I really liked this anthology of top 10 gay romance. Some stories were better than others wich is to be expected in a anthology. If you like to try different authors, see if you like there writing style than this is a perfect book for you.
There are a couple of stories in this anthology i would love to have a sequel too or maybe turn in to a full length novel. for example: Rivals by jeff Adams, The Nutcracker by Drew Hunt, Blurring the lines by JM Snyder,
As one of the authors in this anthology, I won't comment on my story. But all the others are definitely wonderful, in my opinion. This collection has a little bit of everything, and that makes me happy.
Rivals by Jeff Adams - 3 stars Words by Paul Alan Fahey - 4 stars The Nutcracker by Drew Hunt - 3 stars Ya Like That? by Iyana Jenna - 1 star Making It Pay by J.L. Merrow - 5 stars Personal Protection by A.M. Moler - 4 stars My Beagle, the Yenta by Terry O'Reilly - 3 stars Broken by Sam Singer - 3.5 stars Blurring the Lines by J.M. Snyder - 2 stars The Best Man by J.D. Walker - 3 stars
As you can see by the individual ratings, this was a mixed bag for me, as are most anthologies. There were a couple I really enjoyed and a couple I didn't and most fell somewhere in the middle. I'm going to pick my two stand-outs to comment on here.
First, my 1 star story: Ya Like That? by Iyanna Jenna. This story ticked all of my boxes of what I don't like in a story. Bad BDSM etiquette. Instalove with no solid characterization. Manipulative characters. Illegal employer tactics (okay, that's not something that usually comes up in romance stories, but it's just another dark mark against this particular one). All I can say is that Evan has fallen headlong into a classic controlling-abusive relationship, and I'm not sure I even care.
The 5 star story, though: Making It Pay by J.L. Merrow. *chef's kiss* I'm sure anyone who has read Merrow's stories before knows that they're getting into something good, and this one is a favorite from this author for me. It's a slow and soft romance in a tiny package, just the way a good short story should be.
As with all anthologies, it's fun to get a sampling of different authors and stories, and to maybe discover some new favorites along the way.
[I received this book for free through First Reads and was not required to write a positive or any other type of review. All opinions stated herein are solely my own.]
Mostly teasers that end rather abruptly that left me feeling like there was a lot of unfinished business. A lot of the stories could have used a good editor. The best of the lot was My Beagle The Yenta. Very creative to see the world through Gracie’s eyes.
This was a good anthology spanning all types of people in different stages of life and relationships. The stories also range in jest level and angst level.
