After years of trauma, she posts a final, public plea—an open call for someone to grant her an escape. Caleb answers.
Gentle. Attentive. Patient. Deadly. A man who works in the shadows, sending others to their last days without remorse. He promises her mercy.
But something about Iris intrigues him. Instead of granting her the death she seeks, Caleb forces her to live. Breath by reluctant breath, he unravels her resolve, igniting a dangerous craving for one more day.
For the first time, he feels a pull to protect rather than destroy. But Caleb is no hero. Letting him pull her back means dragging her into a world where desire and danger are inseparable, and survival comes at a price.
A dark, slow-burn romance of twisted fate, where captor and savior blur, and love might kill them both.
Dark romance has always been the genre that stayed with me the longest—the stories that hurt a little, linger a little, and make you question where the line between love and destruction really is. (Or if there even is one)
I wanted to tell a story that explored loneliness, obsession, survival, and the unconventional ways people can save each other.
My first two books lean dark, emotional, and slow-burning. I love writing morally gray characters, possessive love interests, and hope flickering despite *certain* circumstances.
When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading, gaming, watching trash TV, or spending time with my four kids.
With a Broken Wing absolutely wrecked me—in the best way possible. Savena Rachelle delivers a story that is raw, emotional, and full of intensity, with characters that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.
Caleb and Iris are the kind of couple you feel deep in your chest. Iris is a beautifully broken soul—a dove with shattered wings—who’s spent her life drowning in loss after losing both of her parents. She’s at her lowest, barely holding on, and honestly, your heart aches for her from the very beginning.
Then there’s Caleb… and wow. At first, he feels like exactly what Iris needs—strong, commanding, someone who brings structure into her chaos. But what makes this story so good is that Caleb isn’t perfect. He has his own issues, and watching him realize that he needs to fix himself instead of tearing Iris down adds so much depth to his character.
Their chemistry? Absolutely undeniable. The push and pull between them is intense, emotional, and yes—very spicy 🌶️. This is definitely a “check your trigger warnings” kind of read, but if you love dark, emotional romance with heat and heart, this delivers.
And that plot twist?? You will NOT see it coming. It hits hard and leaves you reeling… and now we’re all just stuck here waiting for the next book because there’s no way you can walk away from that ending without needing more.
If there’s one takeaway: everyone deserves a Caleb—but one who’s willing to grow.
This book is heartbreak, healing, passion, and chaos all wrapped into one unforgettable story.
First, I want to thank Savena for allowing me the opportunity to read this book as an ARC. Finding Savena on TikTok, finding her first ever novel as an author, was a pleasure and I am so happy I got to read this book. This is my honest review of her book.
I will definitely say before reading, please make sure you read the trigger warnings because they are there and some are very intense. If you are comfortable with those trigger warnings and you like or love dark romance, then With A Broken Wing, is a book I will highly recommend.
From the very beginning of the story I was hooked by the introduction of Iris and her depression and just wanting it all to end. Life has been so cruel to her that she couldn’t find the willing to live anymore. However, fate or whatever you would like to call it, had different plans. That is where Caleb comes into the story. Their meeting changed the trajectory of both of their paths that leads to together (again) after Iris’ digital post asking for help to end it all for her. Caleb is the one who answers the post.
Caleb has his own dark secrets but he wants nothing more to show Iris the light in this world and that she is the only thing that brings him light. He shows her that she can have things worth living for, that she can feel safe and that she is not broken. Their relationship that develops from all of this is beautiful that just has you loving every part of it. When the spice was spicing, it was really “spicing”. 🌶️🌶️🌶️
There is a plot twist towards the very end, I didn’t see coming until just before it was confirmed. That definitely had me saying “oh my god”! This book also ends on a cliffhanger, so be prepared! I am not patiently waiting for book two, and I cannot wait to see how Caleb and Iris’ story continues.
I want to say that I read literally everything, to the tune of hundreds of books a year. I have not come across a book in literal YEARS that I couldn’t bring myself to finish, I have a hard time DNF’ing. With that being said, I could not bring myself to finish this.
It’s hard to believe that an author with mental health struggles as noted in the beginning of the book would walk her readers into an opening scene of an on screen suicide attempt. I normally have no issues with these things, but with the state of my own mental health, I would’ve chosen not to read at this point in time, had I had known this was going to happen. The author says there is a “content note” and that the book is “dark” and to read the note on some website that does not link to anything when you’re on a kindle as I was.
Not to mention that there is an on screen grape within the first 25% of the book.
