La fermezza del saggio è forse la dote che più di ogni altra alimenta la nostra ammirazione. Perché il vero saggio è colui che ha raggiunto l’imperturbabilità, il distacco dalle passioni e dalle cose terrene, colui che non ha paura di nulla, nemmeno della morte, e non trema neppure di fronte al crollo dell’universo. Nel De constantia sapientis (e nelle Epistulae morales qui proposte) Seneca traccia un autentico ritratto dell’uomo saggio e un vademecum della condotta da seguire per arrivare alla saggezza. Una strada per l’autosufficienza interiore, che solo la pratica costante e illuminata della virtù può indicare: difficile e piena di ostacoli, essa conduce tuttavia alla più alta delle vette.

Une EXCELLENTE méditation sur la persévérance et nos réaction face aux injures et aux contrariétés qui nous sont vécues, et comment avoir et garder la paix de l'âme face à elles. Le secret principal selon Sénèque le stoïque est de placer sa satisfaction dans ce qui nous est propre, et non dans des choses extérieures sur lesquelles nous n'avons pas le contrôle (richesses, biens, famille etc) Ainsi, quelque soit les outrages qui viennent sur nous, nous sommes d'un caractère égal parce que nous ne perdons rien.
Pour le non-chrétien, c'est une grande sagesse. Pour le chrétien, il faut veiller à modérer certains passages où le modèle biblique diffère notamment quant à l'espérance qui n'est pas à rechercher sur Sénèque alors qu'elle est notre principal appui pour nous chrétiens. Sinon, c'est un appel imprévu à la persévérance et la constance, à l'égalité d'humeur qui fait partie aussi de la sagesse de Salomon. Un vrai bon moment.
En plus le livre ne fait qu'une trentaine de pages. Lisez le.

Argumentationen är inte logiskt hållbar, men fungerar i termer av förslag.
Det Seneca vill få ut, är att det bara är överaskningen som egentligen gör oss illa. Förbereder vi oss mentalt för det värsta, och accepterar det som en sjunken kostnad, så kan ingenting skapa rädsla, och därför inte smärta. Seneca vill få det till att den "Vise" är immun mot dessa smärtor, eftersom han automatiskt gör på detta sätt, och här fungerar inte hans argumentation.

Este clásico, merece ser denominado "una joya literaria"; por su brillante composición, su sencillez en la explicación y rigor filosófico.
Séneca toca un tema que nos atañe a todos, sin distinción de ninguna índole, pues la injuria y el ultraje lo han sentido todos en algún momento de sus vidas, siendo causa de dolor psicológico a quien lo padece desde los tiempos más remotos, el autor asegura que la persona inteligente no le pueden afectar ni la injuria ni el ultraje, puesto que a una persona madura no está expuesto a ninguna ofensa y así, no importa que se le disparen muchas flechas, porque a todas es impenetrable.
Así como la dureza de ciertas piedras es inexpugnable al hierro, y ni el diamante puede herirse, ni cortarse, ni mellarse, sino que rodeadas por las llamas conservan su entereza y forma; así como los altos escollos quiebran la furia del mar y azotados por él durante tantos siglos no conservan huella alguna de su crueldad; así es también de sólido el ánimo de la persona sagaz; y ha reunido tanta fuerza que está tan libre de la injuria como las cosas que se han referido.
En conclusión, las personas ecuánime no se conmoverán con la ofensa de nadie, mostrando carácter y coraje para defender sus ideales, aún sin el apoyo de la mayoría.

What is most impressive about this is how well it stands the test of time. Written almost 2000 years ago and the maxims given are still relevant to this day (as are all the writings of Seneca). Seneca discusses the way in which a stoic is safe from the harm of injury or insult. "There is nothing on earth so sacred as not to be liable to sacrilege; yet holy things exist on high none the less because there are men who strike at a greatness which is far above themselves, though with no hope of reaching it. The invulnerable is not that which is never struck, but that which is never wounded."
Seneca's writings compared to the other stoics is leagues ahead in aeshetics. The manner in which he conveys a point, and then follows it by vivid examples is unmatched. His writings go so well together, that it seems less of a non-fiction work but that of poetry. I fear too few have given him the praise which he deserves. Luckily, we have a lot of his works to still look back on! Not only did he speak of lofty ideals, his life from what we know of it resonates with his philosophy. And the criticism he receives of not living the stoic lifestyle is I feel, unjust. He bashes himself throughout his works for not living up to his ideals, yet, trying his best to do so. And I think we all do this. He laid down a philosophy which he defined as the true path, which we must admit was value-laden with true virtue of goodness. To criticize him for not being perfect is, at the very least, unwarranted.

