What's worse? Being a half-sprite witch accidentally and magically married to a witch-hunter, or having to go on a quest with your new husband to avoid the wrath of a pissed-off goddess?

Mokido is about to find out.

He and Kason have been playing a dangerous game of "capture the witch" for the last two years, and just when Mokido thought it was safe, he finds himself bound to Kason and on a journey he never asked for.

Light, easy reading—just a few kisses here and there, fantasy, magic, no elaborate world-building, just one POV, two men who yearn for each other and then, oh so suddenly, realize they have feelings for one another.
Okay... I had a hard time finishing this book, which is only 200 pages long. It’s well written, but it’s missing the most important thing—if this is supposed to be a fantasy story with romance, where are the feelings on the page?
I don't know, is this a case of “never judge a book by its pretty cover” or something? And I do like the author—that should be emphasized.
And the idea behind this story is solid, good, and interesting. But the narrative also leaves something to be desired. The conflicts, challenges, and suspenseful situations are resolved way too quickly. And even though I prefer it when tense scenes aren’t dragged out, I still think this story deserves a bit more substance.
Oh, now I’m just grumbling.
I’m sure there are readers who will like this book; sorry I can’t really praise it.

Update when I finished the book -- yeah, this was worth every second of the wait since 2024! Funny, just a tiny bit sexy, with excellent social commentary. The first half was a great little forced proximity romp, but the second half absolutely flies from that pleasant plateau into the stratosphere. SO good! Political intrigue and a race for a solution to the mystery. Gorgeous!
(I just worked my way backwards to realize I read the straight through in less than 5 hours since I couldn't stop once I hit the 45% mark!)

45% -- frakking BOMBSHELL! Hoe. Lee. Scheiße! I was thoroughly enjoying it already, but now? I fargging LOVE it! 🤣

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

I've read quite a few of Jenn Burke's books so far and was excited for this new book. Sadly this one didn't quite hit the mark for me and I struggled a bit to get through it despite it not being a very long book, but it also had things I did like. The Suffering of Fools is set in a world were gods are real, although not everyone believes in them. When witch hunter Kason and witch-thief Mokido fall into a stream belonging to one of the goddesses they end of accidentally married.

I struggled a bit getting into this book. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, the first chapter or so kinda felt off to me with the witch hunter and witch on the run vibes not quite working for me as it didn't feel like that was what actually was going on. This all makes sense later with their romance having been building a bit before the book starts, which again felt a bit odd like I was missing some part of their relationship, but at the same time I could see why the author decided to start the book around this point.

Anyway it felt more like the character roleplaying their roles than actually being a witch hunter and a witch-thief and these roles are actually more necessary for setting the stage than for the rest of the book in my opinion. I kinda wish they hadn't been so strongly categorized as witch hunter and witch-thief at the start as I feel like the book wasn't really about that. I also struggled a bit with the characters not being as capable or smart as their roles and past should suggest, like Mokido being this famous witch-thief that always escaped capture and then everything he does he just kinds seems to stumble along instead of showing the skill I had expected. Or Kason being this capable witch hunter, but never capturing Mokido until now and every time something happens he gets easily bested.

Something about this book just didn't quite work for me. I wanted to get to know the characters better. The world building and magic system was interesting, but didn't quite come alive and I wanted more details. The romance had already started before the book which left me floundering a bit at the start to get a handle on what was going on. The pacing could feel a bit fast at times, but not so much so it actually felt rushed, but more like I would've liked a bit more detail and expansion to some scenes to make the pace feel better. The plot was pretty straightforward and while interesting enough, it just didn't fully pull me in. The characters are likable, but I wanted more about their past and personality. There are some side characters that pop up, but their role is small enough and their introduction short enough I had trouble remembering who was who.

So that made it hard to fully enjoy the book. Then again I did feel like there were these parts that were interesting or kept me reading. It was an easy enough read with things progression quickly enough that I kept reading. I liked the connection between Kason and Mokido and I liked seeing them both come to terms to it. The whole world building part with the gods and goddesses was quite interesting and I liked seeing how the characters had to deal with the goddess under whose name they accidentally marry. I just wanted to know more about it all. The magic and the different races were interesting enough too, again I just wanted more. I didn't realize until like 40% into the book that there were other races than the sprites and humans.