The writing itself was hard to read, and again I read everything. I read about a sentient chicken nugget last week… I mean anything.
The grammatical errors are egregious. It’s common for an entire long paragraph to be a single sentence.
Overall this just feels very deranged but small minded? It tried so hard to fit into the “booktok tropes” you see and it made it extremely predictable and the writing itself made it very hard to suffer through.
Ultimately this was my first DNF in about 3.5 years. This book fell way short of expectations, in the way the FMC should’ve fallen from the parking garage in chapter 1 to save me the time I spent on this monstrosity.
📖 ARC REVIEW 📖 ‼️this one is dark‼️Slow burn but the spice is 😘 Touch her and die!
She is his passion project 😍
The dedication in this book spoke to me!
This book had me hooked from the start! (As the authors debut novel I think this was an amazing read!) Iris’s story is so tragic and heartbreaking. A mess of a traumatic life with no hope in sight for a bright future. But when C enters the scene I see the light! He’s completely obsessed and possessive of her after a one chance run in and gives his all to save her. I felt the passion between them immediately and he gave her the will to live another day. This man is willing to kill for her!Taking out every miserable soul that broke her throughout her life. And when the spice hits 🤤 Absolutely amazing read! The ending has me in a grip and I cannot wait for the next book!!
“A broken wing doesn’t mean the bird is finished, it just means it can’t do it alone anymore, can’t find its own way back to the sky from a cold concrete step. It needs to be pick up carefully, kept somewhere warm, and given time with someone who has decided that it’s worth the trouble of healing”-C 🥹
Day 17 (I think):”Do you ever get lonely out here?” His voice dropped. “Every day. Until you got here.” 🥰 “One day, you’ll believe me when I say you were never broken. You were just waiting for someone to touch the right places and remind you you’re still whole” -C 😍
I’m new to the good reads sit and only read a handful of books each year. When I saw a TikTok of people narrating it for an audio version it caught my attention. And did not disappoint. I ended up buying the paperback from the authors website, it was packaged beautifully and was signed as well.
It honestly messed with my emotions in the best way possible. It was dark, intense, heartbreaking, and somehow still beautiful at the same time. The scene where she’s standing on the parking garage ready to jump instantly pulled me in, and from there I couldn’t stop reading. What really got me was the relationship between the two main characters. He’s not a good person at all, and the book never tries to hide that, but the way he protects her and slowly changes because of her, had me emotionally attached the whole time. Their relationship felt toxic, emotional, protective, and real all at once.
The girl’s struggles felt raw and believable, especially the loneliness and depression she carried after “spoiler” Watching her slowly find reasons to keep going honestly hit hard. Some scenes I imagined in my mind made me anxious, disturbed, some made me sad, and others genuinely made me smile. This book felt heavy the entire time, but in a way that kept me completely invested. If you like dark romance with damaged characters, emotional tension, danger, and redemption, this story will definitely stay with you after you finish it.
ARC REVIEW: With A Broken Wing was one of the most vivid, raw, DARK, and traumatic books I have ever read. With all honestly, this book had me by the throat, my heart beating a few ticks faster, and my stomach flipped from events that had occurred.
Following the FMC, Iris, who feels like she can't get a grip on her life before it spirals down even further to the point, she doesn't believe that she deserved to be happy. She decided that she needed a way out but couldn't do it herself. Enter the MMC, Caleb, who is the one to answer her plea but not to take her life out of this world but to show her that she deserves to live without the weight that was stacking on her shoulders. He is the definition of Green Flags with Red Flag undertones when he is with Iris. He would do anything to show and prove to her that she deserves everything, even if that meant he is needing to end lives that broke her to the point she didn't want to live.
This book does end on a cliff-hanger, so please keep that in mind but other than that I absolutely devoured this book and thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the scenes, and all the emotions. I can only wish that I could read this book again for the first time.
I had the privilege of reading this as an ARC reader! I loved this book! It is a dark romance so please check triggers! And spicy, indeed. I loved both Caleb and Iris so much. Caleb is a protective MMC and wants the right all the wrongs done to Iris, while attempting to keep her safe. He pushes growth in her which may not always go as planned. Iris finds herself in this book, and she is able to face some of her demons. What I enjoyed most is the care Caleb takes with her, possessive as he might be, it’s clear he is sweet and attentive to Iris. So excuse me while I swoon! The end of this book didn’t take me where I thought it would so I’ll be desperately waiting for the next one…
This is a review of provided by the author. Thank you Savena for this opportunity 😀
THIS BOOK WRECKED ME 🤯 I screamed, I cried, I laughed and then screamed some more. This book is a dark romance. It follows Iris. Iris is a girl who is done with everything life throws at her. In a desperate cry for help she finds Caleb. Or does he find her? And what happends when they get to know eachother?
