This is the first time I’ve read a book from the Techboys series, and I’m glad this story can be treated as a standalone.

Both James and Sadie have had a tough time, and they have had their own fair share of pain. Despite their current struggles, they end up living in the same apartment together (hello forced proximity) in a way to help each other out. Cue the sparks ⚡️ I love that these two were able to share the simple and intimate moments together, such as cooking. We watch them both grow together as they are also conquering their own demons.

Throughout the story, James’ struggle with his breakup is handled in a tender way. Not going to lie, James ex 😤😤😤 Alongside Sadie’s constant fear of her stepdad adds tension on each page for the reader. I did find some of the plot predictable, and I wanted a little bit more depth in some areas, such as the ending, but in saying that, this story is beautifully written. If you love a good romance where the couple are healing together, then this is the book for you.

Loved being back in this world. These stories are filled with depth and tackles some serious topics that the characters experience. But is always handled so well by Eve. This one was no exception. Once I started this book, I could not stop reading. It was a great escape from the outside world.

The book opens up with James contemplating suicide while trying to come to terms with a break up. We are introduced to Sadie when we see she is in an uncomfortable situation with her mom’s husband. Let’s just say they were both in a bad place. To help each other out, the move in together. This is a book about navigating the difficult stages of your life and how to make it to the end. Realizing all is not lost. There is more to life. Great story.

Given how much fast‑paced, filthy‑from‑page‑one smut I’ve been devouring lately, The Hero was such a refreshing shift in tempo. Instead of sprinting into the spice, Eve M. Riley slows everything down — letting chemistry bloom through friendship, dry humour, shared trauma, and the kind of gentle, everyday intimacy that hits harder than any explicit scene ever could.

This instalment follows two people who might genuinely have the worst luck imaginable… or the best, depending on how you look at fate.

James, freshly dumped by his childhood sweetheart, spirals into a dark, desperate place and attempts to take his own life. He survives — but the guilt that follows is crushing. He’s always been the caretaker, the dependable one, the man who never wants to burden anyone. Suddenly he is the one who needs help, and he has no idea how to sit with that.

Enter Des (absolute king of emotional intelligence) who clocks the warning signs immediately and refuses to let his friend drown. And because Des is a genius, he brings in Sadie — young developer, raised in the projects, shaped by hardship, and carrying her own quiet collection of scars. Sadie has worked for everything she has, pushing through dyslexia and a learning disability, and finding her place in the world through coding. She’s brilliant, determined, and so much softer than she lets herself believe.

And then — through a twist of circumstance — James and Sadie end up living together.

This is where the magic happens.

Watching these two fractured people slowly, slowly stitch themselves back together through simple acts of care was honestly beautiful. The slow burn is divine — simmering, tender, full of emotional weight. Sadie already has a crush on James, which adds this delicious undercurrent of longing to every interaction. And James? The way he becomes protective of her without even thinking about it… I melted. Fully melted.

Sadie’s past is heartbreaking — the inappropriate advances from her stepfather, the stalking, the violence — and James’s instinctive need to keep her safe is everything I love in a MMC. But what I adored even more is how she protects him right back. After his brush with death, she is hyper‑aware of his moods, his absences, his silences. They run to each other without hesitation. They are each other’s quiet heroes, and the title could not be more perfect.

Des deserves a medal for being the best friend ever, and Mr Karen the cat absolutely stole scenes like the chaotic little gremlin he is. And as for Jane… I wouldn’t wish her on my worst enemy. The obliviousness, the self‑absorption, the sheer audacity — I was screaming. Some people need a reality check; Jane needs a full‑blown intervention.

Overall, The Hero was a calm, emotional, heart‑filled read — the perfect way to close out my April reading. It’s tender, it’s healing, it’s quietly powerful. Thank you, Eve, for this ARC, and apologies that my review is fashionably late.

Sadie had just gotten home from her job as a coder at the tech company, Williams Security, when her stepfather, Jake, told her that her mom was spending the night at her aunt's.

He has always given her the creeps, and she generally ignored his comments because that was all there was to it. But, as she bent over the oven for their dinner, she could have sworn that he touched her butt. And when he leered at her, saying that since her mom was out for the night, they could have 'some fun', she knew she had to move out.

