This graphic novel was a pleasant surprise. It's the 48st one by Maurício de Sousa Produções, a collection that, contrary to what I thought, exists since 2013! (since before my childhood we have MSP "gibis" in Brazil - our name for graphic novels - but this collection follows the modern format).
In this story, we follow Pipa during her breakup with Zecão. If you've been through something like that, you know how heartbreaking it can be... In the case of our protagonist there are some other central issues to the narrative, such as her relationship with her own body.
Pipa, for those who have not read the old "gibis", is a woman whose body doesn't conform to the actual beauty standards. She is a fat woman. While she is in a romantic relationship it doesn't seem to raise great concerns, but the breakup apparently also takes a toll on her self-esteem. Her first experiences as a single woman are catasthrophic and she goes through a lot at home too...
However, this crisis is also a turning point from which we see the character in a self-discovery journey. I didn't know there would be scenes of her going to therapy, and those really touched me (I'm a psychotherapist)...
I'd also like to highlight her relationship with her mother (one of my favorite scenes by the way).
In summary, it's a story I highly recommend to all women, that explores self-esteem, family relations, beauty standards, self-knowledge... Read it, but come with a a tissue!
P.S.: Helô D'Angelo did an AMAZING job with the drawing and the colors. In the final pages she explains the simbology, and it's just genius.
