Well, now!

So maybe it's starting to dwindle.
So maybe the book is loosing some really important things now.
So maybe it's not all that I wanted (and frankly, expected).
So maybe it's not as good as the previous book.

It's still damn fun, guys!

Fans and those familiar with the Rune Alexander series know that with each installment, the story within will have plenty of heartbreak, loss, and despair. While Shiv Crew will never admit defeat where it pertains to the seemingly endless battles against numerous enemies that threaten River County and Spiritgrove, they at least have the common sense fight until the end, regardless of the outcome. They know that with each new battle lives will be lost, relationships will be tested, but one thing they never do is quit, either the fight or each other. They are Shiv Crew, fighting together, always together, is what they do. Are they always victorious? Absolutely not, and that's one aspect I particularly love about this series: Laken Cane isn't afraid to break her characters and put them through hell.

In Wormwood Echoes, a new, faceless enemy is after the Others: a strange disease that makes Others rot from the inside out. First brought to their attention by the new vampire master, Simon Kelic, it soon comes to light that the disease doesn't only affect vamps. It's an equal opportunity disease, striking anything Other. Rune knows that she has to tell someone at the Annex about the disease, but such a decision puts Rune in a bind. Simon is someone she's grown to like, someone she can trust to lead the vampires in a respectful way, so unlike his predecessor, Nicolas. Having the Annex know about the disease will make Rune and her Crew take action against the vampires by wiping them out. With two Others in Shiv Crew, Rune and Lex, they go to battle but aren't prepared for the potential consequences: fighting diseased Others puts them both at severe risk for also becoming infected.

Wormwood plays such a pivotal role in this particular book, as if the title didn't already give it away. While the cemetery has always been a very important place in this series, many revelations have come to light and a certain member of the graveyard has surprising information concerning not only the disease, but of Rune herself. One of Shiv's enemies holds the key to the cure, but the cure can only be obtained by traveling to their realm. Rune, being the leader and the Monster, knows that the journey will be hers to take, only she doesn't know how and she doesn't know when. It's only when she hears the echoes of Wormwood that she figures it out.

Never have I been more flabbergasted at the end of a book before. In Wormwood Echoes, Laken Cane threw some super twists and surprises out, all of which left me with my mouth gaping open at the end. I absolutely love the different direction she took with this installment and cannot wait to see what's in store in the upcoming books. Things are always changing for Shiv Crew and Rune, but never have things happened on such a monumental level before. The Crew we leave at the end of this book is dramatically different than the one we've grown used to. Members are broken, some are missing, everyone has been deeply affected by the events in Wormwood Echoes. The future of Shiv Crew is certainly on shaky ground and it's anyone's guess if they will make it back to the Crew of before. As I've said before about this series and author, Laken Cane isn't afraid to torment both her characters and consequently, the readers who have grown to care for said characters.

If you're a fan of dark and dirty urban fantasy with a little bit of horror mixed in, I absolutely recommend the Rune Alexander series. It's all of the abovementioned and more with a wonderful cast of characters and gritty, bloody, oftentimes bleak storylines. Laken Cane doesn't do rainbows and sunshine, but she manages to brighten the pages with a little humor and some sexy times. Really looking forward to the next book of this series, especially after the mother of all cliffhangers found at the end of this book.

**Many thanks to Laken Cane for providing an advance copy in exchange for my thoughts and an honest review.

I received an ARC of Wormwood Echoes for an honest review. Let me start by saying, if you haven’t read this series, you need to seriously one-click it today!! I'm serious, this series will rock your world.