What does it mean to be "wise"? In his De Constantia Sapientis and parts of the Epistulae Morales, Seneca portrays the "wise man" from a Stoic perspective. Frankly, our wise friend turns out to be quite a forbidding and unlikely figure - he faces unperturbed the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune", brushes off nonchalantly the insults directed at him by lesser mortals (including, by Seneca's definition, women) and faces injury and death with a smile. Think of Job in deep freeze. Seneca's prose is appealing, his arguments occasionally contradictory.

Bir solukta bitirdim. Stoacılığın temel kavramlarından birkaçını özetleyen bir kitap. Her ne kadar kitapta anlatılanların doğruluğuna içimde bir yerlerde inansam da, bunları gerçekleştirmek çok zor geliyor. Bir yerde anlattıkları şeyler, çocukken bize söylenen "kötü söz sahibine aittir" gibi öğütlerin ötesine geçmiyor. Herkes kötü sözün sahibine ait olduğunu bilir ama birisi karşınızda size küfrederken kaç kişi bu öğüdü hatırlayıp da sakin kalabilir. Haydi kaldı diyelim, bu sessiz kalması çok mu erdemli bir olaydır, o da tartışılır. Bilgeye haksızlık edilemiyor olması bilgenin uğradığı haksızlıklara tahammül gücünü bir miktar arttırır sadece. Bunun haricinde daha iyi ve erdemli bir hayat sağlayıp sağlamayacağı konusunda şüpheliyim. Neticede Seneca bu kitabı yazdığı Serenus'u ikna etmiş olabilir ama ben hâlâ ikna olmadım. Stoacılık doğru bir öğreti olsa bile, kalın bir odunu kemirmek gibi bir hayat vaat ediyor. Kaç kişi başarabilir bilmiyorum.

Il libro inizia con '... nel senso che entrambi i gruppi [maschi e femmine] contribuiscono in uguale misura allanvita sociale, ma i maschi sono nati per comandare, le femmine per obbedire.' Mi sono subito sentita irritata e offesa; certo il libro è stato scritto quasi 2000 anni fa, ma tant'è.
Andando avanti nella lettura ho scoperto, fra le altre cose, che un saggio non si offende, è troppo superiore per preoccuparsi di queste bazzecole, ha altro a cui pensare.
Quanta superbia.

Se ci rifletto, dal numero spropositato di letture, mi viene in mente come certe storie riempiono anche il più piccolo vuoto della tua anima mediante frasi, espressioni o gesti che nemmeno il più solerte avrebbe potuto esprimere completamente su carta.
Quando decido di leggere un testo filosofico, o, per la precisione, uno dei tanti di Seneca, la prima cosa che mi affascina sono le modalità di pensiero o riflessione che come una matassa inossidabile vedo sciogliersi dinanzi ai miei occhi, ed io, incurante di fare alcunchè, intestardita a non volerlo custodire sul palmo della mia mano come un dolce scherzo della natura, un piccolo gioco che il Fato che aveva inventato, li custodisco. Però da episodi banalissimi, eventi che ho vissuto anch’io in prima persona, ho compreso come essi siano frutto di situazioni incresciose o eventi repentini, che sono veridicità, specchio della stessa. Come spalancare una porta su un mondo la cui aria lucente ha avuto la stessa vivida e vivace bellezza dei sogni.
Da certi testi, trattati filosofici, ho sempre pensato, dovremmo trarre insegnamento, fare ammenda. Perché quella linea invisibile che si traccia, nel momento in cui certe storie plasmano la nostra anima, come un gesto semplicissimo, spiegano per filo e per segno quali sentimenti scaturiscono da queste letture.
Non si tratta di sentimenti in cui a prevalere è l’amore, l’ennesimo incauto sussulto di un cuore giovane, o alla melodia che sprigionano le sue corde invisibili, se toccate, nel tentativo di capire e carpire. Quanto delimitare i contorni dell’essere, scrutando ogni elemento, ogni parte della nostra anima, saldamente nascosta, che compaiono come una figura misteriosa nel manto oscuro della notte.
Alla veneranda età di trentatré anni, certe dottrine impartite da Seneca, ma anche da Cicerone, da Marco Aurelio, da Schopenhauer, dal mio amato Hardy, sono state assemblate dalla sottoscritta che, in un momento particolare della sua vita fu folgorata da storie vecchie e nuove, vicissitudini in cui è riposta la conoscenza. E non a caso ogni tanto mi piace accostarmi a questa tipologia di testi perché penso abbiano una particolare importanza nel panorama letterario ma anche culturale, quello mio, personale, significato profondo e imprescindibile. Da certe immagini, quelle che ti ossessionano, riesco ad esplicare ogni cosa. Comprendere ciò che ha per me più importanza, guardarmi con gli occhi di un altro, fare ammenda ed esperienza mediante figure estranee, un maestro da cui ho intrapreso certi cammini e appreso certe conoscenze.
La scrittura ci fa scorgere la luce dinanzi all'oscurità, ci fa esaltare valori come la lealtà, la sincerità, l'amicizia o l'amore, e consapevole come talvolta essa possa insegnarci ad interpretare il mondo con maggiore intensità si cerca di capirlo con il suo linguaggio particolare evidenziando, primo fra tutti, come i romanzi, i trattati, siano un surrogato per la tua anima semplice ma profonda.
In un teatro di azioni che recidono il passato e il presente, ecco come ancora una volta ho potuto perdermi e poi ritrovarmi, incuriosita e contenta di aver potuto accedere a quella soffitta dell’anima dell’autore. Questa volta, però, in cui fa da cornice, una delle sue massime di vita mediante la capacità di vivere una vita virtuosa e felice, raggiungibile attraverso la filosofia e la razionalità. Mediante una certa padronanza di sé stessi, in particolare del proprio animo e del tempo, e l'accettazione di eventi esterni che non possiamo controllare.
Pagine bianche macchiate di disagi e crudeltà in cui si tenta di vivere, in cui il cuore pulsa, e la nostra coscienza può riconoscere un pezzo di noi stessi.

