Going into this, I knew it would be a story about grief and finding love again, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this soft. Following Tessa as she navigates life years after losing her husband while unexpectedly meeting Logan made for such a heartfelt, emotional journey. There aren’t huge twists or nonstop dramatic moments... it’s simply about healing, opening your heart again, and learning that moving forward doesn’t mean leaving the past behind.
This book felt so incredibly tender and quietly emotional. Instead of throwing constant drama at you, it simply let you sit with these characters as they healed, loved, and slowly found their way back to happiness. 🥹 I really appreciated that. It was such an easy book to sink into
One of my favorite things was how mature Tessa and Logan were. Their communication?? YES. They actually talked through their feelings instead of creating unnecessary misunderstandings, and it made their relationship feel so genuine. 🙂↕️ Watching them slowly grow closer felt so natural, and seeing Tessa allow herself to love again after carrying so much grief for so many years was beautiful🥹🥹
And Logan… 😭 What an absolute green flag. I adored watching his relationship with Jake develop. He didn’t come in knowing exactly how to be around kids, but seeing him naturally step into that role with so much patience, care, and love completely melted my heart. Every scene with the three of them together just made me smile.🥹🫶🏼
The only thing that occasionally threw me off was the timeline. I kept feeling like everything was happening really fast, only to realize more time had actually passed than I thought. It wasn’t enough to take away from the story at all, but I did find myself wishing the passage of time had been a little clearer 😬
Overall, this was such a sweet, heartbreaking, and beautifully healing story. Sometimes the quiet books end up leaving the biggest mark. I finished it with the happiest heart, and that’s exactly the kind of feeling I love closing a book with🥹🤍

July 23, 2026Unfortunately, this ended up being a DNF for me.
Right from the first chapter, I knew the writing style just wasn't going to work for me. Instead of letting me get to know the characters naturally, the story immediately launches into a lengthy recap of everything that's happened in the FMC's life to bring her to this point. I always prefer when an author lets those details unfold organically rather than front-loading all the backstory at once.
Another thing that didn't work for me was how heavily the story focused on her late husband right from the beginning. It honestly felt like every other paragraph reminded us that he had died—to the point where it became repetitive. More importantly, I tend to struggle with romances where a widowed main character is still deeply consumed by their deceased spouse for a significant portion of the book. That's entirely a personal preference, but it's something I know doesn't work for me, and from the opening chapters it was clear this story was heading in that direction.
Because of those two things, I decided it was best to stop reading rather than push through something I wasn't connecting with.
A sincere thank you to the author for the ARC. While this one wasn't the right fit for me, I know many readers who enjoy emotional, grief-centered romances may have a very different experience.

I really liked Kay Thorne's "After the End," a single mom, love after loss, small-town firefighter romance with a lot of emotion behind it. Tessa (FMC) lost her high school sweetheart police man husband, Ryan, when he died on the job. Shortly after his death, she found out she was pregnant. Six years later, she is a proud mother to her son, Jake, but hasn't moved on romantically past Ryan. She's not sure her heart can take another break or loss. Logan (MMC) is new in town. He is a firefighter who decides to go to a bar one night, where he sees Tessa, who is there with her friends on a rare night out, and is instantly obsessed with her. The two of them have a one-night stand, but their connection is undeniable and so much more than that of a fling. I found this book to be fun, emotional, and spicy in equal measure. I really like the tender care Kay Thorne gives to Tessa's circumstances. Logan is obviously smitten with Tessa and wants more with her, but understands her delicate situation and her grief and never, ever pushes her for more than she's willing to give. He's empathetic to her situation without being dramatic about it. He is such a green-flag book boyfriend! Their connection is strong at the start, and I enjoyed watching their journey play out. Tessa and Jake feel like genuine people, their mother/son connection realistic and raw and vulnerable. Tessa's reactions to things that happen feel like what would happen if someone lost a loved one in the line of duty. Her grief is always there, lurking in the background, as she learns to live with it and honor her feelings for Ryan while moving on to someone new. I loved how dedicated Tessa was as a mother. I also loved how easily Logan took to Jake. This was possibly the best part of the book (apart from something that happens at the veeery end of the book, but I don't want to spoil that!!). I love how there for Jake Logan was from the get-go. It was so adorable. As for the spice, it was well-written and blush-inducing. I found this to be well-paced! I hope we get more books in this series!

