Your enjoyment of Dan Spivey's autobiography will depend on your enjoyment of the "wrestler finds sobriety" sub-genre within the wrestling biography genre.

If you want deep insight into Spivey's wrestling career, The Dangerous Truth will disappoint. That is unfortunate, because Spivey's career had some noteworthy moments, such as participating in the WWF vs NFL battle royal at Wrestlemania 2 and wrestling in Bruiser Brody's last match. With the exception of a fight with Adrian Adonis, he sprints through his wrestling days rather quickly. My main reason for buying this, enjoying the compelling yet short-lived Waylon Mercy gimmick, is covered in basically two pages.

What makes this extra disappointing is Spivey proves to be a damn good storyteller in the rest of this book. Besides the addictions, it is a story of a poor redneck upbringing, D1 college football glory and shadiness, pimping, drug dealing, loan sharking, and shooting someone. I was glued in from beginning to end. He tells the story of addiction in an honest straight-forward manner, and may come off as cruel to some based on the trail he left behind. Jeff Jarrett's forward seems to attest that Spivey has come a long way to being a better person.

I'd recommend the book, but wrestling fans beware--his personal life is more interesting than his wrestling career.
