The Pattern #2

When the Pattern Collides: A Sci-Fi Thriller

Rate this book
Book 2 of The Pattern Series.

The mission launched. The world watched. Now the real battle begins.

Dr. Morgan Hale is not the same woman who left Earth. Whatever happened to her in the dark has made her something the world does not yet have a word for, and powerful people are already deciding whether she is an asset or a problem.

Dr. Gianna Moretti is holding a forty-one-nation alliance together with nothing but her voice and her math. Vice Admiral Thomas Harlan sent twelve souls into the unknown, and now the world he answers for is turning on itself. Between them sits a hard the mission is only half the problem.

Eli Navarro, still recovering from wounds that nearly killed him, has found something woven into every phone and every system on the planet. Something that has been listening for a very long time. And the closer anyone gets to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes to know it.

The threat is not just out there. Some of it has been here all along.

For readers who loved The Expanse, Daniel Suarez's Influx, and Tom Clancy's The Sum of All Fears.

When the Pattern Collides is the second book in The Pattern Series and picks up immediately after the events of When the Pattern Breaks. For the full experience, start with Book 1, available now in eBook, paperback, and audiobook.

Book 3, When the Pattern Unites, coming Spring/Summer 2027.

A Deeper Alliance And New Threat...

When The Pattern Collides, book 2 in the Pattern series, continues the story of Dr. Morgan Hale and the mission to stop the moon Io from impacting Earth and eliminating all life on it. The plot continues to be thought provoking and very exciting, not an easy balance. 6/18/27 cannot come soon enough! Book 2 is every bit as good as book 1 and continues making the remarkably unlikely seem everyday! Overall, 5/5 stars! Highly recommended for any reader looking for a thoughtful and riveting reading experience!

A great sequel to a compelling hook in the first book! I loved the premise of the first book, and this took all of those interesting tendrils and complicated them.

I personally could have done without the romance, but I can recognize that those portions were well done and didn’t interfere with the story being told. That’s just my preference for crunchy sci fi and non-romantic interpersonal conflict though.

The characters sometimes feel a little preachy, and I can’t quite tell if I’m supposed to think they are a politician saying politician things or if they are a genuinely “good person” who’s a little annoying about it, but that’s also part of the complexity of humans, I suppose.

Real SCIENCE fiction. Deals with the “tic tac” US Air Force videos of clearly alien technology. It offers a great mix of characters and science as the characters uncover more about this phenomenon and it expands dramatically to abroad earth survival situation. There are two books, this is the second of them. The third book is due in a year. Highly recommended this is so much more than a typical spaceship/fighting across the galaxy kind of sci-fi.

I received an ARC from Charles who asked me to read and review same.

Spoiler alert - this book is fantastic. Book 1 introduces you to the possibility of [and no, I didn't leave anything out of this sentence]. Book 2 continues the story. However, just as you begin to think you know where the story is headed, it suddenly takes a left turn and introduces you to a plot within a plot that just pulls you in deeper.

Charles, if you read this - I've kept this review light as I don't want to spoil the pattern for future readers. Thanks for trusting me. I can't wait for book 3!

Great story telling

I couldn't put it down until I knew what was happening next. I even cried when they made it back home. Not happy with the ending, but can't wait to see how it works out.

I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of the this book.

When the Pattern Collides picks up right where When the Pattern Breaks: A Sci-Fi Thriller left off. No preamble. No catching up. It just drops you in and takes off. (Pun intended!)

I'm going to be very vague about the story line as I don't want to reveal any spoilers. All your favorite characters are there from book one with the addition of new ones, that continue to expand the potential for this series. The culmination of a story line from book one, is satisfying, though it takes some perilous twists, turns and surprises to get there. There is also an additional twist that is revealed and it's something that has huge potential for causing major disruption around the world.

I enjoyed it immensely! More sci-fi fans definitely need to be reading C.J. Hale. I'm also eagerly await book 3. (Slated for 2027)

As a beta reader for the series, I can confidently say that Book 2, When the Pattern Collides, does not disappoint. Hale’s sequel delivers a compelling and thoughtfully constructed narrative centered on Earth’s impending destruction, as Io—one of Jupiter’s moons—races toward the planet on a catastrophic collision course.

One of the novel’s most engaging elements is the revelation of a previously unknown alien civilization that has existed beneath the ocean for millennia, adding both depth and complexity to the story. The author skillfully balances fast-paced action with moments of introspection, allowing the characters to feel fully realized and their choices genuinely impactful.

Picking up exactly where Book 1 leaves off, the narrative maintains its momentum while expanding the scope of the series. Overall, the novel stands out for its imaginative premise, cohesive storytelling, and its exploration of humanity’s resilience in the face of existential threat.

A fun read, blending human interest and action - adventure. Fictional science rather than hard science for the most part, once into the story line the plot holds a readers attention. It had been a year, or so since I read the first volume so it was like hopping on a high speed train as I read the first chapter of this one.
As with completing book one, I eagerly await the next episode... the sooner the better!

A note from the author.
Collides is the book where everything breaks loose: the world knows what's out there now, and the real fight is over what that means, fought from the White House to the bottom of the Pacific by people who don't all make it to the last page. I wrote it to move like a thriller and land like science fiction, the science kept honest, the tradecraft drawn from a career of real experience. Buckle in, trust no one with a screen near them, and thank you for reading. I read every review, so if this one kept you up past your bedtime, I'd love to hear about it.
