Book four of Maggie's Grove

Fire elemental Mollie Ferguson is on the wrong side of a group of enraged shifter wolves. She's been secretly investigating a plot that could destroy the small-town supernatural haven of Maggie's Grove. But when a beloved pack member is killed, everyone thinks she's the murderer. In desperation, she turns to the one person who will help her—the true mate she rejected. His presence rekindles an old, irresistible desire, and makes her wish she'd chosen differently.

Without Mollie as his lover, the dryad Greer Berkley is dying, the leaves of his birch turning to autumn shades. But he will not allow himself to fade until he has ensured Mollie's safety. All know Greer as a healer, but few know the true depth of his power as a defender.

Greer and Mollie must complete her investigation and clear her name before the pack demands vengeance. And if they are to know each other's touch at last, the only chance is now, before it's too late for Greer.

All Things Urban Fantasy

I decided to review SONG OF MIDNIGHT EMBERS due to the mention of dryads and elementals in the description. I don't think I've read urban fantasy or paranormal romance involving dryads as central characters. I was fascinated by the mythology and magic of the dryads in this book. I had some trouble wrapping my head around the concept of traveling through the trees and dryads entering their trees but besides that it was really cool to explore a new paranormal creature. At times Greer seemed to come act sort of like a werewolf would with some growls and odd behaviors that I'd associated with shifters but in the end put that down to reading too many books with werewolves in them.

The plot revolving around attacks on various magical inhabitants of Maggie's Grove was really well done and filled with twists and suspense. It's a murder mystery in a small town but with people who have incredibly amazing and varied powers that make the solving of such murders all the more messy and complicated. The plot carries over from book to book and did make figuring out character relationships and minor plot point a touch confusing but it in no way hampered my enjoyment of the book. I will definitely have to go back to the previous books to better understand things and of course read more about some of the very interesting side characters and their mixed paranormal relationships.

Greer and Mollie's relationship is filled with hilarious banter and communication issues that could have been resolved with people simply talking to eachother. The central plot could have been resolved a lot quicker with some talking as well but then there would be no book... I liked seeing Greer and Mollie finally work through their both their communication problems and their insecurities about eachother. They both seemed like fun people and worked really well together so I was rooting for them which is a generally good thing to be doing for a central couple in a romance.

The town as a whole is still looking for the trouble that still keeps popping up. This time around it hits hard as so many of the bad guys were trusted community members. It starts out with Mollie and Carter, Mollie who everyone is mad at for ignoring her mate causing Greer to not be well and start on the fading process. Quickly that mess is cleared up, a good thing, but then as everyone investigates each clue leads them to betrayal after betrayal. By the end of the book it looks like they have figured things out and things are looking up because Iva is back.

I’ve been putting off reading this for quite some time and the reason for it is that I keep forgetting about it. Although, what endears me in the first place are the right amount of mixed of what I want in a story.

Supernatural: ✓
Elemental: ✓
Investigations: ✓
Love story on the side: ✓

Well, I didn’t quite get what I was getting into before I started reading. It’s the fourth in the series and it actually slipped my mind to read the books before this. Stupid, I know. But still, I get into reading with only ‘here goes’ on my mind.

It was a new world I’ve delve into. And it was, at first quite overwhelming with getting to know the characters and keeping in mind who’s who and who’s with and what he/she is. I had of course a hard time getting everything all at once. But as I continue reading, the information isn’t quite staggering as I’ve thought it is. And all that have been going on my mind is that I have to read the first installment of this series and wait for the next book.

Mollie is a fire elemental investigating a lead about some investigations that is a hush-hush. The only other person who knows about the situation is her friend Carter who is posing as someone she is dating, even though she supposedly have a mate, I know, that part my mind is still quite stuck up on, and the Dr. who noticed the missing lab samples and the irregularities happening at the labs.

Greer is one of the ruling dryads, Mollie’s mate, but she rejected him, is pining. He is just waiting for the time to join his tree in communion and fade away because of the rejection and Mollie choosing Carter over him.

So, the adventure begins. And as I foray into this world of supernatural, I was enjoying imagining the world they have live in. And the dangers that have lurked and cost so much death and suffering. Not reading the installments before this one didn’t left me blind though, although there was no retelling of events that have already happened as much as I can tell other than the parts that need be. There’s no telling what will happen next nor the things that they are thinking. Nor what they will discover with their investigations, not even the motives which leave me frustrated actually.