I had a rough time getting through the beginning of the book. But let me tell you, once your in… let’s say Savena knows how to pull you right in and makes sure you can’t leave.
That cliffhanger at the end?! Nervewrecking. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Savena Rachelle’s With A Broken Wing (Book 1 of The Caged Dove Duet) is a dark romance that really leans into trauma, pain, and the messy reality of trying to save someone who doesn’t want to be saved. Iris’s story hit hard for me. The way her numbness and desperation are written feels raw and real, not overdone.
The writing is emotional and doesn’t hold back. I loved the dual POV because it lets you get right into both of their heads, which makes everything feel more intense. There are some seriously heavy moments mixed in with strong chemistry that dark romance readers will appreciate.
"You're still a monster." "Yeah. But I'm her monster."💀
Wow... If you are into slow burn, spice, touch her and die vibes, this book is definitely for you.
This book did not go the way I thought it would which is so refreshing in a world full of predictability and the ending was so great, it left me hungry for more.
Definitely do not miss out on reading "With A Broken Wing".
Thank you Savena Rachelle for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC copy of "With a Broken Wing". I really enjoyed reading your work and can't to read what happens next.
4.5. The story follows the trauma bonding relationship of Iris and Caleb. This book is dark - so very dark. It addresses story lines including murder for hire, rape, physical abuse, trafficking and abandonment. It is a dark romance that is gritty, bloody, violent, and spicy. There were parts that were emotionally difficult to read but I also had a hard time putting it down - such a contradiction. This book is not for everyone, but if the trigger warnings are acceptable to you, check it out. 🖤
All of this felt very tacky and poorly written. Grammar wasn’t a strong point. Whatever the author was trying to do here, didn’t work. I felt like a lot of this book was generically written and other parts were lacking follow through. I gave it two stars simply because one star alone was for writing the book and having the ambition to do so, and the other was for being brave enough to put this in to the public. But neither star was for the actual plot …
definitely dark, so make sure to check the trigger warnings before getting into it! i don’t even know if i have words to describe iris and caleb, and imma just have to tell yall to read this book bc omg 😭 not a big fan of cliffhangers but yall KNOW i need the ending, i just cannot live without knowing what’ll happen!!
thank you to Savena Rachelle for the opportunity to review this eArc!
I had the privilege to receive this as an ARC. As someone who struggles with their own mental health, I found this a little rough to read. Especially as Iris prepares. I can appreciate Caleb and his want to prove to her life is worth living. However, he could have filled her in on his work. He knew the rules but still put them both in danger.
I had the opportunity to read this as an ARC, and I have to say, I LOVED the book. It was a great read, even though dealing with some very difficult situations. Trigger warnings should be taken into consideration. However, I couldn't out it down and did not see the twist coming at the end!!
This is an amazing read. Check trigger warnings before diving in. Started kinda slow but takes off and grips you. Love the characters Caleb and Iris. Love the vibes it brings. The twist I didn’t see coming made my jaw drop. I can’t wait for the next one!!!!
DO BETTER WITH YOUR (lack of)TRIGGER WARNINGS. No one should walk into -within pages- a sui-cide attempt and then shortly after - a grape scene. The link to her page DOESNT work on kindle. Further just poorly written- run on sentences galore. Don’t waste your time.
This book was so good! I thought I would like it, but was pleasantly surprised when I couldn’t put it down. A must read that I was definitely revisit and anxiously await the next!!
WOW! This booked had me hooked from the start it was dark , emotional , crazy and just pure brilliance. Very highly recommend. Can't wait for book 2 as left on a cliffhanger .
I was hooked from the beginning!!! The longing and slow build was so worth it and the story developed the characters so well! A must read! I need book 2 now!!
Wowza. This is a dark, intense romance that pulls no punches. This book is definitely outside my usual comfort zone, and I spent more than one scene clutching my pearls. Some of these scenes deserve their own time slot on Cinemax after 10 p.m., so readers should know going in that this one is spicy, explicit, and not for the faint of heart. lol
That being said, the writing is incredibly vivid and detailed. The author has a way of painting each scene so clearly that you can picture the setting, the tension, and every emotional shift as it unfolds. Even when the story moved into darker or more uncomfortable territory, the writing kept me engaged and fully immersed.
This is not a light romance. It explores heavy themes, complicated emotions, and darker content, but readers who enjoy dark romance with strong imagery, high heat, and intense emotional stakes will find a lot to sink into here.