She has always given her mom the money that she made to help make ends meet, especially since Jake seemed more interested in smoking weed than actually working. But she was scared that now that she got a well-paying job, they would be kicked out or forced to pay more rent for the slum-like apartment they lived in in Queens.

Desperate to leave, Sadie packed some essentials in her ratty backpack and told Jake they were out of milk and needed to run to the store. When her boss told her that Jake had been hanging out at work, wanting money, she was luckily able to have her advance forwarded to another account, since her check had been sent to a joint account shared with her mom and Jake.

Luckily, she found a hostel not far from work to stay at for a few days until she figured out something else.

She was surprised and a bit nervous when one of the bosses called her into the conference room the next day. He wanted to see what she thought of her new job and when he found out she was looking for somewhere to stay, he excitedly told her that she could stay in his brownstone while he was away in Korea.

The only catch... one of her other bosses would be her roommate. James Royce, the man she couldn't even look in the eyes he was so gorgeous. And she was even more nervous when she figured out why Des was so insistent on her being there.

WOW! I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Although this book can be read as a standalone, this series circles around recurring characters, and I feel you will enjoy the book more with the other character backgrounds.

This story starts off with a very drunk James in a very depressive state of mind that could have gone horrifically wrong. Both James and Sadie have secrets, but moving into Des and Alex's place was just what they both needed.

This book is action-packed, very emotional, with some seriously screwed-up situations that they are trying to survive. I love all the books in this series, but James and Sadie's story might be my favorite.

This story addresses several triggering issues, including attempted suicide and abuse, so beware if that is an issue for you. Highly recommend.

The Hero by Eve M Riley is the 7th book in the Tech Boys series. It can be read as a standalone but it is worth reading all the books in this series.

James and Sadie's story is one of emotion, sorrow, heartbreak, and love. These two are both dealing with their fair share of trauma and turmoil. Sadie has fled an unsafe home with an even unsafer step father and Jame is dealing with heartbreak after an emotional break up. These two are forced together for a place to stay. Sadie is offered a brownstone to stay in while her boss is away in South Korea. The only catch on of the other bosses will also be there, James. There is a hint of forced proximity and forbidden desire here.

This story will pull on your heart strings, possibly make you question some things and overall make you fall in love with James and Sadie. Their story has depth. The characters are really well written and they experience some really great growth over the story timeline. These character are fragile from the start but they both have a lot of hope that things will get better. They spend the time making things better together. I really rooted for this couple. Despite their own messy situations and the imperfect way they came together; I could just tell they needed each other. The space in the story that is setting them up to come together is raw and emotional. Sometimes these are hard to get in a book and they can have the tendency of falling flat or being too predictable.

A small part of this story was a little predicable for me but not in a way that ruined it or took away from the story. Despite this one issue for me, the rest was great and worth it. The best part and probably what pushed my rating up a bit was that there was no miscommunication! We tend to find a lot of miscommunication in romance novels between the main characters, but no glaring miscommunications here. My rating is a 4.5 stars but I always round up and I don't feel like I am taking anything away from the potential readers by making this one 5 stars.

The Hero by Eve M. Riley is my first read from the author. Her writing style is definitely unique. She has an interesting way of storytelling. James and Sadie got connected under difficult circumstances but it made their connection really strong. The story deals with heartbreaking experiences and I loved to read how the characters grew and healed.

🖤 boss employee
🖤 friends to lovers.
🖤 roommate to lovers
🖤 forced proximity
🖤 trigger warning : depression, self harm, broken home, learning disability

Sadie needs a place to stay after her step father started harassing her for money and something more. She gets an unexpected offer from her boss Des to move in his apartment temporarily while he moves to South Korea for expansion of their tech start up company. Des needs someone to keep watch on his business partner and best friend James Royce who is having a mental breakdown after his girlfriend of a decade broke up with him and is in a new relationship. Sadie has a big crush on James but she is also afraid that her secrets will be out.