Following Tessa as she slowly opens her heart six years after tragic loss made for such a tender, emotional journey. The way her lingering grief and fierce devotion as a mother to Jake were portrayed gave the story genuine depth, beautifully balanced by a small town setting. Meeting Logan, a thoughtful and patient firefighter, introduced a wonderful dynamic built on mutual respect rather than manufactured drama.
Logan is an absolute green flag who instantly wins you over with how naturally and lovingly he steps into their lives. Their chemistry balances high heat and plenty of spice with a profound emotional connection, and I loved how he never pressured Tessa while honoring her past. Watching him bond with Jake completely melted my heart, creating those sweet domestic moments that make you smile long after turning the page.
Closing the book left me with the happiest heart and that warm, satisfied feeling from a truly great romance. It manages to be low angst and high comfort while still honoring the reality of finding love again. The charming atmosphere and wonderful side characters made this a delightful escape.

I’m such a sucker for a romance that explores love after loss, and After the End definitely delivered on that emotional journey. This was my first book by Kay Thorne, and it definitely made me want to pick up more of her work.
The MMC was an absolute walking green flag. He was thoughtful, patient, and constantly put the FMC’s feelings first. What I loved even more was how much he cared about her son. He never made either of them feel like an afterthought, and seeing him step into their lives with so much love and respect completely won me over.
Watching the FMC slowly open her heart after loss, even though she did not think she would find love again, was the highlight of the book for me. Her journey back to love felt heartfelt, and I found myself rooting for her happiness every step of the way.

Sweet little small town romance with a single mom FMC and a firefighter MMC.
I really enjoyed this novella (not sure it’s being called that but it was very short). It felt a little insta love but their chemistry was really sweet. Both MCs were extremely likeable but the MMC stayed a little bit of a mystery. The development of their relationship was very endearing and I enjoyed how incredibly sweet and thoughtful he was knowing all of her trauma. And the spice! Very well done.
My only real dislike was that dialogue was interrupted by quite long internal thoughts to where you wondered if the conversation was left unfinished or if you missed a sentence. That happened a few times and each time left me feeling a bit disjointed.
Overall, the story was very cute and I loved that there wasn’t a third act breakup or miscommunication. I enjoyed the set up for future books with the side characters as well.

I'm a sucker for firemen romances, so this one caught my eye. I did not expect to get blown away by such a touching story! This story follows Tessa, who has had a rough 6 years. Her husband, Ryan, suddenly passes away in the line of duty, leaving her all alone to go through a pregnancy she only found out about after his death. Tessa is the toughest and most determined mother there is. No matter how difficult it was, she worked hard to raise her son, Jake. She focused all her energy and time to make sure he has everything he needs. She barely has time for herself. The one few time she gives herself a night out with her friends, she meets Logan, a local fireman who just moved into town. Logan is one of the best book boyfriends I have ever read about. He is so patient and caring and tries to give Tessa space to develop her feelings for him/figure out what she wants. He never pushes her, but shows her he is serious about her just by making the effort and showing up time and time again. The relationship he develops with Jake is one of the sweetest moments of the book. He never pities Tessa for what she has gone through, but instead he vows to not make her go through the same heartbreak ever again. He loves and protects her and Jake fiercely. And knowing how her husband had passed away, he understands her fear when he is on duty and responding to a call. He lets her know he's safe the earliest chance he gets. I'm so happy Tessa has found her happy ending despite all the sadness and grief she has been through. My favorite part of the book that also caused the most tears was when Logan went to the bridge to have a heart to heart with Ryan. He really loves Tessa and Jake. He understands the love for Ryan and the love for him can coexist. He does not want to replace Ryan, he just wants to be there to love Tessa and Jake extra. What a man!

Tessa struggled with profound grief and depression when her life changed forever after the death of her husband, Ryan.
Logan is firefighter who moved from the city to live near his younger brother, Luke, in the small mountain town where Tessa lives.
Fortuitously, Tessa and Logan meet and they find in each other what they each have been looking for.
This novel so realistically describes coping with grief, and the fact that it’s a continual process; not just completed in a set amount of time.
I loved reading about Tessa and Logan, and how they supported each other as they came together as a couple. This book has a lot of spice, so be prepared.
This is my first book by Kay Thorne, and I hope that Kay writes about Grayson and Liv’s story in a future book!

I loved reading about Tessa and Logan, and how they supported each other as they came together as a couple. This book has a lot of spice, so be prepared.
This is my first book by Kay Thorne, and I hope that Kay writes about Grayson and Liv’s story in a future book!