But aside from hidden agendas, and search for answers, I enjoyed the play with RPGs, Xbox and the sarcastic humor which of course I didn’t get but enjoyed. They were dorks but they were still cute with their banters.

All in all, I enjoyed my reading adventure and I’m sure to get to the next book ASAP.

Supernaturally good!

I love reading a book where the characters make me want to join right in alongside them and this was definitely one of them! Maggie and Greer are geeks. Funny, serious, dedicated, loving, quirky and maybe, just a little, supernatural. Okay, a lot. And so is the town where they live and the people they call friends and neighbours. And they all get along, right? Yeah… not a chance! This was a new world where the supernatural were commonplace, the problems sounded a bit too familiar, yet the love was beautifully, very real.

This was a second chance for Mollie and Greer’s relationship even as it was surrounded by a murder mystery and so much more. I LOVED these characters. Mollie was strong and stubborn but completely likable as she fought for herself and the well-being of everyone around her. Greer was this incredibly giving and selfless man who was sexy as all get out to boot. Not to be shallow but he was the complete package – funny, hot and protective in a way that sets the bar oh so high! Their ability to work together despite their differences, and in the face of chemistry neither could deny, was going to mean the difference between life and death. For everyone.

Surprisingly light-hearted in spots, the humour provided the perfect contrast to the very serious situations they faced over and over. This was a ‘finish in one read’, awesome kind of story that you don’t want to miss. A rolled up Lord of the Rings, Supernatural, Big Bang Theory, all the feels, type of awesome!

**Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Once upon a pining

In a magical world where supernatural creatures live the was a dryad. After he mistakenly rejects his true mate and begins pining away, he finds out that she has stumbled into danger, and he might be the only thing that can protect her.

This was a wonderful story with amazing characters. The plot twists and turns in interesting and unexpected ways. It is a page turner that you will not want to put down.

My only disappointment is that the next book is not yet published. I can’t wait to read about Yew!

Review

In my opinion this was the best in the series so far. I really liked Greer and Mollie, and I thought that Bell gave excellent descriptions of their power, what they involved and how they used them (the lack of clarity about this in previous novels left me rather confused). I also really liked the way the Van Helsing/Demon plot is building and can't wait to see what will happen in Iva and Noah's book when, presumably there will be the final showdown. The only part that left me dissatisfied was the resolution of the attacks in Maggie's Grove that formed the plot of this book. It seemed that we were told why the attacks DIDN'T happen, but not why they DID (I know this doesn't seem to make sense, but hopefully when you read the book it will!) The excellent writing involved in shaping the characters and the Van Helsing plot was such that this didn't really affect my overall enjoyment of the story, also I presume there's a chance that these points will be clarified in the next book. Highly recommended.

***A gifted copy was provided by NETGALLEY for my honest review******

This is book 4 of the Maggie’s Grove series and it just keeps getting better. This is Mollie Ferguson and Greer Berkley story. Mollie is a Fire element and Greer is a dryad.
Mollie has come up on the bad side of a group of enraged shifter wolves. She knows there is something wrong in town and she has been doing some investigating and that has made people mad and so they are upset with her and that has put her on their “hit list”. There is this plot that could destroy her town and she is trying to get to the root of it all before she became public enemy #1. But when a beloved pack member is killed, everyone thinks she's the murderer, she turns in fear to the only one she knows she can trust—Greer- her true mate that rejected. His presence renews those the flames of lust, yearning for things that she misses about him and makes her wishes that she chose differently.
Greer is dying. When Mollie left, his true mate & lover didn’t take him or his love, it turned his leaves of his birch to autumn BUT he will not allow himself to fade off to the sunset until he makes sure his true love is safe and she will not be harmed. Everyone knows Greer as the healer but no one knows his true power but they are going to see him in action now that his true mate has been harmed and threatened.
Greer and Mollie must complete her investigation and clear her name before the pack demands vengeance. Time is running out to clear her name and to know each other's touch at last, the only chance is now, before it's too late for Greer.

This is a great story, the heat is there, the chemistry and I seeing Greer in action . Mollie is a spunky lady and how she does what she does for the town and why she felt she wasn’t good enough for Greer . The emotions were wonderful to read and it really grabs you; the action was fantastic- the twists and turns keep you going until the last. I also love the secondary cast of characters. This author has a gift for writing and I cannot wait to read what she has next.