Sadie had a tough situation growing up. Poverty, dyslexia, bullying..she faced it all. But she pushed through it. She didnt get a chance to earn a traditional college degree but she taught herself and thats how she got the job as coding and software developer in the tech start up. But she is afraid that her lies about her qualification will be caught up. She can be shy and awkward but she is also so brave and she has a dry sense of humor. James had a professional relationship with her but when she moves in with him and he gets to know how brilliant she is, he starts falling for her. She is kind and hard working and has a very unique perspective on life. James didnt know he needed it. He was drowning in anger and shame and grief but Sadie showed him that he didn’t lose anything.. rather the loss was of his partner's. Jane is pretty unhinged. James doesn't like being all charming and extrovert. He loves his quiet life. But he can show his protective sides too. Sadie and James fit together so well. The author spent many chapters showing the individual changes and growth of the characters. She decided to go deep in the characters and their struggles. So the romance is a companion to that. It also has a suspenseful side that kept the plot interesting. You have to read it to understand why I keep on emphasising on the uniqueness of the storytelling

I was not prepared for The Hero by Eve M. Riley. The emotional depth it was about to put me through, and wow… I’m still sitting with it. This was my first book by this author, and I genuinely feel so blessed they reached out to me to ARC read this one, because it completely wrecked me in the best way. I’m calling it 4.5 stars, only because I need emotional recovery time, but honestly it hit like a full five in terms of impact, all kidding aside to me just felt a little off. I couldn't put my finger on it though. There’s a lot of darkness in this story, grief, trauma, survival but none without a purpose. Instead, it carefully shows how both characters are already on their own healing journeys before they even fully let each other in and that was emotional on its own. Watching that shift from solitude to shared strength felt incredibly intimate and real. And now I’m already thinking, yeah… I’ll absolutely be going back for more from this author.

James and Sadie’s story was so emotional I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever recover, and I mean that in the most loving way. You can feel how fragile they both are at the start, but also how much quiet hope exists in the small moments they build together late night meals, soft laughter, and the kind of comfort that doesn’t need big declarations. I found myself rooting for them so hard because their connection isn’t instant perfection, it’s messy, earned, and deeply human. When their pasts started crashing back in, I felt that tension in my chest like it was happening to me, and I couldn’t look away. This book really shows that healing isn’t linear, and sometimes it takes letting someone else see your broken pieces to begin putting them back together. If you love romance that leans raw, emotional, and rooted in growth, this one will stay with you long after the last page.

This rating was rounded up to a 5 stars because there isn't a 4.5 star available ❤️

"I want to treat you well...Perhaps a guy who treats you well would be another first."

"People misjudge her all the time. She's a quiet hero."

So this week I fell in love...with the beautifully written The Hero, by the exceptionally tenderhearted contemporary multi award winning romance author Eve M. Riley. James and Sadie have a permanent place in my heart.

The Hero starts with the worst moment in James life. On a roof top, broken hearted and very drunk. He doesn't know his quiet coworker Sadie's worst night is just beginning until she shows up at work with a bruised cheek. Lucky for both of them they have the most amazing "in every body's business" boss, Des.

Des offers James his apartment while he's away in Korea for work. But Des is worried about James after the scary roof moment. Finding out Sadie needs to leave her home situation he sets them up as roommates; hoping they can help each other.

But Des has another surprise for them...A rescue cat to foster. Mr. K is not a normal cat. He loves to jump and swim in the tub with you and swipe his tail over the stove. Why the name Mr. K? Oh it's a great story when you read the book!

Through cooking dinners, bike rides, caring for Mr. K, run ins with James' selfish ex and Sadie's violent past, these two kind quiet people find solace with one another and become true friends. It's a slow burn that earns its passion and rewards us with the most satisfying friends to lovers moment.

Here's the kicker. Yes, James is on the cover of The Hero, but it's nerdy code writing fantasy book reader Sadie that's his hero...or maybe they just save each other. So be your own hero and give yourself the gift of The Hero. It will save your heart.

*The Hero is part of the standalone interconnected Techboy Series. If you love romance this series is written for you.

