Shelved to “didn’t finish”. I think I’ve had my fill of self improvement. Whilst this book was loaded with sage advice the premise of the writing and style annoyed me. A book of fiction interweaved with famous quotes after quote just didn’t engage me. Nothing new so shelved.

Dạo này mình bắt đầu tập đọc lại những sách phát triển về kĩ năng, thiệt may mắn làm sao khi gặp được những cuốn sách hay như thế này để níu mình lại trong chặng đường đầu quay lại với thể loại sách này.
Mình rất thích sách kĩ năng nhưng viết theo một mạch truyện như thế này, nó làm mình dễ theo dõi hơn nhiều ( cũng có thể tại trước đây đọc truyện nhiều quá nên bị vậy), ngôn từ tác giả sử dụng cũng không quá cao siêu, dịch giả dịch tốt và những bài học, triết lí sách truyền đạt- tất cả mình đều hiểu được, hoặc Ít ra đều chạm được tới mình khi đọc và ngẫm lại chính bản thân mình trong thực tế. Có những điều sách đề cập mình đã từng đọc hoặc nghe từ đâu đó, giờ biết lại lần nữa vẫn thấy hay, đôi khi mình nghĩ mọi tri thức của nhân loại đều liên kết với nhau ở một mặt nào đó, như cuốn này chẳng hạn. Một cuốn sách đáng để đọc lại và đáng để giới thiệu, hoặc tặng cho người yêu đọc khác !

Quyển sách này thật tuyệt vời. Trong 3 người thầy thì mình thích nhất người thầy thứ 3 - nữ CEO.
Thích câu này "Như khoa học đã khẳng định, ở một cấp độ vô hình rất sâu, người ta cảm thấy ý chí mà bạn dành cho họ. Và điều này khiến cho họ đối xử với bạn theo cách phản ánh những gì tốt đẹp nhất bên trong chính họ."
Là hành trình của người đi tìm lại chính mình, biết rõ mình là ai và sinh ra trên đời để làm gì.
Hành trình đi tìm câu trả lời cho 3 câu hỏi lớn trong đời
Sau cuộc trò chuyện ngắn với cha của mình, Jack đã đánh thức được phần nào trong tâm hồn của mình. Tuy nhiên, anh chàng vẫn còn băn khoăn về 3 câu hỏi mà cha anh đã nói, điều này đã thôi thúc anh lên đường tìm ra lời giải cho những câu trả lời này.

Self-help books are tricky. In my view, to be effective, they have to balance meaning and purpose with readability for the audience. In the best books, the audience doesn't realize that they are learning. In my experience, when I begin to feel lectured to, I lose interest and begin to nit pick the writer's material.
The best self-help books I have read have been memoirs. The writer pours his or her heart out and shares what he or she has learned. Off the top of my head, two self-help or motivational books that I enjoyed reading recently are This Is How: Proven Aid in Overcoming Shyness, Molestation, Fatness, Spinsterhood, Grief, Disease, Lushery, Decrepitude & More. For Young and Old Alike. by Augusten Burroughs and When the Heart Waits: Spiritual Direction for Life's Sacred Questions by Sue Monk Kidd. There are other books that can effectively combine a message with a powerful story, but these are the two I can think of immediately. I guessEat, Pray, Love would also fit into this category.
This book might have been move effective if the author Robin Sharma had written a memoir and made the message more personal. Instead, he chose to present this material in fictional form. In this story, Jack Valentine is a successful business man whose life is empty. His life is transformed as he meets three different teachers - a priest, a surfer and a CEO. I don't think I am giving anything away by saying that Jack learns how to face his faults and his fears and open his heart to love.
The early chapters where Jack is facing his faults and fears had the most impact on me. But gradually, I began to resent the tone of the "teachers" and the stilted dialogue. Where in life do you find someone who has a conversation with someone else using mostly quotations of famous people? I like quotations, but not as a substitute for real conversation. A priest quoting certain sections of the Bible would make sense, but the priest didn't quote the Bible. Jack and Father Mike were in Rome together for a month and, if I remember correctly, Father Mike didn't talk about Jesus or the Apostles, Moses or the Psalms or anything related to religion. He quoted Thoreau and T. S. Eliot.
I admit that I was still engaged until Jack met the business executive-turned-surfer Moe Jackson in Hawaii. Moe was also a successful business man, whose life was empty until he found love. Jack spent a month with Moe, learning how to appreciate his own life. Moe quoted Carl Jung, Albert Einstein and Mr. Spock among others. I was beginning to find myself quoting the Miz of WWE fame in this chapter. "Really?" popped into my head a few times too many.
Then, two thirds of the way through the book, I really lost interest. Tess was a powerful business woman in New York who used love as a business tool. ("Really?") She quoted Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Theresa. (Shouldn't the priest have quoted Mother Theresa? Just saying...) Funny - I didn't even realize until now how odd it was that the CEO of love quoted Mother Theresa but the priest didn't.
In this time of uncertainty, I was hoping to find peace and tranquility. I did learn a few things about love and fear, but overall, I didn't like this book and I didn't find peace or tranquility. I would give it 2 and half stars, maybe three at most. I would have liked it better if it had been a heart-felt memoir and if there had been less use of quotes by famous people.

