The Diary of Derek Drummond: The Story of My Cursed Life

Rate this book
An immortal soul. A forgotten curse. A love that rewrites fate.

Once a proud Scottish nobleman, Derek Drummond has spent 124 years caught between day and night, hiding from the world — and from himself. A shadow among shadows, he has watched time unravel, love vanish, and hope fade into myth.

Until Megan MacKenzie looks at him — and sees more than she should.

With haunted eyes and a quiet, stubborn kindness, she stirs the man he used to be. But the past never stays silent. Some curses won’t break. And some ghosts refuse to let go.

Told entirely in Derek’s voice — darkly poetic, sardonic, and painfully human — The Diary of Derek Drummond is a gothic fantasy of redemption and reckoning.

From the storm-lashed cliffs of northern Scotland to the rain-soaked rooftops of London, it is a story of immortality, forgiveness, and the terrifying hope of being truly seen.

If you believe in second chances — even after death — open the diary.

What a great gothic, eerie story about the life of Lord Derek Drummond who was cursed, immortal, and even turned into a raven. It follows a man who spends far too long just existing before finally learning how to actually live.

What really stood out to me was how his entire fate was shaped by betrayal and jealousy. He wasn’t just randomly cursed he was wronged. The way he was treated so unfairly, out of pure jealousy, added a whole different layer to the story and made everything that followed feel heavier and more personal.

We follow him from 1897 all the way to 2020, which I honestly loved. It was really cool seeing how the world kept evolving while he stayed the same, stuck with this curse. The whole raven part was especially haunting… he’s there, aware of everything, watching life happen around him but not really able to be part of it during the daytime. That loneliness made this so powerful, it really felt like it was just him and his diary against the world.

Throughout the story, he forms connections and relationships, but it’s always temporary. People he loves grow old and die, and he just keeps going. You really feel how heavy that is losing people over and over again, knowing you can’t live a normal life. It’s not just dark though. Over time, you see him slowly start to understand what it actually means to live, not just exist.

When he finally gets a second chance at love, at being human again it actually feels rewarding. It’s not rushed.

We laughed with Derek, we were sad with Derek. The writing is beautiful, the concept is honestly really unique, and that ending… wow. Just perfect.

~Pre-read~ Always on the hunt for my next fav gothic fantasy!! Received an ARC copy.. (the list continues to grow) lol

A parannomal romance entirely from the MMC's POV. Derek ends up cursed and immortal and waits over a hundred years for his soul mate to return to undo the curse. What he didn't expect was falling in love with her. So, the life he thought he was running from, he found it was the one he was looking for this whole time.

A cozy read for my gothic romance girlies who like period pieces, second chance, lost soul found again with twist and turns that leave you hooked.

I really enjoyed The Diary of Derek Drummond. The diary format makes the story feel very personal and emotional, and Derek is a deep and sympathetic (yes, YES) character. The mix of mystery, romance, and supernatural elements creates a dark but beautiful atmosphere!

Overall, it is a touching and memorable novel about love, loneliness, and second chances. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy emotional and atmospheric stories.

I found The Diary of Derek Drummond to be a really interesting and unexpectedly enjoyable read. It’s not my usual genre, but I embraced something a little different and I’m so glad I did.
Told entirely from Derek’s perspective the narrative feels deeply personal, reflective, and immersive. His voice carries the story melancholic, sharp, and full of quiet emotion which really draws you into his long, complicated existence.
The gothic atmosphere is beautifully done with the Scottish setting and darker tone adding depth and mood throughout. There’s a strong sense of loneliness and longing woven into the story, balanced by moments of hope and connection, particularly through Megan’s presence.
While the pacing is more reflective than fast mmoving, it suits the story being told and allows Derek’s journey to unfold in a meaningful way.
Overall, a unique and atmospheric read that steps outside my usual preferences but completely worked for me. I’m really glad I gave it a chance

I’ve rated this book 4.5 stars, this isn’t my normal type of book, but I was intrigued when I saw it on NetGalley. I’m usually a romantasy type gal, whereas I feel this falls under gothic literature/gothic fantasy.

I must say this is a really wonderful book. The storyline of tragedy and curses were somewhat understandable, but the way the author portrayed every emotion so well is astronomical. I really enjoyed the diary style, and I loved going through the emotions with Derek. From despair/hatred/love/acceptance …it was all there for me. The story was easy to follow, and the writing structure was smooth.