Remarkable lessons and stories of stoic wisdom that can be applied to all aspects and activities in life. Why are we not teaching these constructive and balanced beliefs to our children from k to 12? There is so much that needs to be changed in educational systems and approaches - wisdom. art, thinking, and literature must be given the same or higher status than STEM or perhaps we should just recoin the acronym to - STEMP - with the P standing for the philosophies and arts - and when integrated with the others; provides a much more comprehensive and practical holistic approach to areas of human concern.

Este es el primer escrito que leo de Seneca y me agradó mucho por la forma en que expresa sus ideas.
Al parecer, el asunto de ser sabio es muy difícil, pero podemos empezar por cuestiones meramente internas para poder avanzar, y sus consejos ayudan a ello.
Aunque no concuerdo al 100% con lo expresado en la obra, es útil y eso que tiene ya sus 2 milenios, son de esas obras atemporales que recomiendo leer.
Al parecer, el asunto de ser sabio es muy difícil, pero podemos empezar por cuestiones meramente internas para poder avanzar, y sus consejos ayudan a ello.

I have to admit I was expecting more from “On the firmness of the wise man.” Based on the title I assumed it would be a guide on how to remain firm despite adversity. It was moreso just a description of why the so called “wise man” is unbothered.
And why you might ask is the wise man unbothered? Because he’s wise, so he doesn’t let anything bother him :).
This feels like a silly chicken and the egg riddle.

Un buen ensayo... bueno, el libro está muy corto como para considerarlo tal.
El punto es que da una buena explicación de lo que es la filosofía del estoicismo, de cómo una persona, digamos prudente, es capaz de evitar las injurias por simplemente no tomarlo personal.
Consejos sensatos provistos desde la antigüedad, que además hacen una lectura amena.

Another dialog aimed for Serenes a friend and a disciple of Seneca. This time we can learn that nothing can touch the sage. He has nothing to lose and accepts every day as a gift. He cannot be offended as he does not accept any rude comments against him, he is above of it. Again we learn that being a Stoic sage it is not a goal but a neverending process. Enjoy!

Molto bella l'introduzione e la spiegazione, mi sono molto piaciute e ci sono molte citazioni latine; la traduzione mi sembra anche lei molto buona ma alquanto prolissa: ho passato gran parte della mia vita a tradurre da una qualche lingua in italiano e ho tradotto pure il latino e so che certi concetti non c'è una parola italiana che corrisponde, e quindi naturalmente c'è bisogno di una perifrasi, ma forse il traduttore si è lasciato un po' troppo andare... Belloc he ci sia il testo a fronte ma sarebbe stato ancora meglio inserire i numeri per le diverse sezioni del paragrafo, ma sopratutto inserire le note anche nel testo italiano! Altrimenti diventa molto complicato e uno è costretto a leggere dal latino e può risultare scomodo... Per il resto appunto un buon lavoro e un argomento interessante anche se non condivido in toto.