I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Sadie & James
*
Supercute and steady love.
*
He breaks up with his highschool girlfriend (he was going to marry her). They were together for 12 years - yikes. He moves into the spare room but now she brought a new man to their appartment. You can imagine how a man can cope with that. He gets himself drunk and almost flings himself off of their building. Des (his bestie) finds him (technically the janitor does); moves all od James’s stuff out of his and Jane’s appartment and moves him into his place. But Des and his boyfriend are moving to Korea in less than a week. He needs to find a solution for his friend - someone to look after James. So when Sadie opens up to Des about needing money and living in a hostel he offers her the spare room in his appartment. Perfect roomate for James. The quiet girl no one looks at twice. Two troubled souls sharing a space. With mr. Karen of course.

Her stepdad finally crosses a line and she moves out of her mom’s place. She accepts Des's offer to move into his appartment and becomes James's roomate. The gorgeous man she works for and can’t look into his beautiful eyes.

This is a lovely story about two people that are broken in different ways. They get into a nice calm roomie routine and slowly fall in love. Well she had a crush on him beforehand anyway so Sadie was halfway there. They read and discuss books, she learns stuff and so does he.They have a lot of firsts together. What a team of two silent heroes right from the start. Even with crazy ex on the horizon.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was one of the calmest I've read. No major drama (ok, a little bit of drama) but no miscomunications, no usual plot twists or predictable things. Just pure coexisting and helping eachoter grow and overcome things while slowly falling for eachother.

There are slow burns that are frustrating. And then there are slow burns that feel inevitable, like watching two people orbit each other for so long that when they finally collide, you can't quite breathe.

The Hero is the second kind. James Royce, co-director of a tech startup, is quietly falling apart after a breakup that nearly cost him everything. Sadie Turner, his newest developer, is invisible by choice, she's a girl from the Queens projects who taught herself to code and lied on her resume because she had no other way in. They end up sharing an apartment by accident, and what follows is one of the most tender, devastating, beautifully observed love stories I've read this year.

Eve M. Riley doesn't rush anything. Every scene earns its weight. The hug in the dark. The first coffee shop. James lying to protect Sadie before he even knows her properly, and the way she grabs his arm in shock, feeling every inch of his sleeve against her palm. This book understands that the smallest gestures carry the most freight.

What elevates it beyond standard workplace romance: the mental health rep is handled with real care, Sadie's class background is never played for pity, and the dual POV lets you watch two people fall in love while each is convinced the other couldn't possibly feel the same. When they finally say it out loud? I put my kindle down. I stared at the wall. I came back ten minutes later and read it again.

Read this if: slow burns make you spiral in the best way / you need a healing read that doesn't minimize the hurt / you believe quiet love is the most powerful kind.

CW: suicide attempt (opening), assault, reference to sexual assault, domestic abuse

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

James Royce and Sadie Turner are both hiding painful secrets. As programmers in New York City, their jobs are demanding, but sometimes the code is the only thing that makes sense. James is reeling from a nasty breakup, and Sadie is trying to move on from a difficult past. When an apartment opens up with two bedrooms, it's an opportunity for both to start fresh and heal. They expected friendship, but they found someone who made them believe in themselves and demand better. But with their pasts both catching up to them, can they ever be more than friends, or is the damage too great to overcome?

This was my first book in The Techboys series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. James and Sadie both go through some true emotional growth in this book, and it was amazing to watch them heal together. I really felt like I watched them grow into their best selves. This book dealt with some darker topics, so please check the trigger warnings, but this made me all the more invested in the story. I so wanted to see them succeed and find the forgiveness they deserved. There are some suspense elements in the book, and the last few chapters, in particular, had me on the edge of my seat. I will have to go back and read the earlier books in this series, as I truly enjoyed this one. The powerful healing and romance that developed naturally were spot-on.

The Hero is book seven in The Techboys series - however, it can be read as a standalone. This is the first book I've read from the series, but honestly I enjoyed it so much that I plan on going back and reading some of the others.

Two of my absolutely fav tropes are hurt/comfort and forced proximity, and those are a HUGE part of the storyline here. Our FMC, Sadie, needs a new place to stay after issues with her gross & abusive stepdad come to a head one night while her mom was out of the apartment.

