The Knucker King is one of my favourite reads of 2026! It has everything I could wish for in a story : fantasy, romance, sweet protagonists, a cozy but angsty ambiance, different creatures…
I will start by saying I devoured this book! It had me in its claws and didn’t let me go. I went through every emotion possible during Avice’s and Trewoofe’s journey. The author had me smiling, giggling, gripping my pillow, crying, frustrated and enamoured. Yes, I think the Well King and the little witch earned a spot in my top 5 book boyfriend and book girlfriend list! There is just so much to love about them! They are gentle and caring in a world that is cruel and rigid. They put others’ wellbeing before their own even when no one thanks them. They sprinkle hope even when their own heart still burns from past hurt.
Both are so tolerant and open minded, healers and protectors. They recognize the good the other brings to the world, the beauty of not only their physic but their soul too. Seeing their relationship evolve is like watching a dance; sometimes slow, then the beat accelerates in tandem with their hearts.
She fell for his beast form and kindness, he fell for her determination to save others and her warmth.
There is so much tension throughout this story, the little touches, the shy looks. They both save and heal each other. They comfort and wake parts of themselves they thought dormant. It’s a story of trauma and healing, of trust and allowing love in your life.
The writing to me was beautiful. I was a part of Lamorna, it was so immersive.
Oh and how I fell in love with Avice’s "good boys".🥺💕 The way they were the ones to bring our MCs together! "He fancies you. I can tell."; "She said that she ‘thinks you’re lovely’"… My heart melted. This is what found family should make you feel like, deeply loved and supported! I wish I could be part of that tribe and witness that loyal bond daily!
Alicia Dingley, thank you so much for creating a story that reminded me that love doesn’t have to be earned but is freely given and that you deserve a colorful future even when you still fight off the darkness of the past.

The Knucker King by Alicia Dingley

Aw this one was so sweet! Definitely more of a slower paced cozy romantasy but with enough separate romance + fantasy subplots to nail the genre and not take away from the overarching plot/storyline.
I did really like the strong plot running throughout this book - the tension and backstabbing mystery kept me engaged and I was curious as to what happened next! I also enjoyed the humour in this one as well - it was a lot of fun all round! I loved how the book tackled topics like Femininity; the emotions conveyed were so raw and my heart hurt a few times reading - very well done. I love the unyielding conviction of a FMC shining through in books like this. Holy cow though some of the male characters in this book PISSED ME OFF. The misogyny made me want to get in there and start BRAWLING. 😤
I did however find The Knucker King was a little bit repetitive in some parts. Not really the events that happened; but the character’s reactions to them. Once the main plot was established nothing ‘new’ really gripped me which is fine, but I found it to be a little lacking in this department.
I enjoyed the setting and the writing! I love a good folklore/fae ‘retelling’ with every author putting their own spin on things. The writing syntax/flow reflects this and at times I found the dialogue especially to be very slightly annoying. I think it just felt juvenile to me, in a sense? As such it did detract from some other elements e.g the likability of the characters but it definitely didn’t bother me enough to stop reading. I also understand this was a stylistic choice to reflect some of the characters but it just didn’t click with me, unfortunately.
I recommend this book for cozy book lovers looking for a whimsical next read that still covers some heavy-hitting subjects (in the best way!). Please read the trigger warnings though :)

I’m very picky about my romantasy novels. I want cosiness and warmth and chosen family and green flag MMCs, except mixed with some pointed social commentary. Not easy to find, but The Knucker King delivers on all fronts!
Avice is a midwife who still practices the old ways and honours the mystical creatures who live around her…in a village that has converted to Christianity and is often hostile to her way of doing things. Trewoofe is King of the Knuckers, only one type of dragon among many, whose kind used to oversee the humans until they turned hostile toward his kind, and attacked him and his family.
When babies start being born with strange afflictions, Avice and Trewoofe team up to figure out what’s behind it.
What I admire about Alicia Dingley’s writing is how well she can evoke a cosy setting, such as Avice’s cottage, with its beams in the roof and dried herbs and Ashling, a portable, sentient flame who reminds me of Calcipher from Howl’s Moving Castle. Likewise, Trewoofe’s nest is described as equally cosy and appealing, even if not intended for humans.
Though both Avice and Trewoofe carry deep wounds from their pasts, they were also both ready to move past them and move forward in their lives, which I found refreshing. I also loved the plus sized representation in this book, how Trewoofe was so attracted to Avice and her size was never something that she had to feel badly about or apologize for.
And the spice! Dingley takes her time building up to it, but that just made it more worth it in the end.
Despite all the cosiness, this book does tackle some pretty serious themes, like patriarchy, misogyny, and religious hypocrisy. I thought it was very realistic how fighting against these wore Avice down, but then Trewoofe’s love and support gave her the strength to keep going and helping the vulnerable humans and Folk under threat.
All told, this is an excellent book and I will definitely be picking up the next in the series.