To summarize: This book didn't quite hit the mark for me sadly. It had some good concepts and parts, but for a lot of these things I had just wanted a bit more details and expanding on those concepts. I liked the romance between Kason and Mokido, but struggled a bit getting a grasp on their situation and who they were at the start. I also wnated to know more about them and their pasts. I liked seeing them grow closer and come to terms with their feelings. The plot line, world building and magic system were all interesting enough, but felt like they could've used more expanding and details. The side characters were only briefly introduced and weren't present often enough for me to remember who was who. So mostly this book had some interesting aspects, but I just wanted more to make it fully feel alive.

Amazing world!

I love diving into a new fantasy world. This one did not disappoint. With a blend of magic, goddesses, and royalty this had all the excitement and romance a reader loves. I hope we get more from this world because I hated leaving it.

What we have here is an interesting twist on the accidental marriage trope, as Mokido, a witch with a penchant for stealing from nobles, is caught by Kason, an expert witch hunter. It's a romantasy version of enemies to lovers as Mokido and Kason find themselves "married" in the eyes of a goddess, Rianough. They must complete a quest to pass the goddess' test, then find themselves undertaking a test of a different sort when they become involved in palace politics involving Kason.

Mokido is a very entertaining character and his snarkiness is top level. His asides were laugh out loud funny at times, especially some of his conversations with Rianough, whether in goddess or dragonet form. Kason is more of an enigmatic character since he's seen through Mokido's eyes but I did come to appreciate him more as the plot progressed.

Overall, I found the fantasy angle of the story to be quite fresh and found the world building to be solid. And the main challenges were interesting without being stereotypical. If I have a quibble with the book it has to do with two factors. Firstly, both sections of the story are entertaining but don't quite allow enough plot development for the characters, I felt. If my wish is granted, Burke will write a followup to this story with a bit more heft to the plot- there's a rich world to be explored here and some potential still to be mined in these characters. Secondly, I've noted a couple of reviewers lamenting the fact that the process itself of the two characters falling in love is absent - it's more of a realization on both their parts that the train has left the station, so to speak. I would agree with that for the most part. There were a few situations where the characters built trust but they seemed a bit rushed.

Still, I enjoyed the story a lot. Burke has written a rousing yarn here that's quite entertaining, and I would look forward to a sequel. Mokido and Rianough, in particular are demanding a sequel, at least in my mind.

Jenn Burke is one of my absolute faves, and I’m beyond excited for her first new release in two years. Her stories are always fun and solidly entertaining, and this one is no exception. If you enjoy romantasy, I definitely recommend checking it out.

This story has all the mystique of the paranormal, complete with its own lore & mythos, and I enjoy how those elements come into play and impact these characters, creating twists and complications. It’s fast-paced and exciting without the heavy intensity often associated with paranormal mysteries. Even as Mokido and Kason solve problem after problem, the story stays light and keeps moving toward a resolution.

I’ve seen other reviews mention that the plot’s resolved too quickly, but I beg to differ. I’d argue that the main plot is the romance between Mo & Kason which does in fact take the length of the book to reach its conclusion. The quests they embark on throughout their journey are more or less subplots that keep the story moving and go a long way toward helping to establish the brilliant fantasy world Jenn Burke creates.

Speaking of romance, the MCs falling for each other is about the only thing missing for me in this one. The spark between the half-sprite witch on the run and the witch hunter who seeks him is obvious, and it makes sense that their inconvenient attraction would eventually grow into more. But to me it reads as if that’s already happened. Is it instalove? Not exactly, although there’s definitely always a camaraderie or connection. I never really felt the heat of their animosity or dislike, rather they seem content to be together, and their circumstances make it easier to remain that way.

Where you go, I go. I’ll always travel at your side, your companion on all life’s roads.’”