And then there’s the ending. That cliffhanger alone earns major points because it leaves you immediately wanting to know what happens next.
This book is a ride. It is a DARK story. You’re going to speed through this book. I didn’t move for the reading of the last 50 pages, I just couldn’t put it down. It’s a slow burn that grows from trauma. Iris’s trauma isn’t hidden, you learn as you read, so trigger warnings are real. The growth through the book is so well written and takes you through heartache and hard emotions. I loved the communication between Iris and Caleb. It was so realistic how people bond through trauma and mutual growth. While Iris deals with internal battles, Caleb deals physical battles.
This book is for all the people that want to love the villain. I am already screaming for the next book she is writing in the duet.
With A Broken Wing by Savena Rachelle is the kind of book that doesn’t just pull you in… it grips your throat and dares you to keep breathing.
From the very first page, Iris feels like a storm on the verge of collapse. Her pain isn’t softened or romanticized, it’s raw, jagged, and uncomfortably real. When she makes her final plea, it lands like shattered glass, and you feel every shard. Then comes Caleb… not as a savior riding in with light, but as something far more dangerous. A man shaped by darkness who, somehow, becomes the only flicker of resistance against hers.
What makes this story unforgettable is the tension between them. It’s not your typical rescue romance. Caleb doesn’t “fix” Iris. He challenges her, corners her, forces her to confront the fragile thread keeping her tethered to life. And in doing so, he reveals something even more unsettling… his own cracks. Watching him shift from executioner to protector is like watching a blade hesitate mid-strike.
The slow burn here is exquisite. Every interaction simmers with unspoken hunger, control, and emotional volatility. Their connection feels forbidden in a way that keeps your pulse just slightly off rhythm, like something is always about to go wrong… and you kind of want it to.
The writing itself is atmospheric and immersive, wrapping around you like a dark fog. It lingers. It presses. It refuses to let you stay comfortable.
This isn’t a story about saving someone. It’s about choosing to stay when leaving would be easier. About finding something dangerously close to love in the unlikeliest place.
If you love dark romance that walks the edge between destruction and devotion, this one will absolutely own you. 🖤
With A Broken Wing by Savena Rachelle is a ***DARK*** romance with an utterly raw and visceral story following Iris, who has finally decided she has had enough with what life has thrown and beaten down on her. She makes a desperate plea to the open web, begging for an end, where she connects with someone willing to do the job. What she doesn’t know is, this man has no intention of granting her solice from her pain. On the contrary, he is determined to do the opposite. He is forcing her to live.
Savena Rachelle had me in an absolute chokehold with this story. She has this manner of gripping you with Iris’ desperation and despair. The overall atmosphere of the first 1/3 of the book is so gut punching, so enveloping, that is was nearly impossible to put it down. The conclusion of the book was absolutely DIABOLICAL with a nail biting cliffhanger that has me itching for more!!!
Despite this book having some pretty HEAVY triggers, I actually think that it was pretty tame as far as dark romances go. The consensual spice itself was very clean with minimal triggers. That being said, please, please, please read your trigger warnings before diving in to this. There are very graphic depictions that may be harmful if you do not do your due diligence to protect yourself.
Tropes: 🔘 Captor x Captive 🔘 Touch her & 💀 🔘 “Who did this to you?” 🔘 Morally Grey MMC 🔘 Forced Proximity
This is a review of an ARC provided by the author. Thank you Savena for allowing me this opportunity! Can’t wait for the next book!
I had the pleasure of being and arc reader of Savena first book and it definitely wont be the last!
Iris has had a rough and hard life and she is at her wits end. She wants to just end it all. when she finally had enough she makes a post begging for someone's help to end it all. Caleb came in like the dark knight that he is even though he has his own hidden secrets she just does something to him and he wants her to know that life has so much meaning and its worth living. when you get to the spicy scenes it was definitely hitting...that plot twist in the book you never see come and let me tell you I was like wtf. this book does end on a cliff hanger and I instantly wanted book 2. cant wait to read and see what is next for Savena..
thank you so much for allowing me to read your first book..you did an amazing job and tou can see the love a dedication you put into it .your going to do big things
With A Broken Wing is a delicious slow‑burn dark romance. The MMC is her captor‑turned‑protector with major “touch her and 💀” energy, and I loved watching the FMC shift from wanting to end herself to actually loving her life with him.
But that ending… I was shocked. I never would’ve guessed it. It ends on a cliffhanger, and now I’m desperate for the next book.
