By a strange twist of fate, Merit is trapped in the underworld with only one ticket out—she must break the curse placed on the god Anubis! Thankfully, she’s gotten on good terms with the other gods, including Anubis’s father Osiris and younger brother Horus, but the more fun she has in the underworld, the more she begins to miss home… Amidst the divine family drama and Merit’s developing feelings for Anubis, Set, the god of storms and chaos, attacks and steals Merit away!
I was quite fond of the first volume of this series, so naturally it only turns out to be two volumes in total. I’m not sure if this was supposed to be just the two or not, which probably says a lot about the quality of the ending, in a good way.
Anubis continues to be tsundere, but Merit has begun to really miss her family in the real world. Eventually, Anubis realizes he needs to cheer her up, so they head out on a marketplace date.
This makes for a fun time and this series has always had a sense of humour that I really appreciate. Not to mention we have zero other stories like this, with hot jackal-headed gods (the furries in the audience will love this one).
Seeing Anubis turn into a total otaku over mummification is hilarious, plus it shows his barely-hidden fondness for humans. Especially certain humans. Then Set shows up as the god of violence and making Anubis miserable, spiriting Merit away.
Set’s a jerk, but in true fashion, a human girl will set all things to right. Also, Set may be Anubis’ dad or uncle depending on what mythology you read. There’s a lotta incest in there too, but ancient myths love their incest.
It all tumbles together to a conclusion, one that amusingly teases Ra and then kicks him to the curb immediately. It doesn’t lack for velocity, but it also doesn’t feel so rushed that I didn’t buy it. The emotional seeds were there, so it worked out. Everything that needs to be said is said, let’s put it that way.
Mix in a very goofy bonus manga set in high school that sneaks in the old princess carry and you have a pretty full meal. Even if it does feel like a few courses went unserved. I’ve read worse and enjoyed my time with it, which is good enough for me.
You can absolutely see where the story could have gone even further in various directions, but if this is all we got it still works. I’ve sat through more than one Shonen Jump title that got the axe after three volumes that was far less cohesive.
3.5 stars - I think it’s not quite as strong as volume one, but I still found it satisfying. It’s a quick little series that certainly had plenty of… you know.
Complete: 2 Volumes Volume 2: Chapters 5-8 + Last Chapter + Extra volume + Additionals
The story: A girl is sent to the underworld but she is still alive. If she wants to go back to the living world, she needs to lift Anubis’ curse.
Drawing style: 9/10
Final Thoughts: It was so short and had an open-ending but it was still interesting to read. I feel the romance is not the main plot but we do get some.
Would I recommend this manhwa: if you enjoy short stories that end abruptly.
Despite being alive, Merit finds herself in the underworld and is desperate to find her way back home. The only one with the power to let her leave the underworld is the god Anubis who is jaded and uninterested in his work. Merit learns that Anubis has been cursed and sets out to free him and hopefully convince him to let her go home.
This was a cute series, the art is pretty, and I loved the setting. I haven't run across many manga with an Ancient Egyptian setting and I think it did a nice job working in the mythology. It has been a bit since I studied Egyptian mythology, but from what I remember it was fairly accurate.
Anubis and Merit were definitely a grumpy x sunshine couple and I enjoyed their story. Anubis is jaded and has lost faith in humanity, but over his time with Merit he slowly regains that faith. Merit is very much a happy bubbly character, but you can see that she misses her family and is torn as her feelings for Anubis grow. I think they need each other to be whole.
While I liked the story, I will admit it felt very rushed and I can help but think it was originally supposed to be longer. The second volume was especially rushed and I was a little disappointed in the conclusion. I am also sad that the author admitted that she cut characters out of the story, including Ra