The Knucker King is a whimsical fairytale with slightly darker undertones. This is definitely a book where I recommend checking the trigger warnings first to decide whether this particular fantasy story is right for you.
There is so much to love about this story that I'm not quite sure where to start.
Avice is a midwife and healer, although some may call her a witch. She's respected by many of her peers, as well as the creatures of the land. There are fairies and dragons, ancient magic and folklore, and for Avice, this is simply her world.
When babies are born with needs beyond what Avice's human remedies can provide, she turns to King Trewoofe, a Knucker Dragon, for help. This doesn't sit well with the local church leaders, and their actions place both Avice and Trewoofe in danger, setting the fairytale in motion.
The world we step into is vivid and imaginative, making this such an immersive read. It feels alive, almost as though you're right there within it, watching each new layer unfold around you.
The bond between Avice and Trewoofe is incredibly sweet, and they are certainly put through their paces throughout the story. I loved watching their connection develop alongside everything happening around them.
The spice is handled well. For me, it didn't feel particularly different from what I might encounter in other fantasy romance stories, but I would still recommend checking the trigger warnings before going in, as there are elements that may not be comfortable for every reader.
And the ending? So sweet. It left me smiling and giggling.

The Knucker King, book one of the, Song of the Sidhe Kings series, absolutely captured my imagination and heart and I want to live in this cosy space for a little bit longer. The way Alicia has woven English and Celtic folklore together to create a new and exciting world to fall in to, is masterful.
I think it doesn't matter how old you are, if you still hold that little spark of magic from childhood that you believe the fae and fairies are real, then you will devour this book. It brings the magic back and I found myself grinning and kicking my heels in so many places.
We follow a human witch, Avine one of a long line of Gardener women who acts as a midwife for the village and believer of the old ways, able to see and converse with the fae. Her trusty familiar, Bramble the Grim and her fire Wisp, Ashling her constant companions and friends, but it's the enigmatic King of the Well, Trewoofe that holds her captivated, though he shouldn't, he's a Knucker...a dragon King and not for her.
King Trewoofe, is completely enamoured by the human witch and would like nothing more than to look after her, make her comfortable and claim her as his. But nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
With religious unrest in the village, a never ending winter and babies being born... wrong - Avice and Trewoofe have much more complicated matters to attend than finding love (well, straight away).
This cosy romantasy will hit the spot that yearns for adventure, love and justice. I can't recommend this book enough.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review (thank you BookFunnel). ’The Knucker King' is a solid cozy fantasy romance that I was not expecting to enjoy as much as I ended up doing. I don't mind low-stakes stories, and in a lot of circumstances, I actually prefer it. But "cozy" stories don't tend to be my cup of tea, as I want more substance to sink my teeth into in the stories I read than the typical cozy fantasy is capable of offering. 'The Knucker King' delivered (ha) a robust story with plenty for me to enjoy beyond just the comforting elements.
I expected to like the story, but did not expect to love it. Alicia Dingley balances the folklore, mystery, romance, social commentary, character development, and found family elements so well. I normally race through books I enjoy, and I noticed I was doing just that with 'The Knucker King', that I intentionally slowed down to savour the book. I could only manage to go a bit slower than usual, though; it was just that interesting.
The characters were all distinct and lovely in their own way. I especially loved Bramble the Grim, Avice's witch familiar. The villains of the piece were all appropriately wretched and detestable. It's not often that a book about or featuring fae (Good Neighbours or The Folk) actually land the otherness I crave when reading about these types of beings. Thankfully, Alicia Dingley understands fae, and 'The Knucker King' contains a myriad of interesting portrayals and interpretations.
Even before finishing the book, I knew I wanted it on my shelf. I genuinely paused reading to order myself a copy (go to Alicia Dingley's author website if you want to support her directly).

