This story throws us into a dark and dangerous world were power is both a gift and a curse.
The FMC is full of feminine rage and I loved every second of it! She is witty, stubborn and fiercely determined. Even when everything around her is trying to break her, she stands her ground.
And then theres the MMC is. Morally grey, distractingly gorgeous and carrying demons of his own.
The catch is, he has been sent to hunt her!
The enemies to lovers is so tense in this book. You can feel the hate through the pages!
This story balances epic world building with strong character development. Angels, demons, powerful magic and a world filled with danger and secrets create the perfect backdrop for the slow burn tension to build. And just when everything starts escalating...
That ending hits!
Suddenly, you're staring at the final page wondering how the author expects me to to be ok until the next book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and want to thank the author and Greys Promotion for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book.
Sooo many thoughts about this book! A solid 3.5 ⭐️.
The first thought is that it’s absolutely ADDICTIVE. Whilst I ate it up in 24 hours I was also extremely bloody frustrated! 😭😭😭😭
The second is that it absolutely did not need to be that bloody long!!! I honestly didn’t think that 40% of the book was needed.
The positives:
⭐️ The angel realm was an interesting take on Romantasy, however I didn’t feel this was explored enough. ⭐️ I liked that I hated the Korona and Korono so much - it means that the character did a good job of bringing them to life. ⭐️ I like the moral debate over what is nature and what is nurture - that the MMC is a product of his environment and not actually a monster. ⭐️ I loved the slow burn & tension. It was done well 🎀
The negatives:
⭐️ I was so tired of reading about Sylarias injured knee and knee rehabilitation. I at least thought it would lead to some killer dance scene… it didn’t 😭 ⭐️ Why was the book so freaking long??????? I felt like the middle part of the book was needlessly long and repetitive. ⭐️ death of an important side character. It just annoyed me. The fact that the MMC just delivered her back to his sister really friggin annoyed me too. ⭐️ The betrayal! 😭
am i tripping or is this book written very poorly……?
“No chasing sounds followed me. I spiraled a rushed circle.” Chasing sounds? Spiraling, a.k.a. circling?? But you’re spiraling a circle??? okayyyyy
“breaths dragged in and out of my nostrils” “a hiss slipped through my teeth.” i feel like this author may have promised herself to use absolutely no normal or fitting verbs in this book.
this book reads like a 12-year-old in honor’s english, a little egotistical about her writing and use of big words, got on wattpad thinking her story would change lives. alas, it’s entertaining, but the writing is clunky and overdramatic. enjoyed the premise but felt it lacked a lot of depth.
Good premise with angels vs Demons. This first book of this duet features the Angel side. Few things that started to grate on me… 1. Intimate scenes were repetitive. 2. Author overused some words or phrases I.e. “He crooned”, “Little fugitive”, pebbles/pebbled. 3. For some bizarre reason ‘blood’ was referred to as ‘ruby’ or ‘garnet’. 4. Could have been reading about fae, vampires or unicorns …. No Angel lore other than wings are mentioned here and there.
Okay so this started REALLY good. I was hooked and I did make it to the end (not always the case with me and romantasy). I liked the take that they were mated but it wasn't a choice and they didn't fall in love because of that. It was a refreshing take. I liked the creativity and how much the author managed to make me hate the "bad guys" as I think that takes skill.
What dropped the stars for me. The MMC progressively gets MORE annoying as the book goes on, not better. There is a LOT of repetition. E.g he croons almost all the time and the same issues for FMC get regurgitated over and over.
Weird word use such as constantly referring to blood as "ruby". Literally used it as a synonym for blood like this- There was ruby spread on the floor. The ruby on my hands dripped. It gave me the ick. And it wasn't a once or twice occurrence or I would have moved on from it.
This was actually difficult to rate because the premise was good and I was interested. At the end I sat there thinking "do I want to read the next book?" And the answer is, probably not? But maybe. I do recommend it to anyone who lives and breathes all things dark romantasy.
I rounded this up since I gave it a solid 3.5 stars. I think the ending is what really saved it for me. I was really loving the first part of this. The middle kinda dragged for me.
I do feel like the knee injury was drawn out a bit. I felt like some of that could have been summarized into a paragraph. I was so frustrated with Vaeron’s sister (Korona) she acts like a petulant child the whole time, not a queen. It does say something that the author can make you feel that annoyed with a book character! The way I cheered when she got clocked. I wanted Sylaris to keep going. I will read book two and see if I will want to continue this.
Honestly one of my absolute favorite reads of the year so far. I looooved the Deathcaller Duet, and I have to say I might have liked this book even more. Truly a 5⭐️ read. Lacey absolutely stuck the landing on this one. The political intrigue and inner workings of the angel realm were so, so interesting and I am sad to have to wait a year for the next installment!
Completely loved this book. Fated mates, enemies to lovers, betrayal, cliffhangers what's not to love? The angel & demon war is raging while the FMC & MMC try to navigate their forced bond. The FMC wants peace & the MMC wants to end the demons. The villains are perfect at making you hate them. The betrayals will have you gasping & devastated. I can't wait to read the next one!
I love a good enemies to lovers and also a forced bond. The world was interesting, it made the story 10x better to have an interesting world and background with the relationship happening. Everything you could want together!
ARC review: such a great story and characters!! I cannot wait to see where it will go next! While I painfully wait for the next book, I WILL be going back to read the Deathcaller Duet! Thank you, Lacey Lehotzky!! 🖤🖤
