Some women fall in love. Carmen learned how to survive it.
She wanted the man with power, the life that came with him, the kind of love that looked like protection and felt like possession. And for a moment… she had it. But love doesn’t always choose you back.
Caught between the man she fought to keep and the one who reminds her of who she used to be, Carmen makes a choice that will cost her everything. Her heart. Her children. Herself.
The worst part is she knows she’s wrong… and does it anyway.

Aja!!!! You wrote the hell outta this thang ok??? 🥰 I went into Carmen's read indifferent, as I knew the pain, chaos, and trauma that she caused in the lives of Smoke, Eli, and Sarai. However, I wanted, no needed to hear her side so I could make an informed decision if I still disliked her or not. Maaannn, did she have a story to tell. Whew.... 😮🤯
I believe Carmen's life was shaped for her long before she had an opportunity to understand it, or reconcile what happened to her. Dealing with her mother's absence as she worked tirelessly to provide for her and her siblings. Her father's abandonment left her longing for the attention and love of a man. Being taken advantage of by someone who was supposed to protect her, made her grow up well before her time. Lastly, her smarts and beauty also contributed to the complications of her rise and fall.
Carmen was smart and used her brains to outwit those around her while she hustled. Her beauty stopped men in their tracks, and she used the opportunity to pounce, getting what she wanted from them. She believed with those two traits nothing could stop her, and she would be able to use them to get all that her heart desired. Then she encounters Smoke.... Carmen immediately knew that he was the man, and she needed to get him to "see" her, so she could use her feminine wiles to woo him. Well, she got part of her wish. She enticed Smoke and pulled him into her web but quickly realized that all the glitter she saw in Smoke, was not gold. She wanted to be cherished and feel needed, but that just wasn't who Smoke was. She had ample opportunity to walk away as he showed her time and time again, who he was, but she assumed that she could change him into the man she craved. When life wasn't going her way the conniving and manipulation came out to play. This woman crept from the frying pan into the fire! 😮🤦🏿♀️ I understood that Carmen felt unloved, unappreciated, and lonely but ma'am you chased HIM!! Knowing what he had going on at home, in the streets, and cross town. Then when it got rough you wanna play dirty! 🤬
Miss Sadie and your momma tried to warn you about moving the way you were, as they could see you plotting before anything ever happened. But yo hard head ass just had to do things your way, loud and wrong until there was no way out. 😤 I already felt for Eli and Sarai as they dealt with Carmen's abandonment. But learning the how and why she did it in detail was more heartbreaking! 💔
Carmen's read helped me understand Smoke so much better. I had been giving him the 👀since his book for leaving Zora and starting a new family the way he did. But honey you opened my eyes right on up! 🤣 Smoke knew he wasn't a good man, but he would always provide and protect those he cared for. He showed love in the only way he knew how with power, protection, and money. Learning the real reason, he left Zora behind, and the rationale why he got with Carmen and stayed. AND that he knew all about Carmen's deception blew my damn mind! Cause what??? You knew and kept that in all that time? 🤯😮
Although I still don't like Carmen, I can applaud her for coming back, albeit too little too late. She didn't try to redeem herself as she knew that was impossible. However, she did at least want to give her family some closure about the decisions she made that caused the pain in their lives.
P.S.- Thank you for shedding light on the drugs and deaths in Club Passion. I've been waiting to learn that information for a minute! 🤣 I have so many feelings floating through my mind right now and know that Carmen will be living with me for a while to come! Great job Aja!!👍🏿👍🏿
The story took me through it and back. Carmen's needy, very needy personality felt like an old friend who used to remind me how special she was. It was easy to recognize her mostly overendulgent personality flaws. With that said, she made my heart ache with her pain. We were told this story was not for the faint of heart. The story had so many layers. We already had some details about Smoke from his story a few years ago. This version added more to his depth. Carmen's story's ending was expected and anticipated, yet it was still devastating in the end. I highly recommend this story. For a better reading experience, you should read the Enigma series first.