I enjoyed midway through, the author introduced Derek’s sarcastic banter through the pages and this felt very apt for the emotions portrayed at that time. It was executed really well.

The small twists and turns throughout the story kept me really engaged, and I must say overall it was a really enjoyable read.

I received a copy of this from Netgalley

This was an interesting book. It popped up as I was browsing on Netgalley and the cover drew me in but then looking at the description of the book it is a gothic romance written entirely from the perspective of the MMC which is so rare.

The main character is a lord of a Scottish castle back in 1897. He runs afoul of a curse that causes him to lead a long and split life. The story is about him and how he deals with the curse and how that shapes him and the woman that he falls in love with. It is written in diary form and therefore we get a lot of his thoughts and feelings on the events that he comes across.

I really enjoyed this book, it was written from a character that I dont feel is done that often and in such a way that you really feel his pain and loneliness. The dark, gloomy scottish setting added another layer to this books tragic story and I really enjoyed it. Im so glad that I took a chance on this one.

Sadly I did not finish this book straight away, I had to leave it and come back to it because I really struggled to enjoy it.

The concept of the book was great and I loved the story idea and the star crossed lovers theme but sadly the chapters got boring, and most of them just seemed to be there to give the book a higher page count. This book would have worked better as being a shorter novel with less chapters that all seemed to be about his travels and not the idea of his loved one being reborn.

Concept of story was great and it is well written but chapters could have been cut down and the story more streamlined to keep people interested.

A paranormal romance told completely from the perspective of the male main character.
Derek is cursed with immortality enduring centuries in hopes of reuniting with his soulmate to lift the curse. He never anticipated developing feelings for her.
As he travels, you can see the world changing around him, but you also notice his personal struggles and the understanding that he can't run away from who he is. This book has a dark mood, a Scottish backdrop, and deep emotions, making it feel like a movie. At its heart, it's a tale about self growth and finding the true meaning to life.

If you want to see inside a deep hopeless and dark soul that just wants to be seen and loved in the same way he gives that love. For the deeply emotional hopeless romantics and for the lonely souls you crave connection. For the dark broken souls who just crave to get out of the corner they have been backed into by themselves and/or others. SOOOOO GOOD.

A really interesting read and not like anything I’ve read before! You follow the MMC as he deals with being wrongfully cursed, there is a lot of emotion and depth and you see him really grow as a character. I liked the twists and turns towards the end however I did feel it was a little long winded in certain places! But nonetheless an enjoyable read!

I just finished this book, and I’m just sitting here thinking I’ll read it again. It was just that good. I want to reread and try to catch hints of what I might have missed the first time. This book gave me all “the feels” and I’m so happy I read it. You will not be disappointed.

Derek Drummond, has everything. He's a young Scottish Lord, in love and about to marry when he's cursed by an ancient magic. Doomed to spend his life in the form of a raven by day and a man only by night, he wanders the earth in search of...he doesn't even know all the time. Eventually he learns that there may be hope...but of course the way can't possibly be smooth.

This story has everything I love in a gothic tale - stunning scenery, castles as old as the hills they stand on, love, ancient magic, mysterious folkloric rituals - and so much more. I expected to love it. I wanted to love it. But...I found it mediocre in the end, and that is genuinely painful to say because it could have been a 5* incredible read.

The writing is beautiful and evocative, and definitely at points a love letter to the Highlands - you can really picture the setting. The premise is brilliant and mixes the first person diary style telling of the tale with folklore and the supernatural. I think the book suffers from it length though, it ended up making the telling of the story very drawn out.

Derek is not always a sympathetic character - though I like that his imperfections do show through he can be very hard to root for in his vanity and pettiness. He also treats Megan horribly in the first instance - and because we never get to hear from her in her own right, we never really get to know her for ourselves and as a result she's a bit of a 2D character.

So much happens off page - the attempted murder sub plot could have been intriguing and the sub plot with Col at the end (about which I can't say much because of spoilers) deserved WAY more page time but both just ended up getting lost, and then resolved in a very convenient way.

This definitely does have an audience who it will appeal to and I may very well end up in the minority for my opinion but I did end up finding it a little dull in the end.

- Thanks to NetGalley for granting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review -

I don’t usually go for fantasy. I’m more of a “real-world problems, real-world stories” kind of man. But The Diary of Derek Drummond caught me off guard and I mean that in the best possible way.