Logan was the ultimate walking green flag. From their hilarious first meeting (flirting, a drink thrown at him, and dancing? Iconic.) to the way he cared for both Tess and her son, I was completely obsessed. The communication, the patience, the consent... this man was the definition of "if he wanted to, he would."
I also loved how Tess's grief and fears were handled. Her second chance at love felt honest, earned, and so beautiful to watch. And Logan…the bridge ? Yeah... I cried. Ugly tears 😔😭

Let me set the vibe....

I enjoyed the characters. I liked their flirting. A few of thw side characters intrigued me.
All that to say...this was insta-love. Everything in this book happened at warp speed. They bonded, connected, and fell for eachother in a chapter or two. I like my books to be a bit more full of details and side stories and mess.
If you like your romance books quick and sweet with lots of spice, I do recommend this. I think it was a good story. I just don't think it's one that will stay in my mind.

Entertaining, Hot, Life after Loss Story
3.5 Stars for me. I enjoyed reading this book, it was entertaining and the backstory of Tessa's loss gave her depth as a character. Beyond that, I felt like the story was more focused on how hot Tessa and Logan were together (which didn't bother me, but the story felt more focused on that than on her moving on). Im thankful that there was no third-act breakup. All of that ends up being unnecessary drama.

Kay Thorne handled love after loss with such tenderness that I couldn't help but fall completely in love with Tessa, Logan, and little Jake.
Tessa's grief felt incredibly authentic. Six years after losing her husband in the line of duty, she's learned how to survive, but she hasn't truly allowed herself to live again. Watching her slowly realize that moving forward didn't mean leaving Ryan behind was both heartbreaking and hopeful. Her love for Jake, her fierce determination, and her vulnerability made her impossible not to root for.
Then there's Logan.
From the moment he meets Tessa, he's completely gone for her, yet he never rushes her healing or expects her to move faster than she's ready. He simply shows up. Again and again. His patience, kindness, and unwavering support made him one of my favorite green flag heroes. I knew within the first few pages this was going to be a hurt/comfort read, and wow, my heart was not prepared. Tess and Ryan’s story broke me, but I really appreciated how this book handled grief and moving forward. It never felt like Ryan was forgotten or replaced, he was a huge part of Tess’s life and always would be, but the story also showed that loving someone new doesn’t erase the love you had before.
Logan was such a breath of fresh air. From the moment he met Tess, he was a walking green flag. The way their first meeting started with flirting, a drink thrown at him, and a dance was so fun and lighthearted. Then watching him slowly become more invested? Absolutely adorable.
He was the definition of “if he wanted to, he would.” The consent king, the communication, the patience, the way he cared not only about Tess but also her son… everything about him was just so thoughtful. He wasn’t trying to replace anyone, he was simply showing up and loving them both.

I'm really not bc if anything, I got to watch this story grow from something already special into the beautiful book it is now. I purposely waited until release to write this review because I wanted to experience the final version exactly the way she intended to be read.
And wow... this book absolutely wrecked me. TWICE.
This was my first book that I read from her and I didn't know what to expect. I already know I'm a sucker for small town romances, single parent, and love after loss, so this book basically had my name written all over it.
Watching Tessa navigate life after losing her husband while slowly opening her heart to Logan was so beautifully done. It never felt rushed and was not overly dramatic. It was just healing, truly have no other word for it. It was a quiet and heartfeltfully (pretty sure this isn't a word but you get what im trying to say) healing. The kind that reminds you moving forward doesn't mean leaving the people you love behind.
And Logan Bennett, this man is the definition of a green flag. You look up green flag and he shows up in his backwards baseball hat. His patience, the way he gave Tessa space, the way he communicates, and the way he loved Jake without ever trying to replace Ryan... I was GONE for this man. Every scene with the three of them had me smiling through tears.
Speaking of tears... I cried through this book the first time I beta read it. I was literally messaging Kay while sobbing. Then somehow I cried AGAIN reading the finished version. 😭 That's when you know a story sticks with you.

After the End is a beautiful story about love after loss, stripping away labels, and finding your way through life, no matter what it may throw at you. It shows that there can still be hope and happiness after what feels like the end.
The two main characters, Tessa and Logan, are navigating their lives, trying to find meaning and a place to call home. While Tessa is trying to rediscover herself and strip her titles of 'just being a mother and a widow,' Logan is trying to find a purpose and place he belongs in what seems to be a life of going through the motions.
I love how, despite losing her husband, Tessa is slowly trying to move on for her and her sons sake. Despite all the grief she's endured, she overcomes and finds herself again, opening her heart to the possibility of love. Her journey is heartwarming, though bittersweet, showing that healing isn't about forgetting her past but learning how to move forward and carry it with her. Rediscovering that there can be love after losing the one she'd thought she would spend forever with, not just herself but for her son's happiness too.