Carmen, Carmen, Carmen...Where do I begin? First, let me say..I've never not loved a book by Aja..NEVER..She is one of my favorite authors...created Smoke, one of my favorite characters ...and The Enigma Series, one of my favorite series... I've actually lost count as to how many times I've read that series...where, by the way, I met this character, named Carmen....💜🌼 The truth is, I didn't really wanna read this book..for several reasons..I mean..Aja wrote it...and there was never any doubt I was gonna read it...I'm just saying I already didn't like the character ...and knowing she was taken out at the end of The Enigma Series...I knew, right out the gate, there was no happy ending for this chick ... and just from what I already knew about her...not the least of which was abandoning her children…and being Smoke’s ex-wife who screwed him over….I saw no redeeming qualities in this chick...Having said all that… I'm so glad I read the book anyway ...and here's why...💜🌼 Carmen telling her own story...albeit from the grave.. explained so much..Maybe, most importantly, for me, anyway...was what could have caused a mother to abandon her own children...I mean..what could possibly be the catalyst to trigger a mother to leave her babies..never to return...Much like Carmen..the answer is complicated...💜🌼 As with most of life..nothing is black and white...and Carmen lived her life all up in every shade of gray..because it's all she knew .. She was responsible for every bad decision she made...and every misstep she took... and the consequences of those actions determined the tragic trajectory of not just her life...but her children's lives, as well...The book gave us some insight as to why Carmen did the things she did...and that included leaving her children…and the simple truth is…she saw leaving them as the only way to keep them safe.. and I believe it came from a place of love (at least the only kind she knew) and I could feel her desperation.. and how she felt trapped....with only one way out...and that was without her kids...💜🌼 Carmen is maybe the realest character ever written...female character for sure...She is not your typical heroine...In fact..she thinks and moves more like a man....Obviously, she wants to be loved..don't we all?...She just had no idea how to get that kinda love...and I'm not sure she even believed she deserved it...but in the absence of that love, her basic need to be seen, listened to, respected, appreciated and needed, assumed control of her life ...and, in my opinion, that was the cause of most of her problems…💜🌼 Carmen was unapologetically who she was... She made a lotta bad decisions..and pretty much accepted responsibility for the consequences of those decisions ..She made no excuses for the life she's led...nor the person she was...But, here’s the thing…none of us wake up one morning and we're a bad person...We are all forged in the fire of both the decisions we've made and the hand we've been dealt... we have control over some of it ...and no control over the rest... At least, I no longer think she was just a "bad" person.. and if she was a victim...it was self inflicted...I don't believe anyone hurt Carmen more than Carmen herself...💜🌼 In many ways...Carmen is one of the hardest books I've ever read...Part of that is my attachment to Smoke…I will never not love Smoke...NEVER...and while I don't believe he is responsible for Carmen being Carmen... I had to face his human imperfections and his contribution to Carmen's betrayal..He may have had some love for Carmen...but he was never in love with her...never truly loved her as a man should love his woman...and the mother of his children...He obviously loved Eli and Sarai...but marrying Carmen had more to do with his love and protection of Zora and their girls...and that's the part I feel Smoke contributed to her downfall..Her realization that she'd never have that kind of love from Smoke.. and that she was basically a shield for the woman he truly loved ...that would be a hard pill for any woman to swallow...especially a woman like Carmen…but it also felt a little like Carmen's karma for taking another woman's man ... Like I said...nothing is black and white...💜🌼 I know I say this a lot..but this truly is one of the best books Aja has written..if not THE best...and it was one of the hardest books for me to review...because my mind is all over the place..and I'm still trying to organize my thoughts..but one thing I'm 100% sure of is...Aja can write the $#it outta a book…and I, obviously, recommend this one...but The Soul Series, The Enigma Series and all of the Enigma Origins Series...which now includes Carmen..are intrinsically connected and I truly believe they must be read to see the whole picture of who Carmen was and how she came to be...💜🌼 I still don't love the character...but at least I understand her a little better now...No one forced her to go down the path she travelled…but she was human and did the best she could with what she had and what she knew…and that's all any of us can do...Just read the freaking book...💜🌼
I wasn't sure how to feel about the release of Carmen's story but after finishing it, it makes me want to reread the entire series and insert her perspective. Nothing about Carmen is black and white, instead there are a lot of shades of gray that will have you view her as both villian and victim, antagonist and protagonist. Carmen story is not polished, it is instead raw and unflinching and in some ways relentless. You could tell from the onset while Carmen was encased in unmatched beauty, back to back trauma shaped in character and if "by any means necessary " was a person, Carmen was it. This author held nothing back and the wordsmith was mastery. You can feel the emotions and conflicting thoughts emerged right off the pages because the author tapped into all five senses and cognition. This book challenged your psyche and as a woman who recently endured betrayal, deception, and divorce parts of me saw Carmen as a woman wanting to be loved but moreover a woman needed to be visible. Whew! This book will remain with me for a long time. I really want to sit down with the author and talk in detail about this book because wow, this book was amazing! While this author knows how to write romance, this genre, this trope, fits her perfectly!