From the first few pages, I felt like I wasn’t reading a novel. I was reading a man’s soul laid bare.
Derek isn’t your typical tragic hero. He’s bitter, sarcastic, and at times downright exhausting but that’s exactly what makes him feel real. If you lived 124 years stuck between being a man and a bird, watching everyone else move on while you stayed frozen in time… you wouldn’t be charming either.
And that’s what I liked most: this book doesn’t pretend suffering is poetic, it shows you how ugly, lonely, and drawn-out it really is.

But then there’s Megan.
She doesn’t “fix” Derek like some cliché romance trope. She just sees him. And that simple act, being seen, becomes the most powerful thing in the whole story. As a man, I’ll admit, that hit me harder than I expected.

The writing style is something else. It’s sharp, sometimes dry, sometimes almost painfully honest. There were moments where I had to stop and reread lines because they felt too real like something I’d thought but never put into words.
And the atmosphere? You can practically feel the cold Scottish air and the weight of time pressing down on everything. It’s not just a setting, it’s a mood that never lets go.
What surprised me most is that beneath all the curse, magic, and gothic elements, this is really a story about one thing: learning how to live again after you’ve forgotten how.

By the end, I wasn’t thinking about ravens or curses anymore. I was thinking about regret, second chances, and the people who pull us back from becoming ghosts in our own lives.
Honestly, I didn’t expect to like this book.
But I did.
A lot.
And if you’ve ever felt stuck, lost, or like time has passed you by, this one might hit closer to home than you think.

Thanks go to Goodreads who made this title available for free.

I was very interested in the premise for this book & couldn't wait to get started. Derek is our narrator & I really enjoyed the scene setting in beautiful Scotland. The first entry is in 1897. His life is charmed & he is popular with everyone. After a period of time away he comes back to find he has no interest in marrying his childhood friend, but becomes obsessed with her cousin, Margaret. Margaret is not remotely interested & this is where I felt a bit uneasy as Derek started stalking the poor girl. Once he gets her, there's a plot, a scorned lover & a curse. Derek, becomes a Raven by Day & a human by night. He doesn't age & we get a massive chunk of Derek travelling the world, returning at periods to Scotland whilst seeking answers from mystics until there's talk of Margaret reincarnating into a family member, Megan in the 1990's. Again Derek gets back to stalking (with added Bagpipes), gets his girl & they set to break the curse via a trip to Shetland.

So, you eventually finish the book. In my opinion it is far too long & could have been edited down. It would have been great in three parts, 1897, the in-between years & curse quest (& a Mackenzie family tree as the whose who can get confusing). I never felt I was getting anywhere at times. Something just didn't 'click' for me.

In summary, I enjoyed the first part, but the book feels too long. It is beautifully descriptive of Scotland, but Derek is rather morose as a MMC & I never truly connected with him.

This is an absolutely gorgeous story of betrayal, love, loss, and redemption, and I adored everything about it. Lord Derek Drummond has been alive for over a hundred years, it is a curse from an angered and betrayed woman. She cursed him to live forever, spending the days as a raven and the nights as a man.

The author spends a good amount of time on Derek, and the story is written mainly from his perspective in the form of his diary entries. This is a great idea as it gives the reader a way of progressing through time with Derek, his activities, the things he has seen, and how he has lived. Then there is the chance of being changed back to a mortal man. After so long living this double life, he is at a crossroads in his life.

This is a mix of historical fiction and fantasy, but it is done in an absolutely brilliant way. The author has brought Derek through the years of his life to bring him to a modern setting. There is tension as the threats from current situations which causes unrest. Also, he has fallen head over heels in love with a woman who reminds him of his past. To continue and break the curse, he has to reveal himself.

A beautifully written story of despair and then hope, of accepting fate, wanting to move on and change, and ultimately allowing himself to be his true self, with all that it entails. Historical fiction mixed with fantasy that I would definitely recommend.

I went into this novel expecting a mystical love story, but it went far beyond than that. What I discovered instead was a rich, layered narrative that weaves together history, the world of stock exchange, deep psychological insight, geography, and an intricate exploration of cultures, traditions, and the subtle complexities of human relationships. What really stayed with me is how beautifully it moves across different time periods, almost like travelling through history itself. Each chapter feels like stepping into a vivid and distinct era, with its own culture, traditions, and social dynamics brought to life in a way that feels both immersive and thought-provoking. It allows you to witness how these evolve over time—and to appreciate the beauty of each period in its own right.
I usually read during my commute on the Tube, but this was one of those rare books I simply couldn’t put down when I got home. It completely absorbed me and I just had to keep going. It’s the kind of novel that lingers with you—not just because of the story, but because of everything you absorb along the way. It’s an experience, and without exaggeration, a definite must-read for anyone who enjoys stories with depth, atmosphere, and a touch of the extraordinary. Honestly, it feels made for the screen. Even now, I find myself wondering: who could possibly do justice to Derek and Megan on screen?