This book absolutely wrecked me and then carefully stitched my heart back together again.
Tessa’s grief felt so real and so raw. Six years after losing her husband, she wasn’t magically healed or suddenly ready to move on, and I loved how honestly that journey was portrayed. Her love for her husband didn’t disappear just because Logan entered her life, and this story handled that balance so beautifully.
And Logan… where do I find a Logan? Because this man set the standard impossibly high.
He never pushed Tessa for more than she was ready to give. He never tried to compete with her past or erase the love she had lost. He simply showed up, over and over again, with patience, kindness, and understanding that made my heart ache in the best possible way.
What I loved most was the way he loved Jake too.
There was never any pressure, never any expectations, and never any resentment about sharing Tessa’s heart with her son. Logan accepted every piece of her life exactly as it came and loved them both without conditions attached. Watching their relationship grow felt so natural and so genuine that I found myself smiling through tears more times than I can count.
Tessa and Logan together felt like sunshine slowly breaking through storm clouds. Their relationship wasn’t about replacing what was lost, it was about discovering that hearts can grow and make room for new love even after unimaginable grief.
This story was emotional, healing, hopeful, and incredibly beautiful. It reminded me that moving forward doesn’t mean leaving someone behind and that there really can be life and love after the end.
I loved Tessa and Logan together so much and I honestly wasn’t ready to say goodbye to them by the final page.

This was my first book by Kay and I enjoyed it! It was on the shorter side (just under 300 pages) but that didn't stop the story from being great and progressing well. It was fun to see everything going on in the small town of Hartridge and meeting all the side characters during the story. I have a few theories about future couples…but I'll keep those to myself. 🤭 Tessa was such a great mom and a good woman. It was hard to see her go through the loss of her husband, but I love that it didn't stop her from living her life. She was always focused on being a good mom to her son, Jake, and she still had love for her late husband, but she didn't let her loss control her life. I appreciated that she was so open to finding someone new, and when she found Logan, she didn't push him away or fight her feelings just because she was a widow. She told Logan her story, and let him decide if he still wanted to pursue her. Logan was not deterred by Tessa's past or the fact that she was a single mom; in fact, he embraced both of those things as soon as he knew that he wanted more with Tessa. I love that he also let Tessa lead things in their relationship, but he was still ready and willing to be in her life, and Jake's life, no matter what. Another thing I appreciated about Tessa was how accepting she was of Logan's job as a first responder. Her late husband was also a first responder, so she definitely had her moments where she compared their jobs, but she never let it scare her away from a relationship. I honestly expected her to want to run or need more convincing (which would be understandable and I've seen that in other books with a similar premise), but she wasn't scared off and was even accepting of Logan's job, and I loved seeing that. This was a great story, and I can't wait to see what might happen next in Hartridge!

This was such an amazing emotional read. From the very beginning, the waterworks start.
Tessa is a single mom and after losing her husband, she didn't think she'd ever find it again. She meets Logan, a new firefighter in town one night, and immediately sparks fly. They share one incredible night together. When Logan finally sees Tessa again, he finds out she has a 5 year old son, Jake. Logan is undeterred and determined to make this thing with Tessa work. Can Tessa find it in her heart to move on?
The plot is so emotional, yet heart warming. The aspect of moving on after losing someone you loved in here was great. Grief and healing is different for everyone, so if you think she moved on too fast after meeting Logan, no she didn't. She has been alone for 6 years raising her son, believing she was going to be alone. Immediately, I cried for Tessa. I loved reading abiut her turmoil and her acceptance of closing the door on her marriage. Her fear of losing her loved ones runs deep, and it projects ont Logan.
Logan, the man that you are! Let me tell you, this man planned a family date, washes her hair, and accepts that her husband will always be a part of her. I loved Logan from the start, but there's no word to describe how I feel about him at the end. This man can do absolutely no wrong!
Tessa is such a strong character. The author dabbled on her depression and grief after losing her husband, but my girl came out stronger at the end. Even though she was scared of Logan's career, she didn't let that fear stop her from loving him. She was an amazing mom throughout and made sure Jake was a priority throughout it all.
1000% recommend you read this if you like small town, firefighter, single mom, he falls first and hard book!

