Illus. in full color with black-and-white photos. "Covers not only the story of Robinson's prowess and his problems as the first black man to play in the major leagues, but also the story of the rise and fall of black baseball and some of its star players and managers. Nicely geared by vocabulary, sentence length, and print size to the primary grades audience."--Bulletin, Center for Children's Books.
"for millions of fans Jackie Robinson meant so much more than awards and averages. He was not just a hero for black people. He was a hero for the whole country" (45).
My son liked it more than my daughter. This is one of the best Step it Reading books I have read. There are lots of pictures and historical facts. The book is actually about the other players in the "Negro Leagues" that helped to pave the way for Jackie Robinson. Highly Recommend for kids who love baseball, or kids who love history.
