Author D.M. Flynn follows up his hilarious first novel "The Kidnapping Of Dennis Martin" with another great satire set in the Latin American nation La República. Flynn has a profound understanding of Latin American cultures and the way they interact with the overbearing meddling of the United States. The characters include a gang of petty criminal street urchins and their boss; a part-time prostitute (also head of the PTA); an incompetent American CIA recruit; and the ineffectual Dictator-for-Life of the country and his harridan of a wife and her mysterious guru. These characters and many others are portrayed through sharp dialogue and merciless descriptions, but their flaws and virtues make them real human beings, not mere caricatures. Flynn chooses to find the comedy in these relationships, and he creates a vivid and unforgettable and very funny world.