Now, My reaction at the end of Wormwood Echoes....OMG, HOLY CRAP, OMG.....COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY…
I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK, but I will certainly try!!! Wormwood Echoes (WE) was dark, beautifully written and riveting. As with all Laken’s books, you definitely get your fill of action. So much has happened to Rune and Shiv Crew, they have suffered losses along the way, but yet they stand together against the newest threat. As the story progresses, it is clear that the dynamics are changing, loyalties are being tested and that deception is very real. Just when you think you know exactly what is about to happen...BAM!...you don’t and you are left speechless. As I turned each page, I found myself on the edge of my seat needing to know what would happen next, but yet not wanting the book to end because then I would no longer find myself in Rune’s world. There are some BIG surprises in this book….just hold on tight, it’s definitely a bumpy ride my friends. I truly can’t say that I have ever had a book make me feel so emotionally invested in each and every character. It’s like a movie playing in your head, you feel their happiness, love, pain, anger and betrayal. I literally can’t tell you how many times I had to stop and say WTF? or OMG?, take a few breaths and then dive back in because I just had to know what happened next. One thing I love about Laken, she doesn’t hold back, she always follows her story, no matter how hard it may be...and let me just say, my journey with the Rune Alexander Series has been a rollercoaster of emotions. Simply put, WE didn’t disappoint and was pure perfection. As I read the final page of WE, I had tears streaming down my face, I was numb, and my heart was happy yet breaking at the same time. I kept saying don’t end here, please don’t end here….LOL!! All I can say is I am suffering from the biggest book hangover. Laken Cane you are my HERO! Thank you so much for writing this amazing series. I love Rune and Shiv Crew…I’m addicted and loving it. I am eager for the next book in this series....bring on Book 7!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book.
I can't even begin to say how much I love this book. This series just keeps getting better and better. Which blows me away since every one of the books is fantastic!
You have a favorite guy in this series? Well, that might change after reading this one. This book will knock you on your face! There were moments of screaming in denial, staring off into space asking myself if that really just happened.
This book moves fast, and gets into the meat of the story quickly, it also end on a cliffhanger, a pretty damn major cliffhanger. So be prepared, and don't chuck your kindle across the room when you realize it's over. It's really that good.
I am now going to be dying until book 7 is out. Laken Cane is truly an evil genius!

I love the series and I really love Rune and her crew but I have to say this book left me feeling a little wanting. It is still a good book, but it almost feels like it should have been the first half of the next book. The ending left me staring, I couldn't believe it was finished. Nothing got resolved in the storyline and more questions were raised. What is the deal with Owen? What the hell was Karen thinking? What happened to Fie? Who took Strad? What is this disease? What is going on with Bill? Is there really a cure? What is this other world and why does Rune really have to go there?

And the death of Karen was just pathetic. I know there is more to the story to come, but the actual death was just sad. I was really hoping for a much better epic duel or something with Lex getting the final shot.

Overall, I liked the book, but it really felt like it was missing something to make it phenomenal but maybe when I reread it before book 7 it won't leave me wanting.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I had the distinct and rare honor of assisting Laken Cane with proofreading/editing this book, so my review comes to you via several read-throughs – each one thrilling. Every. Single. One. I would say that Laken Cane has outdone herself this time. Book 6 is a magnificent thrill ride that delves deeper into the mystery that is Rune Alexander, and has left me ravenous and desperate for the next installment.

I loved this book. I loved it for everything it didn't do. Laken Cane has broken all the rules with this series from page one of Shiv Crew. That is what drew me in. No character was safe, no story line was wrapped up neat and tidy at the end of a book. But this one shatters all boundaries. This one will make you feel every emotion that Rune is experiencing. This is the lead up to the most epic battle Rune will ever face. But getting there is the battle. And no one is safe. Not even Rune.
Spiritgrove is under attack. But from whom? Can it be the Next? Or the Shop? Or is it bigger than that? The Others are getting sick and they are getting sick fast. It starts with the vampires, but spreads quickly. And it is hitting all the Others. And Shiv Crew has a couple of Others on it. But that isn't it. Rune is finding out that she fears. And by being afraid, she is not making the decisions she needs to be making. The world as she knows it is under attack and the team will face losses. Losses Rune might not be able to handle.
This book needs to be read with the others. I would suggest rereading at least New Regime, if not the whole series, it will really help. This one is hard to describe in words because the answers you are looking for aren't in it. This book is all about the journey leading up to Damascus. And everything you love about the series is contained in the last line of the book. But don't peek. Not even once. Trust me, it will be worth the wait. It always is with Rune Alexander. The story is just beginning. Grab your case of Baby Ruths and settle in, Laken Cane was just warming up.

Oh My Freaking Lord...Withdrawal Already

Solid ten stars if I could. You so did not just do that to me Ms. Cane in the end of the book. How could you? My heart is thumping so fast and for some reason my hearts breaking for Rune. I'm already having withdraws and I just finished. Let's not forget to give praise to the other Shiv Crew characters. Strad is such an intense alpha male. Owen is still a major mystery, especially with how this book went. Poor Lex...what is to become of her. Let's not forget creepy sweet innocent little Fie. I want more like right now please...going to have major withdraws until the next book comes out. How long do I have to wait? If you haven't read this series you are missing out big time. You NEED to read this series. There's no if ands or buts.

How could you!!!!

My heart! It is breaking into a million pieces and cheering with elation at the same time! I'm sitting here a bumbling mess... Trying to form a coherent thought and put it into sentences for my review.

