The Straight Script

Trent:

Winning the lottery’s got nothing on becoming Magnus Rochester Lancaster the Fourth’s roommate. It might have been a challenge to adapt to living with a certified genius, but I consider myself lucky to have him as my best friend. That he pops into my room without knocking is a non-starter, but the popping in unexpectedly combined with his newest hyper focus might be my undoing. Why does my best friend think we should make adult content together? More importantly, why does it feel less like we’re pretending to fall in love and more like we actually are?

Magnus:

Trent is my best friend, and I want him in my life long after we’re no longer roommates. What better way to make sure that happens than starting a business together? There are risks, of course. I’m a professor/doctoral candidate, and he’s a student of the same university, so there might be some ethical issues with the university, but as long as I’m bringing in the money hand over fist (like I do), the university is going to look the other way. Besides, who better to subscribe to my content than my colleagues, right? Although, I would like to know why my cheeks are always flushing recently.

The Straight Script is an MM, college roommates, professor/student contemporary romance featuring two boys falling in love while pretending to fall in love for their subscribers. Please look at the content warning inside for a full list of possible triggers.

Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.

3 stars (because at least the characters cared about each other, but the romance was more of a 2)

Magnus and Trent are about 22, and they are roommates at college. Magnus is a genius and he's been at this college since he was 14, he's already got multiple phds, he's a professor at the college, but also a student because he loves learning. Trent is a bit of a jock, but also very intelligent himself. They both identified as straight. Magnus has problems with social dynamics, and he hasn't had a friend really before Trent. He wants to keep Trent close to him, he wants to continue to live with him and spend time with him, so he comes up with the idea of them starting a business together, making a p*** Channel together. The goal is for them to make enough money to be able to live off campus together next year, and help pay towards their education, so that they can have an easier time of things and enjoy more time as friends together. As a bonus, Magnus is going to turn this into a research project. After a while, they realize that they have feelings for each other and want to transition into a real relationship. But they continue developing their relationship as a slow burn, for their audience, perpetuating the story they wanted to play out. Things get dangerous though when they end up being stalked and threatened.

This book was promising at times, and it had moments of great writing that I admired at times for how smart it was. Magnus was initially a fun genius to watch, he was so smart, I liked seeing him pull one over on everyone that he talked to. He was unhinged and unintentionally hilarious at times. I liked that Trent and Magnus really cared about each other and had a solid relationship platonically before they added onto that.

But this book failed as a romance. It lost its steam/way and couldn't make the transition to romance and passion.

Things I didn't like / why this failed as a romance:

- For at least half the book, both of them were convinced that what they felt for each other was just really strong friendship. Neither of them were romantic people, and there wasn't any romance really between them ever.

- This book is very academically focused. Magnus is an academic, so that makes sense. But the book comes off a little dry at times. I wish that the author immersed us in the emotional reactions of the characters as much as she's immersing us in the intellectual articulations of the characters. The whole book was dispassionate. Which is pretty hard to pull off in a book about a porn channel.

- Magnus's therapist was the one who told him that he had romantic feelings towards Trent. This is such a clinical and non-romantic revelation moment. I get who Magnus is as a person, but the author still needs to deliver romance in a romance novel.

- The pace at which they had critical moments in their relationship was too slow to align with a good developing romance. The slow development of their sexual relationship took away from any passion between them. They didn't kiss until 66%. They didn't have penetrative sex until 94%. They more often than not recorded themselves individually masturbating, spending a lot of time apart. They didn't immerse themselves in each other.

- I wish they had sex more off camera. Almost every sex scene is recorded, and their sex life just feels unnatural, performative and premeditated. This book is very mechanical and intellectual. It needed to break free of those bounds and delve into the emotion more, get lost in passion.

- SPOILERS: I also didn't like the stalker plot and how it was resolved. I felt like the one stalker who they knew, got off scot-free and things were left a little unresolved with him. Because he got kidnapped too by the other stalker. I didn't like how the second stalker was a complete stranger and we never learned anything about who he was as a person, what his motivation was. It seemed anti-climactic and it wasn't a satisfying resolution, it just made the book more unromantic because when you finally were expecting some romance to happen, they were caught up in dealing with Trent's trauma.