Derek Drummond, a young Scottish lord, is cursed by his bride to be and doomed to spend his days a a raven and nights as the man he was. He tells his story mostly through the medium of his diary, as he travels the known world until he finds not only is he cursed to be a raven but he is also immortal. Gradually, however, he finds there is hope, and a way out for him but of course that path is not smooth.
Set in the Scotland highlands, with castles and coast, hills and ancient magic, this book has great potential, but I found Derek's tale rather drawn out. The first part held my attention well, and the premise is a very intriguing one, but by midway I was ready for the story to wrap up. This may have been partly because Derek doesn't come across as a particularly likeable character. In the beginning he is very hedonistic and thinks only of himself. There is some change as the story develops and as he comes to care for someone we can see some positive change in him but by that time his past is too entrenched for me.
The writing is good, the descriptions are good and the story premise is good and I'm sure this book will have many happy readers, but in all honesty it wasn't for me, which is a shame as I've enjoyed similar in the past.
With thanks to the publisher, the author and Netgalley for an early copy in return for an honest review.

Wow! What a journey I went on while reading this book. This beautiful story had me swept up right from page one.
The story follows the life of a Scottish nobleman, Lord Derek Drummond, who is cursed and left to endure immortality alone.
As the reader, you are drawn into 124 years of his cursed life, told through his diary entries. Through Derek’s words, you witness all the loss and change he experiences.
While reading, I felt a whole range of emotions. At times, I wanted to shout at Derek, and at others, I wanted to give him a hug. There was one particular moment in the book that made me laugh a lot, but I won’t give too much away. Either way, throughout the story, I felt as though I was right there with him.
As a Scottish lass myself, I was completely drawn into the eerie gothic romance. There is also a sense of mystery woven throughout the story.
The character development was excellent, and every character shone through, even though the story is told from Derek’s point of view. The pacing was perfect, and nothing felt rushed.
Overall, this book was brilliant, and I am very happy to have been given the chance to read it.
I received this book from NetGalley, and I am so pleased I requested it.

Firstly, thank-you to netgalley and the author/publisher for allowing me to review this arc. This review, may contain spoilers.

Ratings:
4.8 STARS

Onto the review, this is a perfect gothic yet cozy romance. We meet Derek, who we start off with following him throughout the years and seeing the world change around him; but then he finally got his chance (a second chance) at love and it was truly beautiful. This isn't just your typical supernatural/romance, but explores more psychological trauma as well. There is so much to this story, not just love and loss, but also betrayal and redemption. From the curse from an angered woman, causing him to live forever - during the day as a raven and as night as a man.

The story isn't your typical type, because its primarily in the form of diary entries but it was truly hard to put down. A truly gripping story, there was just so many layers to digest and even now, I'm like I need to re-read because there is so more lore within the lines.

Some parts were long, and felt like they dragged but overall an enjoyable read and was hooked. The ending was just chefs kiss.

True gothic style of writing📓

3-3.5🌟 stars
I appreciated the author's devotion to the writing style of 19th century gothic novels and I was occasionally reminded of the descriptions and inner dialog of a Jane Eyre. The story is totally in one POV, that of a late nineteenth century Scottish laird who gets caught up in some eerie magic on a midsummer's eve and prowls the world over a century looking for the savior to release him from a curse. The plotline definitely interesting, eerie and often suspenseful.

But I found it too drawn out, especially the first half when he spent the years moving about the world before Megan's mother appears in fulfillment of a prophecy from a local Scottish seer. I also wondered about some issues like how Derek was able to keep his laptop charged in his remote tower refuge, how his clothing worked with the physical transformations he went through daily, mechanics like that that were not explained to my satisfaction.

Thank to Cameron Publicity & Marketing Ltd and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

The Diary of Derek Drummond: The Story of My Cursed Life by Katelyn Emilia Novak is an expansive gothic fantasy that takes readers on a century-long journey through the eyes of a man trapped in a lonely, avian curse.