Wow! Carmen is the story I didn't know I needed. We get to see an in-depth view of who she is and learn why she made the decisions that shaped who Eli and Sarai became.
When I started this I didn't want to sympathize with her because of the choices she made. But when I sat with it I realized she was a broken woman wanting what most women want. To be seen. To be loved. To be wanted. To be needed. She just went about it the wrong way.
Life taught her early to keep her mouth shut so she didn't know how to communicate with Smoke. Instead she sought what she needed from someone who played on her insecurities and used her to his advantage. By the time she realized who Bear was and what he was doing, it was too late. The damage had been done.
Now she's left making the ultimate sacrifice to save her children.
Carmen wasn't innocent by any means. She knew what she was doing was wrong. But I can see why she did it.
This was a fitting end to the Enigma series.
Thank you Aja for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
First, let me say “Thank you, Aja!” for finally giving us the full story of Carmen. This sheds a whole new light on who she really is—the real Carmen… flaws and all.
(Side Note: To truly appreciate her journey, I highly recommend reading The Enigma Series and The Soulmates Series for the full backstory!)
Carmen’s life was anything but easy. Her childhood, shaped by her father and the many situations that followed her into adulthood, created a path filled with challenges. And yet, Carmen is a survivor—doing what she felt she had to do to make it through.
She didn’t make excuses… she simply loved the best way she knew how.
Now, I’m going to pause right here… because this is a story you need to experience for yourself. Just know—it speaks volumes, and you may even realize that you know a Carmen… or two.
This author has delivered another masterpiece to add to an already amazing series. It’s moving, powerful, honest, and truly awe-inspiring.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ARC Review⭐️⭐️⭐️ Please note: THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY. THERE IS NO HEA. Also, please make sure you READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.
Carmen is a woman whose life began with hardship, and the choices she made along the way only made things more difficult. In search of love, she became involved with Smoke, looking for something real in all the wrong places. Even after getting the man she wanted, her decisions continued to lead her down a path that ultimately ended in her demise. This isn’t a soft or fluffy read. It’s a necessary story—one that shows how her choices impacted not only her life, but the lives of those around her for years to come. It’s a reminder that love doesn’t always come wrapped in pretty paper and neat bows. Sometimes, it’s dysfunctional, messy, and deeply rooted in trauma.
#BookReview Carmen by Aja didn’t just touch me… she found the places I don’t speak about.
The quiet corners. The hidden rooms. The parts of me that learned how to survive before they ever learned how to live.
This story didn’t ask permission. It didn’t knock. It entered.
Soft… but certain. Loud… in that undeniable way truth always is.
The kind of truth that settles into your bones not asking you to understand it, just demanding that you feel it.
And I did.
I felt Carmen in the in between spaces where survival wears the mask of strength, where choices aren’t always choices, just necessary acts of becoming.
This book lives in memory. In justification. In the quiet whispers of “I did what I had to do.”
Carmen is transition. It is sacrifice. It is love showing up in unfamiliar forms so unfamiliar it feels strange… like hope trying to remember its own name.
And still… it dances.
On the edge of healing. On the edge of becoming. On the edge of a woman reclaiming herself piece by piece.
Aja didn’t just write this story she bled into it.
And if you’ve ever had to rebuild yourself from what tried to break you…
Superbly written backstory that describe 'Carmen' ...the woman, the wife and the mother -you explaining why it all started and ended with her existence really kept me engaged to the very last page and word. I enjoyed this detailed patient look at Carmen desire to be seen through good, bad and sometime unpredictable personality and decisions. I am excited about rereading the other characters in this series of books with a new insight and the whys.
You could feel the pain and hurt that Carmen lived. The issues of her parents relationship blinded her on what look for or how to wait for love. This was almost to painful to read.
