This is an unusual book by an almost forgotten pulp fiction author. This is a romantic novel set in Germany just prior to WWI. There is love slowly developing between an American and a member of the most elite German upper class. Most interesting in the way the book records the actions of the book's characters daily lives. The interaction between the nationalities and the classes, and religions is very interesting.

I bought a 1939 collector's edition from an antique book shop in Manila. The story is styled by introducing you to the lives of the character from their perspectives. The love story comes quite late (and a bit straightforward) and may seem like a cliché love story, but nevertheless, I enjoyed it especially the touch of comedy in how they spoke with each other.