Avice being a healer the church already side eyes for being too witchy and then deciding yep actuallyyyy I’m takin these babies to the dragon king under the hill was enough to make me not wanna put this down
this has such a weirdly cosy vibe for a book with poisoned magic, religious bs, injured dragons and babies being born with strange magical afflictions. Avice spends so much of the book caring for everyone around her and Trewoofe is the first person who really seems to look at her like she deserves that same care back.
Trewoofe was sooo damn sweet aswell like he’s this dragonesque king who has apparently been quietly yearning for her for ages and then once they actually start spending time together theres so much pining, wound tending and lil moments where they’re both clearly goneeee for each other.
I also loved all the folklore stuff with the Underneath, the Folk, Bramble and Ashling cause there was always some lil magical detail to get excited about and it made Lamorna feel like its own proper world and the whole religion vs old ways side was really interesting too, espesh with how much it affects Avice and the way people in the village treat her.

A book steeped in cozy fantasy warmth, oozing love, emotion, and devotion. And yet, a book that doesn't shy away from difficult topics, weaving them thoughtfully and beautifully into the story. A story of women's strength and resilience. A story of perseverance, intelligence, and wit. A story of a woman standing against a society that deems her less important, less valuable simply because of who she is. A story of a woman who ultimately breaks the chains of that oppression.
Yes, The Knucker King is a love story, but it's also so much more. It's a story of love between equals, of respect, and trust. A story of the dragonesque Knucker King, a Sidhe King and Avice, a witch midwife with a deep understanding of the world and all its inhabitants. Their love is born out of friendship and respect, and that's what truly stands out to me. They earn each other's trust and understanding. They work for it, and they never stop caring for those around them. Their love story is deeply rooted in the world that surrounds them, and they both thrive as caretakers.
Avice and Trewoofe both deserve their HEA after everything they've both been through. They deserve to be loved and cherished, to be each other's true sanctuary.
I loved every moment of this book, and I feel truly honored to have been one of Alicia's early readers. Her storytelling is impeccable, and the way she weaves emotions into the most devastatingly beautiful tapestry is truly remarkable. I felt like part of the story, not just a reader. So, thank you, Alicia, for gifting us this story. Thank you.
Yes, The Knucker King is a love story, but it's also so much more. It's a story of love between equals, of respect, and trust. A story of the dragonesque Knucker King, a Sidhe King and Avice, a witch midwife with a deep understanding of the world and all its inhabitants. Their love is born out of friendship and respect, and that's what truly stands out to me. They earn each other's trust and understanding. They work for it, and they never stop caring for those around them. Their love story is deeply rooted in the world that surrounds them, and they both thrive as caretakers.
Avice and Trewoofe both deserve their HEA after everything they've both been through. They deserve to be loved and cherished, to be each other's true sanctuary.
I loved every moment of this book, and I feel truly honored to have been one of Alicia's early readers. Her storytelling is impeccable, and the way she weaves emotions into the most devastatingly beautiful tapestry is truly remarkable. I felt like part of the story, not just a reader. So, thank you, Alicia, for gifting us this story. Thank you.

Alicia Dingley did an amazing job with this story.
I plan on buying this book and reading book 2 when it comes out.
This story follow Avice and Trewoofe grief, growth and family.
Though this story had the same premise of most story Ms. Dingley described and delivered it to us in a refreshing way.
I enjoyed all parts of this story.
Our MFC is Avice and she’s a witch with a heart who just wants to help people.
I enjoyed her character. She felt like a real person. She was not overly stupid or dramatic. She had a head on her shoulders. She made the best of her situation and her response / actions felt natural and realistic.
Our MMC is Trewoofe and he is a King who just wants to protect his people.
His character was sweet, protective and funny.
He was not the typical have to control to protect what’s mine kind of guy. I liked his character and his POV in the story.
All the side characters were great.
A few stuck out to me and were my favorites. I hope to see them in book 2.
Our bad guys was bad guying it. Did like him from the moment he was brought into the scene.
If you like magic, determination, fond family, devotion and all types of mythical creatures then Pick This Book up.