- Magnus was so smart, but he wasn't smart enough to predict that they would attract unsavory attention and risk stalkers? Especially because they were not doing this anonymously at all, it should have been obvious that they weren't safe. I was disappointed that the one professor who hated Magnus and wanted his downfall, wasn't one of the stalkers. I totally thought for part of the book that he was. I had been looking forward to Magnus getting that professor kicked out of the school, but that plot line was dropped with no explanation. I also would have liked Magnus to realize that the whole reason he came up with the idea of a p*** Channel was because he had feelings for Trent and wanted to tie them together. That would have been a more romantic interpretation for the author to go with.

Some notable moments:

"“Yes, ma’am. I’ll send you the link to my site,” I tell her as I walk out the door, pulling up an email to her on my phone. “Do not!” I hear her shout when I’m halfway down the hall. I wonder who she’s talking to?"

"He literally convinced a room full of old white dudes that they should be on the side of legalizing and regulating all forms of sex work, and he did it in under an hour. It’s a good thing this guy doesn’t actually want to conquer the world, because I think he could probably convince a billionaire or ten to back him. Fuck, Magnus with ten billion dollars would be… divine, probably."

"Magnus studies my face as I lead him through the dark to the parking lot where my car is, trusting me to guide him safely. “That is an interesting analogy. It would make our stalker a rogue comet. If he hits you, it could destroy you, but if he hits me, I’ll just consume him. Apt. Scary, but apt. I’m going to make sure he hits me.”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Consent IS sexy!! I loved how positive this book was. Very entertaining. I loved the storyline and I thought it was great how much consent was centered in every sex scene. Magnus and Trent were so much fun to read about. I loved watching their feelings for each other develop. I thought the ending was a little slow but I loved it anyway!

I did like this one. It was different and kept things fun. The duo were likeable despite their egos. On the other side Magnus would probably be seen as a tyrant throwing his weight and power around. Still, it was entertaining. I did read the spoiler warnings, so got half way through and hesitated a little, because these two were must protect. Liked the marriage set up. Ending was as expected.

Ok this would have been a five star but the end left me a lil …wanting? Idk.

I loved all of the tropes in this book and the characters were great, I’m gonna search for fanart.

I understand this isn’t a very popular book, but I don’t get why. Magnus is such a sweetheart and falling in love with his character is what kept me hooked throughout the story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who can handle it.

DNF @ 6%

The intro was interesting. I liked the idea that both Trent and Magnus needed to money to live off campus, so Magnus suggested doing porn. I was not really a fan of finding out that Magnus actually had other viable ways of making money (aka the mathematics department chair offering him a job and Magnus just saying "Ugh, no. I'm doing porn" without really explaining why he was so gung-ho about it. The implication is that he wants novelty and variety, but that doesn't really explain why he roped Trent in to do it too.

First sign I wasn't going to be a fan: Trent already showing sexual interest in Magnus during their very first video. So much for "straight". I'm not asking for Trent to be repulsed by seeing a man's penis, but I do want some showing of denial/confusion because this was supposedly his first time jacking off with a dude. Any sort of story having a character question their identity (Trent having a sexual awakening in this case) needs to actually have the character be unsure at first. It's super boring reading "Oh, I guess I'm turned on by men." when the entire premise of the story is supposed to be Trent becoming aware of that.

I actually gave up thought when Trent said "Man, woman, non-binary person--doesn't matter; badass is sexy." UHH so he's not straight then? I mean I guess you can find any gender to be sexy and still identify as straight, but that's so not satisfying as a sexual awakening. Finding out the start of Trent's sexual awakening was not the expected "I'm not attracted to men" but instead "I can find any gender sexy" was such a rug pull considering the expectations the book's title and first chapter set. Why emphasize "straight" so much when Trent was going to be so close towards the queer/pansexual side ofnthe spectrum to begin with?

That's not even mentioning the hyperfast pacing the story goes through with each scene feeling like it ignores the ridiculousness of the premise in favorn of just skipping to getting things started. The fact that nobody questions Magnus or even seriously puts up a fight over something as out there as starting a job in porn when he's a very public figure at school was wild. Maybe others can deal with the handwaving of the ramifications of that, but I cannot since the sociatal taboo of making porn is foundational to any story that wants to go down that route.

Super early DNF, but I already had problems with the small amount I read. 1.5 stars rounded up.

This was a fun read- I don't always "buy in" when there's a blbi-awakening between friends, but this was well done.
We got to feel the emotions and feelings change and loved Magnus being the "protector." I was surprised by who the "bad guys: were, I was banking on another character. I'm always a fan of more drawn-out scenes/ time periods when people are kidnapped or injured, and that felt rushed. But these two together were funny and engaging.

honestly loved this

This was the funniest, cutest, and sexiest book ever. I honestly wasn’t expecting it. I knew I would like it, but it ended up having more depth than I thought and a surprise suspenseful storyline which was right up my alley.