This is my first book by Jenn Burke, and I must say, I’m thoroughly impressed. I absolutely loved it! The blurb piqued my interest, but within a few pages, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down.

What I particularly enjoyed was the author’s unique writing style. It’s a delightful blend of wit, heart, and realism, all while maintaining a fantastical setting. The characters were incredibly relatable, even though they were part of a magical world. The level of sassiness perfectly suited our half-witch protagonist, Mokido.

One of the standout aspects of the book was Mokido’s strong moral compass. He refused to conform to a life that wasn’t authentic simply because of someone else’s decisions. This made him a truly admirable character.

As I delved deeper into the storyline, I found myself drawn into the oppression of the time period and the land. It was a powerful narrative that made me want to defend the witches myself. The other main character, Kason, was not a product of his environment but rather a product of his own experiences. He was a good man, and his character development was truly captivating.

What sets this book apart is its ability to fully immerse the reader in its world. It’s rare to find a book that can captivate my mind and keep me engaged for the entire read. This one did it effortlessly.

I’m already looking forward to exploring the author’s other books. There was a good amount of suspense and unexpected twists that kept me guessing until the very end. I hope this isn’t a standalone novel because I’d love to learn more about the side characters and their futures. Of course, I’m also eagerly anticipating more adventures with Mo and Kason.

Take a Romp into Romantasy

Wasn’t really sure what to expect when I picked this novel up, but it was a pleasant read. It has a solid plot. The second half was predictable, but it still worked. I liked the characters and the world building is solid for a short novel. You can tell some thought went into most aspects of the world. Although, you can kind of tell that this was a novella that got extended. There is a definite first half with an ending and a second half. It probably would have worked better to develop the first half’s plot and the world a bit more and then write the second half as its own book, but it’s still good read as it is. It reads well, but maybe a bit rushed in parts. And a few things seem to work out too easy for them (plot magic). All in all, I found it a nice foray into fantasy.

Plot: Mo is a half-sprite with magic who has been rightfully accused of stealing and he is being relentlessly pursued (for two years) by Kason, a senior witch-hunter. Kason catches up with him and while apprehending him accidentally marries him by speaking words close to vows in a forgotten Goddess’ river. The unfinished bond is killing Kason and Mo is not willing to let his adversary die in order to escape. Now they either have to complete the bond or complete a task for the Goddess. If they complete the task, they can go their separate ways. If they fail, Kasen will pay for that failure with his life. Can they complete the task? And if they do, will they go back to being adversaries? Read and find out.

This is a lively, magic-filled adventure that leans into humour and chaos from the very start. The premise alone being an accidental magical marriage between a half-sprite witch and the witch-hunter chasing him, sets the tone for a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously, even as the stakes continue to rise.

Mokido and Kason’s dynamic is more playful than hostile, which gives the story an easy, flowing feel. Rather than a heavy enemies-to-lovers arc, their relationship comes across as something that’s already simmering beneath the surface, with their journey simply bringing it further into the open. While that may leave some readers wanting a bit more tension, it does suit the lighter, fast-paced tone of the book.

The plot itself moves quickly, packed with magical complications, shifting loyalties, and a steadily expanding world. The various challenges they face feel more like stepping stones that build the setting and keep things engaging, rather than overshadowing the central relationship.

An entertaining romantasy with a strong sense of fun. If you’re after something adventurous and character-driven without too much heaviness, this is an enjoyable and easy read.
I received a free arc and this is my honest review

The Suffering of Fools is a cute and charming romantic fantasy by Jenn Burke. I liked the way the story is structured in two different parts with an interlude in between, and the book had some surprises as to how the story played out that I enjoyed. We open with Kason hunting Mokido, and while Mokido obviously doesn’t want to be arrested, the idea of being “caught” by Kason also clearly has some appeal. Things get complicated when the men get bonded together accidentally and the only way to break the bond involves a road trip and a quest. I found their adventure fun and it gives us a chance to get to know both men, in particular Mokido, who is the sole POV character. This is an fun magical world and, while the world building isn’t super intense, it is definitely developed enough to keep things interesting, especially with regard to the prejudices Mokido faces as a half sprite.

