The Patchwork Girl: They shattered her life like glass... could she put herself back together?

The world of abuse and grooming gangs couldn't have seemed further away from Kate's start in life but, as so many young women now know, that matters little.
For Kate it was a situation that came out of the blue when, aged 18 and at college, her home life deteriorated and she found herself in supported housing for homeless teenagers in Telford.
That's where she came into contact with a gang who were grooming young girls for sex, who threatened her with violence if she went to the police. It was the beginning of a cycle of serial and brutal abuse and repeated rape that is almost impossible to imagine.
Kate is now a trained Mental Health Nurse in a secure unit which includes working with sex offenders. She's become highly skilled in what she does, having an in-depth and first-hand knowledge of the thought processes of groomers.

This is one of those books that will stay with me for a very long time.
As someone who has experienced sexual assault and gone through the court process myself, I found this story incredibly powerful and painfully relatable at times. The author captures the reality of trauma in a way that felt honest and authentic, without ever reducing the survivor to what happened to her.
What stood out most to me was how accurately the book portrayed the lasting impact of trauma and the complicated emotions that come with trying to rebuild your life afterwards. There were moments that were difficult to read because they felt so real, but those were also the moments that made me feel seen.
Beyond my personal connection to the story, this was a beautifully written book with characters I genuinely cared about. It handled a sensitive subject with compassion, nuance, and understanding.
This won't be an easy read for everyone, but for me it was an important one.

Horrific, yet hopeful. A gripping account.
On starting this I thought: Yet another drugs, county lines, abuse theme. Have I read too many of these types of books in a short space of time? Should I read something lighter? But I kept being pulled back to it.
It goes back to earlier; before the events; her childhood and upbringing. I loved all the backstory; the normal stuff, before the terrible happenings to come. A normal family and childhood. Then things changed.
It was easy and quick to read, and kept my interest. Very readable, well put-together, balancing bad times with happier memories; childhood scenes etc. But there are awful circumstances. Truly shocking. It sounds wrong to say it was an easy read-because the circumstances were so horribly hard, but it really was. It was written in a conversational style, as if the author was sat there telling her story to me, and I just couldn't tear my eyes away as I kept on turning the pages, frantically hoping things would get better for this girl.
A bit different to the others I've read in this genre, unpredictable. An excellent and very powerful account.

I couldn’t put this book down. Gripping, haunting and astonishing open account of someone who has been through the worst experiences imaginable and come out the other side and not let it dim her light. I would 100% recommend this book.

Couldn’t put it down. This book is so well written, it’s written like no other book of this genre, with the professional commentary the author who has experienced the trauma now that she is trained in mental health and on her way to becoming a trauma expert. It makes such an interesting read.
Anyone interested in psychology of a victim or the key to overcoming the lasting mental health effects of trauma will love this book. A great book for both professionals, survivors and every day people. Highly recommended.
