The Witch with the Wonky Broomstick

Rate this book
This fully illustrated book is a must-read for kids and grown-ups who never really grew up.

Be prepared to hold your nose as the Phantom Pumper strikes again. Stare in awe at the giant snail. Feel for Harry the Rat as he desperately tries to find a friend. And dodge the ogres as they attempt to snotify anyone nearby. Some of the characters are nice. Some aren’t. You decide!

The Witch With The Wonky Broomstick is a great book to encourage youth to love poetry.

Clever compendium of poetry compiled on diverse set of subjects. The author begins with an introduction about her obsession with writing rhymes. In the first poem, readers meet a witch who has a wonky broomstick that she cannot control. Other poems explore toys that come to life at night, a naughty boy who piddles everywhere, naughty gnomes, a three legged dog and a kid who never takes a bath.

Each poem ends with a well drawn illustration. I think the poems and the style of humor will appeal mostly to students in grades three through six, and probably more to boys than girls. Readers outside the UK might be unfamiliar with some of the vocabulary. Good way to get reluctant students to explore poetry.

This is an amazing book of poems for children and the adults who love them to read. Whether alone or together, this book is filled with fantastic rhyming poems, which are delightful. The author adds in enough of the gross stuff that kids and grand-kids are going to giggle and laugh as they follow they people in the poems on their adventures. The author does such a wonderful job with these poems and each tells a special story that not only children but their parents and grandparents will love. The rhyming poems are fun to read out loud and share. Great job on a book that will be an amazing addition to a favorite library.

Disappointed

I do not enjoy reading books such as these for I prefer books of faith; however, the author has good character development and tons of potential.

Some funny poems. Some less so, but worth a read.

A Book To Encourage Youth to Love Poetry!
I enjoyed this book. It is definitely targeted to a younger crowd (hence, the 4 star rating), but it is well written and fun. I love the rhyming of the stanzas. I think they are original and that kids will like reading them. I enjoyed reading them! LOL
I thought the artwork was great as well!
I can see the way BERTIE BOGOFF and THE PHANTOM PUMPER will appeal to boys and how the poem LITTLE SALLY SOUTHGATE will appeal to girls. The humor is a little crude, what I would consider "bathroom humor", but it is appropriate for kids. Most kids I know love to joke about passing gas and such, so this book, I feel, will delight them! I can see buying this for my nieces and nephews for sure, but I do think it is a little more targeted towards males. That is nice though, as it is nice to see a book that will encourage our youth to appreciate the art of poetry!

A cute and creative collection of poetry that will make all children engaged. Perfect for halloween/fall, this collection, full of original poems, that even start with a poem about the author trying to come up with ideas for poems. This sweet collection will capture the imaginations of the classroom, and inspire some of their own poems.

I love how this book starts with the author making a poem about how hard it is to come up with ideas for poems. This could be used for children coming up with poems, or just working through problems. I would love to use this for a writing lesson...or two.

writing lesson, phonics, rug-time, seasonal special poem