Please, PLEASE can there be more set in this world!? I absolutely LOVED every page of this book! Without question, this is one of the best romantasy stories I've read in a long time and I'm really hoping this isn't the end for these guys and this world. The characters were all interesting, the world building was strong, the plot kept me hooked from start to finish and I was so pleased Mo and Kason got their HEA at the end. Mo was hilarious throughout; I especially loved his conversations with the goddess! Kason was a bit more mysterious until the half way point but I enjoyed the relationship development with Mo, his protectiveness and I thought they were the perfect fit. It will absolutely be a story I reread in the future (again whilst hoping there are more to come!!) and I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who loves mm romantasy. I stayed up until 2am to finish this in one sitting so there was no doubt in my mind that I'd be rating it 5 stars!

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Fantastic enemies to lovers

I loved this book! Imalfi and the crew are amazing, and Rianough is a goddess I would follow, for sure. Mokido is so snarky, I love him. And I’m glad that the goody-two-shoes Kason sees how priceless Mo really is. I thought their relationship develops beautiful, in a more fun way than most enemies to lovers books I’ve read. They are on opposite ends of the law, but then they find common ground, and realize how good they could be together, and it’s beautiful. It is a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed how Mo shows Kason another side of things that he has missed, and vice versa. And the ending… so satisfying! I love HEA, but this one was really good, because we see that Mokido isn’t a bad guy for stealing, and having Kason discovering grey areas in society, as well ad how good Mo can be is amazing. I loved it, and I loved the magic system set up, it was really cool. And Rianough… I wouldn’t mind reading more books with her in them, she’s such a no nonsense goddess, I love her.

I've greatly enjoyed most of Jenn Burke's novels, and I was excited to dive into this one. Unfortunately, it didn't fully work for me. The structure is unusual (with one Big Problem resolved around the midpoint and then a second Big Problem arising to take its place), which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think my dissatisfaction stems from the fact that the MCs appear to have (without being aware of it) fallen in love with each other before the book starts, which means we don't get to see them go through that process (though we do see them eventually realize it). The problem with that, particularly in an opposites-attract or enemies-to-lovers setup, is that I never really understood what caused their initial animosity to turn into affection/desire.

I'm rounding up to four stars, because this was an enjoyable read overall, but it doesn't rise to the level I expect from this author.

My thanks to the author for an advance copy of this book.

Standalone. Fantasy. Adversarial to lovers. Accidental marriage. Forced proximity. Slow burn/no burn. Quick read. Single POV.

Mokido is a half-sprite witch and he’s been playing a cat and mouse game with famous witch-hunter Kason for years. Kason and Mokido end up being accidentally tied together by a goddess and having a set of adventures that test their abilities and the newly acknowledged mutual attraction.

This story was a fun romp into a decently built fantasy world, with two likable characters and some action and danger along the way. Single POV stories are hard for me sometimes, but you do get a good sense of Kason’s feelings throughout, and the fact that he and Mokido have been harboring admiration which trails into romantic feelings was not hard to believe. I would have definitely read something longer about these two characters, there was certainly room to expand the world and supportive characters, but overall this was a really entertaining read. 4.25

Jenn Burke has mastered all areas of the paranormal, but this is her first full fledged fantasy (as far as I know), and you know what? She’s mastered this too!

I’m hoping that there may be more in this world, because there is plenty of potential, but if it remains a standalone, I’ll be more than happy.

This is fantasy for everyone, the world building is beautifully done, lush, and detailed, but not so intense that you need to keep a notebook beside you to keep track of all the details and characters.
The characters are adorable, and if the romance between the two MCs wasn’t quite what I thought it would be, I was still very satisfied by the end of it.

An intriguing journey, wonderful characters, some romance, humour, and just a generally feel good feeling at the end, makes a lovely fantasy story in my book.