What the !!!! Oh God bless poor Rune. My heart is shredded to pieces for her. I can only imagine how she must be feeling right now in this strange new place... All alone and yet not...

Laken, you kept me sitting on the edge of my seat. I didn't want to put the book down and when I finally did at 2 am, I dreamt I was watching the events unfold through translucent eyelids!

You're writing and storytelling are just that good!!!!

This book is a one of a kind, edge of your seat, bite your nails til they bleed, cry so hard you can't read anymore kinda books and I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!

Now go write me the next book lady!

ugh another hook to make me read

I don’t like stopping a series just because it’s not my favorite or easy to read. This is actually probably super bad for my mental health lol! But it’s too good for me to stop. And I feel like I’ll win if I keep going despite all the house of horror material in it.

By this point, I’m a little frustrated with the characters. Rune compartmentalizes so much that by this point, she’ll deny deny deny until she has no choice but to face it, and at least half the time, it’s too late. And she cries, and I just can’t sympathize because she DIDN’T do everything in her power. But then I go through the whole “not everyone can do it, etc” and eventually I’m almost making excuses for everything she does and the only way I can be happy with her by this point is by thinking “she’s only human” and accept that she has limits. She’s a woman with limits and a big mouth that says she doesn’t, and that’s a flaw I’ll have to live with until she becomes better and her limits change. Until then, I’m stuck with the Rune who either harshly judges or gets cowed until she does better than them.

Man can you sense my frustration yet? LOL. I think there’s just too much for me to take without having the time to relate to Rune. And she goes too fast and goes too numb for too long for me to feel comfortable about how she goes about things. But these books aren’t bad. They’re just so hard to watch sometimes.

An insidiously brilliant virus is devastating the Other population as the intrepid Shiv Crew struggle to focus out instead of on the betrayals, secrets, loss and sorrow to shredding the team. This Mother’s day, Damascus and Karin want to have words with their headstrong daughters, Rune and Lexi, who continue to resist mom’s gentle teachings and way of life.

Gunnar’s come home, a little worse for wear, with a lady friend and big news to share. Fie escapes the net but isn’t the shy, sweet little girl she once was. Believing Next is responsible and that he’s in charge, Eugene stomps around ordering death for all vampires and for Rune to find out what Bill knows that he doesn’t. And Rune can’t resist the pull of a world outside River County without the support of her team in this busy, emotional and fast-paced outing.

Holy freaking awesome!

I thought Ms. Laken's normal world was hard. Then Rune Alexander enters another world, and holy shiznitts...the crazy reaches a whole 'nother level.

The horrendous creatures, their bloody and gorey torture. The emotional devastation followed by rebirth and growth. The excruciating silence love leaves in its wake.

Thank God I don't drink coffee. My heart would explode.

Working past this one on a reread of the series. I initially stopped with this one years back. There are several things obnoxious and thoroughly annoying on this book. Rune herself is like an overgrown toddler reacting on emotion without logic, hypocritical, goes away sobbing and screaming while Straud strolls around roaring like a demented lion. The thing between Owen and Straud is old. Writing style goes down in this one and the story is an emotional mess.

I really enjoyed this but whoa - it made my head spin! So much going on, angst and mystery and action and deaths and resurrection and .... 4.25 stars! If you are not reading this series and you are a UF afficionado, read it! Starts a bit slower and then moves like a freight train inexorably barrelling towards its destination. Love it!

This review is being written after I read TWD because with the cliffhanger this one had, I could not not read the next book. This book is one of the best in the series. I cannot write an awe inspiring review because although it was the second time I read this book, it was the first time I read The Witch's Daughter and I couldn't wait. I think I didn't write the review the first time because I had no words. No words because this cliffhanger is like no other. I wanted to claw my way into the author's head to see what was next, what was coming. Just what my favorite Crew and their leader had to overcome next.

Wormwood Echos is like an epic introduction, or a book leading up to the next one. The situations, emotional upheaval, the umimaginable loss that Shiv Crew goes through is just that; Epic. This book is the perfect segue into the next. I was stunned with where Laken takes the characters, what she has them go through. I didn't think I, let alone the Crew, would be able to get through it. I should have known better, but it was hard. Laken's ability to create characters with such detail and emotion is unique, and few have the ability. I feel like a kid the night before Christmas every time I open a new one of her books.

KEEP WRITING!

This is a dark urban fantasy. It has intimate scenes so if you do not like those, skim over them or miss an amazing book!