Meanwhile, our MMC James (part owner of the company Sadie works for) is going through a traumatic breakup after a 12-year relationship. He gets incredibly drunk and kind of botches a suicide attempt via jumping, but still ends up injured. Enter the forced proximity - a mutual coworker has Sadie move in with James to watch over him.

What I really loved about this book is that their love story isn't rushed. James and Sadie both take the time to heal from their issues, before they even really fully consider jumping into any kind of a relationship. They're both dealing with so much - grief, trauma, guilt - and we get to see them help each other through it and being happy again. There's no huge plot twists, no crazy miscommunication drama, just two people working on real life problems and learning to love each other.

I absolutely recommend this one if you're into: forced proximity, hurt/comfort, slow burn, healing from trauma, workplace romance, emotional reads, animal sidekicks, & multiple POVs

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5/5)

The Hero is one of those emotionally heavy romances that settles into your chest and stays there long after you’ve finished.

James and Sadie are both carrying more than their fair share of pain, and the story doesn’t shy away from that. James’s struggle after surviving such a dark moment is handled with a quiet tenderness that feels very real, while Sadie’s constant fear and need to hide adds this steady undercurrent of tension throughout the book. Their connection builds slowly—through small, intimate moments like late-night conversations and cooking together—and that softness makes their relationship feel earned rather than rushed.

What really stood out to me was how the story balanced that gentleness with the looming weight of their pasts. There’s always this sense that something is about to unravel, and when it does, it hits hard. The external conflicts—James’s manipulative ex and Sadie’s dangerous home situation—raise the stakes without overshadowing the emotional core of the story.

The only reason this isn’t a full 5 stars for me is that parts of the plot felt a bit predictable, and I wanted just a little more depth in certain moments, especially toward the resolution. Still, the emotional payoff absolutely delivers.

If you enjoy romances that lean into healing, found safety, and two people learning how to live again—not just love—this one is definitely worth picking up.

The Hero: The Worst Night of His Life Was the Beginning of Hers is a deeply emotional and beautifully written romance that explores trauma, healing, vulnerability, and the transformative power of human connection. Eve M. Riley delivers a raw and heartfelt story that balances emotional intensity with tenderness, creating a romance that feels both authentic and profoundly moving.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is the emotional complexity of James Royce and Sadie Turner. Both characters carry deep emotional wounds, and their gradual journey toward trust, safety, and healing is portrayed with sensitivity and realism. The quiet moments they share cooking together, laughing, and simply existing in each other’s presence become some of the most powerful parts of the story because of how naturally their connection develops.

Riley also handles heavier themes with emotional care while maintaining strong romantic tension and suspense throughout. The threats from James’s manipulative ex and Sadie’s dangerous past create a constant undercurrent of tension that keeps readers emotionally invested in both the romance and the characters’ survival.

Heartbreaking, hopeful, and emotionally unforgettable, The Hero is a compelling contemporary romance that will strongly resonate with readers who appreciate emotionally driven love stories centered around healing, resilience, and second chances.

Sadie is working in a tech company, and she’s harboring a crush on her boss and a secret that could get her fired. James is getting over a nasty breakup and wondering what happened to his relationship. When the two move into an apartment together - strictly as roommates - things start to heat up.

Tropes:

•Boss/Employee
•Close Proximity
•Friends to Lovers
•Roommates
•Heroine in Danger
•Romantic Suspense
•A Swimming Cat 🐈‍⬛

This is the first Eve M. Riley book I’ve read, and it is not at all what I expected - in the best possible way! The Hero is fantastic! Sadie is charming and secretly strong. James is supportive and caring of Sadie. The characters in this book are great, the world building is perfect, and the plot is excellent. Jane, James’s ex-girlfriend is an exceptionally written character whom I really hated. I love how James and Sadie’s relationship moves from friends to lovers so sweetly. The scenes between Sadie and her stepfather are harrowing and creepy. James is protective of Sadie and nonjudgmental of her background.

I could not be more happy I read this book. Even though it’s number 7 in a series I have not read, it was a great read that I had no trouble getting into and understanding. Of course now I want to go back and read books 1 - 6. Read The Hero and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss!