Mokido and Kason get married…..accidentally

This book started as a shorter giveaway story, but author Jenn Burke decided that the story of Mo and Kason needed to be expanded. I’m very glad that she did because it is a marvelous read that I really enjoyed. Although the world building and the plot are terrific, I think the best part of this book for me were the characters. Mokido is the quintessential downtrodden fantasy hero who is wandering around just trying to survive in a world where witches like him are hunted. Never mind that he is half sprite with pointy ears! Add in a tiny dragon, a dying queen, a goddess, various bad people and Kason the witch-hunter who has been trying to catch him for years and you have a very entertaining story.
I honestly hope that we get more of Kason and Mokido!

I had great fun with this one. I enjoyed exploring the new world the author created for these characters and I hope we get more stories set there and delve into it more deeply. I'm always a fan of the witch getting personally involved with the witch-hunter trope because we get to see two people who already have deeply embedded preconceptions find out that the individual is not defined by a category. Here Mokido and Kason are initially most focused on their mismatched relationship but soon, they have more fish to fry and a quest to undertake. My love of quest tales goes back to a childhood love of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles and I enjoyed seeing the twists this quest took into darker areas of political intrigue that began to sweep up Kason and thus Mokido. Snark, adventure, suspense and a great couple all rolled into one.

"At any rate, Kason might look like a hero, but he’d never be my hero. It shouldn’t bother me, but it did. A little."

Jenn Burke originally wrote this as a free novella which I didn't realize that I already had on my Kindle, lol. This version has been extended and now I'm glad I hadn't read the shorter version, this story was all new to me.

What a great story, this could definitely be a start to a new series, hint hint! I really enjoyed both these characters and their juxtapositions to one another. I loved how they were able to work together and take on these impossible tasks.

A half sprite witch-thief, a witch-hunter hot on his trail, an accidental marriage, claimed by a god, hurt/comfort, a quest, time is running out for the queen, love doesn't always make sense

leather cuffs, bloodsun quartz, dragonfire, rotterweed, royal blue velvet settee, Tiger Balm, indoor plumbing!, twice bitten, simple golden circlet

This is a great romantasy! I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. For me, Kason and Mokido leapt off the pages and came alive. Sadly, there are no steamy scenes, but the story is fine without it. It's not necessary. The other aspects of the book are so well-written, the imagery they create is magnificent.

There's also a humorous side. Goddess Rhianough's interactions with sprite/witch thief Mokido bring pleasantly comedy relief. It's interjected at the perfect times.

Mokido and witch hunter Kason play a 2-year game of cat and mouse when they actually low-key feel a romantic pull to each other. Mokido finds that patently ridiculous. Does he want Kason to catch him? It's kinda cute, though.

I keenly and enthusiastically recommend this book!

*ARC Review*

This quick novella-turned-novel follows the witch-thief Mokido, who petty thieves from time to time when he needs to eat or find shelter. For the past two years though, he's been followed by the witch hunter Kason. When Kason finally catches up to Mokido and they get into a tussle, what will happen when they both end up with a marriage mark?

I absolutely loved this little story. I love a good enemies to lovers on a quest. Half of the book was apparently a free novella by Burke for their followers, and Burke just decided to add the second part to wrap their story up in a bow.

The love was quick but didn't feel manufactured. I loved seeing the two of them banter and slowly fall for one another. I would read more stories with them over and over again.

A sweet MM romantasy adventure, with an accidental marriage, forced proximity and medding gods.
Mokido is a half witch sprite who is on the run, especially trying to avoid witch hunter Kason who has been chasing him for 2 years.
Thanks to an accidental magical bond, they have to work together to figure out how to break their unexpected marriage or Kason will face the consequences.
They have to face trials and challenges, and find themselves falling for each other along the way, despite their enemy status.
I loved the magical feel, the mischievous god, and the way they protect and look out for each other.
It's a fun twist on enemies to lovers with plenty of drama.

Oh I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Mo and Kason have been playing a game of cat and mouse for a while as the witch hunter tries to capture our little thief until Mo actually gets caught. I did not expect this story to be quite so sweet and funny in parts but it was a superb romp. Between an accidental vow, a quest, a finicky goddess, and a growing affection, these two find more than they bargained for. These characters are easy to fall in love with and I was rooting for Mo to get his happy ending with his hunter. I think Rhianough’s character and the dragonet were two of my favorite parts to this story, other than our two heroes that is.