I can’t say that I remember reading anything by Dana Marie Bell before reading Song of Midnight Embers. This is fourth in a series of paranormal books taking place in Maggie’s Grove. The main character, Greer, a dryad has three siblings which I assume are the main characters in the first three books since they all have mates. I admit I was confused in the beginning with all these characters but found that when the focus is on Greer and Mollie, his unclaimed mate, the story is captivating. Besides their story, there is the bigger one of political intrigue with enemies out to control if not destroy the paranormals, not just in the town of Maggie’s Grove but the entire USA it seems.

Since this bigger story is building up to a show down, I wish I had read the first three books in the series. Overall the story is easy to follow so it could be considered a stand-alone but personally I would like to see how the danger had started. That doesn’t affect how I rate this book, the author wrote all about that in the other books I should have read first.

Now to this story, the plot is complex, moving at a fairly fast pace. There is no the time to be bored when reading this. The characters, time and place are excellently described so that I have a clear picture in my mind of these very varied creatures and where they lived. Greer and Mollie are complicated, strong, capable individuals with different abilities. I would never have imagined a forest dryad mating with a fire elemental but personality wise they seemed suited for each other. They do scorch the words right off the page when they connect! They end up investigating the betrayal involved in the political upheaval among the wolf shifters when not scorching the pages.

They do find their happily ever after at the books end, but the bigger plot only thickens. While it is not a true cliffhanger, it leaves you knowing that more will be coming before the final battle.

I stand by my review of an other book of hers, and it's uncanny how much my thoughts were similar.

Bland doesn't even cover my experience with this novel. I can't say it's a bad book, but unfortunately neither I can say there's something good.

Plot is ..Plot is. So are the characters. Every single facet of this book is shallow. Not even a lazy afternoon made this story a nice way to spend time.

This author and I are never going to be on the same wavelength. :)

Boring, bland. And honestly pretty dumb, the way TV movies with kids as heroes are, those who mimic the adult big blockbuster action hit. The 10yo saving the day during Armageddon. The age of this book MC is more or less the same. 10yo max.:)

Another really good one for this series. One of the things I like about these books is that the characters are seriously quirky and fun even in the midst of all the crazy that goes on around them. This book is no exception.

It is possible that Greer is my favorite character in this series. His sense of humor and play is endearing and contagious. I wasn't as big of a fan of the back and forth doubts between him and Mollie, but that didn't seem to last too long so it didn't hamper my enjoyment of the book.

I'd definitely like to see an end to the demon involvement and have something a bit new for the characters of Maggie's Grove to deal with for a change, but it looks like it is something that may be there for the long haul of the series.

Fire elemental Mollie Ferguson has been ignoring Greer Berkley, dryad. Mollie and Greer are unbonded mates, and miscommunication ruins things. He has reached a point of no return, and wants to fade. Mollie doesn't realize that secrets and lies can offer deadly consequences. Will Greer help her? Will Mollie and Greer ever mate?

Who is causing the supernatural's problems?

Song of Midnight Embers (Maggie's Grove Series, Book 4) is a 4 star read by Dana Marie Bell. Read the story and discover new memories.

Greer lives in Maggie’s Grove and is a dryad. Greer has an unclaimed mate named Mollie. Molly is a fire element. Mollie has been doing some investigating and is making some people mad. She also got on the wrong side of some shapeshifter wolves. One of the well liked wolves was killed and everyone is blaming Mollie. Maggie turned to Greer who she had rejected and it is killing Greer. But he would protect Mollie with his dying breath.
I really enjoyed this story and plot. There is a lot of suspense and twists and action. I loved the character of Mollie as well as Greer and the twists and turns they went through. I recommend.

Stakes are much higher in this one, as we get closer to the big bad. Mollie and Greer finally get together, but it seemed a little too easy for me - there wasn't enough explanation and apologizing for past assumptions. Mollie was really doubtful of his feelings for her through a good half of the book, and always seemed on the verge of telling him she'd loved him since high school, but never got around to saying so! I did like that they bonded over nerdy things, that Mollie was ready to back up Greer in any kind of situation and he was smart enough not to hold her back.

Of course Iva wakes up in the epilogue of this, so I'm assuming she and Noah will be the next (final?) book.

Betrayal by members of Noah's pack, have Maggie's grove searching for answers as more die.

It did not disappoint. This is not a stand alone. You have to have read prior books to follow this story and the character relationships. Ms. Bell does a great job of recapping.

To help clear her name, Mollie is forced to turn to dryad Greer, the mate who rejected her. Together, can Mollie and Greer work together to solve the murder before Mollie is the next victim?