She has the sight and is able to see and speak to the "Good Neighbors" or faeries. She has a snarky familiar, Bramble, and an adorable fire sprite, Ashling. When she delivers a baby who won't survive in the above world she takes her to Trewoofe, the Knucker King, and asks him to find the baby a place in the underneath. He takes the baby and through the magic of the Underneath she is given a second chance at life. Avice and Trewoofe begin to experience romantic feelings, despite their differences. There are darker themes and elements woven throughout, but it still maintains the whimsical fantasy of a fairytale. There is lots of yearning and angst, which is my absolute favorite thing. The Knucker King is a standalone with a very satisfying HEA, I even shed a few tears. It is the first book in the Song of the Sidhe Kings series and will continue with another couple and I'm so glad I won't have to say goodbye to this world and characters, it was an amazing escape from reality

The Knucker King is the first book I’ve read by Alicia Dingley and I loved it. It was fun and cozy with a spicy pay off. I loved getting to know Avice and Trewoolfe and all of the other faeries and familiars of Lamorna. The story is about trust and love, both Avice and Trewoolfe am have been through a lot and have to learn and grow to trust each other so they can finally fall in love. I really love how much Trewoolfe loves Avice cause she really deserves it and I love a man who would do anything for the woman he loves. I also love how much Avice grows throughout the whole story and how the villagers treat her through the story and how she deals with them and her own insecurities that come from that. With a

The Knucker King by Alicia Dingley was a beautiful blend of cozy fantasy, romance, magic, and Welsh-inspired folklore. The FMC Avice was a wonderful heroine: kind, strong, and determined to help others even when she’s treated as an outcast. While the MMC Trewoofe, the Knucker King and dragon-shifter river guardian, completely stole my heart. Their relationship developed with so much tenderness, trust, and healing that it was impossible not to root for them. The worldbuilding was lush and atmospheric, and I especially enjoyed the magical Underneath and the folklore woven throughout the story. There’s plenty of spice, but it complements the romance rather than overshadowing the emotional connection between the characters. Overall, The Knucker King was a charming, heartfelt, and immersive read with just enough danger and intrigue to keep the story moving.

Can a book be both cosy and high stakes at the same time? Because The Knucker King is. I felt so at peace within this world but I also went through it emotionally with the devastating and maddening events throughout.
I felt so much for Avice and wanted to just take some of the weight off her shoulders. She is such a strong and independent woman, giving everything for her (very unappreciative) village.
Trewoof is a protective cutie pie and I love how he just wants to take care of Avice. He’s just what she needed, someone to love and love her back, and encourage her to meet her own needs ahead of others.
I loved how Alicia Dingley developed the world building based on English/Celtic folklore and witch magic. Definitely has me intrigued to learn more about it!

Alicia Dingley has done it again. The Knucker King is beautifully written and showcases her amazing storytelling and immersive style. Avice and Trewoofe are everything. Their romance is stunning. I especially loved how the book delves into Avice’s past and her trauma from the incident. Trewoofe’s support as he stands by her and helps her, supports her and try to not deciding anything for her is deeply moving.
The historical setting is fantastic. The author expertly addresses the witch hunts, critiques of religion, and strong feminist themes, placing us in a time when those views were not common. Plus, the world-building is remarkable. The Knucker was a fresh and unique magical creature for me, and the lore about fairies, the neighbors, the familiar, and the wisp completely captivated me.
The spicy scenes are beautifully executed and I totally love them.
The conflicts with the villagers and the clever unfolding of the mysteries kept me engaged from beginning to end. I cannot wait to dive into the second book and see what happens next! Highly recommended.

Both have weathered trials and their romance is built upon trust and healing rather than hurt.

I was lucky enough to receive this as an arc. It was such a beautiful story! The amount of knowledge and passion that has gone into it pours from the pages. At first I was intimidated a little by the length of the book at 600+ pages, but once I started reading, I didn't want it to end, and forgot about the length entirely. The discerning way Alicia has weaved some darker elements into such a whimsical, cosy and lush fairytale has you completely immersed in the depth of all the emotions, and the stakes throughout the plot feel all the more personal for each affected character. The found family element is incredibly heart-warming. Our FMC is a badass and stands on business! And our MMC is, for lack of better words, adorably smitten. I laughed, I cried, I giggled and blushed. I will be thinking about these characters for days to come.

