! Many times I wondered what I would do, and if I would have the courage to fight through a global food shortage. It scared me a bit, but I really got engrossed in the Donnelly's story. The characters were well-written and the the main characters likeable. I particularly liked Claude, who added some comic relief to an otherwise stressful situation. The end of the book left me wanting more and I would definitely recommend this book if you want a fast and exciting read. I also plan to read "Breakfast Is Served" which is another book by this same author.

Finally found time to finish this book. Amazing! I thought I had a few things figured out about the storyline but my assumptions were wrong and I'm glad they where. I loved everything about this story, the pace was fluid and the storyline very believable! I would recommend this book to any horror fan! The realism of the family and their situations was astounding.

Rather than a post-apocalyptic book this one is actually set during the apocalypse. There has been a mass drought that has sparked off wildfires that are killing both crops and wildlife. As a result, the stocks of food are running very low.
Society has started to unhinge as people become desperate for food, and this book demonstrates the lengths that people will go to in order to get themselves food.
The book is set around Ben Donnelly who is trying to save his family from the effects of famine and society going mad. You literally feel like a part of the family as you follow this story through all the ups and downs.
The author of this book has made the writing very direct and descriptive. You literally feel like a member of the family watching everything through their eyes. Everything is a constant surprise as the story leads you through various twists and turns.
I would definitely recommend this book to anybody interested in anything apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic. This is an entirely different story from the usual course of some kind of disease that creates zombies spreading all over the world. This is a real fight for survival that keeps you wanting more. I found it a definite page turner.
This book has received five out of five stars from me because it is very well written and a unique idea. Saying that though, it is also a believable one.

Oh my! This is probably one of the better books I have read so far. The title 'Society for Supper' is what drew me in. The author paints a very dreadful picture regarding what will happen to society when food runs scarce. We take for granted that there is a balance and the real trouble occurs when that balance remains no more. They story is about Ben Donnelly and his family as they try to survive the crash of society. I remembered works like The Walking Dead and even Mad Max as I read the story. The Donnelly's encounter several people on their journey and some of the people they meed aren't good. Society of Supper has a lot of thrills and you will remain unsure about the people you can trust in they story. The desperation of the Donnelly family is evident and feels realistic. A must read for people who like reading about post-apocalyptic worlds and just want to see what might happen if society does indeed run out of food one day.

I enjoyed the premise of the story, and it really makes you think about how you would handle a situation like this if it happened today, which some day could be a very real possibility. Was hard to put down as you always wanted to know what would happen next.

The only things that bugged me, was there were quite a few spelling errors or missing/extra words that made it a bit confusing in spots. I also wasn't a huge fan of the ending, as there wasn't a lot of closure for the family and where they were to go from there. What happens to the world now? Does this "war" ever end? We know the family survives in tact but they have limited supplies and no real place to go aside from the park... So now what?!

This is a good book with a very interesting plot. What would happen if the world's food supply suddenly started to dwindle? I only gave this book 3 stars because it's a genre that usually isn't my cup of tea and therefore it is quite hard for me to appreciate a book like this. But it is a good read and well worth reading. It’s very similar to a number of others in the genre. Standard storyline and unfortunately quite unbelievable characters. The author tries to inject some humour but is seems far fetched and inappropriate at times. I find it hard to believe that a 19 year old girl would make jokes after shooting the former neighbours. The banter between dad and future son-in-law is awkward at best. Maybe more character development and less pointless action scenes which are very repetitive