As a huge fan of the Tech boys series - I was excited to read the next book. This can be read standalone (but the whole series is amazing so read them if you can)

The Hero was just as enthralling as the other books in this series. Sadie and James are just wonderful characters who after awful events in hell their lives end up in a forced proximity situation and you realise how amazing they are but would be even better together. - only slightly complicated by James being her boss!!
James is broken hearted and lost after splitting up with his childhood sweetheart. Now she is a character - I love how she was written and she has your back up straight away!! Sadie fighting with money troubles as she gives all her money to her mum’s useless partner. No spoilers but I love the way this story unfurls - haven’t wanted a couple to get together so much!!
I could not put this down and read this over 2 days with a late night to finish. Eve writes so beautifully and you just feel you know the characters so well. Each of the stories in this book are so unique with just the slight interlink - having the wonderful Des in this story was a delight.
A fabulous read from start to finish - loved it! Going to buy this on release day and re-read many times

I received this as an ARC. These are my honest views given voluntarily.

My first book by author Eve M. Riley, this book had me hooked from the very beginning. The character development was truly exceptional. Sadie and James, the two main characters are so perfectly imperfect. They are each packing their own baggage that leaves them cracked and in need of repair. Forced together, the two begin to slowly begin to rebuild, helping each other rediscover themselves. But when the secrets start to spill out will they be able to continue to move forward, or will all that they have gained fall apart?

The Hero is a testimony to relationships of all kinds. Romantic, friendship, family. It is about taking time to know and understand someone, showing up and being present. It was so easy to connect with the different characters as they are so genuine and believable. While it was so easy to fall in love with James and Sadie, Des became a fast favorite. His character brought some comedic relief, and he is the kind of friend we all wish for.

While this is a romance, it deals with some sensitive subject matter and packs an emotional punch giving it an even deeper layer for the reader. It took me on a wide array of emotional reactions which made me connect even more deeply with the story and in the end left my heart happy and wanting more.

I am so thrilled to have had the opportunity to read this book and have an introduction to the Techboys series. I can’t wait to go back and read the others!

The Hero is heavy, and emotional in a way that just quietly sinks in and stays with you.

James and Sadie are both carrying so much, and you feel that from the very beginning. Their pain isn’t overdramatized. It’s raw, messy, and real. Watching them come together in that small apartment, building something gentle out of all that hurt, felt incredibly intimate. It’s the little moments that stand out most like late nights, quiet conversations, and the slow realization that maybe they’re safe with each other.

Sadie stole my heart. She’s been through so much but still has this quiet strength and kindness that never fades. And James… watching him try to piece himself back together after everything he’s been through was heartbreaking but also really hopeful.

The relationship is definitely a slow burn, but it feels earned. Nothing is rushed, and that makes every step forward mean so much more. Of course, their pasts don’t just disappear, and when things start to unravel, it adds this layer of tension.

This book does come with heavy themes, and it doesn’t shy away from them, but at its core, it’s about healing, trust, and finding light in really dark places.

Thank you Eve M. Riley for the #gifted earc.

Thank you for this gifted ARC @evemriley. This was my first book by Eve M. Riley and wow what an emotional ride to jump into. If you love forced proximity, workplace romance, and slightly nerdy characters this one is definitely for you. But I highly recommend checking trigger warnings first because this story does explore some heavier themes. James absolutely broke my heart. He goes through so much, and you can’t help but feel for him every step of the way. And Sadie? Her quiet strength and resilience really stood out to me. She’s been dealt such a difficult hand in life, and watching her navigate everything while still opening her heart was beautiful. Their relationship builds in such a natural, emotional way, full of small moments, support, and healing. It’s very much a right person, right time kind of story, and I loved seeing them find comfort in each other when they needed it most. Also I’m still thinking about that unpredictable cat! 😹 Overall I felt that this was a heartfelt, emotional read with depth, healing, and second chances. This is the 7th book in the Techboys series but it can be read as a standalone.

This is the 7th book in the Technoboys series, but it is written as a standalone. I have not read the previous six books and did not have trouble reading this one.

Both Sadie and James are forced into sharing an apartment. They soon realized they were meant to help each other as they heal emotionally and physically.

