Volume 27 opens a completely new arc in the series. The concept itself is excellent. Artificial intelligence , virtual reality, the question of consciousness, and the boundary between a program and a being with its own will offer the author enormous possibilities. However, Murcielago doesn't fully utilize them. Ultimately, we get a decent start to a new storyline, but it doesn't quite capture the attention of the previous volumes.
The story is rather uneven. Some of the solutions used are very predictable, and some of the puzzle mechanics aren't as satisfying as they should be. I get the impression that the author primarily wanted to use the compelling AI theme as a foundation for an effective story, rather than truly maximizing its potential.
Fortunately, the book is saved by its characters and unwavering visuals. The introduction of a new character from the digital crime unit is a real eye-opener. A girl in a school uniform, with a hooded cat ear design and a mechanical, wiggling tail, a complete introvert and gaming geek, she brings a wealth of excellent humor. Her absurd appearance, juxtaposed with the dark investigation, creates precisely the contrast I love about this title. The art is also top-notch. The character designs are expressive, the action scenes are dynamic, and the grotesque remains a staple of manga's visual language. However, they lack the raw, bloody intensity that captivated the previous volume.....
