I enjoyed the story. I think it’s a great concept and a great world. I wish it was longer. While I know it’s meant to be a fast read, I wish it weren’t quite so fast. It felt like some of the plot was rushed. I would have loved to get to know the characters a bit more before they were thrown into the thick of everything. It also didn’t allow for some of the plot to be explained. For example, why not say their name? They never explain that… I understand a fear, but why not flat out warn people entering the town. There was no real reason not to. Also, I understand that people in the town are financially stuck and can’t leave, but you are telling me that no government has any clue nor do they want to capture these creatures to do research? I just wish some of the plot points (and questions about the plot points) were explained a bit more and didn’t rely on plot armor. All of this said, I did genuinely enjoy the book and would recommend to a horror/thriller reader, I just wish I had a bit more developed in the story to cling onto. I think that the author is incredibly talented and I will read more of what they have written, this just felt rushed. I am hoping for an edited (extended) re-write.
This was such a fun and fast read. I love the idea of an entire town basically held hostage by skin walkers to the point where they treat it as everyday life. Carter is a licensed Medium and YouTuber who doesn't particularly believe in the supernatural, but gets more than he bargained for aftering accepting a job from an older woman. He's thrust into the heart of an altercation with cryptids and members of the town. Snyder had a great ability to make you really care for these characters in the brief time you're with them. I would absolutely love to see this become a series! If you monsters and small towns are your thing, then Gabrielle Snyder's Devil's Run is for you.