The Straight Script told the story of Magnus and Trent, best friends and dorm mates who decide the best way to fund their dreams of moving off campus one day is to open an OnlyFans. Magnus, the resident genius and once child prodigy who is now a doctoral professor on campus despite being the same age as most of his students, frames it as a research study in order to get the approval of the higher up in campus. Trent, currently get a double major and minor, decides to go along with it despite the fact that they’re both straight, for the sole reason of getting to do something for work that’s unlikely to impede his study schedule and help him stay with his best friend.

While the channel takes off, Magnus and Trent slowly come to the realization that while they’re playing straight boys who don’t know they’re falling for each other for the camera, real life isn’t quite so different from their script. Unfortunately though, not everyone is happy to support their endeavors and they make a few enemies on campus who disagree with what they’re doing.

Overall, this was really quite good and enjoyable. It was also a quick read that I was able to get through with ease. I’d definitely read from this author again!

So, so good

Magnus and Trent are such a sweet couple and I adored the way they fell in love. I have a real love for soft falls and this was 100% a soft fall romance. Yes, they were getting it on from the get go but the love and romantic feelings were done in such a gentle way. You had the chance to see these guys truly find each other on top of having already been best friends. If only we were all so lucky! Magnus was a total BAMF and cutie while Trent was this beautifully steady and present person. I loved his casual acceptance and genuine love (including before romantic feelings were acknowledged) of who Marcus was. There was also a bit of background action going on and I was really impressed with the way that was dealt with. It was raw and honest and then treated with respect and kindness (yes that’s super vague but I don’t want to spoil anything). My favourite part though was the epilogue. I’m going to be honest, I got a little weepy. I’m not even sure why but it just felt so full of love, the kind of love that could fill an ocean but is also gentle and calm and everlasting. I don’t know… it just truly struck a chord in a way most epilogues don’t. Anyway, this was a fantastic read and I can’t wait for my terrible memory to allow me to effectively read it from scratch again!

This one has a genius

Magnus is that kid who went to college at 14, so he missed a lot of normal growing up experiences. To learn how to interact more with his age mates, he asks to have an undergrad roommate. That turns out to be Trent.

Magnus is not just a genius, he is also indefatigable, teaching classes, taking classes, and soliciting funding for the university. But that's all a bit boring, so he decides to also create porn with Trent. The porn predictably creates friction with the university, his colleagues, and attracts stalkers, in addition to changing his relationship with Trent.

While consent is very important in this story, Magnus is a steamroller who violates it pretty dramatically once, and nobody is as upset about that as they should be. Other than that, I enjoyed the story. It's sweet and kinky with some mystery and a little action - and the action has some realistic consequences.

This was a huge miss for me. I had to suspend all of my disbelief for this one over the idea of a college professor having a porn channel with a STUDENT at the same university, and then the author repeatedly hammered me over the head with consent. Like, we get it already. Consent is important. Give it a rest, already. The book was too preachy and political for me, so you know it has to be way too much given that I agree with the content wholeheartedly. However, I'm not an idiot and anyone who is reading this genre is pretty much going to agree with the content, so why be so heavy-handed with it? Who are they trying to convert? We're already in the choir.

We love a consent king!! 👑

Magnus and Trent are such a cute couple. They definitely gave some himbo vibes but I am here for it.

I love how they both had their bi-awakening together in this best friends to lovers. It reminded me of for the fans and that was one of my favorite books so I enjoyed this.

The amount of times I giggled while reading made this book so good. Magnus is the smartest man, but he’s also a complete teddy bear and I loved it. He was definitely my favorite.

DNF 70% MM. This started out good. I like the straight to gay trope so i settled in. Imo the author chose too quickly to make the guys admit their feelings to each other. That, with the endless consent repetition, i lost interest. Consent is VERY important, the most important and yes it is nice when someone deigns to check in from time to time. But this was check, check, double check, are you really sure, let me make extra sure, okay if you’re sure, check. That left no sexiness for me, at all.

The Straight Script

I loved it. Even with “the thing that happens” because I don’t like being anxious and fearful for my characters. In case you’re like me and want a heads up, “the thing that happens” starts in Chapter 38.

If you like Jennifer’s other books then you’ll probably like this one too.

Highly recommend.