This book is a really relatable and sweet and spicy contemporary romance. It shows how magic can find you when you least expect it.
The FMC is Tessa, a widowed single mom who lost her husband in the line of duty. She meets Logan after accidentally spilling drinks on him at a bar where she’d been line-dancing. Unbeknownst to her, he had been watching and trying to catch her eye. They have an immediate connection and while Tess is very wary of beginning a relationship, especially with a first responder, Logan proves to her over and over that he is interested and all in. It doesn’t hurt that her son met him separately when he spoke to the class about being a firefighter. But can she allow herself to believe that she can open her heart to him and he won’t leave too?
The MMC is Logan, a firefighter who came to Hartridge from a nearby city to find community. He and the other firefighters have a tight knit family. He’s a good man, all the way down to his bones, and super respectful and absolutely falls head over heels for Tessa, and works so hard to show he loves her as she is, takes care of her like a partner from the start, and is a fun and supportive adult for her son. Watching their lives coalesce and their relationship build in depth and scope was so fulfilling.
This is a great spicy read with emotional depth that avoids a lot of classic issues like third act breakups and senseless misunderstandings. The relationship and character development and plot all move at a great low-stakes pace and will have you kicking your feet in delight more than once. I giggled out loud at the very first “swivel the ballcap from front to back” moment. Girl, I was a goner too!

Reading has become so much more than just a hobby for me. As a single mom to a special needs child, books are my escape. They help me de-stress, keep me grounded, and give me a much-needed break from the chaos of everyday life. Because of that, I tend to have strong opinions about the books I read, and those opinions are always my own.
Going into this story, I wasn’t sure what to expect since this was my first experience with this author. I’m so happy to say she has earned a spot on my list of authors to watch. I love when an author can completely break your heart and then slowly, chapter by chapter, put it back together again—and that’s exactly what Kay Thorne did.
This is the story of Logan and Tessa, two people who are simply searching for a place to belong and the chance to start over. Tessa is a widow raising her young son while still carrying the weight of overwhelming grief and loss. Logan, meanwhile, longs for a family and a place where he truly belongs. Watching these two wounded souls find comfort, healing, and hope in each other was both heartbreaking and incredibly beautiful.
This story is filled with emotion, healing, and second chances. It reminded me that even after unimaginable loss, it’s possible to find hope and happiness again.

I went into this book knowing that it was going to be an emotional one. But what I wasn't ready for was to be completely taken down by this book. I cried in so many places in this book. I had sooo many feelings when it came to everything that happens inside these pages.
Tessa and Logan have got to be one of my new fave couples! They have COMMUNICATION!!!! Seeing that they talk through their issues and feelings was like someone hearing an angel sing in the empty desert.
Logan was a WHOLE GREEN FLAG! He was an amazing person who was more than willing to open his life to someone and thier child. Logan built a relationship with Jack and was more than happy to fill that place. Jack and also Tessa needed him to fill that role. It made things easier on Tessa!
This story was so amazing and I cannot even begin to tell you how many kleenex's that I used while reading this.

If you love finding love after grief, this is definitely for you.
Tessa, my heart goes to you. I just want to hug you. Reading her journey as a single mom and trying to find herself after losing her husband just hits me in the gut. Especially that she was mentioned in Finding Haven as someone who is associated with Zack. Reading her story and reading how she's finding love makes me happy for her especially after how she lost her husband. I think this book shows a great amount of strength about single moms who've lost their partners. Tessa, I admire you.
Logan. I was screaming for this man. He's a green forest in my book. The patience he has. The reassurance he gives. The way he's vocal and does anything he can to make Tessa feel safe, reassured, seen, and not feel rushed makes me feel so many types of ways. The way he doesn't force Tessa to tell her story until she's ready or goes to others to try to tell him Tessa's story because he would rather hear it from her. I love this man. Just the overall connection between the two had me screaming. Especially the way he treats Tessa's son warms my heart.
I will say, because I'm an emotional person, there are parts about Tessa that will make you tear up. Reading about how she continues to push forward and her grief had me in tears. Grief never has a timeline. Sometimes we're never fully healed, but along the way, there are people who stay and love every version of you and support you. Even if new people come along the way. Tessa’s fears about Logan being a first responder are completely justified after everything she went through with her first love, but she handles the challenges and emotions that come with his job so much better than I was expecting her to. Logan was such a breath of fresh air, he is so understanding and gentle towards both Tessa and Jake that he is exactly what they need. Planning the perfect dates, not only for Tessa but also as a family, would not have been easy but he did it anyway and smashed it out of the park.
The letter Logan wrote to Ryan made my heart sing but had me tearing up and it was filled with so much love and gratitude, shows just how much of an amazing man he is, to be able to embrace and not be jealous over a former love and father of Jake.
The life that the 3 of them have formed is truly amazing and it was such a wonderful story to read.