This book is about determining what really matters in life- not money, not material posessions, but the real stuff of life. The main character meets with three inspirational coaches who each offer a slightly different perspective and different advice on living an extraordinary life.

The worst book I've ever read. It is based on a fake view of reality, it's made for you to believe that the world is all wonderful.
It's fool of cliche ideas like I'll go to India and change myself completely, I'll get home from there spiritualized...
Try and open the book at any page and count how many words like "good, amazing, wonderful, beautiful..." you'll find.
The main message is that choices must be made by intuition and with the heart. Despise reason and logical reasoning. It does not accept the symbiosis between reason and emotion.
It uses 200 pages to say the same message along the whole book, that message is none...
It masks the lack of content with quotes from renowned authors. And there is still the impudence and self-centeredness to rise to their level, such authors as Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus!
I closed my shelf to self-help books. Tries to be philosophy for dumb people...

کتاب فوق العاده خوبی بود. تاثیر خیلی زیادی روی افکار و نگرشم گذاشت
بخش رییس رو فقط به نظرم بعضی جاهاش نشان از کمال گرایی بود که از نظر روانشناسی درست نیست چون مرتب تاکید می کرد روی بالا بردن استانداردها و من زیر یکی از صفحات برای خودم نوشتم مگه معمولی و متوسط بودن چشه؟
بیشتر با بخش قدیس و موج سوار ارتباط برقرار کردم و بسیار ازش یاد گرفتم. خلاصه که حتما بخونیدش

3, Hãy mở lòng với thế giới và thế giới sẽ mở lòng với bạn .
4, Hãy gạt bỏ mọi đắn đo của con về con đường mà con sắp đi và chỉ việc bước lên con đường ấy với thái độ tò mò của 1 đứa trẻ , chỉ cần biết rằng khi bước ra từ đầu bên , con sẽ là một người mới , hoặc chính xác hơn là khác xa với con người lúc này .

- Chăm sóc bản thân thật tốt : dành thời gian xoa bóp thư giãn , ngắm những vì sao lấp lánh trên bầu trời , ăn những đồ ăn ngon để cơ thể khỏe mạnh , chỉ đọc những cuốn sách bay nhất ,nghe những âm nhạc thú vị giúp tinh thần thăng hoa .

Recomendo muito! Um livro para ler e reler várias vezes. De forma simples o autor transmite uma forma de ver e de estar na vida, dando prioridade à natureza e ao amor. Tudo acontece por uma razão.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Sharma is definitely not among my fav self-help writes, yet this book left a great impression on me. There is just one thing I really don't like about his books..they all look alike. Oh well, at least I got few good advices form this one :)

Quả thực chưa khi nào mình đọc cuốn nào nó nản như cái cuốn này luôn. Diễn đạt dài dòng, lòng vòng mà lê thê. Những thông điệp nói ngắn gọn thì chắc trong một trang giấy là hết nhưng được viết lan man quá mức cần thiết, cộng với các thông điệp này khá thường thấy trong các cuốn khác mà còn được trình bày hay hơn và dễ hiểu hơn nhiều.
Cho nên nếu ai đó cần thì mình sẽ khuyên thay vì đọc cuốn này thì nên đọc cuốn “Chủ nghĩa khắc kỷ” hoặc “Ho’oponopono Sống như người Hawaii chấp nhận biết ơn và tha thứ”...

Libro de mucha reflexión, el complemento perfecto del “Monje que vendió su Ferrari”. Robin Sharma sin duda es un gran maestro para hacer de estos temas una fascinación y un tema de interés para todos.

A friend of mine gave it to me, saying that it changed the way she faced life. I was really skeptical, because all the books i’ve read about spirituality are so fucking pretentious, with so many pretty words that don’t mean a thing actually. But I value a lot my friend’s opinions, so i was willing to give it a try.
Turns out just as I expected: incredibly pretentious, probably the most pretentious book about spirituality i’ve ever read, with all the captions of famous writers and always talking about the same things, just with different words (love yourself stop being superficial blah blah). I came to a point and thought “wow i didn’t understand a thing of everything that i read in 100 pages”. I gave up on this book. I desperatly need to find a book that connects to my soul, but so far all the books about spirituality i’ve read are so fucking boring and dumb (except for siddhartha,probably my favourite book). If you are like me and think that your soul died don’t read this book because it will probably reinforce that idea.

Tinha grandes expectativas para este livro, há muito tempo que queria ler algo de Robin Sharma, mas devo confessar que foi uma luta difícil.
Considero fundamentais as ideias e a mensagem que Robin quer transmitir para o crescimento pessoal e o autoconhecimento, mas peca pela maneira como a mensagem foi transmitida. O livro está cheio de lugares comum, frases cliché e citações, o que fez com que fosse muito difícil para mim ligar-me ao livro e ler com entusiasmo.

