Welcome to Floor Three, where the rules are made up, and everyone is cheating.
Jack finally has something resembling a crew capable of climbing the Tower, which is great timing, because finishing Floor Two first requires a few minor chores. Conquer a city no one has ever conquered, put down an immortal lich who's being suspiciously helpful, and hold onto power while every climber, faction, and opportunist in the Tower chooses this moment to start a war in Broken Moon City.
If he can manage all that, he gets to join a tournament on floor three as a reward! Definitely not designed to torture him for the entertainment of millions, run by a clinically insane gamemaster who's spent an alarming amount of time plotting creative ways to ruin his life specifically, and filled with an absurd number of competitors cheating at every possible opportunity.
In The Cheater's Tournament, where everyone is looking for any edge, his advantage is playing the hand he's dealt.
After finishing the Secret Quest on the second floor, plus gaining a mana core, the Omni-core Mk 1. Jack and his team are finally able to head up to the next floor. A floor without Monsters, but it does have tournaments lots and lots of 'em! A tournament for every class imaginable. So yeah what's not to love with pulse-pounding action on every street! And wouldn't you know it, Jack discovers a secret tournament. The Cheaters Tournament and as part of the game he isn't allowed to tell anyone a thing about it, not even his own team, or the secret quest/Gamemaster will kill 'im. But, can Jack Beat/Cheat the Cheaters? And well meet Cube he's som'min else... just Wow! Man oh man soooooooo friggintastic! So yeah grab the book! You'll Love it! Guaranteed...
Here's a couple quotes:
"Jack’s smirk widened. “Oh my god,” he whispered. “It’s Iron Chef.”
"He did not want his epitaph to read “death by getting rained on.”
The story here seemed to build slowly with lots of fights on top of fights. In the end Jack wins, of course, and this book sets up interesting possibilities for the next installment(s). Jack’s anarchic style is at time grating or amusing, depending on the scene. I guess that’s part of the point.
If you have read He Who Fights With Monsters and enjoy that main character, you’re going to have a great time with the series. Can’t wait for the next book to come out!