Points to this romantasy on any number of levels: the lore is interesting and nicely developed, the world-building is immersive, and the plot mostly gives the characters enough to do to keep things moving. Mo and Kason have solid chemistry and work well together, in spite of (or because of) their previous relationship to each other. Mo in particular is an easy character to like— the kind of personality that makes every scene they're in more entertaining just by virtue of being in it, which really works in the narrative’s favor here. Overall an enjoyable read.

4.5/5. I loved this! Funny, sweet, heartfelt, and fun. All good things, and definitely worth picking up. I was going to request it as an ARC, but I just added it to my TBR instead. It’s fairly compact and the ending wraps up neatly and quickly. Also, if you’re one of those that demand heavy spice you’ll want to manage your expectations. I mean, it’s solid—the story doesn’t suffer from the length, the characters are well-developed, and there’s a fantastic amount of depth/richness to the details and world building. I’d actually love some quick reads for the satellite characters, because I enjoyed this world so much and they seem so interesting.

It is an ok book and a couple. I didn't feel the romance between the two. They went from barely being able to tolerate each other to being in love. It might have helped if it were dual POV, but we only get Mokido's.
This book has no sex. It could be rated PG. The only thing on the page is kissing. It isn't even fade to black. It's we had a bunch of sex last night with no details.
The mystery of who tried to kill the queen was kind of predictable. (It was my 2nd guess).
Book was ok but not for me.

At least for Mokido, this alliance with Kason is fraught. He is a witch keeping company with a witch hunter. But the goddess who bonds them in an unexpected marriage bond makes things complicated for this pair in other ways. And they fall in love while on many quests as they journey through this story. The author includes all kinds of interesting elements in this story, magical creatures, gods and goddesses, palace intrigue, witches - yeah magic!, and a pair of what seemed to be unlikely mates who evolve in interesting ways as we get to know them over the course of this story. Enjoyable time spent with these guys!

Ok, so I really did enjoy this book, but I wanted SOOOO much more. Their world needed more detail – I love what was written, and it has SO much promise. I also wanted to see more depth in Mokido and Kason’s relationship…the attraction happened too quickly for adversaries/enemies. While they were super cute together, it would have been great to see more depth.

This story could have easily been at least 100 pages longer. As it is, it’s well written, and the characters are great. It just needs…more. If it had a bit more depth, this would have easily been a 5-star read!

3.5 rounded up.

I loved this fun opposites-attract, enemies to lovers, fantasy story. I love how neither Mokido nor Kason are whom the other thinks they are, and their journey to love, with quests along the way.

I loved how the two come from very different worlds with Kason having no idea what it’s like to have to struggle. I liked the reveal of his true identity, and the role of family and friends along the way.

I like the mix of humour and very real danger with foes not always in plain sight. The world building is fabulous, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of this world.

I loved Farraleigh, the love spell, and her running commentary.

What a delightful read for a Spring afternoon! In less than 200 pages, Jenn gives us a whole world with wonderful mythos with gods and goddesses, magical creatures, our MC’s with such backstories! It does not feel rushed or overwhelming. Our narrator, Mokido, seems to be the only one oblivious to Kason’s real reasons for chasing him all over the country. I adore Mo’s friends. His goddess is the boss. And how Kason claims Mokido in front of his family, nobility, just swoony. I’m really hoping Burke gives us more adventures with these two, their friends and their goddess!

4.5/5 This was so much fun! I loved seeing the relationship develop between Mokido and Kason. They have the most ridiculously awesome foreplay/courtship cat-and-mouse chase past, and we get to see the awesomeness (aka fallout) when Mokido actually gets caught.

I loved seeing them start to get to know one another properly and slowly prove how they really feel. Rhianough’s interference was highly entertaining.

I’m totally envisioning these two going on adventures forevermore.

I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.