I enjoyed the banter between James and Sadie and, of course, the banter with the best friend, Des. I liked how they connected and bonded, both growing as adults and also while taking care of Mr. Karen. The romance slowly develops, and it feels very natural. Each character is very aware of their healing process and they both try hard not to be a burden to anyone else (very relatable) and how both Sadie and James found a safe space to be exactly who they are.

This story is emotionally heavy and discusses sensitive topics. Please check the trigger warnings before reading (I had to read in small batches just to check in with myself).

CW: abuse, suicide attempt, depression

This was my first book by Eve M. Riley, and I thank her for reaching out and gifting me with the advance copy of this great book.

This book is out now!

heart-warming romance, chivalry in the modern world, fast paced plot

I think this is Eve's best book so far and I have enjoyed all of the tech boy series with their brand of love stories enhanced by warm and supportive friendships and exciting plots. James and Sadie not only fall in love but also grow as people, I enjoyed Sadie being as strong a character as James, each helping the other, how characters saw and nurtured each other's strengths, and friends were loyal, kind and understanding. I love the way Eve is not just telling us Sadie and James's story but also touches on what is happening to other characters from previous books, drawing us into Eve's tech boy world. It feels like the network of friends Eve has created could take on many difficulties and win through. Finally, I enjoyed the way Eve explores Sadie's inner world of fantasy fiction and old fashioned romance and how this inner world spurs her to be brave in the real world. SPOILER ALERT It may come as no surprise to learn who the real Hero of the book is. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of the book.

Hold on to your hat, my fearless reader friend, because this one will put you all up in your feels and leave you with the most blissful of happy sighs.

Sadie Turner is a quiet bookworm type from the projects who finagled her way into a coding job. James Royce is her boss who's just broken up with his girlfriend of twelve years, and he's in a bad head space.

James is staying at his best friend's place while Des is out of the country opening another Williams Security office. Sadie needs a place to stay and Des convinces her to be roommates with James to keep an eye on him. That works, since Sadie also needs a safe place to stay.

The Hero gives us lots of drama and danger with vulnerable characters and satisfying growth arc for both James and Sadie. Add in the abundance of heart and masterclass writing, and I gobbled this up in one sitting. Rıley's writing is why I read romance, hıtting all the right notes, taking me on an exhilarating, heartfelt, satisfying ride. Your romantic heart will thank you for reading this one, so run to the 1-Click now.

The Hero is book 7 in the Techboys series. It’s an emotional story about two lost souls finding each other in the difficult times.
James is having a very hard time in dealing with a break up. He’s struggling and doesn’t feel like he can go on. Ultimately, during his darkest hour he isn’t able to follow through with his plans.
Sadie is a quiet introvert who is struggling financially. Her life takes a harsh turn when she is confronted with a situation that results in her looking for a place to live.
They are both at very dark and turbulent times in their lives when they move in together as roommates. They both work together but become friends quickly and the attraction between them grows stronger and stronger.
Their story is about acceptance, respect and love. Their tender relationship is filled with love, care and affection.
The Hero is beautifully written, with a gritty and emotional story that is only made better with Mr. Karen and Des in the mix! This is a great read for those who enjoy interesting characters and feeling all the feels.

This was such a good installment for the Techboys series! I originally got to know the series with Book 6 and have really enjoyed the writing. This book is a little heavier so, I would absolutely encourage checking out the trigger warnings ahead of time!

James and Sadie’s story is definitely different than I thought it would be! James is getting over a terrible breakup from a manipulative ex. Sadie has had a difficult life and is trying to hide her past. Their worlds collide when they end up sharing an apartment. Through the story they slowly begin develop a true friendship and their love story truly blooms. They help each other heal and find their best parts. Unfortunately, the universe couldn’t completely leave the be! With James’ manipulative ex wanting him back, and Sadie’s stepfather hunting her down, their fragile world just may not survive…

Eve does such a great job of making the characters believable and the story compelling. I always know it’s going to be great whenever I get to read the Techboys!

