Cool, fun to read book. I must say I am amazed by how well Jules Verne pictures the culture in Anatolia and Balkans.

Couple of Dutchmen in Istanbul....
Hilarious book with a hilarious protagonist Keraban who's supposed to be a Turkish merchant/ a businessman. Very stingy one, cheap. Volume 1 and 2 are equally entertaining and page turning...
Nevertheless I must underline some strange facts about the book. The author whom we call an armchair fictionist, dear Jules Verne, has gone completely by the map and only map so he's got all the cartographic facts correct but the rest is all wrong. Characters are supposed to be Turkish but not the names, actually I never heard such a name in my life, customs incorrect, social life also. The story might as well have been set up in another land but I have a feeling that Verne wanted the Bosphorus for obvious reasons. The Marmara Region makes a perfect setting for the journey :)

Bir kere bu bir Jules Verne kitabı ve bizim diyarlarda geçiyor. Başlı başına alıp okuma sebebi. Gezi yazılarını severim, Keraban Ağa'nın yolculuğu da oldukça hızlı tempo ile ilerliyor. Kitabın çevirisi de tatmin etti beni. Bu arada kitabın ikinci cildini arıyorum, bulan gören duyan varsa iletişime geçerse sevinirim.

10 para ödememek için Balkanlar,Karadeniz ve Anadolu dolaşarak İstanbul Avrupa Yakasından Anadolu Yakası'nda geçen bir adam
Geleneklerine sahip çıkan bu karakteri sırf bu bağlılığından dolayı çok fazla abartılmıştır. Fakat akıcı dili ve ayrıntılı betimlemeleriyle rahat bir okuma sağlamaktadır.

When I was a kid, I've used to read a lot of Jules Verne and I liked it a lot. I still enjoy it now, but I picked this one specially to get my rusted French to a more reasonable level. And I discovered amazed that I can understand pretty much 60-70% of it without looking too often in the dictionary. I will put it aside for now and continue with other novels in French until I get at a better level.

Bu kitabı ilk kez Orhan Pamuk'un Kara Kitap adlı eserinde okumuştum. İyi ki almışım kitabı.Çok eğlenceliydi. o zamanki Osmanlı Topraklarında dolaşmak Keraban ve arkadaşlarının hikayesini okumak çok güzeldi. tavsiye ediyorum.

Jules Verne bu sefer Türkiye topraklarında! Türkiye'de geçen bir macerayı konu edindiğini daha önce hiç duymamıştım. Bilim kurgudan ziyade coğrafi ve kültürel anlatımı yoğun bir kitap.
