Brad Gottfried's Grant & Meade offers a needed analysis of one of the Civil War's most unusual relationships. This is an important work since Gottfried analyzes the sources, looks at the actions actually taken on campaign, and notes how Grant and Meade's relationship evolved. This is important because, while ultimately successful, the command arrangement remains controversial and was unprecedented during the war and is therefore worthy of a closer look.
The work is at its best on the Overland campaign, which Gottfried is acknowledged expert.