"Knowledge is, knowing that tomato is a fruit; wisdom is, not putting it in a fruit salad".
This book presents the scientific and philosophical work on human behaviour as a self-discovery journey. I can guess that I would have loved this book much more, 5-7 years ago, till I had not been introduced to the "real" scientific and philosophical work.
While I like the part dealing with the human behaviour (much to be taken with a pinch of salt, of course), this book fulfills all the typical criteria for which the self-help books are hated.
This book has wrong approach leading to the (mostly) correct conclusions. However, I cannot really respect an author who tries to package metaphysics as physics. For instance, to explain why trust is important for personal progress, the author makes one of the characters (teachers) say that the EM field created by heart is 5000 times more than that of the brain. While I cannot corroborate or deny the statement completely... I do not find any fit between the conclusion and the reasoning. The author cannot differentiate between "heart" the metaphor and "heart" the organ. At another instance he says "the thoughts we have, vibrate at a certain energy"... We attract the reality of same energy (or something like that)... Wow.
It is also clear that the author himself was quite enthusiastic while writing the first half of the book as you can see the quality of the advices going down... As you move from the conversation with the saint, towards the conversation with the CEO.
He even mentions his previous book "The monk who sold his Ferrari" as being placed with the other books,which he considers as classics. Amazing guy. He even says that "science confirms" that people can "feel" the goodwill you have for them.
Now the part I liked about the book:
It is full of practical quotations (I cannot corroborate if they are misattributed either). And the author tries to build the story over these quotations.
Few notable things:
1) The opportunity to grow is often presented as challenge and imperfections. It's not the destination... But the transformation during the process of reaching there which really matters.
2) Make good use of time. Most of us live as if we have forever to live.
3) We should work towards our best selves. The author calls it destiny.
4) When you open your heart and are happy with yourself, you can also make others happy.
5) Live in the present. Don't over-plan as releasing control teaches us humility.
6) Take your own responsibility... Don't act as victim.
7) In life, we don't get what we want, we get what we are. So, we should think and act like the person we want to be.
8) You should own the bright side of your personality as well as your shadow. If you don't own the shadow... It will own you. Accepting all of yourself brings peace and joy.
9) Stop tagging situations as happy or sad. Enjoy all the situations with detachment.
10) When you are ready, the right teacher appears. The lessons keep repeating till you learn, and they progressively become more painful. Once you learn them, you graduate to the next life lesson.
11) In any situation, choose the most loving response to people. People usually respond either due to love or fear... Try to respond with love.
12) When people misbehave, they are actually crying out for help. It's either due to fear or hurt. Treat them with love.
13) Compare yourself of today only with the yourself of yesterday.
14) Live and work with dignity. Cherish good name.
15) Don't be afraid of losing.
16) When loving people, don't allow them to walk over you or to treat you with disrespect. Hold high standard and dignity.
17) Be a servant leader: give yourself up to a mission.
18) Money is just the consequence of the value you create. Try to create value for others. Make others feel special.
19) Actions always have consequences. Act well with yourself and with the others.
20) Circumstances don't create a person, they reveal a person.
21) A wise man always does things at once, what a fool does finally.
22) To stay quietly and think is the most difficult part.
23) Live in the moment, instead of living in the head.
24) Some people live completely in heart... Impractical. Others love only in head...They are just reason and logic.
25) Self care: (a) make things simple, people are not scared of death but are scared of not having lived (b) write journal (c) commute in nature (d) eat good food.
26) A mistake is only a mistake if you repeat it. Otherwise it's a lesson.
27) Positive thinking isn't really good if you use it to avoid thinking of the challenges. Use it to learn the lessons once the challenges are over.
28) Steps to what you want (a) Name your concrete goals (b) Make a strategy (c) Make a self contract to follow goal (d) Act immediately... The more time that passes between making a goal and working on it... The worse it gets. Law of diminishing intent (e) measure improvement

30) Everything that irritates us tells us something about ourselves. We should be mature enough to do inner work.
31) We see the world as we are, not as it is. You cannot identify a quality in others which you don't have yourself.

33) As our bright side grows, our dark side grows too. It forces us to stay small, to think and feel in small ways. As we get closer to the love, our greatest fears also come alive.
34) Life is nothing but a journey back home. Therefore, it's not self-improvement that we are looking for, it's self-revelation. We have to work towards reaching our best selves.
35) Unconditional love is to support people even if you don't agree with them.
36) The biggest sin is not living our own life... But the lives of our teachers and parents. We do this because (a) we are scared of failure (b) we fear our own light, as with great power comes great responsibility.

No, no, no… not EVERYTHING that happens is for a reason, for our growth. If you’ve ever worked in human services/social work, you know the horrors that are perpetrated on children. Babies even. And no, if someone is mean and hurtful, it is NOT your role to love them more. Those myths have kept countless women in abusive relationships, have allowed child abuse to continue. Just no. I do not destroy books but this one has me tempted. It’s not just bad…it’s dangerous!!! Do NOT recommend this one at all.

Good Book.. But if you have already read Who will cry when you die, A leader who has no tiled and The monk who sold his Ferrari then this book would be just OK.. As majority of concepts are repeated from those books.
