"Peace wasn't meant to be hoarded; it was meant to be carried."
Marcus Dives was a legendary General who conquered nations, but in retirement, the silence of his home has become a deafening prison. Haunted by the ghosts of his past and standing on the brink of despair, he embarks on a final, desperate journey to find a mythical Wise Man at the peak of a treacherous mountain.
But what begins as a quest for personal peace transforms into a brutal trial of survival. Stripped of his rank, his wealth, and his pride, Marcus must navigate the frozen, war-torn Dead Lands, relying on the mercy of forgotten strangers and the strength of a fiercely independent healer named Eirys.
To survive the journey, the General must die, so that The Simple Man can be born. A timeless fable of sacrifice, redemption, and the true weight of peace, The Simple Man is a profound reminder that the heaviest burdens we carry are often the ones we place upon ourselves.

I received a copy of The Simple Man from Michael via an ARC sign-up opportunity he was offering several weeks back.
Simply put and without spoilers, this short story is quite moving. It’s a story of self-discovery, it’s a story of finding peace in the midst of the noise around us, and it’s a story that can resonate with any and everyone.
I highly encourage you to read this book…it just may change your outlook and the path you travel.
This book is a great story about Marcus, a man trying to find peace and happiness. Through his journey, he finds peace with his past and even faith that he is doing what he is meant to do. He finds himself and realizes that life isn't done with him and there are more experiences, whether they are hard fought or just interactions with strangers, for him. A good read that is relatable to our own lives and trials. Well done!
The Simple Man by Michael Castaneda is a thoughtful and emotionally resonant story about identity, purpose, and learning how to live after the thing you believed defined your entire existence is over. Beneath its quiet and reflective tone is a powerful message about peace, sacrifice, and the burden of trying to control every part of life. One of the strongest aspects of The Simple Man is the way the world and setting are intentionally left open to interpretation. No exact timeframe is given, allowing the reader to imagine the story in whatever era feels most meaningful to them. This makes the novella feel timeless, almost like a fable or philosophical parable rather than a conventional fantasy story. The limited use of names also feels deliberate. By only naming certain characters, the story subtly directs the reader’s attention toward the people who have the greatest emotional impact on Marcus and his transformation. The relationship between Marcus and Eirys adds another layer of humanity to the narrative. Through the hardships of the Dead Lands, Marcus is forced to rely on others instead of command them, and that shift is what makes his character growth feel genuine. The story repeatedly strips away the titles, wealth, and pride that once defined him until all that remains is simply a man trying to move forward. The Simple Man reminds readers that life cannot always be controlled, planned, or conquered. Sometimes peace comes not from forcing the world into order, but from slowing down, accepting uncertainty, and allowing yourself to experience life as it comes. The quote, “Peace wasn't meant to be hoarded; it was meant to be carried,” perfectly captures the heart of the novella.
Wow. I was in a bit of a reading slump through April, and received this book and jumped right in. It was a fantastic read. The themes it carried through, the messaging, the journey, can and will be felt by anyone reading this book. It will speak differently to each "traveller" that embarks on the journey to their own fulfillment.
It is rare to find a story that speaks to the heart of the reader, where they are, but this is one such case.
We are not defined by who we were. We need not be stuck on the trajectory we have started on. And we were meant to find peace.
"Peace wasn't meant to be hoarded; It was meant to be carried."