ARC Review: The Hero by Eve M. Riley

Thank you to the author for trusting me, counting on me, and having me to be on her ARC team and sending an e-copy of her book. 🎉

The Hero is a masterpiece in itself, in emotional storytelling. Author, Eve M. Riley, crafts characters so real and raw, you can't help but become deeply invested in their journey. The narrative explores themes of vulnerability, trust, and resilience with a delicate hand, making every triumph feel earned and every struggle deeply felt. You won't be able to put the book down, for sure. James and Sadie's story is breathtaking, real, and ultimately triumphant, leaving a lasting impression long after the final page. It will have you feeling bad and sad for the characters at some point, but then if not for the plot, then what is a good book for?

This book is a must-read for anyone who believes in the power of quiet heroes and the transformative nature of love all in all. Prepare to be swept away in the best way possible.

Eve M. Riley's The Hero, is the latest (Releasing April 2026) standalone in The Techboys Series, it's an emotionally charged and deeply satisfying contemporary romance that delves into the complexities of healing, resilience, and finding unexpected strength. As an Advance Review Copy, I promise for it to be a standout read for fans of character-driven stories and slow-burn romance (and dark romance readers too - it was personally a lil too much for my taste tho, lmao)

This is BOOK7 in the series.

For a more detailed & honest review of this book, I have posted it on my instagram. You may check that out if you need more details. Don't worry, it's spoiler-free.

⭐️eARC Review-I received an ebook copy of this from the author in exchange for my honest review⭐️

James and Sadie are both dealing with some REALLY heavy stuff, and this story leans hard into that emotional weight. It’s definitely a slow burn, but it works because you really see the trust build between them in those quieter, in-between moments.

I liked that their connection didn’t feel rushed or forced—it’s messy, a little fragile, and very rooted in everything they’ve been through. It’s more about healing and feeling safe again than anything overly dramatic.

I’ve read other books in this series and already knew this author does emotional depth well, and this one definitely follows through on that.

🚨Just a heads up to check trigger warnings—this one goes into some heavy topics.

Thank you to Eve for letting me be an eARC reader again—it was an honor. You always know how to pull your readers in and let us see how incredible your stores and characters are 🖤

James and Sadie have both been through a lot, and you can really feel the emotional weight they carry. They end up living together forced proximity 👀, and the slow build between them was so good. The chemistry is definitely there, but what I loved most were the small, intimate moments like cooking together and watching them slowly heal and grow side by side.

James dealing with his breakup was written in such a soft, emotional way yeah. Sadie’s fear of her stepdad also adds a lot of tension throughout the story, which kept things interesting.I will say, parts of the plot felt a little predictable, and I wish there was a bit more depth in some areas especially the ending. But overall, the writing was really beautiful. If you like romance where two people are healing together, you’ll probably enjoy this one.

If you haven't checked out Eve's book I totally recommend you to do so you wont regret her books are so entertaining.

What an incredible heartaching ride! This story isn't just a romance. It's a journey of healing, compassion, trauma bonding, and finding love in some of the darkest times. James and Sadie are such beautiful characters, and I loved reading their simmering chemistry turn into so much more, growing, and developing into something so special. Sadie's amazing triumphant battle with her learning disability and dyslexia was so moving and inspiring. I couldn't imagine how that struggle feels in real life, but Eve made me feel it through these pages. The emotion Eve M. Riley writes in all of her stories is so heartbreakingly good. James is no different, hitting the lowest of lows and then having to grapple with so many emotions. This couple rediscovering love, friendship, and a safe place for their hearts to land was one of the most powerful stories I've read. The Hero is filled with tenderness, intimacy on a profoundly deep level, and the most heartwarming bonds. I loved every moment.

James and Sadie never expected each other. They are both going through things and when they become roommates things between them began to change over time.

James and Sadie deserve so much and I love that they were able to find a second chance in each other. They came into each other’s lives when they both needed it the most and despite the two have them having their own struggles, they were there for each other. I love how their relationship progressed and the little moments they shared with each other.

James and Sadie’s journey was an emotional one, but it is absolutely worth it in the end. I love the connection they share. I love the little moments. The support they give each other. I also adored Mr. Karen.

This is the 7th book the Techboys series and it can easily be read as a standalone.

If you’re looking for a second chance, emotional romance check this one out.