The story follows Derek, who, in 1897, is cursed to live as a raven by day and as a human by night. Because he does not age, the narrative follows his tireless quest over the years to break the spell. Told entirely through Derek's diary entries, the book offers a purely singular perspective that creates a specific, albeit sometimes flat, atmosphere.

While the first act is engaging and the conclusion offers a satisfying and cute romantic resolution, the middle section struggles with excessive length and overly descriptive passages. Much of the story could have been tightened to deliver the same impact in half the time. However, for readers who love immersive gothic worlds and the "immortal observer" trope, this is a unique deep dive into a cursed life. A "stretched" 4 stars for a journey that is ultimately rewarding once you finally reach the finish line.

I finished The Diary of Derek Drummond: The Story of My Cursed Life and I still can’t stop thinking about it...

It reads like someone’s private diary, and Derek’s voice just feels so worn down and real. The way he talks about losing people over centuries isn’t dramatic... it’s quiet, which somehow makes it worse.
I expected the romance to be more typical, but it isn’t. Megan doesn’t “fix” him. It’s more like she breaks the endless loop he’s stuck in, even for a little while. Their relationship felt soft and fragile, like they’re both scared to believe in it (and that is so sad).

By the end I just felt kind of heavy and emotional in a way I didn’t expect (cause I didn't expect this ending at all). It’s slow and fast at the same time, sad, and really intimate but that’s exactly why it sticks with you!! Already sent this book to my best friends, so we can FINALLY discuss it together!

I didn’t expect this book to stay with me the way it did. The Diary of Derek Drummond is much more than a gothic story about a curse, it’s a deeply introspective look at loneliness, time, and what it means to feel human again. Derek is not an easy character to like at first, but that’s what makes him believable. His voice feels honest, sometimes bitter, but always real. The diary format makes the story especially intimate, almost like you’re reading thoughts that were never meant to be shared.
What stood out to me most is how quietly the story evolves. It’s not driven by action, but by internal change, and that makes the emotional moments feel earned rather than forced. It’s a dark, atmospheric read, but there’s a sense of hope beneath it all. If you enjoy character-driven, psychological stories with a gothic tone and a touch of romance, this is definitely worth picking up.

Let it be my first Goodreads review, as I just read this book and created an account here!
As someone in my 40s who absolutely loves this kind of story, I was genuinely drawn into The Diary of Derek Drummond. It’s such an emotional and thoughtful read about loneliness, regret, and finding your way back to yourself. Derek isn’t perfect, but that’s what makes him feel so real and easy to connect with. I especially loved the diary format, it makes everything feel very personal and the slow, gentle romance adds just the right amount of hope. The whole book has this beautiful, dark atmosphere that really stays with you. If you enjoy character-driven stories with a touch of the supernatural, I’d definitely recommend it.

Wow, if I had more stars I would give them! The Diary of Derek Drummond, is an absolute gothic masterpiece.
Once a proud Scottish nobleman, Derek has spent 124 years cursed, raven by day, human by night, trapped in isolation and guilt. Told entirely from his own diary entries, the singular POV is brilliant: you’re right there on the journey with him, feeling every shadow and spark of hope.
This darkly poetic gothic love story ignites when Megan MacKenzie sees the man behind the curse. Their connection is tender, intense, and deeply moving, weaving themes of redemption and love that truly rewrites fate. I didn’t want it to end.
A haunting, romantic, and beautifully written gem. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

I opened the book, I read, I finished, and thought at least for the next few days about developing the character of Derek. He is not a hero in the usual sense. He makes mistakes, often the same ones, and life does not treat him kindly. But there is something honest about him.
The story is simple and sometimes even repetitive, yet it feels real. It reminded me that people don’t always change quickly, and sometimes they just go through life trying to cope with what happens to them. I wouldn’t call this a deep or complex book, but it stayed with me for a while. Derek feels like someone you might know, or maybe someone you once were.

What an epic saga this book is. It could easily be split into at least a trilogy. I can even imagine it serialised on TV. It may have taken me hours to read it, but it was well worth my time.

If you love a good romance mixed with witches, seers, shapeshifters, ghosts, curses and a healthy mix of drama and skullduggery, this book will be perfect for you.

I enjoy that it was written as a diary, especially as it was written over many years by Derek, who had a lot to say! He certainly went through a lot, and at times I wondered how he could have a happy ever after. Did he have one? Well, you will have to wonder for yourself until you read his story. It's an absolute page turner.