***I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*** What can I say about this series that I haven’t said before? It is a thrilling, nail-biting, insomnia inducing, addiction that I have no intention of giving up. In this new adventure Rune and The Crew are called upon to stop a new plague that’s sweeping through River County and along the way they face heartbreak, betrayal, death, and oceans of blood and gore as an unseen enemy seeks to draw Rune to into a realm of unknown danger ruled by a madwoman of enormous power. I can’t really say any more without giving anything away, but it was awesome. I was warned beforehand about a cliffhanger, but that still didn't stop me from practically shouting “No!” at my Kindle when it ended. I also may or may not have begged my Kindle to keep going. But alas, it is not a magical Kindle and so I am left counting the days till the next book comes out. I will admit that not a lot gets resolved in this book. It's more about the journey to get Rune where she needs to go, but that doesn't mean you aren't in for a wild ride. I'm going to be a wreck by the time the next one comes out, but it's totally worth it.

Wormwood Echos is the sixth book in Laken Cane’s Rune Alexander series and with each installment the action keeps at a breakneck pace. You can trust Ms. Cane to keep the books interesting, but you cannot trust her to keep her humans human, to keep her monsters as monsters, or keep any of them alive. This keeps you on your toes as a reader and a fan.

Wormwood Echos took several twists that I did not foresee in the Shiv Crew’s fight against inhumanity, in whatever shape that may take. My three favorite leading men: the Beserker, Owen, and Gunnar all have starring roles as they intersect in the wake of chaos that follows Rune like a shadow. Wormwood Echos is not a stand-alone book, as each in the series really builds upon the last and make the investment of time very worthwhile.

Arghh!!! I really love this series, but this book annoyed me!!! The book felt really rushed. Sooo many unanswered questions. I just feel really really confused after reading it. :(
I really wanted to give this book 3 stars and the whole time I was reading it I was thinking how sad it was going to be to give it a low rating.... So what changed my mind? The last line of the friggin book!!!! And if that means what I think it means, well then Ms. Cane, I will just love you forever and ever. But, if you are just playing with my heartstrings (which I know you would) I cannot express the amount of displeasure I would feel.
All in all an ok read, but definitely not the shining star of the series.
Can I get book 7 now please? :)

A new level of intense and creepy for Shiv Crew. Non-stop, pulse pounding, and delicious. Just when you thought Rune had it figured out with "her monster" and "her Berserker" another layer of haunting emotional baggage and "Otherly" world ending drama threaten to unravel her already loose threads. We finally see that no one is safe, Rune isn't invincible, and maybe the lines between good and evil aren't always so clear. This is the first book in the series where my jaw remained on the floor until the bitter end, and of course I now must WAIT for the next installment.

I think this one is my favorite! So much happened I am still trying to wrap my head around it all, as always Laken did a fantastic job with this one!! I will admit to shedding a few tears in the end.. I have always loved them all but I WAS ALWAYS #TEAMBERSERKER .. Now I am just really upset with him and I hate waiting to fix it.. I really am dying to read the next one already, I wanna know what happens next this book left me feeling incomplete..

wow!

Sometimes, there are no words to describe the awesomeness that is Laken Cane! She will always leave you wanting more. This book deals with another level of what? That just keeps getting better. Shiv Crew is looking for a cure to an illness that is killing all the Others and no one can stop it. Rune is called to go to another world to find the cure, but what will it cost her? There was definitely a cliff hanger but you'll like this one! Ready for boo,7!

Kickin' It

Shiv Crew is off and running again or did they ever stop? Rune is a fantastic heroin and her crew members are in full gear. The twists and turns keep the reader hooked. I love this world and it's characters. The ride they take you on has you wishing to be a part of them. From one disaster to the next, the highs and lows and the secrets found just keep getting better. I can't wait for more! Excellent read.

This book was seriously like WOW! I devoured this book just like all the others, and it was everything I expected. And I have HIGH expectations! I'm one of those people who judges books by their covers, and I have no problem walking away from a book if it doesn't draw me into its world. I've enjoyed this series from the get go and Laken has delivered again! I, like many others, read the last sentence with an audible WTF! As I've said before, thank you Laken Cane, for feeding my addiction!

This book went to quickly. I just ate it up.
One new ghoul but no other new characters. A lot of emotional torment, several plot lines advancing mildly, and too many questions for my liking.
I teared up only a couple times, as the bad stuff was repressed immediately and rarely revisited.
Next book? Rune is gonna lose it. Like hardcore lose her mind and soul, but obviously find/reclaim it in the to save Lex... she better fucking save Lex. She might kill the berserker too.