Alicia has done it again! This book was amazing from start to finish. Avice the midwife is such a beautiful and complex character that undergoes challenges and hardships but always does best for her community. King Treewolfe is wonderful and oh so smutty. Their relationship blooms into found family as they take on her village. Bramble and Ashling are absolute stand out characters and I spent the entire book being absolutely obsessed with them all. It’s smutty, it’s romantic, it’s beautifully written and you must read this book as it hits all the right Romantasy notes.

This was beautifully written, fully immersive, and a complete novel with no cliffhanger. There'll be more in the series following side characters. Special mention to Ashton and Bramble, our FMC Avice's familiars. I absolutely adored these two characters!

I can’t say more about this book. If I could re read it for the first time I would. It had me on the edge of my seat and wanting more.
You have head of the mmc being golden retriever energy but this one reminded me of golden retriever and Belgian Malinoi mixed together you get the happy to see you and then someone touches the FMC and he is protective of her.
The FMC she is strong and tough little witch. And she wants to help others in the village and all the creatures around. But the village is ran by Christianity. And we all know how that works out.
But definitely with this one got a new book boyfriend.

THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING I DIDN'T KNOW I NEEDED!
I have never read a book and wanted to stay in it, I never wanted to leave the beautiful world that Alicia has created here. Once again Alicia smashes the world and character building in her second published novel! As a new author on the block, I highly recommend you all to do yourself a favour and read The Knucker King, because Alicia is an absolute artist! I know I've used so many exclamation marks, but it's so fitting because this story is just soooooo good and am already excited for more 😍

This book was a joy to read. It is a cosy, spicy romantasy with a fantastic story line, and 2 very, very good familiars!
Avice, a witch midwife, and Trewoofe, a Sidh King, jump into an investigation when 2 babies are born that are... not quite human. Alongside this Avice is also navigating her village turning more towards the "Cross God" and beginning to shun her although when they call for help she always comes. When Avice visits the Well King and asks him to take the babies so that they may have a chance at life he does so willingly, and from here their friendly relationship blossoms into something more.
Trewoofe is definitely a green flag male, and he takes "touch her and die" veery seriously. When the healing waters of the underneath become poisoned and Trewoofe absorbs it all to protect his community, Avice gives him blood so he can change into a human form so she can try to heal him. Which is also quite helpful for them a bit later on in the story 😉 🌶.

I fell in love with this beautifully enchanting. The characters were truly wonderful. And the world building was so whimsical and descriptive. The imagine was so vivid. It played out in my mind like I was right there in the middle of it all. This was such a true joy to read. I was so easily pulled into this, getting lost in this world, with these wonderful characters and storyline. I feel blessed to having been chosen to ARC read this one.

A wonderful world! It reminds me of Holly Black. Fae that are strange and have their own lore and aren't 'good' just magical and different. This small world town where the old ways are loosing to a new religion.
I love all the characters. They are all charming and wonderful and funny. The cover had me thinking it was a winter mood book. But getting into it, you can read this at any time! Fall would be a perfect time too read as well. Thinking about the passing of seasons, life and death, transformation.

A gorgeous world
If you're looking for a story that introduces you to an absolutely gorgeous world, then The Knucker King by Alicia Dingley is one you need to check out. The way she wove the world building with the folklore, romance, and spicy scenes made for such an easy read. If I hadn't had to sleep and go to work, I would have read this in one sitting. I am very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I LOVED this book. The world building imagery was a hit for me and I loved the characters. Avice and Trewoofe’s story was absolutely captivating and entertaining all the way through. I loved the amount of thought and time put into the characters, even characters with minor roles. Plus who doesn’t love a fire sprite? I cannot wait for book two.

I just love this book! It was so good! It's a little dark but over all very cozy! I loved the whole story. It was such a fun progression to read and see the nasty people get what they had coming to them. I loved how the mcs and the deserving side characters got the hea they deserved. I will definitely be adding this to my cozy reads when I need a pick me up
